Awesome pit stop! The olive pit was recommended to us by a few friends so we gave it a shot. It was pretty busy when we came in so getting to taste the samplers of olives took a little while but were super good once we did! They have pretty much every type of olive you could imagine! And not only do they sell olives but also a ton of different types of nuts, candies, jellies/jams, and much more. We also tried the cafe, they offer 3 main sandwiches as well as the option to build your own. I really enjoyed the bistro turkey with added guacamole( $11) and the do it yourself condiments ( mayo, mustard, red onion, lettuce, pickles, olives etc.) The only complaint I'd have is that the water from the soda machine has a really bad taste to it. I suggest just paying a little extra and getting bottled water. Overall, we all really enjoyed the olive pit, and definitely recommend giving it a try when passing though the area! read more

Ordered some garlic olives from the Olive pit to be shipped to my home in Oregon. They arrived in no time and made this Quarantine a lot more pleasant . I let the box sit for a day after UPS dropped it off and then ripped it open and gobbled up one of the wonderful garlic olives. The packaging as always is amazing because they're shipping glass jars and nothing ever breaks so kudos to the olive pit for doing that for me. read more

We've loved the OP for years and then we moved to the east coast. We went to order olives to have them shipped to us and the shipping was more than the olives. My mother in law sent two jars of olives for my husbands birthday and one jar was completely rotten (which I didn't know could happen) AND there was a bug attached to where the lid screwed on! The smell of these was absolutely nauseating. We are so disappointed in these olives. read more

I've come here many times I'm very frustrated with there customer service this most recent time. We already had shown our ID to the front desk lady buying to craft ciders for a friend as a Christmas gift. And the manager comes screaming through the store in front of everyone in the store yelling over 5 times make sure to check there ID! We are full time rv'ers and stopped here and bought some bacon maple mustard. We loved it so much that the day before we were leaving I went back to buy 2 more jars. I couldn't remember the exact name of it but told them it was only a week ago that I bought it and it was at the tasting bar. I said I think it was called bacon maple glaze but could not find it. The girl I asked didn't seem to know much so I asked her if she could get someone else who could help me. She was very nice and called someone else. Another girl comes out. I tell her the same thing. She says we don't sell that. I said I had just bought a jar there a week ago. She says "I've been here 12 yrs and we've never sold anything like that. I said ok I guess I'll go get the jar I bought. She says fine. With the attitude of like you'll see you didn't buy it here. I bring back the jar and the girl who originally helped me says oh we have it right here and hands me a jar. I said oh you found some. It would have been nice if someone had went and looked when I was here. Instead I had to go home to get the jar to prove it was from here. Then the rude one comes out and says I thought you said jam. I told her not once did the word jam cross my lips. Not only did she not apologize for being so rude but acted like it was my fault. If you've been there 12 yrs you should by then know what you're selling. Before leaving I asked her name. It was Janelle. She has no business dealing with the public with her rude, unapologetic, know it all attitude. You need to keep her in back where she's not dealing with customers. Great Marketing!!!! I was driving up Hwy 5 from Sacramento and kept on seeing the Huge Green Signs. The store is Half Olive Market , Half Deli. I had the House Special Sandwich with the House Spread. Unfortunately the Olive taste overpowered the Italian Sandwich and the Avocado Spread also had a weird taste. I would recommend getting the House Spread on the side and trying a little at a time. The ladies in the Deli had great customer service. The employees on the the Market side where a little taken back when non locals would walk in, one would think they live on a Hog Farm and own several chainsaws. If you feel like experimenting this is definitely the place to do it. If you are really hungry go to one of the Chain Restaurants. read more

First time to the Olive Pit but not the last. They have every kind of stuffed Olive you can think of. They also have just as many olive oils and balsamic vinegars. The best thing is you can try everything at their sample bar. I tried a parmesan and Romano stuffed Queen Olive and a jar is coming home with me. Their is a butter flavored Olive oil that is to die for. We went to their cafe with sandwiches and burgers and signature shakes. We had the muffeletta and mocha shake. Delicious! I can't decide whether to give the Olive Pit three stars or two. There wasn't anything wrong with this place but when comparing it to another exit about an hour south, I can't help but feel like the Olive Pit can't compete. If you love Olives though, disregard this entire review. I like olives, don't get me wrong... but I have no need to buy jars and jars of 30 different flavors. If you love olives though, this is your heaven. Once a few years ago my brother bought me a 1lb gummy bear here. I came looking for one last week and they were nowhere to be seen. Too bad. A halfway hybrid between roadside attraction and run-of-the-mill retail outlet space, the Olive Pit is one of the nicer ways you can find to pass time on the I-5 corridor if you happen to find yourself in this predominantly agricultural part of northern California's Sacramento River valley. It's fun to find a store that embraces the olive as its modus operandi and fills its shelves with stuffed, pitted, and spiced olives in various shapes and sizes. The attached wine and beer shop isn't half bad, either, and you'll find some interesting local wines if you keep your eyes open: a Tehama county Albariño made at a Trappist monastery, among other options (new Clairvaux Vineyard). In winter, you can find some rare single-origin olive oils harvested fresh, peppery, and fruity and sold in 500 ml bottles: Ascolano and Sevillano, for example. These kinds of products aren't ordinary sorts of things that you'd find at your local Trader Joe's and they justify the journey to Corning and interstate exit. It's not that the jars of pitted and stuffed green olives aren't themselves interesting - they are - but I'd return for the New Clairvaux wines and the heirloom olive oils, not the big bottles filled with pitted giants marinated in garlic, hot pepper, and vinegar. Be sure to check out the olive trees growing outside in large pots by the parking lot - each are marked by their varietal and remind you that not all olives are created equally. Like any other product that takes time, love, and patience to cultivate, olives deserve their place on center stage every now and again. At the Olive Pit, they take top billing, and deservedly so! We always stop here on our way to Oregon. This last time we got a sandwich, build your own. It was HUGE, my wife and I split it and were quite satisfied. I read that some people complained about the condiment bar, but to me it was the best feature of the cafe. Everything in it was fresh and fully stocked, they'll give you little containers for stuff you want on the side. The other cool thing is the generous tasting bar, olives stuffed with a dizzying array of things. I always gravitate to the hot ones. Many olive oils, with bread pieces to dip and try. We have a couple favorite dipping oil mixes that we always stock up on. They mostly sell green olives, so don't expect Greek or other Mediterranean type, salt cured or dried varieties. OK I almost died on a Habenero & Garlic stuffed olive last night. Please be careful if you purchase these. I had eaten some while we were on vacation and besides burning the heck out of my tongue they didn't damage me. Last night I bit one in half and as soon as it entered my mouth the habenero off-gassed or something and the "fumes" burned the inside of my nose (as well as my mouth, but that part was expected) and caused my eyes to tear severely, when I swallowed it I felt it burning a trail all the way down to my tummy and I could tell when it hit my tummy because I had a severe burning sensation and a bit of numbness! OMG! I drank some cream, no good.. so I had a slice of toast slathered in butter it burned at a tolerable level for the rest of the night! Caution eat at your own risk! :-o read more

There are so many signs when you are driving up the 5 freeway for the Olive Pit. I had to go. Olive tasting bar, huge selection of olives, wide variety of nuts. How could it not be fabulous? My husband is not a fan of tourist traps. He hates them. Wants nothing to do with them. He was even less pleased when I kept mentioning to him over and over again that I needed to go there. But, we went there anyway...he knew how excited I was. Well, I was slightly disappointed. It wasn't really crowded but there was no one helping people figure out where the olive tasting bar was. I looked around but didn't see any samples! The jars of olives were huge and pricey...no way I was buying anything without trying one first. Bummer for them, I am normally a sucker for tourist traps! I did buy two different kinds of nuts which I was quite excited about. I got shelled pistachio nuts that were just fantastic! So very good. I got Paul these spicy peanuts but he appears to be boycotting them for being sold at a tourist trap! LOL, he will eat them eventually. I was passing by Corning and found myself admiring rows and rows of olive trees lining Interstate 5. So I stopped to get some gas and also ventured into Olive Pit where I grabbed a jar of Muffuletta and tried their Muffuletta sandwich and got some local wine, fresh local figs and dried apricots. They have a large variety of gourmet olives - garlic, jalapeño, mushroom, almond, blue cheese, artichoke stuffed - they all looked yummy! I loved their Muffuletta, but my sandwich was nothing special - 2 slices of soft toasted sourdough bread, ham, lots of melted cheese and Muffuletta. The bread fell apart. They do have a nice fresh condiment bar with lots of good toppings - fresh lettuce, tomatoes, olives, pepperoncini, sour kraut, red onions. All in all, worth a stop to stretch your legs and stock up on olives. Also, they do have a large variety of olive oils (including organic) and a nice selection of local wines! read more

The rumors are true, nearly all the olives here start out as the generic green, but where else can you find them seasoned and stuffed in so many different ways? If you're driving along the Five and need a break from the monotony, this is as good a place as any to stop. Along with the green olive variants, which are all available for sampling and I assume are grown nearby (there are olive trees everywhere around here), there are a variety of other olives (I bought a big tub of dried Greeks), sauces, snacks, samplers, spices and souvenirs. The staff is friendly and helpful and the olives are delish. They have a diner/counter in there as well, but I didn't sit down to try it, and it's their 40th anniversary too, so they threw in a commemorative postcard with my purchase. read more

:( So disappointing. As we drove from San Jose to Mt. Shasta, we saw all the Olive Pit billboards for a good 30 miles along highway 5. But it wasn't until our way home that we decided to stop. I needed some caffeine. It was hot and we were really hungry. The signs promised olive tastings, espresso, sandwiches, burgers, and more. Well, it's a very boring store with shelves of olives that do not look appealing. The tasting bar is a small shelf right in front of the cash registers, so you hardly notice it and it's definitely not an inviting place to linger at. I still have no idea where we were supposed to find all the food they mentioned on the billboards. When we drove off after using the bathrooms (a decent PIT stop in that respect), we saw a little hot dog cart or something in the back lot, well hidden. I guess that was it? I love green olives stuffed with garlic and marinated in chardonnay, but I can get that at my local grocery store and it's more appealing than this place. Such a letdown after the billboard hype. Keep driving unless you need a bathroom. read more

Having visited 2 facilities in the area, I can definitely say that this was my absolute least favorite. We stopped for the "tastings," but ate at their cafe first. The food was overpriced and nothing to write home about. We walked around their store but were not impressed and had no desire to experience their "tastings" in such a crowded, "gas station-like" environment. Thank goodness that we had seen a brochure for Lucero Olive Oil at the welcome center! Instead of taking a left into the Olive Pit, take a right and drive less than two minutes. You'll find a very personalized experience---clean and attractive environment, a short tour, all kinds of award-winning olive oils and balsamic vinegars, and surprise, surprise---ice cream with flavored oils mixed up in it. After about 10 hours into a 20 hour drive, my friends and I saw a billboard for the Olive Pit and noticed they have wine and beer tastings. We were ready for a break so we looked it up (on Yelp) and decided we had to stop in and see for ourselves what The Olive was all about! We loved the Olive tasting, and even braved the habanero olives! It was so good- a definite must try! We also did the wine and beer flight, which at $5 was a steal! Our bartender, Kristie, was so sweet! We had a great time chatting with her! We stuck around for lunch and we each got a burger. The patty was nothing to write home about, but the condiment bar was amazing! We also got a couple milk shakes that were out of this world! We had the black raspberry and the banana. So I've been here the number of times I've done the trek from San Fran to Washington state and it never gets old. I find they have a wide selection of olives, olive oil, condiments, candy and snacks to make it a good stop. They also serve hamburgers that are better than any fast food joint, especially the olive burger... very tasty. But I have to say my favorite thing is the sesame sticks, well worth the stop. People might think it's a tourist trap, but it's cheaper than any supposedly high end gourmet place that doesn't have the same large selection. I loved this place as a kid, and I still love it now. It's a tourist trap yes, but because I've been coming here since I was a kid, I think that it's pretty awesome, I'm sure the memories attached help a lot. You can try a variety of olives, oils, and balsamic vinegars to name a few things to try. We went to the restaurant to eat dinner, and the food was pretty good, I really liked the blood orange shake, but no one else in our group did though. The sandwich I got was one with an olive blend and salami, and cheese, best ordered warm. My son had a BLT, that he thought was perfect for a road trip. Hubby got a burger, and said it was nothing special, but good. We did enjoy the sandwiches, and burgers, some of it wasn't the best ever, but the experience as a whole is always a good one. When you first arrive at the Olive Pit, you will be super excited because you've no doubt seen 5 million signs for it along the highway and you're finally there. And you'll think "hey, the bill boards misled me... this place doesn't look that great from the outside." And then you go in and there are tons of olives and olive oil and tasting stations and even beer/wine tasting and a cafe. So then of course you'll sample a ton of olives and olive oil, which is delicious, and then order a muffaletta and put extra olive tapenade on it. And it's all fun and games until you get back into the car for your 5 hour journey back to SF and you feel like you just drank a half gallon of olive oil and you think about it and realize that you probably actually did, between the sample olives/olive oil and the muffaletta which was so thoroughly saturated that olive oil trickled out when you took a bite of bread. Then you realize that though the Olive Pit seems like a good idea, it's really not unless you have enormous amounts of self control and/or don't like olives. Enjoy responsibly. read more
