Decided to try out Oley's Kitchen & BBQ for breakfast on a Saturday morning, upon entering the restaurant it was completely empty and rather clean. There was a older lady at the counter. I believe her name was Millie. not too welcoming, but everyone has a bad day. I ordered the pork chop breakfast meal, which includes two eggs, grits, choice of white bread or wheat. The price was $14.99 and my wife opt for the bacon breakfast meal for $13.99 which seems steep due to they only give you three strips of bacon. Overall, the food was good. Food was not great at all baked beans tastes like they came straight out of a can. The collard greens had no flavor. Also mash potatoes were not good at all. With acceptation the oxtails was okay. Customer service is great here. The older gentleman server was very hospitable and kind to us. He even asked the cook to let us order breakfast even though it was 5min after end of breakfast. Breakfast is good. BBQ is delicious, ribs were smokey and "fall off the bone" meat was delicious. Mac and cheese was okay, yams were tasty and served in a mashed style. Gotta try the collards next time we come. Pancakes were okay, omelet was a meat lovers and not too much meat. Lots of good cheese though on the omelet. Home fries are home made cut, seasoned and cooked like home. I enjoyed my time here. This is a comfortable place to eat. There were a lot of people who seemed to come in after Church to eat and our server was nice to everyone. I found it nice that the owner graduated from Bethune-Cookman University, an awesome HBCU! I've been on the hunt for great soul food since we moved and Oley's is it. The vibe is what you want, old school pictures on the wall, the same paint job from the 90's , aunties arguing about the menu and a server that sits down to take your order. What I liked: the fried chicken, whiting, greens, yams and Lima beans were all great. Just ok : I wasn't crazy about the cornbread or cabbage. But that's just personal preference. Four and a half stars for a mash up of Jamaican and Southern (yup you read that right) cuisine. The online order system was really finicky and took forever to go through anddd it sent the wrong info to the restaurant- it was the weirdest thing- my email confirmation was correct but the receipt that printed on their end was not- the restaurant staff were super nice and re did the order with the right meats, which was very much appreciated. They all wore masks as well. They brought the order out curbside. I dock half a star because the packaging of the food wasn't great- it would have been much better if the curry and jerk were packed separately (those two flavors don't really go together)& they were both on top of all the rice and peas which also would have been better packed separately. The food itself was delicious, and I'd definitely order from them again, though maybe by phone. I'd skip the red velvet cake- it was very sweet, didn't have the depth you'd expect from red velvet and was a pretty small slice. Overall, I'd definitely recommend Oley's- definitely much better than it looks from the outside! Posers beware, this place is the real deal and if you're just looking for a cookie cutter joint of every other hip place you brunch at, this is not it. But what it IS is friendly service, a family restaurant vibe, clean no-frills decor, great prices and absolutely amazing homestyle Caribbean / BBQ / soul food. We had the jerk chicken and the ribs, both of which were standout awesome. Top three BBQ experience of my life, easily (and believe you me, I've been to Texas!). The sides were all equally excellent, from the collard greens to the fried dumplings (which are even better when you dip them in that amazing rib sauce, oh man oh man). The sweet tea will knock your teeth out but I mean that in the best way possible. The servers were indifferent. There were six in our party. Only one of the six of us thought their meal was "okay". We wanted a good Southern restaurant with a hint of the Caribbean and this place was perfect! Little bit of a sketchy neighborhood, but you know it is good if a lot of locals are eating there. We tried the Jerk chicken, ribs, and oxtail, everything was great. Ribs had lots of Meat falling off the bone. Chicken had great flavor- sweet and spicy! Went here for the first time with a few friends of mine and didn't think anything much of it. I heard my friends hyping up the place so I decided to try it . The food was pretty good, I ordered the large oxtail with collared greens, Mac and cheese and candied yams. The only thing I was a bit concerned about was the fact that when you order a small as compared to a large the only difference is that you get one less of a side item. Yelp Challenge 2017 - 55/100 This place is definitely hit or miss as you can tell by reading the reviews. But I had to give it a chance.... ( actually a few chances). Our first time ordering here was take out. I got the pork chop sandwich and my dinner mate ordered the rib tip sandwich. Both sandwiches came with french fries. The sauce on the ribs tasted burnt and he couldn't finish it. My pork chop was yummy and seasoned well. But I was upset to find that I only had 12 fries. We actually loved the fries and wanted more. I returned a second time to order the pork chop sandwich again. This time it was under seasoned and the fries where cold and greasy. My last visit we both got the pork chop sandwich. I guess we came on an off day? I visited Oley's with my boyfriend on a Sunday afternoon. I had a restaurant.com gift card to use and I found a few restaurants with decent reviews. I read a lot of positive things. Service was terribly slow. It was just one lady who would also go to the back to the drop the chicken. There was some other guy who brought the orders and checked on us. He was very kind with a vibrant personality. Our server was more laid back and that's cool, but she moved super slow and hardly checked on us... - 1 star. We ordered wings as an appetizer. We ordered Buffalo and jerk wings. When the wings came, she brought out the Buffalo wings and told us our BBQ wings were coming out... I told her we didn't order BBQ wings, just jerk and Buffalo. She said ohh, okay and then went to the back. She came back to the table a few minutes later with some suspicious ass looking wings. IT LOOKED JUST LIKE BBQ WINGS. The worker with the vibrant personality looked over and said is everything alright and I said i ordered jerk, not BBQ. He made a shocked facial expression and said he'd get the waitress for me. My boyfriend and I's food came out while we waited for her. He ordered the BBQ ribs and let me tell you, those sauces looked eerily similar (the BBQ and "jerk"). After about 10min she comes back and I said these are BBQ wings. I wanted jerk. She told me nooo, these are jerk wings. I said the sauce looks just like BBQ sauce and she said hmmm no, they are different, look at the spices (she points to a few effing pepper flakes). I just said ok. Whatever. I gave it a taste and you know what? It tasted like effing BBQ chicken. Excuse my cursing but I'm becoming infuriated just thinking about it. I honestly think she made a mistake and didn't want the food to go to waste, so she went and added some pepper flakes and tries to call it jerk chicken... That's what pisses me off, too. Because she thinks I'm stupid and don't know what jerk chicken looks and tastes like. I can't believe her disrespectful self. - 2 stars. Oh. And the peach cobbler was ATROCIOUS. It was the grossest peach cobbler I've ever had (I ordered it to go so I couldn't complain in person). Mac and cheese was good, but I definitely had better. Buffalo wings were a little sweet which was a surprise, but they were tasty. Fried chicken was delicious too. I guess I'll give two stats for the Buffalo wings and fried chicken. 1st of all I paid $21 for an $7 Oxtails meal with fried okras and collards and a piece of corn bread When I take this picture you're going to think I removed some food from my plate but I promise I didn't. This is not the famous Oleys that many have raved about. This is out of control. You normally get a big piece of oxtails with some small surroundings of oxtails, then they gave me a side of Mac n cheese in a small hand sized container when the fried okra should've been in the separate container.
