I've stopped by 3 times now and haven't had a single bad experience; safe to say, ole ole burrito express has solidified itself as one of my go to spots in the immediate uptown area. For the price, the portions are very very generous. Usually when a spot has generous portions there's a lot of filler but not at ole ole burrito express. All three burritos I had were filled with protein and they were big hefty burritos. Not to mention your order will come with tortilla chips as well. While I will admit the burritos themselves don't have much flavor, the salsa provided makes up for it. Also sometimes I'm just looking for something simple that I can eat more regularly so ole ole burrito express fulfills that role for me. These are what I would call "emergency tacos"--you need something to eat and it's nearby and cheap. Otherwise all the meats are lukewarm and soggy, or very dry. Sometimes meat is dry, yet soggy with whatever juice/sauce it's in. No pork. First time I've ever seen BBQ beef as an option. Maybe a burrito is the way to go. Lots of vegan options which is cool. Yelp really needs to fix their search function. I Yelped "Vegan Breakfast Burrito" using Oakland as the location. This was the 60th fucking suggestion. Yes, 60th! That gives me little trust in Yelp when I know for a fact it's not only #1, it's nearly the ONLY 1. Taqueria Venganza might make a really great breakfast burrito when they're open, but really when is that? I'm not really aware of any other "complete" breakfast burritos in the area. Probably have to cross the bridge to visit Taco Boys if you want something similar to what they offer here. The breakfast burrito has everything you could want in it. Choice of meat, beans, eggs, avocado, etc. The best part? It's freaking huge! You should probably share it, but it's so god damned good, I can't get myself to do that. The habanero salsa they give you in little thimbles is delicious. You're gonna need at least two of these and a green if you love dousing your burrito as you go. There's really nothing like it for many miles around. In fact, only thing that comes close is when I'm whippin' up a copycat in the backyard on the Blackstone. You know what they say, "if you want it done right..." The rest of the fully Vegan menu is outstanding as well. Attempted to get vegan food (vegan nachos) because there aren't many restraints that serve vegan food or have anything vegan on the menu. Asked if they could put it in a reusable container I brought, as I have done before here. Someone who claimed to be the owner of the restaurant and have an "8 hour chef certificate" claimed it was illegal. I informed him state law "ab 619" allows it, even showed it to him. He still refused. There are many options to the problem of massive plastic waste from fast food. Plate transfer is one option other restaurants have used. Just refusing to reduce plastic waste is polluting the planet directly in the global south where most US waste is discarded and directly affecting climate change. Came in for a chicken burrito bowl and asked for the contents to be poured into a bigger bowl bc the contents were spilling over; I was told that she could not bc it was against the Manager's orders. Ole Ole Burrito Express is a no-frills, inexpensive Mexican spot that has a ton of labeled vegan options (albeit laid out in a confusing way). Note that, as of November 2021, only the Telegraph location in Oakland has vegan options. They offer Beyond Meat and Taiwanese vegan meats. They use Violife for their vegan cheese. The guacamole and chips ($8) and side salsas were all excellent: fresh, light and savory. I think they may have used epazote (an alternative to cilantro) in the guacamole, giving it an extra oomph. I got 6 "vegan protein tacos" which can be made with whatever protein you want ($3.65 each). All of them looked the same, with an oily, double-layered store-bought tortilla that failed to impress; the meats were mostly too soft, chewy or odd-tasting. The jackfruit was too sweet (mostly because of the marinade) but I liked the parsley chik'n, the smoked steak and the soyrizo. Take a pass on the jackfruit and seitan. I skipped all the Beyond Meat proteins, because those are dime-a-dozen and boring. The vegan breakfast burrito ($12) was bland and starchy with an excess of refried beans, potatoes and flavorless Just Egg. The vegan mozzarella didn't taste great (they should have used cheddar instead). Ole Ole also has vegan desserts, which is cool. All told, Ole Ole is fine, but not amazing. Well, I like this spot. They came through in the clutch during COVID. Burritos are pretty tasty especially with their mild sauce. My gf has officially ruled them out of our places to dine claiming the burritos are too dry - I beg to differ. However, we agree that the nachos weren't up to snuff. This use to be my weekly lunch spot when I worked in the city 5 or so years back and I stopped by a few times a year since because back then it was 5 out of 5 great. While the menu has grown some of my favorites have been hit or miss the past few years, but my most recent order led me to finally revise my review to a 2 out of 5, and honestly it would probably be a 1 if not for the hope that they'll get their act together. In the past everything had a lot more flavor. It seems small, but one of my favorite ingredients was the pico for the chips and burritos. Good spice and very unique flavor. This visit I was shocked that the "pico" resembled and tasted like 95% diced tomatoes. It kinda reminded me of the mild house salsa at El Pollo Loco. I got a taco with birria and the "spicy" salsa and again, there was almost no hotness to the salsa and the birria was pretty average and not worth the upgraded price. My carne asada burrito had very little meat to it and probably close to 20% of the pieces had massive pieces of fat or unchewable gristle. It also totally lacked flavor. Like I said it's been slowly going down hill but sometime in the last 6 months it fell off a cliff. As others have mentioned the area is also way more sketchy.
