We ordered the 生前包 (pan fried soup dumplings), eggplant with basil, 滷豬耳 (braised pig ear), and 白菜炒年糕 napa cabbage stir fried rice cake. Overall the food was pretty solid! Not too oily and well seasoned. The pan fried soup dumplings had lots of soup inside and maintained a nice crispiness. Do keep in mind it's a fluffier bao zi texture and not dumpling skin but i actually rlly liked it. Service is fast even for a pretty busy Saturday lunch rush. Another new and different place to try out. I loved the Shanghai noodles. They are bigger than regular spaghetti noodles and the flavor wasn't overly salty and soy sauced. I could eat a whole bowl by myself :). Customers were in and out. They are popular. The waitresses were helpful with ordering. Actually, they recommended the items on the menu with pictures. I like the flavor of Xlb with the pink ginger and vinegar sauce. These came with plain ginger so it was okay for me. It's a Chinese comfort food place with solid offerings with nods to ShangHai. I cannot say they are authentic and some dishes are definitely not ShangHai related. Just standard dishes for typical Chinese restaurants. Strangely, the one I enjoyed most was the pan-fried belt fish. Of course we order the fired bao 生煎包 -- two orders. They were not bad, but not the best I hand. XLB 小龍包 was OK, the gingers and vinegar that must accompany them were not. My family and I randomly decided to go out for dinner. We weren't 100% set on the original place we chose, so when we passed by Old Town Shanghai, we decided to eat here instead. There was a short wait before we were seated. The ladies were very nice and apologetic about us having to wait - which I thought was very rare these days. Note, there is an option to sit outside (there were 2 or 3 tables out there), but it was cold so we chose to wait. As for the food - we ordered the wine chicken, beef & beef tendon soup, mapo egg tofu, spicy minced pork dry noodles, and and pan fried buns. We originally wanted a rice dish, but I completely forgot to order, which was unfortunate because the tofu would've tasted amazingggg with rice. It was good with noodles too - I'd just gotta make sure I don't include broth. I really loved their pan fried buns. So juicy! My brother said he was just "meh" about it...but he ate 2 whole ones, LOL. He usually dig out the meat in the enter if he doesn't like the bun portion. The noodle dishes were good as well, but they don't stand out much. FYI - they do charge $ for hot tea. They'll still ask if you want water or tea so just a head's up if you're going with people who are used to getting tea at Chinese restaurants as a tradition. Located in a neighborhood mini mall with parking is this unassuming spot with great food. Food was authentic in taste and variety. Shao long bao provided a tasty soup with each bite. We enjoyed the fried buns with its flavorful meat filling alongside the rice cake noodles which had the slight chewy texture and satisfying seasoning with just right salt level. Finally decided to explore further away and try this place. I don't know why this is old Shanghai when it is straight up taiwanese. The beef noodle I had is taiwanese. There is several other dishes that are all very familiar. Anyways. It was typical. Got a seat right away at 6pm on Sunday night. There was a little bit of a wait for take out. There were also large parties of Chinese people eating so I thought, wow this is going to be authentic! We had a toddler with us so things had to be fast. They had a high chair and seated us right away. What was disappointing was the xlb and pan fried buns take 25 mins to make. They make it when ordered so there was no way we would probably be able to order it. They said they had a lot of to go orders too so it would take a while. They told us the noodles would be the fastest and any of the pictures on the menu would be their specialties. I ordered the minced pork dry noodles, beef tendon noodle soup, braised pork belly with bean curd, a seaweed and cucumber appetizer. None were spectacular. The beef noodle soup wasn't very flavorful. The dry noodles was just sweet, so was the braised pork belly. The seaweed wasn't even very flavorful, I expected more garlic or vinegar on seaweed bows. Even the cold spicy cucumber dish was not smashed and didn't taste good. I miss ASJ. I didn't think a Shanghai place could be bad but this place really missed the spot. Y'all this is where Mama Chef moved. I miss the Taiwanese owner's hospitality and her incredible small dishes. We stopped by Old Town Shanghai for a late lunch, after a semi-disappointing experience at Hanabusa next door. This spot is famous for their pan-fried buns and XLB. We got their chicken XLB since ya girl does not eat red meat. The XLB is so juicy and flavorful, 100% recommend that since it was my favorite item. We also ordered a bunch of pork items- spare rib, wontons, and a smoked fish. At our table, everyone clamored about their panfried buns, which came out distinctively in a copycat cast iron pan. We looked around the other tables, and noticed some rice dishes and noodles, but we wanted more small plates and special entrees. We left very full and satisfied. All of the foods were very affordable and flavorful. We also noticed a lot of doordash orders were picked up throughout the lunch. There were large groups of multiple families to the single diner as well. Definitely recommend Old Town Shanghai for your Chinese/Taiwanese dining needs if you're looking for something authentic and no-fuss. Seating is only indoors though. The sheng jian bao was filled with delicious soup with thin skin and a crispy bottom. As good as I had expected and satisfied my craving! This place has the best Fried Pork Buns (shēng jīan bāo 生煎包) and braised fried rice with pork I've ever had!!!! I order those 2 dishes every time. The fried pork buns have extremely juicy and tender meat with the perfect flavour and amount of soup. The buns are fried to a beautiful golden brown on the bottom adding a layer of crunchy texture to the tender meat and soup wrapped inside. Each bite is bliss. The braised fried rice is very 香, it has a great flavour and makes you want to keep eating more and more. I've also tried their Spicy Minced Pork Dry Noodles and cauliflower but those were too dry and not as good. They have both a brick and mortar location (seems to be a good location (also nearby Hanabusa Cafe!) with decent environment/seating inside) and are also available on Uber Eats. read more

So I called to place the order. When I got to the store, they told me both orders were accepted and the owner BLAMED me to place double order instead of investigating their website. It was terrible attitude from their side. And they pressed me to pay for both orders and only offered to dispute the credit card charge for me, which I doubt they will help with. It arrived cold. The Honey Smoked Fish came with a decent amount of fish but was very one-noted sweet. I would've liked some salt for balance. The Honey Smoked Fish was $14.95 which is also overpriced for the quality of fish you receive. Wait Time (0/5) Our starters (lotus roots and fish) arrived quickly, in about five minutes. **The main issue was how many five take-out orders were sent out while we were waiting. Of course I understand that take-out orders are a necessary component of business. TL;DR - Get the pan fried buns! This is a little local spot tucked in a quiet plaza with parking available. The place is currently to go only, there are a couple of tables outside you could sit at. They do not take credit cards below a certain amount, I think $20 or $25. I call ahead to order the pan fried buns, they take around 20-30 minutes to make. The pan fried buns are fantastic. Crispy bottoms and chewy dough that is not too thick. Be careful biting into them, they are filled with flavorful broth and a juicy pork filling, like a xiao long bao. An order comes with 6 and makes for a delicious and filling meal. I always order the buns, one of my local favorites. I've tried a variety of other dishes here, most have been ok but not great. The pork with salted egg yolk is pretty good and so is the spicy minced pork dry noodles, though both are quite oily. I found the Shanghai style chow mein and chicken to be bland, and the spicy shrimp and pork wontons are just ok and not worth it. The pan fried buns keep me coming back though! read more

Popular place. We got there relatively early but it was overflowing by the time we left. The ambience was certainly pleasant and the place was bustling. Maybe we ordered the wrong food because it was just OK. We had an order of XLB, a chicken tonkatsu and a noodles with minced pork. The chicken was hardened and almost seemed like it was cooked much earlier. The XLB was the best of the three but didn't appear homemade. I wouldn't order any of these dishes again. Service was very good when we first arrived, but by the end, we were unable to flag anyone to get our check, to take our payment and return our card. I finally sent my reluctant little kid up there to the register a couple times. Would I try it again? I'm not sure, but I'd certainly read what other's recommended and try those instead. read more

Was craving some Chinese comfort food and stumbled upon this gem on Yelp. I placed a phone order for their Beef Noodle Soup, Fried Pork Buns, Spicy Minced Pork Dry Noodles, Sweet and Sour Spare Ribs, and Fried Pork Chop Over Rice box ($70 total before tip). When I got home, I saw that all the food was neatly packed and there were no leaks. However, the portion for the Beef Noodle Soup looked only half full in the container and the meat portion was super small (4 pieces total). The noodles and veggies were packed separately so it wouldn't be soggy, and that portion was decent. In terms of taste, the food was really yummy. Even though the portions for the beef noodle soup was small, it was still tasty and well made. I really enjoyed the spicy minced pork dry noodles (it did have some noodles clumped together, so maybe it's better fresh when you can mix things together right away). I loved the fried pork buns and am very excited to find a place that makes them authentically here in the Bay. The sweet and sour spare ribs were tender and the meat slid off the bones. We particularly liked the sea weed flavor. Chow Mein Shanghai style: Nothing to write home about for this entree. it was ok. We however did feel cheated of our chicken here. There were hardly any. Chicken Tonkatsu: Tasted alright and wasn't too oily. Chicken Xiaolongbao: This was the one we were waiting for. We had 3 orders for this one and it was good. They mention on the menu it takes 25 minute for this entree to be served. They were served in steel dumpling steamers stacked one on top of the other. This is a solid Chinese restaurant. I love their pan fried buns even though it does take awhile to come out (the menu says 25 mins). I usually get an app (pigs ear or salad fungus), a rice dish (pork chop over rice or sausage fried rice), a noodle dish (beef noodle soup or pork chop noodle soup), and pan fried buns. Between 2 people, it's definitely a good amount of food so expect to take some leftovers back. The food is very homey so it's perfect on a gloomy day. The inside is very clean and it's definitely a no frills place. Typical Chinese restaurant where the servers speak limited English. They do charge for tea now though so keep that in mind when they ask if you want tea or water. The tea is very good though! read more
