Where do I begin? Old Tony's isn't for everyone, and you can tell by the mixed reviews. But for me, it's an absolute gem. I love everything about it--the nostalgia, the worn carpet, the old solid wood chairs, the smell, the smiles, the conversations, and even those seagulls waiting for food at the windows. Every bit of the atmosphere has its own charm. Give me all of it! That said, I want to focus on two things: the food and the service. Food The menu is classic and dependable, with a few daily specials mixed in. I get it...it may not be the most unforgettable meal you'll ever have, but it's consistently solid. The steaks come out with beautiful grill marks and great flavor. The baked potatoes are a 10/10and those giant Idaho russets are divine! The house salad is another winner, topped with house dressing, egg, and bay shrimp. Honestly, can I get all larger portion of this, please! The lobster has always been one of my dad's favorites. It's his go-to order, and he loves dipping every bite into that melted butter. Overall, I'd rate the food a 7.5/10. Good, satisfying, and exactly what I expect when I come here. Service Now let's talk about the service. In the dozen or more times I've dined here, I've never had a bad experience. But this last visit was truly unforgettable. Took a walk on the pier and came across this spot. For a party of 2, we were seated quickly. We had such a nice view of the sunset + the beach. Connor served us and he was great! What can you say about a Staple in Redondo Beach that the whole family loves. You know it's a cozy spot, Low lights, infinity walls before it was a thing. My family celebrated many family special occasions here and my mom, now that my dad has passed wanted to have a family dinner. What a disappointment. The food was absolutely low quality, the salmon chowder does not taste smoked, the calamari steak was not edible. I asked our waiter who was an absolute gentleman if the restaurant had changed ownership, he said it was still owned by the same family. They need to take a very close look at their menu and elevate their game or I don't see how they will keep up with the competition. I'm sad I will never eat here again. I would say come here for the vibes, views, and nostalgia. The food is ok, but pretty overpriced for what it is. I got the coconut shrimp lunch combo, which came with clam chowder and a side. The clam chowder was pretty good. I appreciated that the table bread came with whipped butter. The coconut shrimps were fine but I made the mistake of getting "veggies" as my side. It was steamed broccoli, cauliflower, and carrots, but the kind that you get from a steamed bag from the frozen grocery aisle.. I'll stick with fries next time. The combo was $24, was one of the more affordable things on the menu. I got a window seat though, which opened right out to the water, so it was worth it to just hear the waves and enjoy the atmosphere during lunch. The servers were nice and attentive. I'd go again, maybe for sunset, and just expect to pay beach prices for average food. read more

The bartender Ian? Skinny, goofy looking, middle aged white guy is very unprofessional and unpleasant. He said he "didn't like our vibe and didn't want to deal with" and refused service. Which I would understand if we had done something to actually be treated that way. He immediately had attitude when we sat down and if I'm being honest he was the one with an "off vibe" lol. I first came to Tony's on the Pier with my parents in the 70s. The last time was in the late 80s. I ended up living in the West San Fernando Valley so Redondo Beach became a schlep for us. So it was a treat to go once again with friends from Long Beach. We had the best time. Melik was our server and he was outgoing and cheerful. He never rushed us. Our meals were good. They came with soup and salad. We ordered drinks and there was bread placed on the table. The food was abundant, warm and flavorful. The clam chowder was excellent as was the smoky salmon chowder. I had the seafood fettuccine. There were large shrimps and crab meat. So good. I took half of it home. The place is old school decor but really fun. We had a great table and good service. Service was fine, ambiance smelled of smoke from the 80's and dirty cocktail toppers from previous patrons littered the floor below my chair. Now the food is a different story. Although some things were okay, they were all kind of bland honestly. Crab cakes desperately needed salt. Salmon chowder was an experience and needed salt. The lobster was very rubbery but was still sweet and the butter helped immensely. Fries are fries. The house salad I would not recommend. Ceasar salad was great. The alcoholic drinks tasted like they forgot to add the alcohol except for anything with whiskey in it. Honestly paid a lot for what it was worth. Been a South Bay resident for 70 years. I've been to Tony's only twice, the first time 15 years ago and the second, yesterday. I'll be brief, because the place really isn't worth my time... or yours. The salmon chowder was luke warm and the claim chowder was cold and tasteless. The calamari plate was generous, served with WAY too much cauliflower. The seafood combo included a tiny piece of Atlantic cod, two breaded shrimp and three breaded scallops all served with unsalted and cold french fries. The seafood combo could be ordered at any Denny's or Red Lobster and it would be comparable. To be at the beach and be served food that was obviously breaded and frozen somewhere else was a massive disappointment. The place was dirty and the carpets were blackened. This place hasn't had an ounce of care since my previous visit 15 years ago. This place is a South Bay institution, but for the life of me I can't figure out why. It's time is clearly long past. The only saving grace was the waitress who was helpful and hustled the entire time we were there. Perhaps it's more fun at night when it's dark and the lights are up. For a few dollars more, go to Kincaids on the other end of the horseshoe pier, you'll be blown away by the difference. There's no need to go back. read more

"Old Tony's" is definitely dated, but it's sorta what I love about it! I love its rickety nature hovering above the pier for a view of the Pacific Ocean, the on point mai tais complete with Hawaiian shirts and kitschy take home souvenir glass, the unique salmon chowder and proficiently prepared seafood, the choice of sides straight out of the '60s. I'm into it. The servers are right out of a Vegas diner in the Frank Sinatra era. It's quirky and they don't even know it or care; it's what I love about it. First visit here after hearing about it for years from other people who've eaten here and how most love the food and the atmosphere. i don't know if anything has changed much from back then, but I just found it to be ok. Location: Right on the Redondo Beach Pier with ticketed parking. Some. people uber it here because parking can be expensive unless you don't mind walking to it. Food: Crab cakes platter with clam linguine was my choice. Crab cakes were nicely fried, but the crab itself was just ok otherwise. I just felt the cakes were missing something even though I used the sauce that came with it. Lackluster is what i'm saying here and needed more seasoning, The linguine I failed to find one clam in it and was just bland. Hmmmm.... 5/10 The chocolate cake I only took tastes of since I didn't order it. Not too bad on the sweetness level, but at least it wasn't overly sweet as in most restaurants.6/10 Service was good and I have no complaints here. Asked for items were brought in a timely manner and dishes cleared away promptly. Summary: As much as Old Tony's is an institution in the South Bay, it failed to wow me. Maybe I was expecting too much of the place? The only noteworthy praise from one of my dining companions was that the chips (fries) were really hot because they were freshly cooked.
