Wanted to grab some Taiwanese breakfast so we tried this place out. Service was casual, you order and pay at their kiosk, and then they bring the food out to you. Parking is convenient since they have designated parking in a shared lot. We ordered their cold sweet soymilk, hot salty soymilk, fried dough stick, and an order of popcorn chicken. The cold soymilks were not too sweet and pretty standard, but it hit the spot. It paired nicely with the fried dough stick. Their salty soymilk was good, but it was a bit bland. Their popcorn chicken was the best item in my opinion. The starchy coating was fried perfectly, and you can taste the Chinese five spice throughout. There was even fried basil leaves served with the chicken which was a nice touch and appreciated. Prices were a bit high for what it was, but these were NorCal prices so it was to be expected. A pretty decent spot if you have a craving for Taiwanese breakfast.

While the size is good and the flavors were there, the fantuans are quite dry - maybe they need to seran wrap them to keep the moisture in like other places, but I was so sad that the ones I had (pork chop and taiwanese sausage) were dry (mainly the rice)

Not sure what happened here but was disappointed with my order...fried donuts harder than necessary...preserved veggies was pickled green mustard...pork lean but flavorless..I think they forgot to season the popcorn chicken...MITK in Hayward is gold standard for fan tuan...

8 burritos were wrapped in about 15-20 minutes. I had two chill mandarin-speaking women inside, and it was fully ready to operate at 8:10 am with all the ingredients and drinks prepared. If you select quinoa, it's not a full quinoa wrap but instead just regular glutinous white rice with MAYBE a teaspoon of cooked quinoa dispersed in it. felt a little tricked. the rice itself is very satisfying though a little heavy at the ends and loose. i only tasted the classic flavor. youtiao is crunchy but not very crispy (kind of hard) but i like how it's cut into chunks. there's no pickled vegetables flavor or egg flavor even though it's a tea egg. i think overall there was a little too much rice/not enough flavor, you can really only taste the pork floss. if this is your first time eating fantuan and you aren't sure if you will like it, i would definitely recommend this burrito because it wont taste too strong. and for the price, it's a VERY filling meal. including tax, it came out to ~$10 per burrito (i got 4 classic x $7.5 + 4 pork/sausage x $9.99 =$70 pre-tax) which is not bad, but I found the classic flavor too bland/basic for $10. i would get a different rice burrito. still, 5 stars for a new and authentic restaurant with a unique quinoa option.

Food is good and the service is better! This place is joining the fight to remedy the dearth of Taiwanese breakfast available in the area. Shaobing youtiao and fantaun can now be yours on the weekdays. Ordered a combo with a classic fantaun, popcorn chicken, and cold, sweet soy milk. Will be back to try everything else. The hard-working family running the place is so welcoming and kind. you'll feel like family (minus the questions about your career, when will you finally get married and have kids, and whether or not you've gained weight/look tired and need to sleep earlier/have gotten a tan because you never listen when I tell you to always wear long sleeves and a hat outside).

Happy to see that Old Taro is back in business and has a new location! It's located in Fremont in the same shopping center as Paris Baguette, Starbucks, Chase Bank, Ranch 99, and several other restaurants. The space is fairly small, with about 10 tables, so seating is currently indoors only. There's a self-service kiosk for ordering, or you can place your order at the front counter/register. They accept both cash and card. One big change is that Old Taro no longer serves noodles. The new menu features rice burritos, fried wontons, veggie chips, soy milk, and a few other options. The portions are generous, and I found the prices to be very reasonable. Since they're still fairly new at this location, the wait time can be a little long. I waited about 30 minutes for my order. That said, the owner was incredibly sweet and kind, which made the experience even more pleasant. I would definitely come back in the future, but next time I'll probably place my order ahead of time for pickup. Happy to see Old Taro back and excited to support them again!

This was the best 飯糰(rice ball/rice burrito) I have ever had in the Bay Area. Its rice was just good in the hardness and softness. The portion of the rice was perfect to the size of the rice ball(飯糰). Rice is key success of a rice ball(飯團). I loved the spicy radish pickle most! Spicy was in good level that didn't take away the flavor of the other ingredients and taste. Crispy油條 is good made, although it is never be my thing. Egg gave the rice ball飯糰 additional flavor. Ordering on kiosk and counter are both available. Quick and easy for ordering and payment. Staff are nice and friendly. Parking is not a big problem, although it could be busy but cars come and go. There are many tables inside the store. Space is generally good. Its menu is simple. Hopefully, some of the iconic Taiwanese food in the "old" Old Taro will come back someday in the future.

Amazing food? Doesn't this make you hungry?

飯糰不如小滿。。豬肉蛋很乾很柴不如美而美。價錢也沒有便宜多少。。 probably adjust the pricing or quality to make it worth the money. 燒餅油條。。both too soft. Not sure why the price point is so high for lower than mid quality food。highly recommend not buying breakfast items here

Fan Tuan with Taiwanese Sausage. Bomb!! Went on Thursday at 4p, no line. Good rice ratio :) Please stay here forever so I can have my Fan Tuan fix!

Very disappointing. I bought rice rolls from Old Taro today and the fried dough sticks inside were completely burnt -- dark brown/black and bitter to the point that I had to pull them out. The rice was also extremely hard and dry. The photos speak for themselves. I'm surprised food in this condition passed any kind of quality check and was served to a customer. Most of it was simply inedible and ended up being wasted.

You can see in my pictures how cute the decorations were as well. Food I think is pretty typical Taiwanese, which you can actually really feel when you order the hot pot, because it has that relatively clear/relatively not oily flavor to it that I think is quite rare for hot pot outside of Taiwan. I also had a side of pork trotters, which also came out surprisingly not that oily. Would strongly recommend this place if you're a fan of traditional South Chinese foods, but not really a fan of oily, overly heavy meals! Service was overall very good, I actually had the sense that they were paying attention more or less the entire time to immediately refill water and other such service items. They also went out of their way to make sure the hot pot thing was constantly lit. Anyways, there's a lot of competition for this type of cuisine in Fremont, but if you're anywhere in the area or have some time to spend, I think spending it relaxing in this restaurant would be a great use of time! The food is solid if you're looking for that type of cuisine - and the service and decor is top-notch.

The version here is atypical in that the dipping sauce was not the garlicky sweet soy sauce but lighter with no visible garlic. The dipping sauce was also poured on top of the tofu rather than on the side. It was enjoyable nevertheless. The tofu was perfectly fried on the outside and moist on the inside. With a generous heaping of chili sauce and outstanding pickled cabbage, this dish was a good reinterpretation of the Taiwanese classic. We tried various tasty bento boxes- fried pork chops, Taiwanese sausage, popcorn chicken. Each bento boxes came with side servings of steamed vegetables, stewed egg with bean curd sheet or mini spring rolls. We also had the pork knuckles over rice, which had very tender stewed pork knuckles over rice with meat sauce, bamboo shoots and a stewed egg. Beef noodle soup is an iconic dish in Taiwanese cuisine, and at Old Taro I gave it high marks. The broth was very aromatic and mildly spicy which was perfect for me. You can specify the noodles and I requested the thick flat noodles which really soaked up the broth. The bowl was a good size and filled with prodigious amounts of tender beef chunks, tripes and soft tissues. The meat was tender so it went down without getting between my teeth. Taiwanese desserts are a must, and here you can choose from a selection of shave ice, tofu puddings, regular as well as fried mochis. We had the cute little bathtub filled with taro shave ice, grass jelly, colorful sweet rice dumplings and a panda shaped mango sorbet. A second dessert was soft tofu puddings covered with the colorful sweet dumplings. This came with a side dish of two incredibly flavorful taro cookies. So many dishes we wanted to try. We came in around 11:40am on a Sunday after spending the morning at Ardenwood farms nearby. We had a pretty big party, 3 families with a total of 4 toddlers. Restuarant was maybe a little under half full at the time and we were able to get seated immediately. The older lady taking orders which I assume is the owner seemed very distracted, going from table to table even though the place was not that busy. She wound up telling us to write down our order ourselves and give it to her because she was too busy to come by to take our order herself. Food service was super slow. It was an hour after putting our order in before our last dish arrived. This really should not be the case with most Taiwanese food... Thankfully the fried rice and chow mein arrived first so the kids had stuff to eat, but they were getting super antsy by the end of the hour. Unfortunately it felt like the kitchen was prioritizing delivery orders over those dining in. Stinky tofu was ok, the chicken roll was the best out of the taiwanese dishes, the beef noodle soup was painfully average. I really do not see what all the fuss is about for this place. The food does not outweigh the slipshod service. We are not coming back again.

The skin was also perfectly QQ. We also ordered their classic pork and cabbage dumplings. Wow. So flavorful and clean. They don't skimp on the meat portions here, that's for sure. Lastly, we got their braised beef noodle soup. Noodles were consistent and QQ, though the broth was a little bland. Albeit, this is a dumpling spot after all! Service was great--food came out super fast and water was always refilled. Perhaps the establishment has taken in the feedback already bc tbh I am not seeing what the negative reviews were talking about hahaha! Perfect mom and pop vibes all around! I WILL BE COMING BACK

The soup dumplings…read morehave increased 20% in price over the past year, and the updated menu is no longer worth the shrinking portions. At 14.99 for 8 soup dumplings, each dumpling is $2+ after tax and tip! While the dumplings are still tasty, they are smaller than ever and even look deflated due to the lack of meat filling. The braised beef soup also felt lacking and smaller than before. After raving about this place for years, it is unfortunately time for me to look for a new go-to spot.
