Excellent. Excellent!!!!! When you go ask for iris. They're are all good with he service but she's usually the when I go. We had the fried pork chips yellow rice with beans. Fried sweet plantain and mofongo (pork). It's the best I've eaten and I'm Dominican and grew up eating it. It's most and fresh and the sauce is on the thinner side which I personally prefer. If you're looking for an authentic Puerto Rican restaurant this is the place. I live in New York and come here just to eat. Don't listen to the reviews where people are saying they don't like things. Most of these people don't typically eat authentic Caribbean spanish food. I'm a regular here and I'm Latina and I'm aware of what it's suppose to taste like. I went here last night with a Groupon. Service was sooooo sloooowww. The food was actually delicious, but I can't say it was an over all great experience. The Groupon was $19 at was supposedly a 55% savings off the regular menu. It wasn't. The total would have been $25 if we hadn't used the Groupon (Appetizer and 2 entrées). AND I was charged a $7.50 "service charge" on my check. The "appetizer" that was included in the deal a $2 pastille (just one), not the Sampler or other full sized appetizers. My issue is not with the food but with the way they handle Groupon. It started with a special Groupon Menu, which was just a smaller selection of their original menu. Which seemed fine until I asked if a plate was filling and was told that it was a Groupon portion so its smaller than the regular menu version of the same dish. After doing the math, buying a Groupon for establishment was not a good idea. I would not recommend buying a Groupon for this place nor would I come back based on their business practices! read more

This is merely the shell of its mother restaurant Old San Juan on rt. 46..its called old San Juan express bc its purpose is really take out. The restaurant really does not have any ambience. Definitely not if you compare it to Old San Juan #1. The food here is great we ordered two orders of the pernil with boiled yuca and platanos Maduras. It was fantastic. We were expecting to get delivery in but despite the fact that they were open till 8:30 pm they Said they Stopped doing delivery for the night already. It was 6:30...we are all getting over the flu so going out wasn't an option. So my bf had to go pick it up . They also said the credit card machine was down (again). We usually go to the one on 46, for years now. This place would be great if they got there act together. They are inconsistent with when they will deliver food.But the dishes are very good and the counter people are very nice. read more

First and last time ordering from here. I ordered take out, when I arrived home, the grilled chicken was not fully cooked. Pink on the inside. I called and spoke with the owner who apologized and claimed that it must've been a mistake as they check the temperature of the chicken serving it. I finally agreed to let them bring me new chicken. This time I requested something different in hopes that it'll be better prepared. The stew chicken was horrible, after a few bites, I immediately got sick from the food. As a native if hudson county, this places prices are ridiculous!!!!!! Their food is salty and not even worth the money. I'm a very patient person and have given this place multiple times to redeem itself, but, unfortunately, they have failed to do so. I've been here about 15 times in the last 2 years or so and I only come back because their food is actually damn good, but everything else about this shanty-town food shack is terrible. Most of the time the staff sounds half-dead. The lady who answers the phone most of time sounds like your call is a tremendous burden to her. Besides that, they lack the competency to take/make an order correctly. All 15 times i've been here, something was wrong with my order. They don't give me the right rice and beans, they gave me a cheese instead of chicken empanada, one time they even gave me a completely different man's order! Moving on...they're website, grubhub, and even yelp shows they have lunch specials for $6.95. But they never have a pork chop lunch special! Apparently, it's only on "certain days"... So why isn't that said on your menu? So why don't you tell me what days you offer it? (I've only ever successfully gotten a lunch special once in my life) they always make me buy the dinner special which is an entirely larger portion for even more money. If they have pork chops to serve for the dinner portion, why can't it be served as a lunch portion too? Nevertheless, no one can ever give me a straight answer. Some say that's not a menu option, some say that's not how we operate, some even say pork chops can only be cooked at full size dinner portions at a time! Ridiculous. Furthermore, twice i've ordered online and both times were horrendous. I show up an hour and 48 minutes after i've placed the order and they tell me they've run out of an item I ordered. Why was I not contacted earlier with this info? Why wasn't at least the rest of my food made? Why did they wait for me to show up to say anything? I had to wait almost 25 minutes in the store for my food to be cooked before I was on my way. The second time, I show up and they have the audacity to say I ordered wrong online! I ordered wrong?!?! I ordered what it says you have online, either way, I left in a frenzy with no food to go back to work. I sat down at this so-called restart once...and never again. The service was unimaginably slow and the cashier/server seemed like she didn't give a darn about us. Not only that, but we were charged gratuity at a table for 3!! 20% up charge for only me and my parents. The only shed of light in this shit storm of imcoptence and carelessness is one lady by the name of Clara I believe. She is the only one in my multiple endeavors with this piss-poor establishment that has shown me any degree of compassion in her customer service. Kudos to her, but with a 2 year window to show improvement and a lack of, only expect a nightmare thrill ride from this hell hole. read more

This is a customer service/Groupon related review only. The voucher I paid for was for take out OR dine in as expressly stated in the fine print. When we ordered for pick up and came in to get our food the business refused to accept our Groupon and said it was for dine in only. Unbelievable!!! We got an excuse that ours wasn't for take out when our voucher specifically stated in plain English it was for both. No matter the quality we will never call this business again. I'v been here several times. I've been to this location and the previous location in Saddle Brook. The food is very good. I celebrated my mom's birthday at both locations. I would recommend this place if you are looking for authentic Puerto Rican food. read more

First of all, I am a born and raised Puertorrican. Having said that I know if the food is good or not and if the price is right or reasonable. And I was pretty exited to go there because we usually miss our sazon (flavor). The pernil is pretty good but the arroz con gandules is ok. The gandules are not fresh and they charge you like if you are eating steak in a pretty good restaurant. The roasted chicken is awful and on top of that they charge me $12 for white rice with roasted chicken!!!! We were 4 and we did not order from the menu, we ordered from what they already had. Each plate was about $12 plus beverages that we have to go after. They never went to the table to see if we need something. I was the one who did everything,except of putting the food on the plates and they charge me with approx 20% of service... Yes!!! The service is already on the ticket!!! What service???? I don't know if there is any other Puertorrican restaurant nearby, but if you can avoid this place, do it!!! That's no even worth it!!! It's unbelievable that in another restaurant that we visited on Edgewater with a pleasant view to the Hudson River with host, waiters, I mean a whole staff with a great service, the plates were around $6 to $9 and they don't charge you for service. You tip what you want to tip! The restaurant is Cuban so the food is pretty much the same but in this Cuban restaurant the quality of the food is way better than in that Old San Juan express rest. Me and my husband went to San Juan ll during lunch time. I had a small soup and a quarter chicken leg, and my husband had the beef stew lunch special. When we went to pay the bill the amount total $19.89. The female owner charged me the normal tax of 1.59 and she charged me $2.69 for gratuity. First of all she never serviced me although we ate there. I ordered the food and pick it up from the counter. When I mentioned to her about the gratuity she said that she added it on so I wouldn't have to leave a tip. I told her I don't mind leaving a tip if I get table service. The point I'm trying to make is CHECK YOUR RECEIPTS AT SAN JUAN THEY ARE RIP OFFS!!! and they charge a $1.50 and tax for a can of soda save your money and go to 7-11 for a $.99 gulp. read more

The zombie lady that is there every day who don't smile or show much emotion should be behind the counter serving food only, that's if she is even capable of that . Terrible customer service!!! I hope the owner reads this because I review this with a passion for PR food and its from my heart.I am Puerto Rican and know and love my food. I would say from a business standpoint the majority of your customers are Caucasian, then Latin and to a smaller extent black etc. Even if PRs only make up 10% of your business you will lose that 10% when you have Mexicans and Dominicans cooking the meals in the back the way they feel it should be cooked. No knock to them or their food but I come to a PR restaurant to eat PR food. I dont go there anymore because I noticed the food had a different flavor other than PR. Now this may be fine for those who dont know the difference but I and many other PRs do. Good luck I hope you guys heed my words and do the right thing. Hi visited this restaurant me and my son, I have ordered from them before the food is great, sadly to say I will never go back and sit in small dining room the customer service is horrible they rob the customer, the man behind counter told me my bill was 25.65 when I got home I looked at my bill it said 45 dollors they had the audacity to buy a 20 per cent gradituy on my bill he drop off the two plates and I never saw him again we got are own drinks and cleaned are table I was a waitress my whole life I never heard of adding a gratuity on a check for two people parties of ten or more I have they also charged me an extra entree and it was only a side order the place is dead so they rip the customer off., when I called she said it's on the menu that if you sit the computer adds a 20 percent gratituity bullshit it's horrible and wrong that's why they dead inside other people are posting complaints about what the doing I think it's illegal I'm reporting them to the better buisness bureau very upset this is not right soon or later they will shut their doors because of their greed! read more

I have been going to Old San Juan Express for a while now and have tried a lot of their dishes. What I love about it is that it is authentic. It reminds me of the dishes that my grandmother made for the family when I was a kid back on the island in Moca. Those were great times. This place is great! The only reason they're getting 4 instead of 5 stars is because it's inconsistent. Some days, the mofongo is soooo good. Other days, it's too salty or too garlicky and I can't eat it. It's the only thing on the menu I've seen inconsistency with, which I guess is good. Anyways, worth checking out. I still go often. There are not many Puerto Rican resturants around. You are more likely to find Mexican, Peruvian, or Colombian establishments. So, I think its worth the trip and experience. I love the arroz con gandules and carne asado or bacalo. The lunch specials are 6.95 ...reasonable for the portion. Make sure you try the Pasteles. Thats real Puerto Rican. Seriously, no other spanish country makes them. There 3.00 each ...I wish it was less but the work involved in making them is why they have to charge that amount.... My waitress is Clara.... she greets me with a smile and is always accommodating. Puerto Rican food is one of my favorites. read more

I've been here about 5 times. As far as what some of the other customers have said, yes - it's usually empty. To be honest I didn't think it would stay in business long because I never see more than 1 or 2 customers. The staff - never seems happy to see you. I have never gotten the standard "Good afternoon, welcome to..." greeting that most restaurants give. Instead it's a 5-10 minute wait before someone acknowledges you and they always seem annoyed as if we interrupted them from something more important. The food - not the greatest. It's passable if you are really hungry and have very little options. I've gone there because of convenience and I really like mofongo. Their mofongo is ok. I've had better. As for pricing - BE AWARE - the last time I went I ordered the mofongo which is listed in their menu as $10.95. When I went to pay I handed the waitress a $20 and she gave me back $6 and change. I asked where the rest of my change is and she said that's it. I said "no, isn't it $10.95" and pointed to the menu. Her response was that the menus were old (they're the only ones I've ever seen here) and that they had raised their prices. She said new menus were still being printed. Now I'm not a restaurant owner but isn't it a little misleading to have menus that say one price but charge another? And she didn't even honor the price when I called her out on it - which most decent places will do with no hesitation. Either they are horrible at managing their restaurant by getting accurate menus or they are just scamming people $1-2 per meal. In reading all the other reviews I wonder if this was that "hidden tip" other reviewers mentioned. Either way I think I'll skip the random pricing next time and look for another place that sells mofongo, a better one at that. read more
