Old Place Cafe is a restaurant that I grew up coming to and there have been a couple of changes, but it remains largely the same as I remember it. They offer northern chinese dishes (think noodles, dumplings, not rice dishes) in a quaint space filled with tables and benches. You order at the counter, find your seat, and they bring your food to you. Utensils, water and tea, and any other condiments are self serve as well. My favorite items here are the liang pi (cold wheat noodles), zha jiang mian, guo tie (potstickers), and the red oil wontons. You will find that all of the food here is hearty and filling, so I recommend also grabbing a small cold dish in the refrigerator next to the cashier to cut some of the oiliness. It's hard to go wrong here with the food, really. The dumplings of all varieties are homemade and cooked to perfection. The noodles are their staples which they do very well. An additional item that I will sometimes order in the winter is the lamb noodle soup with thick noodles (yes, you can request thick noodles but the default noodle is thin). Overall, the food is very comforting and the whole restaurant has a homey vibe that definitely stirs my childhood memories. The prices here are always more than fair, the food is consistently good, and the owner is always friendly. I will have to warn about a slight language barrier, so it's better to come with someone who is proficient in Mandarin though it is not a hard and fast rule. It used to be good, but things were so different this last visit I thought they changed owners. and that the new owners didn't care about the restaurant anymore. from service to food, it was a bad experience. we had been coming for like a decade, never had a problem with service OR food, so for me to write this review is saying something. I'm trying to be nice by giving an extra star for old times sake. the new chick has no customer service skills. it took them a while to bring one of the dishes, and when I arrived it was cold and tasted different. it's supposed to be hot. remember this is not my first time here. i order this dish almost every time I come. I told her it was cold, like been sitting out way too long. room temp. not a single degree above. and shes like no, it's hot. Just flat out denied what i said. like really? shes doubting my temperature sensing abilities? lol she walked away and ignored me after. she sent the owner after but the owner just made excuses for her. we just left immediately. we have come here dozens of times over the years. never had a single problem. something has changed with how they're doing things. the liver appetizer was hard, dry, and flavorless too. 2 out of 3 dishes tasted different. 1 was flat out cold when its supposed to be mouth burning hot and the attitude was WAY too much. skip this place. it's a hole in the wall with bad food and bad service. For the price you can't beat it!! I've been coming to this spot since I was a child, and they have never let me down. You can order classic chinese noodles, soups, dumplings, and appetizers. I ordered a bowl of noodles and it came out to around $11 after tip! The noodles are always a hit, and the texture is great. I tried the szechuan hot broth noodles this time, and while the noodles were great, the soup was a tad too watery. However, the beef noodle soup is a classic and any of the dumplings or potstickers are a hit!! The interior is also quaint with benches at each table to replicate traditional chinese restaurants, and the staff are also super friendly. Rumor has it this is the famous Xiong's Cafe in Bellaire that closed down. I can't confirm it, but it's been 5+ years since I've had Xiong and the Zha Jiang Noodle is exactly like the one I used to eat. I have been on the hunt for this noodle dish for years and could never find one comparable to Xiong. Huge portion, soft chewy noodles, meat/tofu sauce, and sliced cucumbers. Gosh I missed this dish. We also got the Beef Noodle Soup, Beef Cabbage Dumplings, and Lamb Skewers. Everything was so good and comforting. Lamb skewers were hearty but not tough, fragrant from the cumin, and did not have a strong lamb odor. Beef noodle soup was savory with a nice kick, and dumplings had the perfect dumping to meat ratio. I notice for both noodle dishes there are a lot more noodles than meat, and I wish it was more balanced, but the concept of this place is very carb-focused. We chowed down everything so fast I forgot to snap a picture. The nostalgic flavors brought back pre-pandemic memories devouring a big bowl of noodle at Xiong's Cafe and pass out from food coma afterward, which will probably happen again today. read more

There aren't many good asian restaurants in the Sugar Land area, but this spot is great! The restaurant name is literally called "Old Place," lives up to its name. In Chinese, it means a place you always go to, and that's exactly what it feels like--somewhere familiar and comforting. If I don't know where to eat, this is my go-to. The ladies who work there are really nice, and while it's not the best restaurant out there, it's a solid choice for a homey meal, especially for lunch. My favorite dish is the thick dry noodle. They also have beef noodle soup and fried rice, with most of their menu leaning toward Northern Chinese flavors. If you haven't checked it out yet, I'd recommend giving it a try. 老地方 ("lao di fang") is a literally an "old place" but the meaning is a place where old friends meet or get together. The homey vibe with zero pretense, sweet service and tasty food is not too different with places I frequented back in NY. I guess this really is an old place. It doesn't look like much from the outside and won't look like much on the inside either. There are some bench style seats meant for slightly larger groups, but this is a place not meant for a lot of peeps. It's run by an older Northern Chinese couple, a literal "mom and pop" spot, and they definitely take their time with making the food. There is self-serve tea, a little bit of English, and a lot of Mandarin speaking locals. It's also cash only. The food is more of a 麵館 ("mian guan") or a place that specializes in noodles, dumplings, and baos, a common theme for northern Chinese spots. There are some classics, such as their zha Jiang noodle, a hearty bolognese type noodle dish with meat gravy and thicker noodles. The fried guo tie dumplings are thicker on the skin, a doughier alternative than what folks might be used to. The rou jia mo sandwiches are often called "Chinese hamburgers" but here they're called sliders and feature a nice crisp on the outside with lots of juicy lamb and herbs on the inside. There are other dishes reflective of other regions offered here, which might seem left of field but is likely necessary for their patrons. They have soup dumplings (小籠包) and pan-fried buns (生煎包) which are homemade but a tad on the doughier side. Their liangpi is perfectly room temperature but not much else beyond the wheat gluten. I appreciate their version of red oil dumplings (紅油抄手) even if there is little to no kick. The dan dan noodles are heartier than their Sichuan counterpart, which means more noodle and ground pork, but considerably less spice. All in all, I really appreciate what they have to offer. I anticipate that in the coming months and hopefully years, that I'll be able to make my way through their entire menu. They have self-serve water, tea, hot sauce, and utensils. The menu is both in English and Chinese. You can now pay by credit card. One of their menu has pictures. We ordered beef noodle soup, lamb (so tender) soup, pan-fried pork dumplings, chicken lo mein, and spicy wonton. All of them were delicious. Old place cafe is one of my favorite mom and pop shop when it comes down to Chinese food. When entering their restaurant, it feels like you been transported to China. They have wooden benches and beautiful paintings on the walls to help set a unique homey feeling. Their flavors are unique towards their region from where they are from. Their is a lot of variety when it comes down to their menu. They have lots of dumpling and noodles options. One of my favorite dish is their appetizer onion pancake. It is crispy, flaky and delicious. Today I tried the Dan Dan mien (noodles) which is a peanut based noodle with ground pork. It was yummy and creamy. When you first get the noodles, make sure to mix the noodles around to mix the sauce into the noodles. If you want their pan fried dumplings is also amazing. The crispy, hot dumplings is very funny. But be careful it is very hot when it come out. For their service, we went during lunch hour and they were busy. There was a worker who help kept the place nice and tidy even during their busy hour. This is truly a restaurant that are in existence for years and offers traditional northern comfort foods. One factor that makes a dining experience extraordinary, besides the obvious determinants of Food and Venue, is the companion who shares the meal with. Such was a memorable lunch for two food lovers when we met at a mom-and-pop spot in Sugar Land called Old Place. As an adventurous foodie who gets excited about trying different takes on traditional dishes, my newly acquainted friend, J, was already having a lively conversation with the lady running the restaurant when I arrived. Once we sit down, with the recommendation of the nice lady from San Dong province, food orders are fired off rapidly. We were told to eat the Rou Jia Mo (肉夾饃) first once the food came, Braised Pulled Pork in a Flatbread made with Wheat flour dough with Yeast, which is like a Chinese Meat Sandwich or Hamburger. The filling is flavorful, fluffy, and moist, almost like the texture of Barbacoa, held together nicely by the light and porous Arepa-like Flatbread. A good start to the feast to come. I'm always interested in Dan Dan Noodles (担担面) because it's a simple noodle dish but different places have their own twist. We tasted Sesame and Soy Sauce, with a good spicy kick, and tasty Minced Pork and Crushed Peanuts, all mixed into a bowl of delectable Dry Noodles. I'm happy to get to try this. As J said, the intensity of the Dan Dan Noodles is so well-complimented by the cooler dish of Shaan Xi Liang Pi (陕西凉). The process of making Liang Pi is quite laborious, including several repeated processes to separate gluten and starch by washing the dough in cold water a few times. It's served with Solidifired Gluten (麵筋), in a lighter garlicky vinegary chili oil sauce, and julienned vegetables. We also have the popular Shanghainese dish, Pan-fried Buns (生煎包), which has Meat fillings, encased in a semi-leavened dough. The top part of the Bun is cooked through the steaming heat of the covered pan, while the bottom part is fried to a perfect crisp, giving the Buns 2 different textures to bite on. How can we not order their Lamb Dumplings (羊肉水饺)? Dumplings are a more prominent staple in Northern China and the owners of the restaurant have ethnic ties with Inner Mongolia who value Lamb as the main source of protein. We totally devoured them, and J did most of the hard work. I have been missing Xiong's Cafe 老地方 on Bellaire since it's permanently closed during the pandemic. We found out from the boss lady that both locations were originally founded by a husband and wife team, but have since then been sold to different owners. This only location in Sugar Land has been operated by the same San Dong family for a long time. They pride themselves on doing the kitchen work themselves the traditional way without hiring outside help. It is authentic regional Chinese cuisine for sure if you're the kind who appreciates it. Throughout the meal, we get to know each other and let our thoughts and opinions run free, like old friends who are familiar with each other for years. I've learned a lot from J and am amazed that the Universe has its own mysterious ways of bringing people together from different parts of the world. I will come back to check out their Lamb Noodle Soup, which was my top favorite dish at the old Xiong's Cafe. Old Place has been a staple in and around Sugar Land and just about every Asian living in this area has visited at some point in their life. This place specializes in noodle soups and dumplings. Management has gone through multiple owners throughout the years, and I'm glad that the recipes and quality of food have stayed relatively the same for the most part. Sometimes this place is poppin, and other times its not. Sometimes it does well with cleaning the facility, sometimes its a bit dirty. Over the years, the menu prices have slowly crept up. It sports a pretty good condiment area if different vinegars, and chili sauces. At my latest visit, I ordered the Lamb Noodle Soup and my father got the "Great Gravy Noodles" or "Da Lu Mein". Both bowls of noodles came out with generous portions. However, I believe there could have been a bit more lamb pieces in my bowl. The taste was decent, it was not overly salted and noodles were cooked well. We also ordered some boiled dumplings and got cold appetizer for a bucks. Both which are done well. At the end of the day, Old Place Cafe serves up good ol' comfort food. Its not the best around town, but it'll certainly hits the spot if you have a hankering for noodle soups and dumplings. I'm trying out local business around me and I stumbled upon this place while I was shopping at Welfresh (same parking lot) I walked in and the main dining area is blocked off and you can only do takeout right now. I ordered the spicy Szechuan dumplings and Dan Dan noodles. The Dan Dan noodles were a large portion which I actually liked but wish it could have been a little bit spicier. The dumplings didn't have enough meat and was more just dough. I'll skip the dumplings next time and I'll try some other noddle dish next time or order the Dan Dan noodles again. It's a good enough option instead of driving all the way to Chinatown. Also, I wish they would add prices on their menu. When I ordered my two items she just said $14 but when I got the receipt to pay it was $12, It was actually cheaper but it's nice to know how much everything is. read more

This place gets no stars! It was my boyfriends first time here. He ordered to go the night before, and the next morning when he opened his food.. THERE WAS MOLD ON IT! He brought this dish back to the restaurant and demanded his money back! This is absolutely disgusting and extremely unsanitary. The worker there only wanted to give his money back for that one dish instead of the entire meal, and stated that "this happens all the time." He did not even receive an apology. I only mention it because it adds an element of in-group credibility to my authenticity claim and quality of the cuisine being served. I've worked my way around the menu, but I keep coming back for the soup. My favorites are Spicy Tomato Beef Noodle Soup (NS6) @ $5.95 and Pork Dumpling in Spicy Beef Soup (D9) @ $4.95. The portions are Texas sized and served in 'Jethro' sized bowls. You have a choice of "skinny' or "flat" noodle with any soup and the dumpling soups come with 12 delicious dumplings or you can mix and match 6 dumplings with your choice of noodle. The Spicy Tomato Beef Noodle Soup comes with a generous helping of beef, yet it is well balanced with large chunks of tomato, cabbage and bok choy. With the Pork Dumpling soup you have a choice of three types of dumplings: chives, cilantro or cabbage. I find that the pork and cilantro blend compliments the spicy/savory beef broth best. I wanted to like this place because my aunt raves about their dumplings and how wonderful their food was. I don't like dumplings much but these tasted like they came from the freezer at Ranch 99. However, everything I tried was bland. The onion pancakes were decent but I wish there was something I could eat with them. The sides of tofu and salad didn't taste like anything. Knew in advance they are cash only, very little English is spoken by staff, but the food is good. We were not disappointed. This might be harsh, but I have no idea how Old Place Cafe gets by. Their food is average at best. You'll find a nice variety of typical Chinese cheap eats -- dumplings, noodle bowls, etc. Sadly, what I find to be most memorable about Old Place Cafe is the roaches (YES, plural). I went to the cafe with my parents for dinner and was getting together our utensils. I picked up a soup spoon and there was a 1" roach conveniently taking a rest inside! My mom told the waitress, and she merely shrugged and gave a half-hearted apology. If you are looking for something fancy with table clothes and linen napkins, keep walking. If you want wonderful, homestyle food served with a smile and not a lot of chit chat, this is a great place for you! It is located in a strip plaza just off of Highway 6. The menu is on a poster board with hand written English names under the Chinese descriptions. And a small English paper menu. There is often a language barrier but they can take your order accurately and always have a smile for you. Just bring cash, they don't do credit cards. The pan seared pork dumplings are plentiful and REALLY good. Very reasonable prices. We've had the broth dumplings which were really good and the pork and house fried rice. Honestly this is where we go for dumplings. Lots of vegan friendly dishes as well. This is one of the hidden gems in Sugar Land that mostly locals know about. We go at least once a month. read more

First time here, got lost at first since the address provided by Yelp was on the opposite side of the highway of where the restaurant actually is lol From reading a couple of past reviews, I was hesitant to try this place due to 1) Past cases of roaches found in their food. 2) Crowded 3) At times rude However, I am always willing to try any dish that has lamb in it so I took my chances and got the Lamb Noodle to go and I guess I was lucky. I didn't get any roaches, the cafe was actually empty when I came in (4 ish), and the lady that gave me my meal was super nice. She kept on mentioning to me about this supermarket next door though, I guess its a place we should check out? lol The meal came out to be 7 something but I swear I saw on the menu it was just 6 dollars... I guess they charge 50 cents for anybody getting to go items? Not sure, I'm only assuming that since I saw a big sign outside with the number 50 and chinese words underneath it lol Either way, it didn't matter because my to go lamb noodle was enough to feed both me and my friend.
