Our first attempt to visit Old Hickory House on Monday didn't work out because they're closed on Mondays. Fortunately, we were still in the area and made it back today. Old Hickory House traces its roots back to 1955, and the Tucker location, which opened in 1974, is now the last remaining Old Hickory House restaurant. The place still has that classic Southern barbecue feel with wood-paneled walls, comfortable booths, and decades of history around every corner. Fans of Smokey and the Bandit will also recognize the famous Diablo Sandwich connection. According to restaurant lore, Jackie Gleason ad-libbed the line, "Give me a Diablo sandwich and a Dr Pepper, and make it fast. I'm in a hurry!" during the movie. The line became one of the film's most memorable quotes, and Old Hickory House proudly keeps the Diablo Sandwich on the menu today. After hearing how spicy it is, I decided to leave that challenge for someone else. I ordered the sliced pork platter with collard greens and a bowl of Brunswick stew. Most of the pulled pork I eat is shredded, so I decided to try sliced pork for a change. I enjoyed the different texture, and it actually changed the way the barbecue sauce interacted with the meat. The pork was tender and smoky with some excellent bark mixed throughout. The barbecue sauce was different from both the Carolina-style sauces and the thicker sauces I'm used to back home in Ohio. It wasn't overly thick, had a flavor all its own, and complemented the pork well. Our server made sure we never ran short, bringing out extra sauce whenever we needed it. The collard greens were very good. The leaves seemed larger and darker than many collard greens I've had elsewhere, and they were flavorful enough that I enjoyed eating them just as they were without adding anything extra. I've now had Brunswick stew at three different Georgia barbecue restaurants during this trip, and Old Hickory House's version was the most stew-like of the three. It was thicker, chunkier, and loaded with visible tomatoes, corn, and meat. The menu describes it as "zesty," and that's an accurate description. It had a little more kick than the other versions I've tried this week and was clearly a recipe they take pride in. The service was excellent. Our server was attentive throughout the meal and took care of all the little things that make a difference. She checked on us regularly, brought out extra sauces without hesitation, and even offered to-go beverages before we left. Nothing felt rushed, and she made us feel welcome from start to finish. One final note: the portions were generous. In fact, I couldn't even finish all of the sliced pork, so part of it came home with me for later. Old Hickory House isn't trying to be trendy or reinvent barbecue. It's simply continuing a tradition that has been serving the Atlanta area for more than seventy years, and there's something refreshing about that. Old Hickory house is the best I've been coming here for over 40 years and the food quality is always the same. As soon as you walk in, you smell the amazing barbecue aromas that are baked into the wood over the years. The restaurant looks just like it did back in the 70s when they filmed the smoky and the bandit there. That was greeted promptly by my server on my last visit as well as previous visits and they always do a good job checking up on you while you're eating to make sure you don't need anything else. I had heard from my friends that Old Hickory House was really good Southern restaurant! This is fairly popular place that has old country farmhouse vibes and plenty of seating. There is a breakfast (served all day) and regular menu with lots of options. Both the service and server were efficient and prompt! We got the Fried Green Tomatoes, Scrambled Egg and Cheese Biscuit, Old Fashioned Country Boy Biscuit (Corned Beef Hash and Country Sausage). The biscuits were really soft and flaky. This was a breath of fresh air as a lot of biscuits I have gotten in prior restaurants were rock solid. I enjoyed my Scrambled Egg and Cheese Biscuit, although I wish I added a meat to it for that extra taste. I really liked my Fried Green Tomatoes! They tasted just like I expected them to taste. My friends liked the dishes that they got and said that one cannot go wrong with anything on the menu. I would probably rate this place a 3.5/5 stars if I could, only because I am not a big fan of Southern food. But I do think that this restaurant gets the job done for folks who like Southern comfort food. Plus, it is priced very well (cheap). read more

you have to know what to order. the BBQ is cooked over real hickory wood. The chopped bbq is trimmed before chopping so no chunks of fat. the ribs are slow cooked over the hickory and have great flavor but are not the fall off the bone style. The Brunswick stew is excellent. Most of the other offerings like broccoli or squash casserole are not special at all. they do offer a good breakfast which is quite popular. The food is good but there's one heavy set rude waitress with a strong accent who was not very nice. It never ceases to amaze me when ppl in the service industry act nasty. Do they think anyone is going to tip them handsomely when they don't do their job? I wonder when they're neither attractive nor nice are they really surprised when they get a $3 tip for a $50 meal? It's not that ppl don't tip well (as the stereotype goes) but some ppl are not going to tip well for poor service. I am not and I encouraged my husband to not do so. He's usually a very generous tipper. But not today. These dollars are too hard to come by to give them away unwarranted. read more

For those who miss the Old Hickory House restaurants that were once a favorite Atlanta BBQ chain, there's still one very original Old Hickory House left on Northlake Pkwy in Tucker. And the best news is, it is every bit as good as you remember. The star on the menu isn't actually the BBQ, the meat is certainly good but the star is all the other nostalgic Southern favorites - the sides. We went with the black-eyed peas, the collard greens, the okra and the squash casserole along with the mandatory sweet tea and served with amazingly perfect cornbread rolls. Nothing is as comforting as visiting a restaurant you've known for nearly 60 years that really hasn't changed and where everything tastes as good as you remembered. One extended family sitting near us had driven from a host of different Atlanta area suburbs to meet up in Tucker to celebrate a birthday and recapture some favorite memories. We eat at this place with my in-laws when we go to visit them. The food overall is fine; it's not my favorite bbq but it's ok. Their sauce is runny and I prefer a thick sauce. I do recommend the chopped sirloin steak. It is actually charbroiled and has a lovely fresh-off-the-smoker flavor. The brown gravy is tasty. They have a large variety of vegetables (or what passes for vegetables in the south, such as mac n cheese and cole slaw). The waitresses are old school southern and friendly; in all of our visits they have been attentive and helpful. The ambiance is dated, with faded prints on the wall and wicker seats in the chairs that make you question if they will hold you. Finally got to try Old Hickory House in Tucker, GA, after my friends Beth & Luis hyped it up. Got there right as they opened, and the parking lot was already semi-full. (Don't worry, there's extra parking on the side!) This place has strong old-school diner vibes, with great service, a massive menu, and tasty food at a great price. I tried: Barbecue Omelet with Beef: Loaded with beef and paired with thick, non-watery grits - perfection. Short Stack with Bacon: Pancakes were tasty, but I wish they had some crisp edges. The bacon was thick, crispy, and just right. Country Chicken & Gravy Biscuit Platter: The real MVP here! Perfectly battered chicken with flavorful gravy on a biscuit that's crunchy on the outside, buttery on the inside, and doesn't fall apart. All this for just $5! The atmosphere is lively with families, and there's a bar-style seating option if you're dining solo. Nikki, my server, was amazing and made sure my drink never hit the bottom. We took my aunt here the Sunday before Christmas. She loves veggies and they serve different delicious ones daily on the board. The BBQ pork I had was still great after all these years along with the best Brunswick stew in Ga. Inmho. Ambiance is casual with old pictures on the wall. There are tv's but no music so conversation is encouraged. Service was good even though the after church crowd had the place packed. Bottom line Old Hickory House never disappoints. read more

Wow! So glad we chose this place on the way home from a road trip this weekend! Some of the best BBQ I've ever had! We ordered online and the 30 min wait was worth it! The place was packed on a Sat. The chopped chicken was perfect in my opinion; not too sauced up so you can be healthy if you want. The thick BBQ on the side was so thick I wasn't sure if it was a side of baked beans at first! Collards were just what I expect from a side of southern greens but my favorite side was tbe potatoes salad! More potatoes than I normally get in each side and a great slightly sweet slightly tangy flavor! Large portion of chicken and not one but TWO delicious cornbread muffins ! This is an old established BBQ restaurant, the last remaining of a chain of restaurants in the Atlanta area. People are partial to the BBQ they grew up with here in the South and this is mine. Had the chopped pork plate, husband had a sliced pork sandwich and Brunswick stew. Delicious as always! Typical diners tend to be older and many of the staff have worked here for years. I'd been wanting to check this last remaining location of a once prolific chain out for years since rewatching Smokey and the Bandit, but never have had any reason to be over on the east side of Atlanta until recently. I couldn't wait to try it out. Not only is it a nearly identical example of the long gone Forest Park location used in the movie, but at nearly half a century old, it's a step back to a simpler time with BBQ the way it was before the word "craft" was introduced, classic dishes the way grandma made, plenty of sweet tea and peach cobbler. The staff is friendly and attentive. The food is just so classic and comforting. Ever since Texas bbq has exploded everywhere, I had forgotten what old south bbq was like. Finely chopped pork and ribs cooked over an open pit. And you won't need to take out a second mortgage to pay the bill either! I had to try the diablo sandwich, of course. It's not on the menu but you can just ask for it. Even with all the hot sauce, I could still taste that smokey pork. And their brunswick stew is the best you'll eat. Love all the old folks. I took a half mile walk from my hotel in Atlanta to Old Hickory House in Tucker, which was right at the edge of the city limits between Atlanta and Tucker. I knew I was getting close when the overwhelming aroma of delicious bbq was wafting in the air. This Tucker institution has been around for generations. You can tell it's a local favorite, and there are some longtime guests. I ordered the People Pleaser for some variety. It came with their succulent ribs and then sliced or chopped bbq pork and beef. I ordered it with sweet potato soufflé and corn muffins. There's an array of "fresh vegetable" choices aka the best sides on the planet. If you want to eat all the sides, there's a 4-vegetable plate too. As for service, you'll have the best experience if you're not in a rush. Take your time enjoying the vintage vibe. I went with a friend for lunch yesterday. I ordered the barbecued chicken sandwich, which I thought would certainly be adequate for lunch. The server was very pleasant. My sandwich was served on a plate, wrapped in a white paper bag, which I thought was an odd presentation. When i removed the sandwich I decided I would cut my sandwich and eat it with a fork so as not to spill oozing barbecue. I was a bit amazed to see that the layer of barbecued shredded chicken was quite thin, maybe 1/4 inch, that is all. I started thinking, for the $7.49 charge, I could have had a nice, thick, deluxe sandwich at Chick Fil A...I will definitely not be returning to Hickory House! So it's actually pretty good for what it is. I was craving ribs and decided to give Old Hickory House a try since the menu states the ribs are a customer favorite. The thing they do well, unfortunately, is sides. There was nothing hickory smoked about their ribs despite what they said on the menu. It's just flavorless meat with an obnoxiously sticky sauce. The Mac n cheese, collard greens, and fried green tomatoes, however, were surprisingly good! Our server was great... perfectly attentive, nice, and well-paced. No complaints there! read more

This is one of my favorite meals from this restaurant. I get it from time to time. The plate actually comes with garlic bread or 2 corn muffins. I always ask for the muffins with the butter to pour into them. The garlic bread is good also. I already ate my muffins and one piece of my country fried steak. I had the corn beef hash and it was very good. The French toast was not good it was more edges on the bread than bread .

I love HH for breakfast. Always get the plate w/ scrambled eggs & cheese, bacon, grits & biscuits. The size of their biscuits varies based on who's making them that day. Today was a good biscuit day. Nice & large. I've never really been a fan of their BBQ except that I do love their Brunswick stew. But based on other reviews, maybe I should give the ribs a try sometime. They're always packed on Saturday which is when we've visited recently. Servers are always nice & attentive. We'll return for sure. read more
