    Gnomes!
    Vivian H.

I have been trying to come here since I moved to Phoenix and the hours are a bit wonky, but finally I made it in this weekend and so glad I stopped by. I really like good German bread, German fitness bread and some other random German/Austrian food items. The store is quite big and I came in here around 2pm, about one hour before they closed and pretty much all of the fresh baked bread was gone, that's a good sign. I do like a really good rye bread, and they had a few small round loaves of coarse rye left, so I asked for one. The owner was also nice to slice it. There are also larger coarse rye loaves but since I hadn't been here before, I opted for the small one, in case I didn't like it. But, I will tell you, the coarse rye is excellent, I will be getting the bigger loaf next time I am here. I also found Manner wafers here and they carry lots of Haribo candies here (I'm not really a fan) too. They also have plenty of fresh baked items but all of their pretzels were gone, bummer, I'll be back next time for these. They also have streussel of all kinds, palm cookies, and other German treats. I don't have that much a sweet tooth so passed on all the pastries in their case. They also had two tables of 25% off items. They have imported fitness bread starting at $10, but I can find this over at Nature's Grocers for half the price. They also have random German T shirts, kitchen plates, etc. for sale. And, they have gnomes here for sale! I love gnomes and wanted to buy all of them haha! Gnomes are my favorite! Owner was really nice and even gave me a card as I told her sometimes I can't make it in early enough and she said to call her and she will put items aside for me. Really nice mom and pop shop of German goods and I truly hope they survive as they were complaining to other customers about the tariffs. Please support this place so we can continue to have really genuine German items here in Phoenix (heard the owners say they have German ancestry).

10/11/25: stopped in again to pick up their fantastic white bread but we could not leave with just that. This trip we bought their merengue (heavenly!), my go-to is the almond horn (damn, its good), and this time we tried a cream wafer (drool). Love this place!

When grew up Swiss German you have these things that are a staple. Old Heidelberg has those staples and is warm and welcoming! They even have Pfeffernüesse during the holiday.

Dark Rye - YES PLEASE. I can eat a whole loaf in 2 days I dont do carbs so when I do this is where i stock up on my worth it carbs. Besides the bread, anything with cheese in it is delish! Sure, you like fruit suff, apples, cherries, yes they have sweets with that too. Im just a sweet cheese girl! If you have your kiddo with you getting them one of the fun marzipans is a must!. The pretzel sticks are great i have to buy enough to have at home because usually 2 disappear during the car ride. So consider that when making your purchase. FYI they are great with soups and stews instead of bread or a roll. The gals are fantasticastic!! The only negative thing is the pricing, higher prices b/c its a small local business so their costs are higher. With that said I still spend the higher $$ to support this place. LOVE IT!!!

The perfect combination of meat, sauce, and cheesy goodness. The common denominator in both of the Sandi's was the incredibly fresh bread. It was crazy busy, and the service was excellent. This time also I was able to get some za'atar brioches and oh my goodness, I had these for breakfast this morning and they were delicious! I also like to get things here where I can't find elsewhere so I got some pomegranate juice, and some roasted chick pea snacks. They have quite a selection of spices here and I also picked up some roasted sesame. Lots of nuts to choose, and plenty of Middle Eastern/Arabic sweets and desserts available. They also sell hookah supplies here (not a fan - really bad for you). I hadn't been to this location in awhile and I miss that the inside restaurant is no longer open. I liked to get some of the ready made dips and sandwiches here. Bummer. Towards the back, lots of fresh sweets for sale including all kinds of baklava and there is also fresh olives for sale also! Fresh, halal meat available and also some meat that's been marinated and ready to cook. Fresh cheeses also available. I think I like the Mesa location better as I can get spinach and za'atar pies there and the fresh produce selection is better. And also you can get hummus, babaghanoush and other dips at the other location. Overall, I would say that these Baiz grocery stores are my happy place. It brings me back to a sweet and memorable time. It's worth a visit to check out all the unique items here and their pita and breads are fresh, tasty and well priced!

Somewhere along the journey I became determined to find the deli olives that were on sale... but could not for the life of me figure out which counter they belonged to. I also didn't want to interrupt anyone because the place was busy, so instead I just wandered around looking suspiciously like someone casing the olive situation. That said, I was shocked at how much I ended up with for how little I paid. Organic tahini, Biscoff cookies (obviously), a few pickled items, some produce... somehow my cart kept filling up while my total stayed reasonable. I also realized halfway through that I should have bought a kettle here instead of the one I recently purchased elsewhere. Regrets. I was definitely a busy day at the market with lots of interesting stuff, especially if you like foods a little outside the norm. It's a bit out of my way for regular trips, but I could see myself swinging back through on Wednesdays for the deals... and possibly finishing my olive investigation.

They house a restaurant that makes fresh Middle Eastern bread. Baklava bar that is insanely good, and their butcher bar is amazing including Hilal meats (research Hilal meat better than how our American meat is processed). Hilal is like Kosher in that it is a religious way they render their meats. Back to the review they added an olive bar and I'm a green Olive fanatic. Try the grilled green olives if you go and you'll get your life. Produce is fresh and reasonably priced. It services middle eastern and African cuisine ingredients primarily but it is a really nice market. Fluffy Grandma recommends.

Because they had dried seaweed but not kelp. Which I ended up purchasing since it was in the same family. The reason they got such a low star count is because, at one aisle smelled like fish juice. Very disgusting. The store was old and looked it, not very well kept. I would hesitate to purchase any frozen items here. At the other end, opposite of the produce, was a type of kitchen.
