Old Fashioned Fruit & Veg in Boise has three locations. Two in Boise, and one in Kuna. I have…read morevisited both Boise locations. Last year, I visited the location on Cloverdale Road. I thought it was nice. Last week, I visited the location on Broadway Avenue. It's far exceeded my expectations! The variety and quality of the fruit and vegetables was outstanding. It is the best produce stand I have seen in Idaho. I spent $35 on fresh produce, including morel mushrooms, local purple asparagus, plums, strawberries, Rainer cherries, and several apple varieties. I forgot to take a picture of the strawberries, which were the best I've tasted in ages. The last time I saw produce this outstanding was at one of my favorite businesses in Washington state. That business gets a lot of their fruits and vegetables from Charlie's Produce, as does Fred Meyer's. As it turns out, so does Old Fashioned Fruit & Veg. If you're a produce nerd like me, that will mean something to you. The employees were friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. Open daily from 9 AM to 7 PM. Highly Recommended!!! P.S. if you look at all of the photos, the first 12 of the 92 were posted by someone else. The remaining 80 photos + the ones below were taken by me on 6/10/23.

Don't take it out on the loyal and returning customers! Nancy B. was right, very grumpy employees.

So I felt a brick in the pit of my stomach the first time I strolled in to Stonehenge Produce and spied bottles of Faygo® Red Pop nudged in between the Sioux City Sarsaparilla and a small-batch root beer in their soda coolers. Folks, Faygo® is the reason for the downfall of society. Case in point? The Insane Clown Posse. But if one looks beyond the Faygo® - and the perpetual blanks on the shelves of Stonehenge's Shaker-style pie cabinet - there's a lot to like about Stonehenge Produce. And although this location on Overland pales in comparison to the original Stonehenge white barn on Fairview, the Overland Stonehenge does a fair job of providing locally- or regionally-sourced produce, dairy, eggs, meats, and treats, to residents of Boise's southeast side. Such services are of particular utility between Halloween and April, when the farmers markets are hibernating, leaving Stonehenge as one of the only places to procure farm-fresh eggs. And for those trying their hand at cheesemaking, Stonehenge carries Cloverleaf whole milk and Natural Farm Fresh raw milk. I also take out-of-towners to Stonehenge for local honey, spice blends, pastas, and jellies. My main issues with Stonehenge include the remarkably short shelf life of their produce (my bosc pears liquefied within two days of purchase), and their lack of fresh cuts of meat (all local meats at Stonehenge are frozen). I can overlook the Faygo®. But if ever a Detroit-style coney island opens up in Boise, consider my bags packed. *** CASH OR CHECK ONLY ***

I couldn't sleep last night so of course I decided to do some research on some local bakeries in…read moreour area. I am always down for something sweet! I have driven by this shop a million times but never got the chance to make it in. After checking out all their photos and goodies off their website, making my way in today was a must. The shop is very small and intimate. You are immediately greeted by all the goodies as soon as you walk in. Colorful macarons, the cutest cheesecakes and beautifully displayed scones and muffins. The display case is nice and bright, allowing you to be able to see the details and coloring of each macaron. The pretty piping on the cheesecake. The fun layers of the cakes. It was hard not to want one of each thing out of the case. It was our first visit for my daughter and I. As a new customer, you're trying to absorb everything about this store. You want to look at all your options! The gal that initially was going to help us pretty much just stood there and stared at us. Didn't really talk to us. Didn't ask if we had any questions. She had the most unpleasant look on her face. It honestly made me feel so unwanted and uncomfortable to be at the shop. I offered to let another customer go ahead of us so she wasn't just standing there waiting for us to order something. The second customer also needed some time. Finally a gentleman came in and she got him some coffee started. Another gal was working and she helped us. At that point, I was so turned off about getting anything but we were already there so we decided to grab a few things. My daughter and I decided to share a 6 pack of macarons. We snagged lemon, birthday cake, coffee, chocolate, creme brulee and cookies and cream as our flavor choices. She also got a red velvet cheesecake for us to share after dinner tonight. On our ride home, we broke that box of macarons open and had to try them all. The lemon was sweet and tangy, I love the lemon custard in the middle. Birthday cake reminds me of a pink frosted animal cookie. The chocolate was my favorite! Very chocolate forward and sweet. Coffee reminded me of a vanilla latte in cookie form. Cookies and cream was much like cookies and cream ice cream. More cream forward and less chocolate cookie. Creme brulee had sugar toasted on top which created a slight bitterness to the cookie but it was balanced with how sweet the cookie was. All 6 macarons were fabulous! I look forward to having the red velvet cheesecake after dinner tonight. I like that there are so many gluten free options at this bakery. I adore how petite and prettily decorated the pastries were. I appreciate that this joint is local as I love supporting local businesses. But, first impressions are so huge for me and my first impression of their customer service wasn't there for me. You can push out great products all you want but how you make someone feel during their purchase can make or break your business. As fantastic as my macarons were, all I can think about was how uncomfortable I was when I was just being stared at. Macarons and cheesecake can be purchased at a few joints in our valley. I'm happy I got to enjoy some goodies with my daughter but I'm going to go support another local business that will actually make me feel like a valued customer and not a bother.

We tried the pintxos of the day (3 for $10) - seafood and chorizo gratin, goat cheese and zucchini compote, and sardine bollo with lemon aioli; Basque meatballs with Sheepherder's bread, and braised lamb and potatoes. We also shared a frozen sangria which is a white wine slush with a splash of red wine float. All the food is amazing - the Basque meatballs is a bit on the saltier side but the Sheepherder's bread is so crispy and buttery! Among the pintxos, I loved the seafood and chorizo gratin the most, but all are delicious. The braised lamb and potatoes are good - the lamb is juicy while the potatoes were flavorful and slightly crispy. Service is good for an order at the counter style establishment - servers still walk around and check up on customers, even though the rest of the experience (filling water, etc) is more self-serve.

OK, I will say I just moved here. Just moved from a city with a great Farmers Market, amazing I…read moremight say so I am a little bias...but this is not really a bias things, more a question. I have spent the last 25+ years going to the Minneapolis Farmers Market every weekend from April to Sept/Oct. Even on weeks that I wasn't going to be home I would come down for the people, the sounds, the smells, the fresh produce. I have this thing in my mind about Farmers Markets and supporting local businesses, local growers and buying good clean healthy products from people who do this year after year! Watching young and old, rich and poor come down to buy locally grown, seasonal products! As a trained Chef, lover of food, lover of people and crowds everything about a farmers market hits for me! I have been to a lot of famers markets in a lot of Cities and States as well, all along those lines for the most part... Now the Boise Farmers Market is very nice, lots of great vendors, good food trucks, Awesome Bagels (shout out to @Good Time Bagels) but the pricing for produce is quite honestly bizarre ! I have been here only 3 months but I find Boise overall to have a much lower cost of living to what I am used to. Restaurants, stores, coffee, alcohol...the little things I enjoy in life are much less expensive...except veggies at the Farmers Market! I would routinely pick up fresh lettuce of various types at the market for $1-2 dollars a head...Boise $7-10??? $7 dollars for a bag of lettuce, are you kidding me, $10..WTF??? $3 for a very, very small bunch of carrots...something that I would expect for $1...This is NOT the markets you would pick up your weekly need of veggies at, you couldn't afford to. $11 for a loaf of fresh bread, really...that's like double what I would pay at Whole Foods (whole paycheck as it's known). Now I get getting a fair price for your product, for your work, what you do...but it's a head of lettuce, it's a carrot...are the costs of growing that much more? That is a general question. MN is a very high tax State, especially compared to ID...not why I moved here at all, love the Boise vibe from the first time I came for work! I very much love this city, the people are so nice but the farmer market both confuses me and disappointed me all at the same time! I will come down ever weekend, I will enjoy the people, the smells, the food and coffee...especially the Bagels...but I will NOT buy lettuce which is such a shame! If you have ever eaten freshly grown lettuce compared to the stuff you get from the grocery store, everything about it is so much better. It actually has flavor, a crunch, taste...but not for $8 (using an average) that's just stupid! Where do the chefs buy fresh produce? Where do the families who want to buy local, want a healthier life for their families...where do they shop? Curious!

Every one of the vendors we spoke with was friendly and the myriad of products available was great. We spit a breakfast sandwich (olive tapenade, sausage, egg, and more!) as well as a mango smoothie (tart) from one vendor, before walking through the market. We ended up buying a bottle of wine and a jar of jam for our journey home. Minus 1 star because it was a) a bit expensive and b) full of dogs even though signs say no dogs (I like them, but not everyone does - for those who don't, it would be good to enforce or at least be aware, it's not a dog free market).
