I got my tattoo done with Natasha Tsozik after admiring some of her work on instagram/ her blog. I had such a great experience from start to finish and can't recommend her enough. I had some pretty abstract ideas for what I wanted my tattoo to look like, what meanings I wanted to make sure to include in the design, etc. We met over zoom to discuss, then Natasha created the most beautiful floral armband for me, sent me the initial sketch via email, and listened to all my feedback before sending me the final design. I also told her my max budget, and she made sure to keep the design doable given the amount of time it would take. The tattoo parlor itself was extremely clean and COVID- cautious. Natasha was friendly and warm, instantly put me at ease, and so lovely to chat to. I had a last minute change that I wanted to make after she started tattooing me and felt nervous to bring it up. She was so sweet, said it was no problem, reassured me that speaking up was good, and easily adjusted things. I'm so so happy with how my tattoo turned out and will definitely be returning to get a tattoo done by Natasha. My piece with Old Crow wrapped up a little while ago and I'm getting around to writing a review now. :) I initially came in with an unfinished back piece my friend had started for free. It wasn't going well (you get what you pay for) so I came to Old Crow looking for someone to finish up what we started, hoping to keep it in the same vein of what I had initially imagined this piece to be. I got connected with Stewart who was very frank with me that the design and craftsmanship of what I had was very poor, and what I initially wanted with my design could not be executed to look good. Cue sad trombone music. :/ He told me anything he added would make it better by default, but his recommendation was to go with a cover up. After several free consultations (very generous!), we came up with an entirely new piece, and figured out a design that was the right size to be a complete back piece and effective cover up. Stewart was incredibly patient, creative, and helpful in this process when I really had minimal ideas to offer him as he created something new. We arrived on a peregrine falcon sitting on a branch - a completely different visual from what my friend started, but something that could actually be executed as a good looking tattoo (unlike the original idea) and still kept some of the same emotions/sentiments of what I wanted to capture. Over the next almost two years, Stewart was awesome as we put this together session by session, basically going at my own pace based on what my budget could bear. He was so friendly, authentic, and chill throughout the whole process, and fine with my intermittent availability for sessions. The rest of the artists and staff were also so nice and remembered me and said hi when I would come in, and chat while Stewart was working. A real friendly and genuine vibe in the shop. Most importantly, the piece looks awesome! The cover up is not 100% done, as some more shading can be filled in on the feathers, but it looks great at is; not unfinished looking at all. Stewart has re-located from Oakland, and I have as well, which is mainly why the piece is on indefinite pause, but I'm still so happy with our finished product. If it gets filled in eventually, great - if not, still great. Never thought I'd end up with a full back/butt tattoo but here we are and it looks badass. I'm very happy with my whole experience and when I find myself back in the Bay, I will definitely come back to Old Crow for future tattooing endeavors. read more

I got a wrist/lower-forearm tattoo from Matt Leibowitz at Old Crow. It was an awesome experience. During our consult, we chatted, I showed him pictures, and he understood what I wanted; then he did a quick, rough sketch that we fined tuned a little. Wish I could say I had a great experience at this establishment. I schedule an appointment for March 12, 13 with Polina. I arrive at 11am, Before I filled out the consent form I was asked if I had a vaccine card or a negative covid test. I had neither as Polina never let me know ahead of time. Although rare, you can develop myocarditis from the covid vaccine. Which is why I've chosen not to take it as I had it when I was much younger but thankfully made a full recovery. Anyways her excuse was that she sent me the Location of the tattoo shop and that I should of gone on their website. Which I don't agree with as you can't expect everyone to visit the website, especially since I found her through Instagram and not the website. Her telling me the name of the tattoo shop is simply telling me the location. I even have text messages of me asking her two days before the appointment about the "necessary prep" so that I can have everything ready. She didn't mention anything about covid. All she told me was "Please no alcohol tonight, no coffee tomorrow". So I end up doing a rapid test which comes out negative and I have a picture to prove it. I then do the consent form which I have a copy of. Next Polina and I are talking about the tattoo itself, she is working on an iPad and coming up with really good ideas. Then for some reason she walks back to the front desk while nodding her head. Which made me think something was off. She then comes back and tells me she's not doing the tattoo. When I ask her why, she says something along the lines of "what I said about the covid situation was rude and unfair that I said it was her fault and that it was really bugging her". She also mentioned that she wasn't feeling a "good connection". I proceeded to let her know I didn't mean it in a rude was nor was I trying to offend her. I never even said it was her fault. I was simply explaining the reasoning on why I didn't show up with a negative covid test. I even explained to her that I have some fault since I didn't directly ask about any covid stuff. She still insists that she has chosen to not do the tattoo. I was confused as I can't understand why someone would be so offended. I apologized again and told her that I was sorry if she felt offended and told her to have a nice day anyway. I'm still disappointed as this was going to be my first tattoo. Not to mention I don't live in Oakland and had to drive nearly 2 hours to get there. The appointment was made 3 months ago and I also missed two days of work since she told me it was a two day project. So I actually lost money. I did receive my deposit back but nonetheless what happened was highly unprofessional and unacceptable. read more

It's hard to know if my issues are with the tattoo shop directly, or Laura Taylor, the tattoo artist. Either way, my experience has been awful. I had a consult in Oct 2021, paid a deposit and scheduled 3 appointments in March, April and May. My first appointment had the location and time change on me three times and ended up being at a different shop. Then Old Crow reached out to me to let me know there's been a scheduling error and they cannot take me on my scheduled dates. For a month and a half I have been emailing them over and over trying to get my appointment rescheduled. Half the time my emails are ignored and I have to keep following up. They've overscheduled themselves so much that they cannot fit me in until October 2022, but will not actually schedule that far out in advance. Finally after a month and a half of getting nowhere I got so frustrated I asked for my deposit back. Two people, one of whom was the tattoo artist herself, agreed to give me the deposit back after lecturing me about how disappointed they are that I'm making this decision, without any acknowledgement of my frustration or their failure. Several days later I get another note that says "we regret to inform you we will not give you your deposit back because you signed a paper stating deposits are non-refundable". I paid my deposit in good faith that the shop and the artist would uphold their end of the contract. I do not recommend working with Laura, unless you add something to the contract that binds her to keeping appointments with you. The entire situation is extremely unprofessional and such a let down after the great tattoo experiences I've had elsewhere and with other artists. read more

Unfortunately, I never got in to see my artist. Everything was fine at the consultation. I paid the deposit, put a date on the schedule. I walked into the shop on my tattoo date and they got the date wrong by a MONTH. For me, it's more than just an inconvenience. I had to take time off of work because I have a physical job and can't work with fresh ink. He offered a discount for the mistake, but the lack of professionalism put me off too much. I emailed him hoping to get partial return on the deposit, but he never even responded. Super disappointing. UPDATE: The manager messaged me and told me they would get my deposit back if I named the artist and gave my contact info. This place is super nice. The waiting area is very inviting with snacks, water, and tea assortments. It is very clean, and everyone there was compliant with the current guidelines. Natasha's process and communication were completely clear throughout. She was super personable and helpful during our Zoom consultation, and did a great job listening and transforming my ideas into a sketch before I went into the shop. My piece included some dense/intricate parts, so it took about 7 hours overall on the day (including setup, breaks, etc. -- maybe 5 hours actively tattooing?), and she was great throughout the whole day. I arrived the day of the appointment to the studio and it was super nice and clean. Lots of safety procedures - they had me go wash thoroughly and then fill out a detailed questionnaire on an iPad. Natasha explained everything as we went and made sure I was completely satisfied with the size and placement before anything permanent happened. The tattoo itself didn't hurt at all. It was small but I always imagined it would hurt some. The aftercare was easy and everything was perfect. It feels like this tattoo is a natural part of me. So this is in regard to my experience with Bryan Proteau for what I consider my first official tattoo. I came in for a quick consultation and ended up just generally explaining roughly what I wanted. He was really nice and professional and if I'm being honest, I was kind of scared he didn't understand exactly what I wanted because he seemed very nonchalant about it and didn't have any questions. I did email him about color work to see if he was able to do it and he honestly told me that wasn't his forte which I totally understood and appreciated the honesty. So I ended up just asking if it was possible to add a small dot of color on the eyes of the raven and he was more than happy to help with that. Fast forward to the reveal of the rough sketch of the tattoo and it was like a truck hit me. I fell absolutely in love and was so speechless. My boyfriend was there at the time and had to hug me to keep me from crying my eyes out. The tattoos significance meant a lot to me and he was able to perfectly draw out what I wanted and even exceed what I dreamed about. It turned out absolutely beautiful and I got so many compliments on the detail from friends and family too.
