I was looking for an artist that could create me a original art piece based off some inspiration pictures and a vague description and she brought my idea to life and delivered amazingly. She is the most talented artist I have ever worked with and am currently working on a another custom piece with her. She has a light touch and delivers the finest most clean lines. She is such a kind and generous person and artist and makes a long 6 hour session seem like 2. She made sure I was comfortable and hydrated routinely and was very accommodating to my schedule. I was given an appointment at 2 o'clock. When I went to the place, I was welcomed by the manager who was really nice. He asked me if I had food and I told him I had snacks, he wanted to make sure that I am ready for my tattoo. He offered me a bar, which I really appreciate it was more than a human interaction, then a business. I would not recommend A... as an artist, because she was very unprofessional. When I reached manager told me to wait as A.... was on lunch break . I have no problem with waiting. What I have a problem with is when she came back she told me to give her some time, she's gonna prepare the machine and seat for me . After 10 minutes she changed her mind n told me she needs one day preparing my tattoo. What I found very unprofessional why I was not given an opportunity to send tattoos in advance I was told walk-ins are welcomed, but I was given appointment. I went all the way to Berkeley took 45 minute drive just to hear that I cannot be seen that day. I think she is unprofessional while she was talking to me, she stopped the conversation in the middle and started talking to her next customer and totally ignored me. She kept apologizing to them that she double booked. No eye contact to me or any apology to me. I am so glad I have such a bad experience at this place because after that I yelped while sitting out side the store. I was heart because I was so looking forward to get this tattoo in the memory of my father. I told myself I'm not going home until i get my tattoo today . I looked at Philthy Clean, Tattoo Place on Yelp that had higher reviews and I am so happy with the service. Yes I waited three hours, very clean beautiful place. I was helped by Miguel whole who finished my tattoo same day from 5pm to 12 AM. His work is so beautiful that I went for another tattoo next day . He missed his dinner so he can finish my tattoo. Totally different vibe . I appreciated his sacrifice and I ordered dinner for him and myself at the location . He understood my need and he help me and I really appreciate him and I highly recommend that place to everybody. Natasha is the most AMAZING TATTOOIST I KNOW. I'll start off with saying I travelled from Sacramento so I was a bit nervous getting a tattoo. She spoke to me the entire time she was applying the stencil and she was kinda hyping me up too. She was super understanding of my situation and accommodated me. The session took about 5-6 hours if I remember correctly. She often took breaks but I would too if it was that tedious. Afterward, she offered to finish my tattoo (this coming May) and she was so happy about it! I think she was super sweet and I definitely will go back to her for more tattoos in the future. Got a small tattoo from Sophia during the latest fundraiser on 10/27. Unlike the other artists, Sophia uses the stick n poke method rather than the tattoo gun. It's definitely a different experience but it was 100% positive. The process is slower but I personally thought it was much less painful. She did the poison bottle and droplets in about 45 minutes. So far, it looks like it's healing faster with almost no bruising or scabbing. 5/5 would recommend. I'm definitely going back for more. Also, special shout out to Regina. She let me hang while my friend got tatted and made sure I was comfortable while I waited for my session with Sophia. read more

I basically live here now. (Seriously, I've been in here so often that we all joke that I'm the new shop dog.) But in all honesty, I love pretty much everyone who works here. I've gotten tattooed by Natasha, Pio and Rex-- all have the gentlest hands in the west and I honestly am super stoked and am glad to call them my artists as well as friends and comrades. Pio (@pio.poke), as always, is wonderful to work with. She did my first tattoo /ever/ and I'll be forever grateful for that. She was so collaborative, and communicative. She is very flexible, and I'm very appreciative of her time and effort that she put into designing the tattoo, as well as executing it in the handpoked style. I'll always treasure the two tattoos that she did for me! (Also she is the gentlest soul and I'm sorry I fell asleep on you while I was being tattooed. I promise I didn't pass out.) Natasha (@nhannascott) specialises in single needle, which can be hard to pull off but her work has stayed on my body and honestly looks wonderful. I got it over 10 months ago at this point and it hasn't needed touching up at all (at least to my knowledge.) Her books are always booked at this point and she's up for best East Bay Tattoo. If you can book with her, please do! She's so fun to talk to and I love working with her. Rex (@rex_ttt) did my back piece and was collaborative and gentle with me the whole time. It was a large piece, therefore, broken up into 4 sessions-- with more to come as I'm adding on more! Rex's books are closed now, but if you get a chance to book with them, please do! They are the most chill, and I always trust their vision and execution, so I was very open to having them put whatever the hell they wanted on my body (but really-- florals... FLORALS!) We even thought about using colour on my body, but decided it was best to keep it in blackwork. Not that I'm complaining! The level of detail Rex has painstakingly placed into my back has been worth the way I feel when I can spot it in the mirror or have a glance at it. It's a work of art that I literally carry with me everywhere, and I'm grateful for how comfortable they made me feel during the entire process. Veteran / Novice Ink-Lovers Welcome. I often hear many artists say it takes two people to create a magnificent tattoo, this wasn't the case for me (It was all Tanya). I first started exchanging emails with Tanya to schedule in my consultation appointment and to explain my idea, and by the time we met for consultation, she had already gathered some references and had even prepared some rough sketches for me. I became instantly happy after glancing at her sketches and loved the direction that she went into. Tanya's raw talent instantly blew my mind, and was able to translate my vision into reality. She is truly a perceptive and gifted artist. "She nailed it!" -- I thought to myself. I then ceased my search for other artists and scheduled in my sessions right then and there. I had a rough idea of what I wanted at first, but couldn't quite fully imagine a finished design by myself. But after meeting again for our first session, Tanya's final design helped me envision the missing pieces to the puzzle, and I went for it. (Don't forget the $100 security deposit & your references) The MES studio is a fun place hang out at, everyone is extraordinarily friendly, truly an artist's atelier; where easels are laying everywhere, smooth music playing throughout, all filled with remarkable paintings of their personal art collection on display across the walls. The best part was their cute dog Maggie; who's just adorable and just chills about the studio often asking for free massages. Tanya on the other hand is a bona-fide sweetheart, a "kill-em' with kindness" kind of girl, a super-chill artistic genius. But most of all, she's tremendously understanding and she really takes in your feedback into her re-designs. Not to mention that she's a rockin' babe! I had plans to move out of the country for work, so I really wanted to get a piece done before my move. As my idea required at least 3 sessions, initially no one was willing to pencil me in within a 1 month time frame. But Tanya took me in, and happily opened her schedule up for me. She was able to finish my project in just Two, 3-hour sessions. (1st session: line work, 2nd sessions: shading) On my left arm, Tanya's virtuoso as a serious tattoo artist is on full display and I'm proud to exhibit her work, proving to me that her craftsmanship had steered my project to the direction I was looking for. I am exceptionally happy and truly grateful to have gone through this experience with her and I will be definitely coming back again to work on a future project. Thanks again Tanya! read more

I've had my third tattoo in mind since last year and I looked into artists both in east bay and south bay. I'm very type A and I like doing my research and having a plan way in advance, since tattoos are permanent! I liked Regina after reviewing dozens and dozens of portfolios on social media and various tattoo shops' websites. I scheduled an initial consultation about a month ago. Everything went smoothly and I thought we were on the same page. I was super excited and even asked my friend, an artist, to doodle some simple designs for me for reference. Over the course of the month, I must have sent twenty-some photos of ideas to Regina, which took more time to find. At the end of the consultation, we made an appointment for 5pm today. At 3pm, Regina sent me an email letting me know she was running late and asked if I could show up at 6pm instead. I showed up a little after 5:30, thinking maybe she could take me earlier. Instead, she asked to reschedule to 7pm tomorrow. Then, she mentioned that she usually tells her clients not to schedule anything after, which she failed to mention earlier. Finally, at 10pm tonight, I see a full refund of my $100 deposit in Paypal, with a message from Regina that she will no longer do my tattoo. While I appreciate the refund, I hope Regina and other artists will take better care of their schedules. True art is not to be rushed, and I feel like Regina carelessly scheduled me without considering how long it might take for my piece and others' pieces. Will definitely never come back here. Wasted months of time doing research and getting excited and waiting and finally being disappointed. If you have months of time to kill, then by all means, this is the right place. read more

Fresh ink from Tanya W is the must have summer accessory of 2012! All my friends had it and I knew I had to too. I'd seen designs that ranged from objects to portraits of wildlife and went to Tanya with an idea that combined both those things with a side of pork. She worked with me on a custom design that included tons of feedback from me, vision from her and resulted in exactly the tattoo i'd wanted. Her touch was as light as a feather (or a ghost?) during the tattoo which is saying something given that it was done in a pretty sensitive spot. Now, almost a month out my tattoo has healed perfectly and I continue to be told by many people that it's one of their favorite tattoos they've seen. Just like all of my friends get their hair cut by Dionne at Pretty Pretty Collective, apparently all of my closest mates get their tattoos done by Suzanne at Modern Electric. I'm madly in love with the horse/EKG piece she Sharpie-ed directly onto my inner arm, she inked beautiful fine art-y redwood trees onto my husband's arm and did a dumbfoundingly intricate pointillism floral tattoo on a friend's shoulder. The lady is no one-trick pony when it comes to styles. Added bonus: she has an incredibly light hand. This is my second tattoo and I was searching for someone to counterbalance the production line-type experience I had at Everlasting with my first one. I found it. I've been going to Tanya since she really started to settle into tattooing and I haven't looked back. She has done my entire right sleeve, a portrait of my dog, a feather on my head and recently started covering up a half sleeve I've had for 15 years. I fully trust her technique and artistic ability. The shop itself is a beautiful inviting space with hard wood floors, artwork lining the walls, and lots of windows that fill the shop with sunlight. These ladies do high-end custom pieces (no picking a number off the wall here) and put in the time to create really inspiring pieces with clean lines. The artists themselves each take care with their consults and are flexible with starting over from scratch, doing as many placements as necessary to get the piece just right and putting in as much time as it takes to create something even better than what you dreamt up in your pretty little head. I brought Tanya an idea inspired by the likes of Mark Ryden, Lori Earley, and Kelly Vivanco and she created something with hints of each but better than what I could have ever imagined on my own. It's in a great location, has amazing local artwork, and they collectively host raffles or flash days where proceeds go to support various organizations (i.e. ACLU, planned parenthood, etc.)! I just got a tattoo two weeks ago from Tanya. I told her a brief description of what I wanted and she drew out a custom design for me. I was a little hesitant to explain that it wasn't exactly what I wanted but it is my body so I went for it. I described the emotional side of what I was looking for and gave her more physical descriptive detail. I came in the next day for my tattoo to see the most beautiful design perfect for me. We met for a consultation a few weeks ago, and she drew up exactly what I wanted based on a very small example of the piece I was trying to get.
