I came in for a rework on my first and only tattoo - a Tool tattoo I got in LA from a guy who had shaky line work. I was down on my luck until I met with Cameron. He told me he could fix it, and me being the pessimist I am, thought it may be too good to be true. But low and behold, he did. And not only did he fix it, he made it 10x better. His line work is fantastic and he filled in areas where there was blowout with ink that really matched my skin color. It healed so well and I'm actually happy when looking at it now. The design looks so much better with thicker lines, too. I'm planning on working with him some more - I got some ideas cooking. Also, the studio is very clean and all the artists are nice. I sent in a request via their online regarding what I wanted done and to see if they could refer me to an artist who would be best. I received a quick response and was setup with George. I scheduled an appointment quickly with George to meet in person to see the artwork I wanted, review any alterations, discuss size, and pricing. When reviewing the schedule he was pretty booked but he had availability the following day (Saturday night) and the following week. Estimated time was around 3 hours. I booked for the next day. Upon arrival George had be fill out the waivers and review the stensile and sizing everything was great. It was only my second tattoo but I felt at ease as I knew George had plenty of experience. We did go a bit longer than estimated but nothing felt rushed. George was focused and thoughtful given the meaning behind the artwork. I think I will be visiting George again for my next piece. Cameron Miller is my go to artist. I've had three tattoos done by him and this is only the beginning. I get one tattoo a year and I look forward to coming to the shop every time. It's clean, artists are friendly and it's spacious. I've watched Cameron and the other artists sanitize, clean and everything else in between to make sure their tools, work station and selves are clean before and after every appointment. The consultations I've had with him never last more than 15 minutes and we always schedule the tattoo appointment immediately after just so I can make it on his calendar. He is light handed, considerate (always asks how I'm doing during the tattoo) and can meet your expectations on all designs you have in mind. Small talk is cool, and it's also very enjoyable listening to the shop talk. I would definitely let Cameron have artistic freedom on a tattoo because I trust his judgement and his craft. I loved his idea of the flowers for a background. An hour and a half later, I walked out with an amazing tattoo I had been thinking about getting for a very long time. I've had amazing experiences with Alex and Tony, and I can't recommend them enough. They're both super chill dudes and talented artists. I've gotten tattooed a total of 4 times between the two of them and I couldn't be happier with their work. Three of them are designs that they came up with on their own (flash), and one is a custom. Regardless of whether you get flash or get a custom, they're easy to work with and make the whole process comfortable. You know you're getting top-shelf work if you go to War Horse, they're one of the most reputable shops around. As my epic road trip was winding down, I wanted to get a tattoo to remember this trip by. I searched all over Berkeley and decided to come by War Horse and we couldn't have made a better choice. Without calling or making appointments, I didn't expect to be able to get anything done at such late notice. I stopped in anyway at almost closing time and met with Cameron and Paul who are both totally AMAZING and awesome to stay late and work with what I wanted. They are both super nice, hilarious, patient and talented. War Horse, as everyone here has already mentioned, is extremely clean, comfortable, and very spacious. You can definitely tell they have put a lot of effort in every little detail with this place. Great place and great people. They were super helpful at helping my partner and I set up and find the best artist for our matching tattoo of our husky. Cameron was phenomenal and so talented! It turned out beautifully and looks just like our little Luna. He was able to completely represent her liking and the details are so realistic to all of her features. My partner's is larger because of where he placed his tattoo and mine is smaller on my forearm but they both turned out great! It was the perfect type of style for me. Although, I was slightly confused about our communication as it was difficult to reach George. We connected mostly through emails, and calling through the landline to the shop - which did place a bit of barrier of how deep our conversation could get. I didn't exactly know if he know what I know. That was until he stenciled out the sketch and showed it to me. All my pessimism dissolved away as I admired his prowess in understanding my vague words and bringing them to fruition. I lost my initial sketch, but it was something that looked like this, with clouds, lightnings, and roses. http://moziru.com/images/mcescher-clipart-sun-8.jpg I said, "Please make it look more Epic than this." And he did. Actually I was so impressed that I decided to add in an extra Koi tattoo later on, knowing that he'll come up with something amazing. I started my sessions this year in March and been coming in 7 times. I pretty much let him draw whatever he wanted each time, mostly looking for his guidance on how to make this work out because he is the expert. Not I. It seemed sort of surreal decision because it's something permanent. I'm glad I took the leap though. He even suggested for a final re-touch session. At that point, I was already traumatized and putting up mental resistance of going to that last session. But I'm glad he did offer this idea, as the final work was amazing. He was the most pleasant guy to work with. I don't know if I'll find another artist that can offer this level of understanding of what I wanted, and honest professionalism. May come back again after some break. P.s. -- I read some of the negative reviews here. I guess if you haven't gotten tattoo before, it is not uncommon that you need to pay an initial deposit in order to begin talking about the tattoo ideas with your artist. In contrast, I could understand that if tattoo artists just give you their sketch, you would be able to take their idea and get tattooed in another shop. The tattoo sketch is part of the deal. Unfortunately, this seems to be how it works until I finally decided at Warhorse Tattoo. An advice I would give is to look through your potential artists' portfolios conscientiously before deciding which person you'd sacrifice your skin to. I'd pay as much as it is needed because in the end, tattoos stays on you forever and you wouldn't want a terrible artist that draws something you don't want. I had a close friend pass away a couple weeks ago and as tribute to her I decided to get a small boxing glove tattooed on my arm. I must have spent a couple hours looking through images online and debating on how I wanted the glove to look. I wanted simple and black was all I knew but nothing online was really catching my eye. Came in after looking at a few places around my hometown, Oakland. I'm glad that this is where I stopped looking. George's artwork and skills aligned with my goals and decided to work with him. He's very talented and helpful. I started off giving him an idea to work with. From there it was very short email conversations. He told me to give him any samples I liked online, and examples of what I definitely hated. Even though our conversations were short and brief, George still impressed me with his artwork. He made scheduling very easy and coming back for multiple sessions was also smooth. I'm glad I didn't have to wait long to have him complete the work because it took 4 sessions. I think his price was fair and worth it for his skill in tattooing. There were cheaper options out there but I dont believe the ones I checked out were on his level. This place is definitely worth checking out! A lot of variations of tattoo styles here. My boyfriend did a walk in today and been accompanied by Dana. I'll say excellent service! 4.5 stars, easy. Cleanest, gorgeous tat shop. It's more like an art gallery than an ink joint. Paul Bosch is the man-- I love his black/grayscale work, and his style matched what I wanted my black swan to look like. I was going for a traditional style with feather detail and just a pop of color and I definitely wasn't disappointed. The artists are all so nice-- no nonsense and you could tell they all work well together. $100 deposit that applies to your last session. Mine took two sessions and takes up pretty much my bicep and top of the shoulder. Spent about $800 total for custom work, including tip. Pricier than other shops, but you get what you pay for and it'll be on you for-evuuurrr (sandlot voice). With that being said, I took 1/2 a star off for not accepting debit/credit cards. It's a bitch to be carrying all that cash or getting cash from the 7-11 across the street. I hate carrying more than $40 at one time. I could see it becoming a bigger deterrent for me if I took public transportation. 2 hour street parking, both metered and unmetered options. I haven't gotten any smaller tats or flashes here, but I'm assuming the hourly rate/ price would be different. Check them out! read more
