I meet a girlfriend once a month in Charlotte for a walk or workout class and lunch together. This time we chose Okra yoga studio and booked our morning class online about a week ahead. Since we arrived a smidge early due to our built-in traffic cushion and smooth traffic for both of us, we asked about moving to the class that started 15 minutes before the one we booked. The sweet gal at the desk checked the class enrollment and said we could move - so YAY. It was a pretty studio and the instructor was so soothing. Making us aware of hands-on corrections and telling us how to signal if we weren't into it. The music was chill. My friend and I had the best 75 minute flow and were even guided to a brunch spot within walking distance! The parking situation is explained well online and I'm glad we had a moment to figure it out - at 9am it really wasn't an issue but I could see how it may get a bit busy/crowded and people could get flustered. I would definitely go back to Okra since my friend and I tend to plan ahead for indoor workouts in the winter to avoid weather issues. Easy to book, easy to find, loved our class. Four thumbs up from me and the bestie. (Total thumbs - not four each!) read more

I went into their storefront rather than their yoga but they had such a cool collection of crystals, stones, sage, incense, and other earthly goods. It was really cool to browse through and explore their selections even if CBD and hemp products. The employee working was an incredibly sweet lady who made my day! She was such a kind soul and so eager to welcome us in and tell us more about the store itself but also her experience in Charlotte, recommending more places for us to check out. I loved it here so much I almost applied for a job on the spot! Highly recommend checking out read more

This was my first visit to Okra - and, wow! I enjoyed the entire experience. This review is based on a 75 minute Vinyāsa Yoga class with Sara. Let me start by saying, this was my first Yoga class in more 4 years. On to the fun stuff! Walking in and the smell of pure calm, peace and joy welcome you. I arrived a few minutes before my class and I was super nervous that I was going to be "that person" and be late. The individual at the front desk was so reassuring and told me I arrived just on time. I completed the new student paperwork and rented/borrowed mat from Okra - again I haven't been to a class in a long time! They also provided a semi private area for personal belongings. Sara, the instructor, was phenomenal! There were people of all levels in the class. From first-timers to advanced students, Sara was able to adapt based on the individual. Okra is located in Plaza Midwood. There's free street parking available (be sure to read the sign and reserve park where requested). I'm so excited to return and try more classes! Until then - Namaste! read more

Best yoga studio in Charlotte. I've been practicing there for years now. No mirrors or people competing with one another on their poses.

First time visitor, lifetime dedication lol. I came to Okra for my post-Ian Decompress. (I'm with a Swiftwater Rescue Organization, and after we work a Rescue/Recovery or storm, we take a few days to decompress + process what we've been thru). It was about a week later than we normally do it, so let's just say I was wound a bit more tight than usual. Unfortunately I didn't get the name of the woman at the front desk, I came in like a wrecking ball lol and immediately put me at ease. My 75min massage was with Jen Strausberg (hopefully I spelled that correctly) and she was WONDERFUL. It had been almost 3yrs since I've had a massage, prior I used to get them every month for YEARS. I will definitely be back! I'm booking the Energy Atunement(?) In the future too. read more

Best value in town! They do great specials on their Listserv. I just got a THREE HOUR a massage yesterday that was very relaxing ($120). They have a great mix of chill or rigorous yoga (Danielle is great!). Everyone is always kind when you walk in. read more

My sister and I got to a gentle yoga class a little late, or so we thought, but when we arrived, we realized that it started earlier than we realized (Oops!) Even though we decided not to go into the class, the woman at the front desk was kind, welcoming, and down to earth. I bought a bunch of crystals and thoroughly enjoyed the chill atmosphere. I would definitely come back, just off this experience. Plus, my sister, who teaches yoga, says this is a good studio, so I'll take her word for it read more

First time at Okra Yoga! I used class pass credits to join the all levels vinyasa with Sara, and it was lovely. As soon as I walked in I was warmly welcomed by the receptionist and Sara. It immediately made me feel comfortable and ready to flow. The studio was an intimate space with ambient music, extra supplies (blocks, blankets, etc), and soft lighting. I really appreciated Sara's attentiveness and flow. She gave a lot of great pointers to improve my practice. The studio is a sweet and quaint historic home full of ambient vibes. Highly recommend if anyone is looking for a studio in the Plaza Midwood area. read more

I've been doing yoga almost 5 years, so sometimes I'm a bit picky about where I practice. I've gone to studios all around charlotte, and this is hands down my favorite studio to practice. Okra just keeps things simple! You go, and you get yoga. There are a variety of classes and teachers. They make it easy to book through the Mind Body app. Prices are fair in my opinion. Tons of props to use. They're never too pushy about memberships and also never too pushy about your practice. They give different modifications and options for all levels and encourage you to listen to your body. They offer new members their first month unlimited for $30, so I definitely think it's worth checking out. Highly recommend!! read more

A wonderful yoga studio with a great mix of classes, love the name Okra too. I enjoy Mindy's Saturday morning Gentle Flow class, she is an excellent teacher. read more

Honestly tonight was the worst experience I've had here. The girl at reception was having a conversation with someone and did not budge to end her conversation to assist us. Today was my friends first time at this location and she too had a horrible experience. The girl at reception was awful and the instructor "Daniel" I believe was extremely fast and you could not get a good feel of the session for how fast she was going. We will not be returning here and it's crazy how this was my first horrible experience here and I am turned all the way off. read more

I only get my body massages here so this might be a biased review. I love the location. The parking doesn't sucks because they have parking in the back. This place always smells wonderful and the staff is super sweet. I've never had a bad massage here. I overall enjoy my at Okra! read more

I had the most amazing massage with Jen Strassberg a couple of weeks ago. The scheduling for my massage was incorrect and when I arrived my masseuse was not there. I was 34 weeks pregnant and broke down crying in the lobby because I was so disappointed. Jen finished with a client, saw me in the lobby, and offered to stay late to give me a massage (the day before Christmas eve I might add!) Not only was the gesture extremely generous and professional, the massage she gave me was one of the best Ive ever had. Jen listened to what I wanted and needed, especially at this stage in my pregnancy, and I left feeling emotionally and physically relaxed. I would definitely book with Jen again and highly recommend her to prenatal and regular clients. read more

Meh. Tried Okra for a massage for the second time and I'm completely underwhelmed. I wanted to like this place so much - the people are friendly and the space is super cozy and warm. The first massage, the lady was super sweet but definitely not enough pressure - which we discussed the desired level prior to the massage. I figured maybe it was an off day for her so I gave it another shot - 2 hrs - and basically paid for someone to moisturize my body. I'm not sure what it is, it almost makes me feel unwelcome. Like maybe the masseuses there aren't comfortable with different types of bodies? I'm not sure, but I won't be back and I wouldn't recommend. For what's it worth, I've gotten better massages at Massage Envy. read more

Last month I went to Okra for a new client massage. I had references from friends so went in feeling really good about this business. During my massage I was sexually assaulted. I won't go into the details here b/c it is graphic and painful. I froze during the event. I am now learning through counseling this is a normal reaction. Flight, Fight or Freeze. I just wanted to get out of there safely and quickly. I alerted the business through their survey that they send after massages the very next day on what happened to me. I detailed every single thing that happened to me. No response and this massage therapist is still on the schedule. I also gathered up my courage and went to the police and filed a report. I find it terrifying that a business would allow this type of behavior to happen and to not take action. Sexual assault can destroy someone's life and predators should not be allowed to continue to have access to women. And yet this business that promotes empathy and compassion does not do anything to stop this criminal behavior and crimes against women. Looking back, I saw that another woman wrote a review 10 months ago that she was violated at Okra and turns out it was the same massage therapist. I wish I would have read that review because I never would have set up my appointment and I wouldn't be dealing with this trauma. Read your reviews and take them seriously. Your own personal safety is at stake. Please only give your business to companies that respect you and take your safety seriously. read more

Class pass brought me here for Sunday brunch yoga and I had a great time! The studio is really small, but very comfortable. I was greeted my the girl at the front who explained everything to me and was extremely friendly. The mat rentals are $2. They also have spaces for you to put your things. The class was a little over an hour and it was really easy to follow. I enjoyed it a lot. It was a relaxing, calming and stress free way to end the weekend and start the week. I will definitely be coming back to this place and would recommend it to anyone. Especially beginners!! read more

First my favorite iyoga nstructor does not teach there anymore. Another instructor canceled 5 min before the class and a few weeks later does not show up at all. My drive each way was 45 min. I looked for a different studio. I called to get the rest of my money back. Never got a reply nor my money. Will not recommend to my friends. read more

Considering the reviews, I was pretty nervous about coming here, but I still wanted to try it. Okra is so close to my house, I needed to check it out for myself. Overall, I liked the class. I attended Chillax Yoga Hour. This class ran a little longer and we started a few minutes late. Maybe this is normal for their late morning classes, but be warned if you are a punctual person this might not be the class for you. The instructor was hands on, which was great. I need all the help I can get! I do wish the instructor asked if we had any injuries or wanted assistance though. I do have injuries and I generally know how to work around them, but sometimes I don't. I really like that there's a tea/coffee bar in the front of this studio. It gives it a welcoming feel. read more

Took my Mom who was in town with me for a yoga class. I was worried a flow may be too advanced for her, so I took her to a deep stretch class. The yoga studio was nice with the wood floor, some light coming in through the windows, etc. It was a nice, calming space. We were not big fans of the deep stretch class. There was some spirituality to it as well, which is nice for some, but it was not what we were looking for. The class was not exercise. I love that they have a little bar for tea, coffee, kombucha, etc. Seems like a nice place to hang out before and after class. I think this studio is nice and welcoming. I just think we picked the wrong class. I will have to return for a more intense flow to see how I like it. read more

I've never experienced anything like PlanBreathe. Not too sure that I'm cut from the cloth of yoga, massages and all things alike, but it was a great experience. It was definitely a welcoming atmosphere. Very homey (i'm actually positive it used to be a house. Not all that uncommon for the Plaza Midwood area.) You walk in to a reception area and it has all wood floors. There's a welcoming fireplace and music playing. Definitely not a stuffy place. You can participate in different types of therapy/yoga and also get private massages. Lots of options and flexible times. James walked our group through the process of how to do breath therapy. It was one of the more interesting experiences I've ever had in Charlotte. Breath Therapy makes your body do some interesting things! You basically flood your body with oxygen by breathing through your mouth. Sounds odd, I know. Quite the sensation. Each person's experience will be different. It's rather hard to explain what you'll experience, but the staff will walk you through the entire process. Give them a call or visit their site for more details. Definitely wear something comfortable. Workout clothes would be ideal. A great little spot in Plaza! Thanks, James! read more

I started going to Okra after only taking about 5 previous yoga classes. I started with Chillax Yoga Flow (relaxing, calming, good for beginners), and have since moved to Vinyasa Flow and Revolution (heated). I even tried Ashtanga for the first time! Each teacher has really helped me learn a lot in a short time. I love that this studio really focuses on the mental and spiritual aspects of yoga - every teacher I've had always seems to say the perfect things. Lexi is awesome and has the best soundtracks! I also give her credit for helping me get to headstand. Brooke is another great instructor - hands on and seems to genuinely care about her students. If I had one piece of feedback, it would be to actually have a HOT class. If you go to the heated revolution class, don't expect it to be nearly as hot as a normal heated yoga class. Overall awesome studio! No judgment, welcoming, and always willing to help a new yogi! read more

Rebekah was great! So relaxing. Best massage since I moved to NC. The room was clean and staff was friendly. The table was warm and Rebekah followed my instructions. I wish there was music playing in the background and that I booked 75 mins or 90 mins read more

I went to a yin flow class that was actually just a laying on the ground in different positions, no "flow." It could be my fault in that that's what could be expected, but I've been to other yin classes that were more active and engaging. But I'm keeping my review to the teacher -- It's not professional to start class sipping from a to-go cup and announcing that you aren't good at this type of yoga or at knowing your lefts from your rights. ? At the end of class she went area and did adjustments on the head and neck area, and her hands smelled like garlic pizza. :/ Positive notes: The studio is cute, small, and clean. I just had a poor experience with this one teacher. read more

I love this place for it's homy and intimate atmosphere - it was adopted from and actual old house with all good spirits that come along. Classes are never crowded, so you don't have to sign up in advance, you can just drop in when you get in mood. Alicia pays a lot of attention to every student, she takes her time, gives personalized advice on how to grow in your practice. Unique idea of doing yoga in front of the fireplace, especially on cold days like now, is really comforting. Her optimizm is contaigus, as I always leave this place with an unaware smile. A lot of classes to try still, especially Breathwork with James, which I'm a bit afraid of as it might be addictive ;) Haven't figured out yet what's the purpose of live DJ during yoga, but that's just another reason why this place is one of a kind, always surprising. read more

My boyfriend and I received the 60-minute couples massage and our massage therapists were Tabitha and Janice. This was our first time at Okra and we were very excited considering it's so close to where we live. Tabitha and Janice were amazing and my boyfriend and I look forward to booking massages at Okra soon. I, also, purchased and redeemed the $25 for $50 Yelp coupon available for first time customers. Okra is a great little sanctuary tucked away on Commonwealth and I can't wait to go there and try out their yoga! read more

I recently purchased a Groupon for a 60-minute massage. Plan Breathe is in the Plaza Midwood area in a brick building on a corner...without really any signage on front. I had to interrupt a next door yoga class to figure out where I was supposed to be (sorry, yogis). There is a small waiting area next to the yoga studio and next to the waiting area is the massage room. I was promptly greeted by my massage therapist and whisked away to be pampered. The massage itself was very good. Cat did great work focusing on areas to help relieve tension from a stressful week at the job. Since the building is shared by the massage area and yoga studio, you can hear sounds from the class, but they try to minimize distractions by posting a sign in the waiting room to encourage quite voices and they have soothing music playing in the massage room. There is a nicely decorated bathroom connected to the massage room...with even a shower. There are two parallel parking spots directly in front of the building. There's plenty of parking on the street on the side going into a neighborhood. WIthin the next month or so they'll be moving to a new location not too far away. Hopefully they will have plenty of space to further separate the massage from the class...I just like less distractions when getting a massage. All in all, I was relaxed by the time I left. read more

Okra provides a much more intimate yoga experience compared to some of the larger studios in the greater-Charlotte area. I really like the space, including the yoga room and the tea/coffee bar. I've taken deep stretch, chillax flow, and a heated vinyasa class. I adored the deep stretch and chillax flow classes, but the heated class simply didn't get hot enough for my taste -it was uncomfortably warm but not hot enough to get a good sweat. I really enjoy the light in the studio, the professionalism of the instructors, and the general vibe and pace of the classes. Okra is a very welcoming and peaceful studio, you should definitely give it a try! read more

This is by far one of the best studios I have been to ever! The atmosphere is so calming and zen. In recent years yoga has become such a hit that I think there are a lot of studios that treat the spiritual practice as nothing more than an entrepreneurial opportunity, but Okra is not that kind of studio. Okra has taken the time to have the small touches that makes me feel calm and welcomed when I walk through the door. Tucked away in a building in Plaza Midwood, Okra has a hip exterior and a welcoming open window setup that looks into their tea room. When you walk in you are greeted by the scent of aromatherapy diffusers that are pumping calming scents into the air (the day I went the place smelled of lavender). The woman at the desk was amazingly friendly and extremely sweet and not in the annoying kind of way, in the legit "I am so glad you joined us today" kind of way. I hit up a vinyasa flow class that was taught by the amazing young woman (I don't recall her name). One of my pet peeves in yoga studios is feeling like an instructor is judging you in your practice and often times in posher studios I have felt judgement for sure, but not a Okra. The vibe was so zen, welcoming, and judgment free. The class was challenging and really walked through the spiritual side of things and not just lets do this to loosen up some muscles or get some abs. I will definitely be back to try out their new student special 2 weeks unlimited yoga for $20! After class you can enjoy a pot of tea with friends in their tea room or patio which is a great way to build community within the studio. Kudos to you Okra for making yoga accessible, affordable, and welcoming! read more

I stumbled on this studio when I first moved to town, and I an very grateful for it! They offer a variety of classes at a variety of times- I just wish I was able to attend more of the weekday ones. I really enjoy the instructors, and there is enough variety to not get "burned out" on any one, and to be able to take a little something different from each. If you are new to yoga, nothing to fear- it's an environment that embraces all levels! read more

I went for a Deep Tissue Massage with Tabitha as my therapist. I have not found many therapists in the area who are capable of doing deep tissue to my specifications, but Tabitha was wonderful, and had a grateful, humble presence. Love this sweet spot! Took my first yoga class at this place with Liz Baxter. She was easy going and informative. I have been doing yoga for a while, but I loved the energy of her teaching, as well as the whole Place:) There is a little cafe as well as massages! Going back for sure. read more

I'll start by saying I have not actually participated in a yoga class but attended a special event at Okra. It was a guest speaker on Healthy Living. Okra it's self is a cute place. It has a retail place on the street level with the studio down stairs. The retail space sells coffee/tea, clothes and other items. The studio space down stairs is fairly small. The speak i attend was just okay. She was very nice and I respect her life style choice to eliminate sugar. I guess I went in expecting a little more on the how. I'm not sure if I gained any additional information from this. I would like to go back and try yoga with Okra. read more

READ THIS BEFORE SCHEDULING A MASSAGE. I was repeatedly touched inappropriately during my massage. I told Okra about it, and in the review request that Okra sent afterward, I told them what happened, I did not even get a response. NOTHING. In fact, the massage therapist, Russell, is still employed there. I cannot believe that Okra is turning a blind eye to this predator. This was my review written nearly a year ago. Since then, another woman, and possibly many more, have been assaulted by this man: Got the CREEPIEST, most uncomfortable "massage" here a couple of weeks ago. I was so upset afterward that I could barely keep myself together. When asked by the the receptionist "How was your massage?" I told her it was "awkward, uncomfortable, terrible." She asked if I wanted to speak to the manager, but I was so upset that told her I just wanted to go home. She asked if the manager could call me later and I said yes. She told me the manager would be in touch, but I never heard from her---even after I filled out and returned a review form that came automatically in my email after my massage. Even after I said how I had been inappropriately touched, and felt too vulnerable (laying there naked) to do anything but try to maneuver away from touches WAY too close to private areas. Please understand---I've had HUNDREDS of massages in my lifetime; and the best massages have been from male massage therapists---but I've NEVER before felt uncomfortable, and certainly never felt violated before. I will never go back. I finally told the police about the inappropriate massage, after another customer at okra was violated! read more

I have heard great things about Okra, so I decided to try their New Student massage special - 60 minutes for $49, what a deal! I scheduled my appointment and was promptly greeted and checked in when I arrived. They gave me a sheet asking for any specific pain points, so I mentioned my neck/shoulders - and my therapist, Janice, was SO attentive to the pain points I mentioned! By the time I left, my neck and shoulders felt less tense than ever, I felt like a puddle of melted butter (both from the physical massage and purely relaxing environment). Janice offered the ideal amount of pressure throughout the massage, firm without being painful. She was extremely professional and made it such a positive experience for me. Thank you, Janice!!! read more

Go Virtual! Wow- the team at Okra has classes everyday that come to you where ever you are. No dress code (you can leave your video off), no travel needed. I do miss getting assists and in person attention but the energy comes thru and you can still say "hi" to fellow yogis. Many times there is an instructor and a demonstrating yogi. I am practicing more than before. I am grateful for the efforts of Okra and cant wait til Charlotte is safe enough to meet in the studio. They told me that when they open they will still keep the virtual classes going-I will probably keep doing both even when I feel comfortable to come back in person. read more
