What a great little Studio! They've really worked hard to create a strong Community Vibe! My husband and I moved here about a year-and-a-half ago from San Diego where there's a yoga studio on every corner. It has been difficult since we moved here to find a true Home Place! Most of the yoga seems to be very gym oriented, but this studio is the real deal it's true authentic yoga! That's okay if that's not your thing, but we were really searching for something where we felt right at home and the studio is it! Wow what an amazing space - I started out with the 2 week yoga pass to get grounded. 3 weeks later and I just experienced a most wonderful massage followed by a powerful meditation experience. I've been to two yoga classes and really liked them -- especially the Primal qigong-yoga hybrid class. That said, I'm really put off by the fact that this studio has not addressed the sexual assault allegations with the victims, on this Yelp page, or with the news station that reported on the arrest. I asked about it at the studio and the woman at the front desk seemed annoyed that I would ask and told me that it's "private." Well, it's not private because it's on the Internet in multiple places. This attitude comes off as apathy for an issue that all too prevalent in the news right now and I'm surprised that a business whose target demographic is women wouldn't take the time to formulate a statement for their online presence and do some employee training on how to address any inquiries like mine. I want to continue to go to this studio because I like the yoga classes, but it almost feels like an ethical dilemma. As a PR major, I can say this is extremely poor crisis management. read more

I love coming to this yoga studio. I am not a yogi or even all that flexible, so I'm pretty self conscience about going to studios and classes. I got a Groupon to try this studio out a few months back and couldn't be happier, I've bought another set of classes even. The instructors make you feel like it isn't a bad thing to have to bend your knees, and actually encourage people to do that rather than be in poor posture. The $7 classes are pretty full, so definitely if you're going for one be there early, but the membership classes aren't packed like that. They also have a nice tea shop so that if you are going for an early evening class you can go before or stay after to sip tea and extend the relaxation time beyond the class. read more

I give this place 3 stars because of the facilities. Let me start out by saying that this studio offers a diverse and interesting array of classes from all sorts of different yoga disciplines. The instructors are stellar - I especially enjoyed Carrie and Ashley. I learned something new with every class that I took during my two-week trial pass that I purchased, which is perhaps saying something, as I have been practicing yoga for 13 years. The staff is on the whole pleasant. My "problem" with this studio lies in the facility... namely, that the air circulation inside the practice studio is nonexistent. Don't get me wrong, I love a hot yoga class... but a muggy, stagnant, people-breath yoga class? No thanks. I've heard tell that this studio is going to move to a different location soon. When it does, I'd love to give it another chance! read more

I booked an hour massage here with Claudio. I work as a barber so I like to get massages regularly for my shoulders and legs. Claudio has a degree in sports & exercise science so he knows muscles inside and out. He worked muscles I had never felt before. It is INTENSE but I have never felt this awake or relaxed. It's so refreshing to take an actual yoga class where the instructor reminds you to coordinate your movement with your breath and doesn't try to entertain you while you practice. Ahhh. This place is new, but I'm a big fan already - the studio has a beautiful design and is a relaxing place to come. I've only done some of the meditative yoga classes, but the teachers have been helpful and friendly. I haven't tried the tea room yet, but the selection looks great! Three of my girlfriends and I visited Okra on Saturday afternoon and we left feeling refreshed, exuberant and ready to take on the world -- or at least Queen City. It was all anyone could talk about on the car ride to Monroe, so while I *shouldn't* speak for them, I can say without a doubt that everyone LOVED the experience. Two of the women had never even had a massage and the looks on their faces as they entered the lobby were priceless! Who should you get? Well...Claudio is ah-mazing. I live 2.5 hours away and had never been to Charlotte before but will definitely be back to schedule a session with him and let him work his magic. Personally, I love hot stone massages and wasn't expecting anything special but he applies just the right amount of pressure to relieve stress without making you want to yell out from the pain. The space gives off a really positive vibe which is probably more the energy of the owner, manager and massage therapists than anything else. Great prices, great tea and the deep stretch yoga is everything. If you're in the neighborhood , GO! If you're not in the neighborhood, drive over & GO! read more

I love this place, the atmosphere, the location, the yoga classes and teachers. It is a warm and positive environment for everyone, experienced and inexperienced, in shape, and out. I am a 1/2 dozen classes or so into my Groupon and I'm absolutely positive I will keep going. They offer all sorts of deals and affordable classes for those like me on a tight budget. I am completely in love with deep stretch. I have taken it with 4 different teachers now and each of them brought something different and lovely to it. I love that they switch things up and keep a few things the same every time. The teachers are all warm and welcoming, but in different ways. Some are more informative and verbal, some are more hands-on, but I haven't found a single one to be unwelcoming or too "touchy." I am one of those people who generally hates being touched or singled out in any workout class, but I haven't ever felt uncomfortable in the slightest which to me is absolute and solid proof that the atmosphere and people involved have the most warm, positive and genuine energy! I tried another yoga spot in Charlotte and it was an utterly awful experience (I had to go to Okra for a class after so I could get my positive energy back!) so now I am officially devoted to Okra! PS: This is my first Yelp review ever! PPS: Parking is not a problem at all. If you are confused by the parking there ask one of the lovely humans inside. I can sincerely say I've never had better massages than the ones I've received at Okra, and I've had a LOT of massages in my injury-prone life. (the first 2 were reduced-price ones with a coupon, which speaks especially well of the business and the therapists!). I've received deep tissue from Claudio, Cat, and Janice -- they were all amazing. I have back problems, migraines, crazy-tight muscles from working at a computer ... and these therapists are experts at what they do! Cat is probably my favorite (I'd give her an 11, and the others a 9+). The business is professional, easy to book with (online or over phone); the therapists listen to your needs and adjust as directed while you're on the table. I've always received a full 60 minutes (so many places don't give you that). This is the first online review I've ever given - I feel that strongly about the high quality of their services. read more

This update is in regards to the massages. I went back for a second one recently. Since I was so happy with my last hour deep tissue massage, I decided to upgrade to a 75 minute massage. Unfortunately, Rebekah does not work on weekends so I was assigned to someone else. I was rather disappointed this time around. I have never had an issue with too much pressure (in fact I usually ask for more pressure) and this time around it was quite painful and I had to ask for her to use less pressure. I cannot pinpoint the style difference, but it just didn't have that idea flow and relaxation effect that good massages come with. That evening, I had dark red bruise like spots on the areas she had massaged before asking her to go lighter, and felt quite sore.. not the "to be expected" kind of tender after deep tissue massage either. Massages sure aren't cheap in general and are my splurge every now and then, so it was quite disappointing. read more

Instructor was great, slow and easy yet gives great stretch and core workout. But facility was very uncomfortable. It does not have AC or window or even vents for air to flow. I was so ready to get out from that muddy air and be able to breath before the class ended. And my whole body smelt with candle thing they burn through out the class that was another disturbance. If I didn't buy multiple classes, I would look for other studio. Sorry...but it was all poor facility. read more

I adore this studio. All of the classes I've taken have been enjoyable. This studios approach to yoga is so much more holistic and comprehensive compared to other places. The teachers teach with poses and modifications, but they also often have a theme for the class or a reading. They make the experience a treat for the mind and body, rather than just the body. They offer lots of different workshops that are fun to go to. I just wish they were cheaper/offered yoga as cheap as some of the other places in town. This is a clean, well kept, well decorated, welcoming studio space with lots of historical charm and character. Prices are reasonable, instructors and support staff friendly, and there is a decent selection of retail items too. I really enjoyed my first visit (attended Deep Stretch class last night - the instructor had us do some interesting exercises against a wall, something I had never previously done) and look forward to going back! read more

Our first visit to this studio and my first impression is that it is a pain to get in and out of Okra. Parking is virtually non existent, if you don't already know the neighborhood get to your appointment early or you will be late as you search the sides of the roads for an empty parking slot. The receptionist was snotty and snide. This was distressing as I came for a calming soothing gong mediation class, having our reservation lost and being requested to pay for the same class twice did not make a good experience in my opinion. The studio itself looks like a converted modified ranch art deco type house and smelled a little musty like houses on the beach (which I liked myself). The studio room had hard wood floors and was a nice open room which was good for the class. The Gong Class with Bill Smith was very good and enjoyable. The sounds from the variety of gongs and other instruments were very soothing and almost made up for the hassle to get in and problems with the receptionist. I would recommend Bill Smith if he was there but I don't think I would bother with the place otherwise unless you lived in walking distance and don't mind potentially paying twice. read more
