The décor, the lighting, the menu... everything makes you feel like you've been transported somewhere far beyond Indiana. It's chic, modern, intimate, and full of energy. I went on a Thursday and was pleasantly surprised by a live DJ. I found myself dancing in my seat while enjoying incredible food, great drinks, and excellent service from our bartender, Jackson. Here's what I ordered: Agedashi Tofu - Deep-fried tofu served in a warm dashi broth. Tempura Medley - A delicious mix of shrimp and vegetable tempura. Steak Tataki - Seared steak with the chef's signature dressing, topped with mustard seeds and arugula. Every bite was amazing. I was so excited to try Okonori, but the service was beyond disappointing. I could not focus on enjoying a drink with my friend because the bartender was incessantly complaining and cussing loudly for the entirety of our visit. Unacceptable behavior for an establishment that wants to claim "fine dining." My friend and I were asked to pose for a promotional video, which we happily accepted until a group of men made us uncomfortable and we decided to leave early. The sushi roll I ordered was underwhelming for the price point. Two stars because the interior design is stunning, everything was presented beautifully, & DJ Mae's set is always lovely. We enjoyed our dinner last night even more than we hoped! Our omakase was delectable and everything we ate was fresh and seasoned perfectly. The soft shell crab roll was also a standout. The care and artistry was not only evident in our meal prep, but also in the outstanding design of the restaurant, down to the last detail- even the restrooms. We cannot recommend Okinori more. So first off I'm not a big fan of raw oysters but that might have changed yesterday. My friend talked me into going and trying their $1 oysters and baby let me tell you something. They were amazingly delicious. The combination of sauces they had in the oyster shell was very tasty and then to top it off they had caviar to garnish them with. OMG they were so good. Best ones I've ever had. Also had some edamame with savory garlic and chili sauce on them. Delicious. Also had an old fashion which was made to perfection. The place was beautiful inside and the bartender was extremely polite and helpful. All in all it was great. I'll definitely be going back. FYI they have $1 oysters every Monday. 10/10 read more

My friends took me here for my birthday and it did not disappoint. The ambiance is very nice and the restaurant itself was very pretty. All the staff that interacted us were fantastic as well. Onto the food. Everything we ordered was extremely tasty and very fresh. It was easy to tell. The best part? Real wasabi! Not horse radish. That was so exciting cause it's so hard to find real wasabi at restaurants especially in the Midwest and outside Chicago. I could go on and on about the food but everything we ordered was fantastic. When we walked in we were greeted with amazing customer service and asked if we wanted our coats checked which was nice. The inside is smaller than we expected but love how upscale the architecture is. Our server was very attentive and helpful with recommendations on the menu. To drink my husband got the iki, their version of old fashion. I got a special drink on their Valentine's Day menu I unfortunately didn't get a pic of the special cocktail menu and can't find online. It was very good! I got two, it came with a honey stick so you could make it as sweet as you want. For appetizers we got the potato ebi furai which reminded me of bang bang shrimp. The potato ebi furai is not soaked in the bang bang sauce, it has a side of sweet and spicy sauce to dip it in. We also got the sashimi fatty bluefin and king salmon. The king salmon was paired with black truffle and the bluefin was pairs with caviar. It added a complementary taste to it. For sushi we got Spicy bluefin tuna , Kari Kari shrimp and Blue ryujin. Blue ryujin was our fav. I asked the server once we finished our food what roll did we not get she recommends and she said the spicy Hokkaido scallop one. They import all of their food from Hokkaido . Japan, but the tuna they import from Spain. Okonori is family owned and you can tell majority of their staff is family. Really noisy, but that is the vibe on a Friday night. They have some interesting cocktails, and the bar is high energy and fun. The chili crisp edamame was amazing. The best dish we ordered was a New York strip with fries - it was excellent. That being said, the sushi was disappointing, and I don't expect the best thing on the menu to be a steak. The hamachi Kama was really good as well. They have excellent fresh fish but are too worried about gilding the Lilly. Sushi is good rice and high quality fish - throwing tasteless jarred truffle on top didn't do anything for me. The nigiri would be a lot better without all the fancy additions, which just detract from the quality of the fish. The booths are awkward to get in and out, so limber up in the parking lot if you are sitting along the window. All in all the food was good but didn't justify the price, there are much better sushi options at a better price point in the city. Service was okay, not very attentive and polite but in a hurry. That being said, it's a fun night out, and a nice treat once in a while. read more

Aesthetics were beautiful, literally felt like I was in NYC; our table looks like tatami mats on the floor but there's a hole for our legs We got some rolls from their soft opening menu. All the fish in our rolls was minced (not my preference). The fish was pretty fresh and rolls overall were lightly seasoned. But for a Saturday at 6:30, service was fast, friendly and attentive! We each had a drink- espresso martinis are very good, the margarita... eh- and 3 rolls to share because we weren't super hungry. 2 rolls (Kari-kari shrimp and spicy scallop) were really good but the 3rd (Nami heat) was just ok, just not our fave. Okonori is truly something special. From the moment you walk in, you can see the extraordinary attention to detail. The restaurant itself is absolutely stunning -- in my opinion, one of the most beautiful dining spaces in the Indianapolis area -- but what impressed us even more was the quality of the food. We started with the Potato Ebi Furai, shrimp wrapped in delicate crispy potato, which was fantastic. I also had the Agedashi Tofu and loved being able to enjoy the beautifully crisp tofu with the warm, flavorful broth while still preserving that wonderful texture. The seafood throughout our meal was exceptional. The shrimp and egg custard dishes were delicate and delicious, and the scallop soup completely changed my mind about scallops. I have never particularly cared for their texture, but these were incredibly tender and beautifully prepared. That dish really highlighted what stood out to me about Okonori: the remarkable quality of the seafood and the care taken with every ingredient. The snow crab was another standout -- beautifully presented in a small martini glass and absolutely delicious. My husband enjoyed the lunch pork special, and the strawberry matcha mocktail was fantastic. We couldn't stop admiring the sushi coming from the sushi bar. The presentation was gorgeous, and watching the chefs work made it obvious how much skill and precision goes into everything they serve. And then there is the atmosphere. Okonori is sophisticated and striking, yet still feels warm and welcoming. Every detail -- the decor, presentation, service and food -- feels intentional. Haley took wonderful care of us and could not have been sweeter. This is elevated Japanese dining done beautifully. Exceptional ingredients, incredibly talented chefs, gracious service and one of the most gorgeous restaurant spaces in the Indianapolis area. This place is stunning inside. You almost forget you're in Carmel, Indiana. The service was great, and the overall vibe was impressive. My only real gripe was the portion sizes. Each roll came with just five pieces, which made sharing among three people a bit awkward. We tried the Spicy Bluefin Tuna, Spicy Hokkaido Scallop, and the Nami Heat. They were all decent, but not quite excellent. For comparison, my favorite sushi spot on the north side is still Blue Sushi. Even though it's a chain, we consistently enjoy it, and I'd still choose it over this place. Food is mediocre and for what they charge, should be more creative and tasty instead of using same old same old salmon, snapper, yellowtail that is most likely frozen. You can also do a sake pairing, which definitely added to the overall experience. The cocktails are interesting with a unique twist to each of them. A little underwhelming especially for the price point. Service was fine and the food was quite good (better than most around Carmel) just not great and the temura was good, but not as crispy as I remember. Also, maybe it was a misunderstanding, but a few times it felt like they were being somewhat condescending, not rude per se, just did not feel that they thought we were worthy, while they were extra attentive to a black couple at the bar behind the main bar. Maybe they had more needs and asked more questions, but the experience was just disappointing overall so we probably won't be back. I will give them a four star based on the fact that they are trying to make a name for themselves in Carmel and I do hope they are successful and I think the food is much better than most restaurants in the area. read more

It's more like a nightclub. Shouldn't the chefs be wearing hats? I personally think this is very unhygienic. We had an amazing experience at Okonori last night. First, the restaurant look and ambiance is amazing. I think it is the nicest I have been in, in the greater Indianapolis area. This was our first visit(my son and I). We had been told they have something like a tasting menu. I did not see this when I looked online. I arrived early and the General Manager was telling me about the restaurant. I inquired about a "tasting menu". He mentioned some Chef's selections on the menu and they have an Omakase table. He explained the omakase, but said they only have scheduled sittings for this. I said we would like to do that and will try another night to make a reservation for the omakase table. He quickly went and talked to the chefs and told me that he could accommodate us for the omakase table. The experience was incredible! We had our own chef(Ben). He prepared each of the 14 courses individually. I have eaten a pretty decent number of Sushi places and this was by far the best. Actually, nothing else comes close to this and is probably the best meal I have ever had. We did the sake pairing and it too was really fun. Annie was in charge of the sake and talked to us about each one and each food item that we had. It was expensive, but I still feel like it was a great value. All of the ingredients come directly from Japan. I saw some reviews mentioning this was like a restaurant in New York. It is definitely the caliber of high end sushi in New York. In fact, Annie and Chef Jimmy have moved here directly from New York. Sorry this is so long. I don't write a lot of reviews, but I really feel this experience should be shared and others should flock to Okonori for excellent food.
