Went to the Texas-Ohio State game here a few years ago. It turned out to be one of the toughest games for Texas on their way to the national championship.
One item that should be mentioned at the outset -- Ohio State has the absolute worst fans in the entire country. Terms like obnoxious and sophomoric cannot provide justice as descriptions for these overly aggressive individuals. On my flight alone, a simple small talk question to a guy in an Ohio State hat led to an incredibly brusque response that made me wish that his seat wasn't next to mine. It continued throughout the evening as unprovoked, absurd comments about the girls (telling them to return their Texas whorehouses, etc.) led to a number of instances where fists were nearly thrown (it should be noted that on my flight back, no less than five guys were sporting shiners of the non-beer variety). My best friend is an Ohio State fan, and I used to think he was an incredible douche when it came to his "passion" for this football team. If the people I met in Columbus before and during the game are any indication (they were pretty quiet after their team got wore down by a national championship winning Texas team), he should receive accolades for his sportsmanship.
I know what you are saying. None of that has to do with the actual stadium. Except the stadium is filled with 95% of the exact people I just described. So maybe it is relevant. What is also relevant is that Ohio State is a difficult venue to secure a road ticket only partially due to demand by Ohio State fans. The other important reason stems from the fact that Ohio State intentionally undersells tickets to road teams to try and create a greater advantage for their home team. It works. Except against Texas. Hook em.
It definitely is not all bad though. The field is incredible, the stadium has a nice old school feel to it, and I was similarly impressed with the crowd noise. However, I should add the caveat that it seems like Ohio State fans are programmed to expect to lose big games. They never seem to have true confidence at the right moments and their team's lack of resiliency underscores the collective beliefs of the fan base. It's odd because Ohio State is certainly a traditional power that actually has won a number of national championships. Still, one cannot shake the feeling that the team itself does not believe it can win the big game.
In sum, Ohio Stadium isn't all that bad, but many stadiums in the SEC are the true barometer. If you want to see a truly breathtaking stadium with a matching atmosphere, I'd suggest taking a trip down South to Death Valley, Bryant-Denny, Neyland Stadium, and Jordan-Hare. Or maybe you can just take the relatively short drive to the Big House. In any event, Ohio Stadium is worth a visit if only to experience Big 10 football in a 100,000+ stadium. read more
