The good ole' Horseshoe, folks! Julia R and I visited Ohio, and of course had to make it to a Buckeye's game. It was her first time to the Shoe, as we call it. We walked up to the stadium with the rest of the crowd - full of excitement and ready for a W-I-N! As you'd probably guess, parking was a bit tricky, but overall we found a spot in a garage and headed to the stadium. Getting into the Shoe was pretty seamless, the mandatory check-in and searching of each individual was efficient. Once we got into the building, it was clear that the space was clean and ready for the game. We found our seats right away (at the 50-yard line!!) and then went back into the main area to grab a drink and some snacks. The lines for food and beverages were quick had many options - a Michelob Ultra for me and a cider for Julia. The staff was very friendly and got us pumped up about the game. The Buckeye win was the most magical part of the day, but the football stadium made for an excellent experience and got us really hyped about spending our Saturday afternoon in a great college atmosphere. Ohio Stadium is massive, OSU fans are passionate to say the least, the campus is sprawling and beautiful, and the tailgating is fun...so why only a two-star rating? I was very excited to watch the Oklahoma Sooners take on the Buckeyes in a prime time matchup, but I got to actually watch very little of the game because $265 gets you a partially obstructed view in the visitor section from which I couldn't hear the PA or even see any replays on the screens. There is something amazing about being in a place that holds 105,000 people in a single space, but if you're sitting in the B Deck...you're essentially staring at mostly pillars, smelling a lot of flatulence, and constantly being knocked into for the entirety of the game. The horseshoe shaped business is all fine and dandy...if you're riding in the Good Year blimp or looking at aerial shots on TV. Luckily there are supposed to be improvements to the TVs and sound system in the B Deck, but anyone who has the misfortune of sitting there this season will basically have to make out replays on 20" screens that look like they were salvaged from an out of business Econo Lodge, and finding out what basic game information (score, downs, etc.) was nearly impossible for some folks. This is supposed to a storied ballpark, but unless you're a total OSU groupie (of which I'm sure there are plenty), this is a fairly below average ball park. read more

Awesome seats. I have been to a lot of games. This time I took my daughter who was in town from college. She always gets the same thing. I always get the same thing. I get a hotdog and drink. She gets a soft pretzel and water. How old are the pretzels. These will be the last ones we get at a game. It has to be the supplier on this one. The last few events we went to we had to throw away the pretzel because they wer hard. If it is the stadium, keep them fresh For the price you pay. Do better. read more

The Shoe, for how huge it is, is pretty easy to maneuver around; we have never had a problem finding our seats. The restrooms are also easy to find. The vendors are abundant as well. However, my biggest issue with the Ohio Stadium is their lack of allergy friendly foods and beverages. They are big enough to have at least one gluten free friendly vendor! Or add wine, liquor, or something! The stands are clean and aren't uncomfortable, but I've been plenty of people bring pads to sit on. I remember when there was a dorm here, because I called it home for a couple of years. It wasn't fancy. It wasn't even decent. But it was cheap, and we could sneak into the games. I haven't been to any recent games at Ohio Stadium because it keeps getting more and more fucking expensive, though have had lots of fun times. If you haven't seen the Buckeyes play here you have to. This place seriously controls the mood of Columbus when football plays. Additionally, it's a nice building and should be explored away from the gameday commotion and traffic. There is much that can be seen in and around it. As always, football will be the most popular thing to do here. The stadium has more than 100,000 seats. Some of them are great, and some of them are not so much, but wherever you sit there will be plenty of action to see. The upper seats are way up but you are able to see the entire field. A lot can also be seen around the stadium. Outside the stadium is a grove of Buckeye trees with each honoring a Buckeye named a member of the All-American team. It's pretty big, so there has been quite an impressive amount of talent. Really the only negative about the experience is the cost. You have to pay more and more each year. It's still a pretty good amount even for alumni. There are other costs like concessions and parking, but it's a priceless experience if you are a Buckeyes or otherwise a college football fan to see a game here. I recommend this to any general sports fan. If you like college football and have never been here, your life is not complete. You should be there for the big rivalry, but any time they are playing is pretty fun to watch. read more

I'm not the world's biggest Buckeye fan. Not even close. But I'm a sports enthusiast - and if you are too, you need to go to The Shoe. It's one of those sports meccas everyone should see. But what I've come to understand about the Shoe is that it's more than just college football and the home team - the experience you'll find there is really a celebration of the state of Ohio. Yes they're the Buckeyes and the celebrity band. But the Shoe is also the shrine of the state, and pride in the state of Ohio rings throughout the venue. State pride is at the center of everything that happens over the course of your time there. The Shoe could rest on its laurels and just soak in the praises of everyone who travels to its hallowed grounds. But this year, the Shoe did more, opening its arms to host three mega concerts: The Rolling Stones, the Buckeye Country Music Festival and One Direction. I attended the Stones and the Kenny Chesney/Keith Urban/Cole Swindell portion of the festival and was blown away under the evening summer skies. The venue scenery - especially under the lights - couldn't have been more glorious. Columbus needs a big time concert venue with the extinction of the old Polaris Amphitheatre and the Shoe (Ohio State) has the goods to host more of these shows if they want them. I've been to many college football stadiums, and they are all exciting in some similar ways, yet some are more unique than others. There's no other way to experience the Buckeye Nation than at the Horseshoe, and I don't regret my visit but I'm not sure that I would ever return. On the positives, it's historic and it's always thrilling to visit a place in person after having seen it so many times on television. Any sport is more fun live and in person. This stadium is almost twice as big as Northwestern's home field, and about 10 times as loud. I've had a career in event management, and the security here is excellent. I notice these things. From the ushers to the police, the in-house to the subcontracts, this place is run well. Concessions are only slightly overpriced and service is quick. As you might expect there are no healthy food choices, though I'm not sure that I would choose healthy at a football game anyway. As you might not expect, you can get beer here, though that is more overpriced than the food. In spite of the crowd, minimal wait for restrooms, signs and directions are clearly posted, sightlines are mostly good unless your friends get you tickets right behind the band, score boards and sound system are top notch. You don't need a sound system to enjoy the OSU marching band, they are elite and should not be missed. Come early and stay late to hear and see. Don't waste time at halftime standing in line for a hot dog, use the rest room earlier or later, instead see and experience the halftime show. There are two negatives, one common, one unique. As is the case in all the Big Ten stadiums I've sat in, the seats are uncomfortable and too narrow. The assumption seems to be that all fans are about 135 lbs. At capacity, and this place is always at capacity, this means that if everyone is sitting, not everyone can sit. At an exciting game, this isn't a problem, we spent a lot of our time standing. At any given time, some people are not at their seats, so it sort of works out, but the comfort difference with professional football stadium seating is notable. Maybe this is just part of the college football experience. The unique negative is Ohio State Football Subculture, in some ways very different from the rest of the Big Ten. I've been to away games wearing Northwestern Purple and every place but here I've felt safe and welcome. Good-natured teasing never trumps good sportsmanship elsewhere, we're all graduates of excellent research universities (well except for the University of Illinois). We're all Big Ten fans, and we all know what it feels like to be disappointed by our teams. Probably most Ohio State fans are also like this, but in a crowd of 100,000, if one in ten are rude and obnoxious, that's a difficult environment if you're one of the 5% of attendees wearing visiting team colors. I experienced an uncomfortable amount of verbal abuse on the way in and out (which is a long process on game day Saturday) well beyond the friendly trash talking fan banter acceptable elsewhere. I'm not talking about drunken college students, I'm a college professor, I'm well used to disrespectful 20 year olds, but rather actual adults who should know better. Inside the stadium the crowd control workers make everyone feel safe, and sitting near the band family and guests is different because there's a musician sense of camaraderie and respect that transcends football. I'm a pretty brave guy, generally. I used to work an ambulance serving the Stateway Gardens Housing Projects in Chicago's South Side; for a while I was the sole overnight security guard in a doll factory. But here, I was reminded of the advertising tagline for "Aliens" when it first came out: "There are some places in the Universe you don't go alone." read more

Hallowed Ground. Whenever I am here, I feel like Rudy's Dad when he said, "This is the most beautiful sight these eyes have ever seen." Football Saturday at The 'Shoe is epic and iconic. There's lots of space around the stadium for fans to mill around together and work up a frenzy waiting for the Drum Major to touch his plume on the backbend, and to hear the band play Hang On Sloopy when we get ahead by 4 touchdowns. Only a scant few places in College Football can match OSU on game day. Alabama, Georgia, and Florida State come to mind. Notre Dame fell off the list...too polite and the team stinks. read more

OSU is actually a Japanese word, it means "to push", according to Mulder. Some cute Ohio girl said this may be the best place in the world to watch college football and she may be right. It's a more impressive and spectacular stadium than Michigan's is, it's also Red (the colour of Liverpool) which is better than Blue, and it's in a city that is way way way better for food (Columbus rather than Ann Arbor). First-Hand Experience: Info on my personal visit to this stadium - I've seen Ohio State play here and it's absolutely intense. It's the best college football experience out there. Just make sure you are a part of that crowd someday. It's so worth it. Now that I've been to every NFL stadium (current and former) and seen all 32 teams play live in the flesh, time to review them on Yelp! I love stadia! I've been to every cool sports arena in the UK & North America, it's an obsession I have with travel & sport. I've roamed America as a musician for years. This is a great stadium and an amazing place to watch a football game. Aside from the fact that I'm a huge buckeye fan. I was privileged enough to have season tickets for three seasons so I've seen many games here. I've sat in AA, A, B and C decks. Even sat one game in the student section in the south stands. There's hardly a bad seats. Worst place I sat was in the upper B deck, covered section. It's a bit hard to see the game, but they do have score boards back there and tvs. It's just not the same experience because you aren't in the open air. A few notes if you are attending a game for the first time: carry your own ticket at all times. They will ask you for it if you leave your seat then return. And if you get caught without it they will hassle you and can even make you leave. Concessions takes plastic and cash. They will give small cups of free ice water. If you're attending a big game, start your walk to the Shoe at least 45 mins prior to kick off. Lane Ave gets extremely crowded as do the paths around and leading into the Shoe. You can not bring in umbrellas, beverage containers of any kind (even if empty) and professional size cameras. You can bring in blankets, purses and small bags and they will check them as you enter. Most importantly - wear your buckeye gear and cheer for Ohio State (if you cheer for the other guys be prepared to be harassed). Go Bucks! read more

B-Deck under the stands can be hard, being that their are roman columns that block your view. The South stands is awful when the action is in the north end-zone, as is sitting in the north and vice versus. But there really is no nosebleeds as I have seen classic seasons from there and enjoyed it well. This place just screens history, tradition, good times, and awesome memories. It is a shrine to college football, There are plenty of concessions ringing the stadium. Restrooms can be a wait, as you would expect among 100, 000 fans. If you are a rival coming fr the first time, Buckeye Nation is full of warm, wonderful people, unfortunately, there are jerks among us. I was actually surprised how small the seats are and how filthy the restrooms were. I am a ladies size 6/8 and my butt went side to side of the numbered space. I can't even imagine paying the prices of a ticket here in a sold out event and being packed in like that. I attended a high school band show where the facilities weren't even 25% occupied and the bathrooms were disgusting with a 1/4" water around the toilets by the end of the evening. The concessions are priced extremely high. I got a bottle of water and a soft pretzel for $10. The OSU marching band was a treat to see. I'm glad I had the opportunity. I know I'm partial because I'm a Buckeye... BUT: anyone who walks up to the Shoe has to admit it is somewhat of an architectural marvel. The exterior as you walk up into the front entrance is just beautiful! This is definitely a great spot to get a group pic before entering. The parking lot and entrances wrap all around the stadium, allowing for many different lines to get in during football games. Once inside, the seats are pretty normal for a very large stadium- it is statistically one of the largest in college football. As you climb toward the top, the stairs get pretty steep and the seats are more "bleacher" style. The lower deck seats are nicer and some sections even have backs on the seats. Once you sit down, you can finally see how awesome the field is! The bright green grass with the perfectly painted lettering and yard measurements. The new scoreboard is really nice as well, also easy to see compared to the older one. This is a must see for any Buckeye fan! I've also heard that the few concerts held here are pretty neat too. read more

I attended The Game in 2022. I had a notion to be here that day because a majority of college football experts predicted that this could've been one of the most memorable contests in the history of the Michigan-Ohio State rivalry. I also attended because my singing instructor, who is an OSU alum, encouraged me to go as a way to experience being a Buckeye. Autumn of 2022 marked my first semester as a student at Ohio State. I sat in the south endzone area. Actually, I stood during the majority of the game as the other enthusiastic students were standing. They created an electric atmosphere and manifested their pride as Buckeyes. They cheered when CJ Stroud threw a couple touchdowns passes or whenever the Buckeyes scored. They made intimidating noises whenever Michigan had the ball. Despite it being ineffective to the opposing team, it was amusing to witness. A female behind me kept blaring out derogatory comments on Michigan and the town of Ann Arbor. She fully despised it whenever a male, holding a gigantic Michigan flag, was running along the end zone after each and every Michigan score. She even made disparaging remarks about the Michigan marching band when they marched on the field and halftime and took shots at the standout drummer the PA announcer mentioned. It felt like what she said reflects the transparent emotions Ohio State fans have on Michigan. Prior to the kickoff, a female student in front of me offered to switch spots with me in order for me to get a better glimpse of the field. I accepted. She was affable in coming up with that idea. During halftime, she walked past me and accidentally stepped on the shoestring of my low-top black Converse shoe. It remained tied, but a greater portion of my shoestring had contact with the ground. It didn't faze me. The site of the field, especially the famous O symbol on the 50-yard line, is delightful. It provides an unbelievable, surreal reminder that you're at one of the most famous sporting venues in the globe. Also, a must see at the stadium are the displays, reminders of the national championships the Buckeyes have won in their illustrious football history and the names of the great Scarlett and Gray gridiron players. The presence of the highly regarded Ohio State marching band was alluring. Yet, I found their halftime performance to be disappointing. It wasn't as memorable as when they performed Michael Jackson several years ago. I realize their must-see performance is prior to kickoff. But I missed it that day. I purchased a drumstick sandwich and a Diet Coke that came with a 100-year anniversary of The Shoe cup. I found the sandwich to be unique and the cup to be a neat souvenir item. The concession stand seemed to lack a variety of food items. After entering the stadium, it took me a while to figure out which set of stairs to climb. I didn't see available ushers who could help me out. I eventually went to the correct stairwell. In climbing up to my spots, the stairs were very steep. As I was climbing, the students were singing the famous Carmen song. It was incredible that they knew all the lyrics by heart and sang them with heartfelt passion. The students were engrossed the majority of the game. Their infectious enthusiasm was first muted when Michigan scored their first touchdown. Despite the game being in the first half and the students remaining excited, it marked a sign of things to come later that day. When Michigan led 38-23 in the 4th quarter, many of the students left. I'm sure their hopes were rejuvenated later when it was announced the Buckeyes were part of the College Football Playoff. Despite the loss, it felt tremendous being at The Shoe and witnessing a game involving an intense rivalry. I experienced a slice of being a Buckeye. read more

Been to this stadium a bunch of times. Mostly for OSU Games. Last night we went to see Taylor Swift here. What can I say? I had an urge to get White Girl Wasted with a bunch of screaming teenage girls... The venue was good. Drink & Merch lines were ridiculous at this show (more than normal). We were only able to get 2 drinks each due to lines and cutoff time. The only way to get merch was to go out and buy it while Taylor was actually performing. I guess I should have expected all of this at her show. My biggest issue with this venue is that they make it impossible for driving services to pick up and drop off here. read more

It was back to the Shoe for spring football this weekend! Yea!!!! The nice thing about the spring game is that it is general admission and you get to sit wherever you want! My family has season tickets to the regular season and we request the same seats every year, so its nice to sometimes try a different view. Our usual seats are at the very top of C deck (trust me, they are actually great seats!) and we've had seats in both A and B decks which I didn't like so this time we sat in the front row of C deck. It was nice but the bar that keeps you from falling over board also kept getting in the way of the view and I missed having a seat back like our usual seats have. If you're heading to the Shoe for a game, I usually suggest that people look for tickets in C deck. I know that most people want to be closer to the field, but all the seats I've had in A deck have been too close and B deck (since its under the overhang) sometimes has obscured views. If you really want to experience all that is the Horseshoe, grab some seats in C-deck! read more

I came here for the very first time for the Taylor Swift concert. Probably unusual...most have likely been here for an OSU football game! My daughter and I made the best decision to walk here from our B&B. That was great since we noticed cars backed up before and after the concert. (Others at the B&B mentioned that they drove to a concert previously and it took 45 mins. to exit the parking lot afterwards!) We arrived about an hour early, and the line was short and security scans were efficient. Even finding our seats was very easy with the signage. If you buy drinks, purchase them from an individual vendor posted at the entrances. Much faster! So, if you don't want to stand in lines, bring cash and buy from them! As another reviewer stated, the lines were extremely long to buy TS merchandise. They were so long that they made walking around the concourse very difficult. (Might as well buy the merchandise online since you'll get an email with a discount code!) The stadium workers were great! There was plenty of security patrolling. During the concert a young girl stood on the seat/bench in front of me and a security guy made her get down (probably for safety reasons but I appreciated it since she was obstructing my view). The bathrooms were getting pretty bad half way through the concert. Could have used some workers in there cleaning up and replenishing tp. Overall, it is a spectacular facility to see a concert! read more

If you are a Buckeye fan and have seen a game in the 'Shoe you do not need me to describe the feeling that you get the first time you walk into that stadium. It really is breath-taking, especially when you walk in right before the game starts. Startling. The first time I saw the Bucks in the Shoe I was elementary-ish in age and it was the coolest thing I had seen. I remember thinking "this blows a MLB game out of the water" in comparison. The skull session that the matching band has in St. John Arena is so cool! My experience here was great for the most part, everything is easy when it comes to getting into the stadium, finding your seats, and enjoying a game. Pretty good visuals even from far away. I'm kind of in love with football. But it wasn't always that way. Just a short decade ago I was in high school marching band, sliding my trombone to 6th position for C and screaming "D-Fence" based on when the drum section yelled it first. I knew absolutely nothing about football after sitting through over 40 games during my adolescent tenure. I moved on to college and attended a school that had a pretty bad football team. We may have gone above .500 once while I was there. The tickets were free and the games rarely filled up. No reason to learn about football during these four years. I applied to grad school and decided on Ohio State. "You have to go to a game before you graduate," said everyone in the entire state of Ohio. "It's like nothing else you'll ever experience," said the one-legged beggar inside my apartment. Despite their tokens of advice, I never made it to a game my first year at OSU. I may have watched a game or two on TV, but extremely coincidentally, my undergrad decided to become good that year. We're talking REALLY good. As in we ended up winning the National Championship in I-AA football. So I started learning some things as I obsessively followed my alma mater: you have four downs, touchdowns are 6 points, you can go for a 2 point conversion when you're feeling ballsy, and if I were to ever play the sport, I'd want to be a Wide Receiver. I was feeling good. I could roughly follow a game on TV without asking too many questions. With my new found confidence, I purchased tickets for the following season so I could go to some games before I graduated. Then my life changed forever. Going to a game at the Horseshoe is like nothing I've ever experienced. It's single-handedly the greatest sports venue in the country. 105,000 people all wearing scarlet and grey, buckeye necklaces around their chests, knowing exactly when to say certain cheers and sing certain songs. Everyone stays to sing the alma mater (which they knew by heart) and Mr. Sweater Vest himself remains on the field to sing it with us. The exterior of the building has stained glass commemorating the history and folklore of Ohio State football. Buckeye trees are planted around the perimeter. And no matter what happens during the season, the Michigan game is the most important day of the entire year. Everything revolves around this game. The entire campus spends the prior week gearing up for it. And luckily for us, we've won the past 6 games in a row. Going to football games at the Horseshoe helped transform me into the football loving guru I am today. I am very thankful that this concrete structure came into my life. If it weren't for you, I'd have my weekends free and lower blood pressure... and who wants a life like that? read more

aka, the Horseshoe. My husband's grandfather helped build this stadium. It is the Buckeye shrine. Holy. We visited during the summer and managed to wander around inside. We had the place to ourselves. Dad used to sneak in to watch OSU football games as a child and he still talks about those days fondly. I also learned that the Department of Psychology has offices within the stadium. Random. They take their football seriously in Columbus. Though I did not grow up in Columbus or go to OSU, I fell in love with Brutus Buckeye on first sight. I like the nut version vs. the more human looking version that you see now though. read more

I have a long history of experiencing sports stadiums for events that they were not created for (Hockey at Soldier Field, Pearl Jam at Wrigley, lots of other musicians at baseball parks, etc)...and the same goes for OSU. My first OSU Stadium visit was on 5/30/15 for the Rolling Stones Concert. Overall, it was a great experience. The day of the concert the gate admissions staff seemed a bit flustered & discombobulated. That was a bit frustrating, but hey, it's been a few months since football season ended, maybe they are just out of practice? We were early & enjoyed the people watching while standing in line. Overall, this is a great stadium with excellent sight lines. It made an excellent large stadium concert venue, and I hope they start doing more concerts in the future...we would totally drive over for another one. My -1 star is for 2 things: (1)The women's restrooms have black toilet seats & REALLY low lighting. Thus, you can't see how clean said bathroom is. When you have tons of drunk event-goers...that is an extremely gross situation. It took the flashlight on my cell phone & 4 tries before I found a bathroom that wasn't absolutely disgusting. With today's low-energy lighting options, there is NO excuse for that. Ick. (2) The other negative is that there is a Tim Horton's advertising sign in the stadium...but no Tim HortonsTimbits were to be found in the venue, just TH coffee. I have been wondering what establishment is worthy of my 100th review. I do believe that "The Shoe" fits the bill! I love the mid afternoon starts (can't even imagine the night games). Awesome pregame locations around the stadium....do yourself a favor and set the entire day aside to take in the entire scene. Incredible stadium of incredible size (100k plus) and not a bad seat in the house (trust me, I was 5 rows from the top and it still rocked). Tip - remember, this is the NCAA so know booze served, unless you sneak in a flask. Hence the importance of the pregame. read more

I came to Columbus for the Virginia Tech game in September 2014 (as a VT fan) so this was my first trip to the Horseshoe. Man, the stadium did not disappoint. Lane Stadium seats around 66,000 so this was obviously a step-up in terms of capacity. The facility is about as good as it gets. We sat at the very top but were still able to see the entire field well enough to know exactly what was going on at any given moment. The sunset over one part of the stadium right before kickoff didn't hurt either. Concessions were plentiful and easy to get to as well. Can't complain much about this trip at all. The only thing I remember not being a fan of was the staff that worked there seemed to hate their lives. I hope VT and tOSU play again soon so I'll have another chance to come back to this stadium. Note to all visiting teams: prepare yourselves for one of the loudest stadiums in the Big Ten. Note to Conor O.: the fans are only abusive, rude and crass in the parking lot because they've been tailgaiting all day and are probably drunk off their a$$. And yes, if you go to The Shoe as a visiting team's fan...well, enter at your own risk. Great stadium, great experience(s)...if you're tailgating, get there early.
