Worst customer service experience. They do not return calls and when they do the representative is not trained utterly incompetent. I submitted claims for reimbursement for wheelchair, shower chair. From a biller's standpoint, Ohana Health Plan is one of the worst insurance companies to work with. Their claim processing system is flawed. If you have a question, each person you speak to will have a different answer. Their forms to request authorization is also flawed, to their benefit. This is the type of insurance that denies everything, and hopes the physician will not catch it. All of the bad stories you hear about pulling teeth to get claims paid, that would be Ohana. This is a fraudulent company. They call them selves "Ohana Health Plan", they are based in florida and have zero connection to Hawaii. Their real name is WellCare. They duped my father who is Hawaiian, in his 80s and has dementia with a familiar and reassuring name (Ohana) to pick up their health plan. They promised him that it would be free of charge to him but they did not tell him that they would remove his Kaiser Health Plan that he's had his entire life. When I found out, I called them up with my dad to get to the bottom of this, the couldn't tell us how much it would really cost him, could not answer any questions at all. My dad was left without any reliable health insurance for over a month until we could get back onto Kaiser. They also refused to give me a copy of the recorded phone call where they duped my father into signing up. If you love your kupunas, have them stay away from Ohana Health Plan, WellCare or whatever this bogus garbage company calls themselves. This is a rip off and a fraud based in Florida. I'm including photos of their bogus brochures with pictures of local looking people. One woman on the cover even has a plumeria in her ear. Recently moved back to the islands from mainland where I had United Health Care (UHC), and I chose Wellcare Ohana when I got here (UHC is not available here). UHC had its issues, but they are beyond perfect compared to Wellcare. Most of time when you try to call Wellcare, either you can't get through, or they put you in a forever wait state. And if you can get through, the person on the other end usually won't know what you're talking about, let alone help you. And they flat out lie. On their web site it says a benefit is Silver Sneakers, yet Silver Sneakers says I'm not eligible! Wellcare is not even listed on the Silver Sneakers web site as an eligible medicare advantage plan. Now I have to wait until I can choose another company, any company other than Wellcare. read more

First off, I am leaving Ohana one star because I can't leave them zero. Second, I am leaving ALL the previous detailed, helpful comments/warnings five stars for saving me the headache of dealing with this company. My excitement was short-lived, I was smooth talked by reps into thinking I would receive great coverage, especially dental. Low and behold, for the past few days I've been doing my homework and VERY few doctors AND dentist will have anything to do with Ohana. Talk about a huge disappointment. As the previous reviewer indicated, Ohana Health Plan only carries a local business name but is based in Florida. Med-QUEST provide several options for a health plan carrier. I highly recommend NOT selecting Ohana. The customer service representatives do not follow up with changes. When you ask to speak with a supervisor, you will be advised that a call back will take 3 business days. Guess what? No call back. I had called Ohana after nearly 8 weeks of not receiving supplies. Wow! yelp*ers having 81 check-in's? Give me a break! That's a lot for the short amount of time since the date of their reviews. Kind of makes you wonder if they are employees of Ohana Health Plan. Ohana Heath Plan... it's one of two Medicaid insurance providers here in Hawaii, which is the worst of the two. The other, far better provider is "Evercare" by UnitedHealthcare. Yes, Ohana provides something unique that other providers don't, they get your meals canceled so you're not able to eat. Yes, there are some concerns about Ohana payments and services. Ohana is not up to the task of providing Medicaid Insurance to qualified individuals. Ohana Health Plan is not a local company. The employees maybe local, but the truth is...it's a plan offered by WellCare Health Insurance of Arizona, Inc. The name is the only thing local about it. Just like Go! Mokulele Airlines. Somewhat of a local name, but based out of Nevada. So do your research before labeling a company Local. It may be incorporated in the State of Hawaii, but it's really not local. Ohana isn't local, it's part of WellCare Health Plans Inc. a big mainland company, that got busted for one the largest medicaid and medicare scams in US history. This company is really "junk"..I am so upset about the coverage my poor mother is getting ..Long waits on the phone, and they shift you around..My mom spent 45 minutes on the phone for nothing..Then shifted her to another person who put her on hold again. She spent 1 hour and 40 minutes for nothing.. The dental is disgusting..Dentists they provide are far and hard to get to..They only give Seniors $500 a year..!! Shame on Ohana read more

This plan gets one star and that's because I actually got to speak with a customer service rep when I called. She had no idea what she was talking about and was zero help but at least I spoke to an actual person. My daughter who was born earlier this year was auto enrolled into Ohana Health. They didn't cover a single visit of her four visits with her PCP. Her pediatricians office has no problem getting paid from other Quest plans but for some reason Ohana doesn't cover a lot of services. The reason Ohana gave in a letter that was sent to me stated that her PCP didn't obtain prior authorization. Really?!? Prior auth needed for routine well child visits? Where does it say that in the benefits booklet because I don't see it? So I thought, maybe her pediatrician isn't in-network with them...but I don't see why they wouldn't be as they are in-network with HMSA and UHC. The first letter I got stating that services weren't covered was actually for the last visit my daughter had. I called Ohana asking for more information and the woman I spoke to told me it wasn't covered because they needed more info from the doctors office. This was different from the didn't obtain prior auth reason in the letter but I went with it. I work in the health field and understand that billing is tricky so I took her word for it. I then asked her if my daughter's previous visits were covered. She said that information is confidential and she doesn't even have access to it and that I would need to check with the doctors office and find out. I told her I have never experienced that type of confidentiality. By that time I knew she was not the person to talk to and I would just inquire of the medical assistants at my daughter's peds office. I switched my daughter to UHC and we haven't had any problems since. read more

Ohana is currently my retired mom's health plan and it's THE WORST med insurance we've had to deal with. No providers want to accept her as a patient because of it except her PCP who she's been with for many years. Recently, her doctor's office told us they're considering dropping Ohana because they're having a very difficult time collecting payment from them. When we call their customer service line, we either can't get anyone on the phone or we're routed to the toll free mainland number. When we actually get lucky and talk to a live person, they have no clue what they're talking about. When renewal time comes, I'm going to switch her to something else. At least United, which she had previously, was a little better than this and there were more providers that were accepting of it. In hindsight, she should have just stayed with them. read more

Higher ups will thtow you under the bus. The service coordinators filter their calls...they usually have calls go to voicemail. Yes, they all have cell phones but they dont give out their cell numbers and all calls go to a virtual voicemail. They call the virtual voicemail to check messages. they are issued laptops and mobile internet access at all times so no excuse in not checking their emails prompting. They are out ii n the field so they don't take calls.. service coordinators are bunch of grouchy, bittchy people there is. High turn over all the time therefore New hires are ii incompetent. Ohana is not a local company...they deceive you by hiring local people but the CEO and managers are from mainland or transferred from mainland wellcate office in florida where they raided by FBI for medicaid fraud. Although it says it associated with office in Arizona it's not. It's part of wellcare in Florida. Marching orders come from FLorida. They want to disassociate themselves from the corrupt parent wellcare office in tampa. The previous CEO who quit claim thar he was local...yes..he Is a hapa born on Maui but left the states to mve to mainland. The current president of ohana transferred from tampa. I don't know why state gave them the Medicaid contract. Their contract expires every year so you can contact your state representatives to pursuade them to have it not renewed. Look at the waste of Medicaid money they spenf on the new front office at the waterfront tower. Their office rent is high...and they provide free expensive parking for their employees. after reading the bad reviews of others i feel sympathy for them. Most of the good people quit or was fired and works for United health now. I am not sure if United is any better since they are also mainland company with a local name. I would rate OHANA HEALTH PLAN ZERO!!! Their employees are incompetent and DO NOT RETURN CALLS. My brother's PCP told me that the payments SUCKS and that she decided NOT TO ACCEPT OHANA HEALTH PLAN. As of this date, I am having difficulty finding a PCP and another doctor for my brother because the Directory Book Ohana provides the patient is NOT CURRENT. I would call the doctor listed and was advised they are NOT accepting OHANA HEALTH PLAN. I had to call their CUSTOMER SERVICE to provide me names of PCP doctors that are ACCEPTING NEW PATIENTS. Ohana Health Plan also automatically assigned a PCP for my son. I called my son's Service Coordinator and she did now the answer why Ohana assigned him a doctor that we don't want to utilize due to past bad experience. I called and left a voicemail message last month (July 2013) for my son's Service Coordinator to assist him find a PCP because he needs to see an Ear Specialist, and as of this date, she NEVER returned my call. A friend told me few months ago that her TRANSPORTATION to go to the DIALYSIS FACILITY DID NOT SHOW UP because OHANA HEALTH PLAN DID NOT PAY THEM. THIS TYPE OF ACTION IS UNACCEPTABLE, the State of Hawaii, specially the GOVERNOR needs to know. WE, the people of State of Hawaii MUST TAKE ACTION NOW!!! read more

Don't be fooled by the 5-star review- complete with 81 check ins- obviously by a employee/former employee! My child is on disability and has this plan. There are only two QE plan options...this "Ohana" thing and "United". I can't find anybody that takes "Ohana", or accepts new patients. The MAINLAND "Ohana" customer service number (yes, you get put on hold a long time, but unlike the local number, a live person does eventually answer!) gave me a number of a pediatrician in Waipahu. I called many times...no answer! Then a few days later, I get a medical card in the mail with that physician listed as the personal physician. The "Ohana" 'customer service' here is a joke. I will get a voicemail callback from them days later, (as if I'm going to wait DAYS to take my kid for medical attention?!) I've given up trying to call their 'customer service' number and I always end up taking my kid to Pali Momi E.R. because I never know where else to go. When the change period comes around again, I won't hesitate to check the other one (United) hopefully that one won't be as frustrating as "Ohana". read more

If I could've given them zero stars, I would have! This is my first contact with them and they FAILED miserably! I received a letter saying they have been trying to reach me by phone - funny, I have no missed calls or messages from them. Then the letter asks me to call to schedule a Health and Functional Assessment. It asks me to call a toll free number Monday - Friday, 7:45am to 4:30pm HST, to schedule an appointment. Being it's only 3 o'clock, I figure I'd give them a call. Recording tells me their office is closed and to call back during business hours - 7:30 to 5:30! HELLO?!?! It's 3 o'clock on a Thursday and you are closed....WTF?! So I look up their local number and call that. Surprise, surprise - I get a recording that tells me to call the toll-free number! Needless to say, I'll be switching provider real soon! What a great first impression. read more

I received a mailing from Ohana Insurance today.They included a plastic membership card which looks like a real Medicare insurance membership card. they also stated that my membership would become effective at the first of the next month. They are part of Wellcare Insurance of Tampa,FL So much for being a "local" company. The card they sent made it look like they were already my insurance company, yet the sent a form requesting personal information. Red Flag. I suspect that by completing it and returning it to them, I'd be switching companies... Next they are an HMO while United Health Care offers a PPO. I've had United Healthcare for many years and am very satisfied with their service and coverage. What really gripes me about the mailing from Ohana, is that nowhere on the forms do they tell you that the mailing was in fact a solicitation. I'm sure many senior citizens (that's old people to you) wont understand that this is a "churn and burn" scheme. They want you to think you are simply changing your primary care provider (PCP), while in fact you will be changing companies. There is a lot of money to be made from Medicare. Ohana Insurance, I fear is one of the bottom feeders who used deceptive methods to gain membership. read more

This is by far the worst insurance company to deal with from a medical billers stand point. They get nothing resolved. Their customer service is ok but a complete waste of time to call. They shouldn't even have a customer service department since nothing ever gets done. Mangers never return phone call as they state they would. Don't ever get this insurance company as your carrier. I'm sure there are other billers out there that feel the same way. Never have I had to deal with an insurance company such as Ohana. If you have the option to pick another plan, please do so. Obviously their are going to be problems with a new insurance provider other than HMSA Quest? However, I can only speak from my personal experience. Having sustained a Shoulder Injury, I was competently helped along the way by OhanaCare throughout the Process. From providing a PCP, MRI, to authorization for my Surgery, they helped facilitate the Process in a timely manner and kept their word when they said they would either authorize a procedure, or contact the appropriate entities to find out what the hold -up was? Many times it was the PCP providers clerical staff that did not follow up with the referrals or proper protocol that delayed the process. OhanaCare is not responsible for the incompetent behavior of your doctors clerical staff and their lack of urgency in the way they process your paperwork. As far as Ohanacares' financial responsibilities to their creditors, I cannot speak on this, however on an Island dynamic, as a Brand, that wants to encourage and promote support for their business, Ohanacare must work in the areas of customer service, Paying their creditors in a timely manner, follow-up with referrals and authorizations with treating physicians that their clients paperwork is being completed and adressed in a timely and competent manner. Moreover, Having more access to local representatives via phone here in Hawaii would make clients feel more at ease that their concerns are being addressed here with someone that immediately can address their issues. For people in Hawaii, the mindset is that if you have to call a Customer Care person, to them it means calling someone in the Mainland that will not fully relate to them or address their issues which increases the frustration? For these reasons, I implore Ohanacares Leadership to address these problems and to rectify them in a manner that will improve their Brand or these social, financial, and client liabilities will take their tow, and that would be Unfortunate for people who are benefiting from their organization like myself.
