Would give 4.5 stars. Absolutely a 5-star place if you order the right dishes. All of the food is good, but you can immediately tell that the chef's heart lies with the fish. The fish - no matter fried or grilled - was flaky, moist, and undeniably fresh. The service and atmosphere were also top-notch. The woman at the register was friendly and the chef himself brought out samplers of the appetizers for everyone in my family. We definitely felt welcome and left with no doubts that we would be returning ASAP. My Top Picks (from what I've tried so far): Ripple (grilled tilapia on salad mix with sweet dressing, corn, mixed beans, and pico de gallo) - As a health-conscious diner, I was so relieved that a fish and chips place could pull off a good grilled fish. Not only did they pull it off, but I maintain that it was just as good as the fried fish. The fish was flavorful and so moist it almost melted in my mouth. The seasoning was just strong enough not to get lost amongst the Southwestern flavors, even with the pico de gallo (which had just a few pieces of jalapeno). The beans were a mix of chickpeas, kidney beans, and pintos (if I identified my beans correctly). While surprising, the different textures were quite satisfying and helped me leave the meal feeling wholly satisfied. (Not to mention the portion of fish more than generous.) La Ola (fish tacos) - I barely managed to get enough from my fellow diners to sample because no one wanted to give up any of the delicious tacos. The fish was fried differently than the other fried fish in the true "fish and chips" dishes and held up better to the hefty toppings. The only downside was that the tacos were so stuffed they were just about impossible to pick up. I'd suggest doubling the corn tortillas to make them sturdy enough to pick up, otherwise you might have to pull out a fork. A small price to pay for fresh, not oily fish tacos. Other: Tsunami (Classic cod fish and chips) - This item didn't make my top picks simply out of my own personal preferences, but the cod is definitely some of the best fried fish I've ever had. The chef uses a tempura-like batter that is light enough to get all of the good crunch without hiding the flavor of the fish or getting too oily. The batter also stood up well over time and stayed crispy right to the last bite (which might take a while because the serving is one enormous filet). If you want fried fish that won't leave you feeling bloated afterwards, this is your place. My only criticism is the fries. Clearly the chef knows how to work a fryer, but the fries were simply average. They were stuck halfway between a crispy fry and a more rustic hand-cut baked fry. While not bad, they were simply nothing special. They did make a perfectly respectable vehicle for the house sauces. The sauces were good, and the tartar sauce and garlic aioli have lots of potential (just need a little more kick to the flavors, in my opinion). The house dressing (which appears on the salads) is quite enjoyable. Kelvin (fried chicken and fries) - My picky sister ordered this because she doesn't like fish. Would not recommend unless you don't like fish. The batter seemed different from the fish and the frying wasn't as spot-on as with the fish. While it's a perfectly fine dish, if you're eating here you simply have to order fish. It's clearly what the chef knows and loves and the chicken is just there to placate the young and the picky. Appetizers/Chips - As part of the chef's sampler, I also got to try the "Yummy Yummy" (tempura fried mushroom and crab mix), the "Fire Exit" (tempura fried jalapeno and crab mix), and the house made potato chips. I'm not much of a fried food aficionado, so these were enjoyable in small doses. The flavor of the mushroom and crab gets a little lost in the tempura batter, but the jalapenos held up a bit better. The frying mellows the peppers out enough that even the least tolerant eaters can enjoy them. Instead, the "Fire Exit" tastes more like a green bell pepper, though the flavor of the crab is still a little lost. The potato chips were my favorite, but a bit hit-and-miss. The ones that fried to crispy were perfect (not to mention well seasoned), but about half the batch had a slightly greasy, undercooked center to the chip that while not off-putting simply wasn't as enjoyable as their crispy counterpart. With a little more consistency in execution, these could be a dangerously addictive side. Overall, I see a lot of potential. Many five-star level dishes, especially if you respect the chef's interests in what he's cooking (read: order the fish!). If he can improve his frying technique for non-fish items, this will be a hard to beat fish and chips joint all around. We'll absolutely be returning regardless. read more

I wanted this place to be good, but sadly, it wasn't. The only person I saw working there was incredibly busy, so I couldn't ask much about the menu. I figured I might as well try the Signature dish so I ordered the "English Style" Fish and Chips, and at the last minuted decided to add a bowl of the Clam Chowder, served in a bread bowl. Total bill was around $22.00, not cheap but not pricey either. When the order came out, I hadn't realized that I was supposed to get my own plastic ware and napkins, so the "waitress" helped me out. The Fish and Chips were the first to arrive, strange I would have thought the Chowder first, but oh well. The Fish was battered nicely, and was one fillet of cod, that appeared quite large until you cut into it and find that it was cut too thin. This caused it to overcook and basically disappear in the mountain of batter. The flesh was so soft I couldn't get a piece to stay on my fork! The fries were dry and unsalted, which complemented the unsalted batter. I left the fries for the trash. On the counter they have 5 or 6 containers of sauce for the you to try, problem was the two I wanted to try, the Tarter Sauce and ta Garlic Aioli, were empty. I asked the "waitress" and she stated that "Yeah, were trying to make some more"! The Chowder finally arrived as I finished the piece of Cod. It looked good, served in a bread bowl, and was so hot I couldn't eat it! I will call it a Chowder, but it had zero Clam Flavor, and I was only able to find about three small chunks of clam. It had more bacon, potatoes and carrots than anything else, really it wasn't even creamy. By then I was so disappointed I just took the bread bowl and left. it's going to be tough to get me to try it a second time... read more

Brand new and delish! A more updated take on fish n chips. I asked which fish was truly fresh and the owner said he doesn't serve it unless its fresh-and it was! Had the Halibut Fish n Chips. The owner is a sushi man by trade, so the batter is super light, tempura style-and I really liked that rather than the traditional heavy batter. The portion was gigantic, two full fillets, perfectly cooked, golden and crispy. They offer homemade sauces that were tasty, too. (Chef-Please refrigerate the mayo-based ones) And there's plenty of my favorite malt vinegar. He offered samples of the jalapenos, fresh potato chips and sweet potatoes-all were good and fresh. The small menu also has salmon, kids plate, sands and salads/bowl. Even the fruity cucumber water was refreshing! Its a very casual place, order at the counter and choose your seat, with a soda dispenser. I hope he keeps up the quality as he irons out the kinks. I'm going back for sure! read more

This is my new seafood spot! Happened to walk in on a whim just looking for something other than a sandwich or burger. I ordered the cod and chips and my boyfriend had the fish tacos. Before our meals came out we were served complimentary home made sweet potato chips and an appetizer sampler(crab stuffed jalapeño and crab stuffed mushroom). When the food arrived the presentation was beautiful and everything was fresh, down to the French fries. I made mention of how they reminded me of In-N-Out fries lol. And with 9 different sauces all made in-house I was able to give every bite a new exotic twist. My two favorite sauces were the orange sauce and blueberry dream sauce. I recommend this place to anyone with a palate for fresh fish, crab, calamari, etc. The only thing that saddened me was finding out the clam chowder they serve comes in a bread bowl(because I totally would have ordered it! lol) But the menu just says New England clam chowder. I look forward to my next visit and my bread bowl and will definitely be bringing more people. read more

THE BEST!!! My family and I ordered the 3 piece fish and chips, the combo platter, the clam chowder, and the Fireball (I think it was called the Fireball?) It's hard to know where to begin, so I'll just start with my clam chowder. It came in a sourdough bread bowl that was perfection in it's self and the clam chowder was even better. The consistency was was smooth as silk, the clams flavorful and fresh tasting, the veggies bright obviously fresh; all of these flavors came together in a symphony of goodness. Now on to the fish and chips. If you have the title "Fish and Chips" in the name of the restaurant, then you better damn well be able to knock it out of the park with it and Waves again did not disappoint. Starting with the crisp golden brown outside blanket of deep-fried perfection, each bite of the seasoned batter had the right balance of crunch and amount of breading. The treasure of cod held within was of a brilliant and pure white color; this is no exaggeration. Overall, each bite tasted so great that it was hard for me to stop bugging my wife for another bite of her dinner. Finally, the combo we also ordered was both creative and delicious. With it's range of familiarities from homemade potatoe chips to octopus, it was fun to jump from one level of distinct and flavorful goodness to another. It is really easy to miss this hole in the wall neighborhood secret, so keep your eyes open when driving past. Tried this small family restaurant for the first time this evening. It was an excellent experience. I ordered a #1 - the fish and chips. It was delicious! Very fresh fish and perfectly fried. It came with some pickles that were also delicious; and I'm not a huge fan of pickles. The owner was extremely friendly. He provided every person in our party with sample of their house made sweet potato chips and their stuffed mushroom and jalapeños. All three were delicious! I am supper sensitive to spice, but the jalapeño was not hot. It was all the taste without the spice. I then tried the dragon desert. It was very tasty! Also, the house made sauce is great! This was my first visit to Wave Fish & Chips. I found the restaurant clean, well lighted and in good condition, but that is to be expected since the restaurant is brand new. The staff was friendly, quick and attentive. The chalkboard menu has an extensive selection, clearly explained. I chose item #1, the fish and chips. You have a choice between French fries or deep fried chips. I chose the chips. The platter was generous with a large portion of chips and a big filet of fish. Even though my order came quickly, both selections were delivered cold, making each oily and greasy. The batter on the fish made the portion look bigger than it actually was, the fish shrunken inside the batter. The batter was oily, the fish under-done and without firmness. The chips would have been a good choice if they had arrived hot. It's questionable if I will go back. The meal was a disappointment. read more

A friend and I were on our way to the store to pick a few things up we needed to make dinner. We saw the "Oh my cod" sign (LOL) across the street and decided to check this place out instead. We definitely made the right decision! The first thing I noticed was how bright and clean it was. The menu was clear and concise, but had a lot of different, yummy options. We ordered the Fire Bomb as an appetizer, which was fried brussel sprouts with a sweet and spicy sauce on top (so good) and the Tsunami, a large piece of cod filet lightly battered and fried with the perfect amount of seasoning. The fish was perfectly cooked and practically melted in your mouth, the batter was light and crispy as good true English style fish and chips should be! Before we even received our food, the owner brought us a complimentary sample of a fried mushroom and jalapeno both stuffed with crab and hand cut potato chips and a salad with mixed greens, blueberries, strawberries and creamy, citrus, from-scratch dressing. My favorite part was definitely the Shirley Temple option out of the soda machine! Overall my experience here was excellent; can't wait to come back and try something else! read more

My whole family was there a couple of weeks ago during the week for dinner and the owner was there and served us. The owner was super nice and friendly and the place was very clean. We all ordered the fish and chips and the fish was very flaky and fresh and not oily at all. The fries were yummy but because the owner gave us a sample of the chips I think I liked those better. They were light and just the right amount of salt. We also ordered the stuffed crab jalapeno and mushroom and boy those were delish. Really liked this place. The food/fish is actually fresh and it is cooked well. As they are a new business they even had some samples which were great! We had the Tsunami fish and chips (good fresh fish with great batter), the tidal which is grilled salmon (super good, cooked to perfection and well seasoned), the yummy yummy which is very nice and we had a sample of the fire exit which isn't very spicy and uses fresh jalapenos with their seeds removed. The batter is tampura style as far as I can tell, the oil is actually fresh, and things are made to order! Oh and as people have mentioned there is a wide selection of sauces! Ordered fish and chips American and British, slaw, and an order of crab stuffed jalapeños. Smart move to tempt us. Fish was fresh, perfectly cooked and plentiful. Jalapeños were yummy. Oh My Cod! I love The Wave! The first time we went there, I had the Grilled Salmon- so, no, not everything is breaded. We have been back SEVERAL times, and each time the plate has been a work of art! I've been to Wave three or four times now. Their fish and chips meal is excellent and everything else I've tried has been yummy too. Even better the fish is fresh. They serve it with two different batter options. One is panco, the other is a light beer batter. They just recently added zucchini fries to their menu and they are the bomb! Nothing like fried zucchini I've had elsewhere. The batter is very light and they actually look like french fries....delicious! I haven't tried their tacos yet but I hear they are top notch too. They have several unusual apps - even brussel sprouts. Stop in and give them a try, you won't regret it! This is a mom and pop place so they close every day in the afternoon and reopen for dinner so be sure and check the hours. Clean but nothing fancy. We had lunch there today. Walking in....I thought the prices were high. Upon receiving our food, they are right in line with the food quality and portion size. We each had a Tsunami, which is 1 large FRESH fish fillet and homemade french fries and a side salad. My wife thinks this was the most perfectly cooked fish she has ever had. Visited this place this past Monday 8/7 for lunch. The lunch special is $7.95. I pull no punches so let's get to it. The food is not very good. I got the lunch special which was one big piece of fish thrown over a load of fries (they'll bury you with fries). The fish was soggy! I bit it and it fell out of the batter. Good fish when you bite it has a nice crunch and stays together. The fish was not cooked golden brown. I don't know if another fish is used when you order the $12.95 fish n chips meal but the fish for the lunch special is below par. However, the place is cute. I really like the décor. The succulents and cactus adds a nice ambience to this colorful small place. I came there to eat not sit and look @ the place. The gentleman behind the counter was welcoming and even gave me a sample (didn't' know what is was but it was salty as hell). Overall, I would not recommend this place. It's hard to find a good fish n chips outfit. I'd recommend Oceans fish n chips in Elk grove which looks like a sunken old ship on the inside. The fish is GR8! Honestly, they need to stop trying to charge more for a little extra tartar sauce unlike Wave where there is an assortment of condiments you can indulge without the extra charge. How about ordering fish from Oceans in EG then driving to Carmichael to eat it @ Wave. There's an idea mate! read more

Just tried this place, had the fish tacos. Wow. No Mexican place (and believe me I've been to quite a few that are really excellent) has ever served me fish tacos this good - not even close. Obviously it's doubtful any Mexican place would compete with a seafood place in terms of the fish, but the "orange" sauce and garlic aioli sauce here just took the entire fish taco concept to the next level. Another thing - I rarely do takeout, anywhere, let alone for a first trial, and let ALONE if I'm spending ten bucks on three tacos. I'm a real stickler for eating food immediately after it's served. Last minute circumstances arose - I almost aborted the visit, but since I was already in the parking lot I decided to do takeout, also figuring that'd be an extra hard "test" of the food. Ended up having to wait nearly thirty minutes after getting the food to eat it. And it STILL was incredible. Sure the tortillas got a bit soggy and messy, but that was my personal problem, not a problem with the restaurant. I can't wait to try again AT the place. I'm also always impressed when a place of one "genre" can outdo something outside of their own. read more
