Took my wife and daughter to Ofrenda in Cave Creek, Arizona for a Valentine's Day dinner. We had not been there before, but had driven by many times since it had opened, so we decided to make a reservation. I had also read about the restaurant in a local magazine and was struck by the ease of good spirit with which the owners answered the writer's questions. The place looks inviting and tastefully understated from the outside. Inside is a visual treat, decorated nicely to complement the exterior. The ground floor is spacious and airy under a high ceiling, and you'll find a dining area with tables spaced far enough apart so as to not feel cramped, and a nice sized bar. There is a second floor dining area and another bar, attained by staircase from one of two directions. Both the ground and upper floors have adjacent outdoor patio seating. We took a table inside on the upper floor, from which we had an open view of nearly the whole of the place. Service was very friendly all around, and attentive without being obtrusive. The lighting allowed us to easily read the one page menu, from which we chose a variety of dishes to explore a bit from several sections of the menu without actually ordering an entree, though the entrees looked equally inviting. Everything we ordered, five disparate dishes, was a genuine taste sensation, and looked extremely appetizing. I can honestly tell you that we finished everything excepting that of a handful of tasteful and light nacho chips. None of the three of us are gluttons, believe me, so it is significant that we left the restaurant feeling happily satisfied without feeling like we ate, well, five dishes. To me, that's a sign of a very good restaurant. Offer patrons something different, serve it in a timely fashion, design it to look appetizing, and set the hook by giving it good and varied tastes. Ofrenda gave us all of that and more. What's more, you might ask? How about really, really good margaritas? My wife and daughter each had two, trying different flavors. If my wife says it is a very good margarita, then it IS a very good one, trust me! I had a bourbon over ice, flavored with Mexican sugar, an orange peel and bitters, similar to an Old Fashioned. Did I like it? Yes, yes, yes. Tasty and different, very good sipping, it was.
I won't tell you what dishes we ordered, because it doesn't matter. They were all very good. By trying and truly enjoying five dishes, we are pretty sure WHATEVER YOU ORDER will be just as good as what we had. Tell you what, I really "felt" this place. Everything about Ofrenda is designed for the senses. Everything. The designers really did it right. We will most assuredly be returning, frequently. If you have been to Eloté in Sedona, you might look upon Ofrenda, as we do now, as our newly discovered "Eloté south", though the two are not associated. Just a similar good vibe and great food, all around.
Oh, and if you are into agave, Ofrenda has a very interesting "agave library", located in a second-floor turret that will call to you to investigate. I'm not into agave, but this thing looks to be an agave heaven for someone who can appreciate it. read more
