It's one of those it's an office max they have an abundance of office supplies. The shelves were stocked and the store was clean. The employees were nice though. I went mid morning to get some printing done. They have self print capabilities but for bigger projects I use the employee at the print desk. He was very helpful and made sure the job was done correctly for me before he charged. I was able to look things over to make sure I had everything. I needed copies made and a pdf. Having an employee to do that job made my time in the store a breeze so I wasn't standing in the self print area trying to figure it out on my own. If I need printing done this is my go to. read more

My first time coming here was amazing, but this time not quite. The African American lady at the printer's counter with the burgundy and black hair was rude for absolutely no reason and acted as if she didn't want to assist me for something i've been helped with here before. As an African American woman myself it's disappointing to get that kind of service from one of my own. This resulted in me leaving without the paper work i needed. First the print supervisor did not know how to print a PowerPoint deck in the notes view then when a problem arose checking out the store manager, Kevin Toman was rude and disrespectful. The lady that works in the print section is very rude and threatens you to go elsewhere. She purposely worked very slow and yelled at me when I asked if she can bind my books and told me to go somewhere else. Do NOT come here to get your printing needs done! read more

Zero; if only it was possible. AVOID. VISIT A COMPETITOR, OR, ORDER ON LINE FROM A COMPETITOR. IT'S WORTH THE EXTRA TIME. WITHOUT A DOUBT, IT'S WORTH THE EFFORT. Was in this store again today, but I'll never walk through those front doors ever again. Why? Customer service does not exist. And I'm tried of being treated like crap from the employees of this store. Not only do they lack basic customer service skills, the store lacks any kind of adequate inventory to make a purchase. However, one thing this store does have, is a sorry group of employees working the store, with their Asst. Mgr. leading this group on their journey through the world of retail. What do I know about business and customer service? As a small business owner, my business continues grow year-on-year. I've added a sizable number of new employees this year alone, as we continue to expand. As a business owner, with my name on the door, I treat both my employees and customers with the respect they desire. What I also know, if Lamer, the Asst. Mgr. of this store worked for me, he'd be looking for work. His lack of respect for the people who spend money on his store - which provides him his paycheck - would never be tolerated by my management team. He's very unprofessional, rude, obnoxious, condescending, and believes in his small world, being a Asst. Mgr. at Office Max is some type of position of power. The man has a chip on shoulder. And he's not shy in telling to you straight to your face, why the customer is an idiot, and why he so much smarter than any customer that's ever entered his store. Never having to deal with him ever again is reason enough for me to take my business elsewhere, such as to Staples, Amazon, etc.; even if it means the extra effort of ordering on line. Unlike Office Max, I fully understand the value of word of mouth advertising. Avoid this location. Perhaps yet another store closing that hits the bottom line of Office Max Corporate sends the message; we as shoppers of your stores, will not tolerate rude, arrogant, obnoxious employee behavior. To Office Max Corporate...of the 400 stores you plan on closing by the end of CY 2016, here's hoping the Gurnee, IL store is on that list. If we're lucky, Staples will buy the location, and open a store. Maybe if your organization focused on skill set development and training of your store management on customer relationships, your current stock price might be valued just a bit higher than a 10 pack of #2 pencils. read more

Granted this is a chain store and all are just about the same. My review for this place is mainly about the staff. When it comes to the supplies they have on the shelves here, there is nothing special about this place which makes it better than the rest. BUT... I do find the staff here very pleasant to deal with and not just some person behind the counter. Especially when it comes to looking over the higher priced items (desks, computers, printers) I find several of the people here know their stuff... even better than the Blue Box electronic store right next door. It is because of the good staff here that I'll come here instead of an Office Max which is closer to my home. read more

Stopped by for two things: Gift cards and a laptop. Stood around for 15 minutes with no one trying to help me because the laptop I was interested in was not plugged in or was out of batteries so I could not test the audio on it so I gave up and just grabbed the gift cards I wanted. Unfortunately, the cashier just botched an order (shorted a customer out of $30 in change) and I had to wait again. The cashier then said he had to call the credit card company to "authorize" my gift card purchase. I've never had to go through this before, I had my card and ID with me but that was not sufficient. He then told me that the card was not authorized (based on his phone call). He would not even let me slide the card like you do at every other retailer. I have never had this issue before, even when buying comparable amounts of gift cards at other retailers. Given the level of incompetence at this store, I'm just going to have to wait until they go out of business and Staples moves in. Update: I lost use of my credit card for the day until I logged into my credit card account and noticed a fraud alert. I called my credit card company and they said the cashier at Officemax incorrectly entered the credit card data and triggered a fraud alaert. The level of failure here is overwhelming. read more

I've bought two laptops for my daughter from this store; the first one in 2008 and the second one in early 2011. We bought the two year warranty the last time, and a few weeks ago the computer broke down. I looked all over for the original receipt or warranty info, but I couldn't find it. I remember that I had to register the warranty, but I wasn't sure if I had. I called the store at Gurnee, IL and asked what I could do if I didn't have any proof of purchase. He said that there wasn't probably much I could do, but offered to take a look at it to see if it was a simple fix. I brought it in, and he determined that it was probably the motherboard. He gave me the number for the Maxperks warranty service, and told me that they may or may not be able to help me. So I called Maxperks, and they could not find any warranty nor any purchase in 2011. All they saw was the 2008 purchase. Here's the really good part - I had no proof of purchase, and no proof of warranty, but the man on the phone said that they would honor the warranty this once. He made up a fake purchase date, and arranged for the laptop to be serviced. That is phenomenal! I can't imagine many companies doing that, but Officemax did. It further firmed up for me the reason why I always drive right by my local Office Depot to visit Officemax instead. They've always had excellent customer service in the store, and now I know that their warranty service is awesome as well. I'll be buying all of our computers through them now. read more

A week ago I went in to purchase a lot of Post-It tabs, 1 pen, and 1 package of folders. These were business purchases for a law firm that is supposed to be expensed back to the client. Yesterday I will filling out an expense report and noticed that they charged me for 12 Dr. Grip pens at 8.49 each for a total of $101.88. I went in and spoke to the manager and he gave me credit for 11 pens. As I was leaving the store, I looked further down on the receipt and noticed that they had charged me for an additional 8 Dr. Grip pens which cost another $65.12. I went back to talk to the manager and said that it was impossible for the cashier to make a mistake. I asked him if he had a coding error or something like that. He went in the back and came out and said that he saw those items being rung up. I specifically asked him if he saw 20 pens being rung up and he said yes, but it was a bit blurry. I said all I wanted was a corrected receipt so that I could get reimbursement and that I wanted to pay for all the items that I purchased at the correct prices. I told him he could have the first reimbursement back. He then treated me like a thief and a scam artist by saying "I gave you the first refund, but that's all you're going to get out of me." He said this in front of a lot of customers and I was humiliated and embarrassed. My lawyer said to contact the State's Attorneys' Office and the Better Business Bureau which I did. The bottom line, out of a $257.83 purchase, my firm is only going to be able to get reimbursed $42.00. read more
