What a wonderful surprise it was to find this fish and chips heaven including gluten free,…read morepan-fried halibut for my GF intolerant belly. We were famished after a few hours of hiking in Bottle Cove and swimming in Blomidon and still a hour's drive away from Corner Brook. Even though there was long lineup ahead of us this fish fare was well worth the wait. Their customer service was top notch. Smiles and easy, friendly conversation and it was clear why a Corner Brook local had recommended it. Their wedge-sized, fresh-cut French fries were heavenly. Their perfectly seasoned halibut was the best I'd ever tasted and the serving was so big I didn't mind sharing with the kiddos. (Well, maybe I sorta minded ;)) My husband ordered the 2-piece (8oz) cod and chips and he was impressed with the light, perfectly crispy batter coating the freshly cod. My nephew ate the Newfie poutine (ground beef added to it) which got a big thumbs up. Our toddler happily scavenged from all of our plates. The coleslaw could use some improvement since it was obviously a store-bought mix which was too sweet and a tad watery. We had an epic picnic-table view since we were halfway up a steep mountain and overlooking the harbour. Coastline mountains too! This Corner Brook native will be back again next summer and I'll definitely be driving down for this fresh fish.

I had the pan fried cod and my partner ordered the Seafood Chowder. Others ordered fish and chips and fish tacos. The were all excellent. My cod was very fresh with superb spices and a very light batter. In my opinion the prices were fair. We sat on the patio overlooking the sea. Service was friendly and helpful. The music was on theme but not too loud. It can be windy out there so bring a sweater, even on a hot day. The patio seating is on picnic tables. I believe that the owner also offers a service such as tours or something like that but I didn't look into it. We were here at 3:00pm and they had several other customers so that's a good sign. I would definitely recommend this restaurant unless you're in a hurry because good food is never fast.

We decided to drive back out there after going out to Lark Harbour for a day trip the day before, it looked so good. The parking lot was jam packed the first day we drove by, but we got there at an earlier time on our return. We were able to get a great seat on the outdoor covered patio overlooking the water. Saltbox has a nice beer selection, so we ordered a couple of cold ones. Both of us got the fresh lobster roll, too. I got the mashed potatoes as my side, and I believe my wife had the fries with hers. The roll was excellent, and the lobster was just about as fresh as it could be. The wait staff here was on top of everything as well. I would definitely recommend stopping here if you're in the area.

We had completed the tough Green Gardens Trail this morning, including a 15-minute stretch of downpour rain. The first thing that came to mind for me was... fish and chips, of course! That, and a couple of really good local beers on tap. We got a tip from another place in this cool little town that The Merchant was a great place to get a beer. They have a fantastic outdoor deck that sits right on the water, too. This was our second visit, so we sat inside at a table by the windows. The fish and chips here was in the top two we had during our entire trip in western Newfoundland. Very lightly battered, light golden cooked to perfection. After burning all those calories, a (true) pint of Quidi Vidi draft and a big order of fish and chips was on the money. Every one of the wait staff here was extremely nice and friendly. I believe my wife whispered to someone that it was my birthday (which it was), so I got a special little cheesecake in a glass with a candle. Then, the owner came over and encouraged the entire dining room to sing a happy birthday for me. What a treat... couldn't have been a much better place to end the day. The Merchant probably ended up being our favorite place for beers and casual food in Bonne Bay. If you're still hungry, they have a great 1950's themed ice cream parlor in the front. We did not opt for the evening of "getting screeched in" that they hold one night a week in the restaurant, but we did hear from others staying at our inn that it involved a lot of singing and drinking cod liver oil on top of the rum!

We had a reservation for dinner and there was a bit of a line outside (the landing area by the entrance is quite small) of other diners who also have reservations. We were led in soon enough and brought to our table on the upstairs level. We thoroughly enjoyed the homey decor which hasn't changed since our last visit and brought back fond memories. Our server was a young man about to start his freshman year at university this fall. His attitude and work ethic really shows the best of Newfoundland. The food was solid overall. We enjoyed the bacon wrapped scallops, seafood chowder and especially the moose pie. If you just order one thing, GET THE MOOSE PIE! It's hearty with perfectly flakey pie shell and a blast of flavour inside. One disappointment was that they removed their cod tongue dish from their menu. As a uniquely Newfoundland dish, I hope they can bring it back for the next time we return to the island. Overall a wonderful experience and we would definitely come back the next time we visit!

The place was packed at dinner hour and it's better to make reservations. We were seated shortly after arrival with reservations. The young server was very friendly and he provided attentive services througout the meal. The food here had hits and misses. This time we've tried quite some varieties of dishes here, but unfortunately they got rid of our favourite cod tongue from the menu. - The beet salad with goat cheese: it was not bad - Seafood chowder: Sufficient ingredients inside but I personally prefer more creamy and stronger flavour for chowders - Bacon and scallop wrap: one of my favourite dishes here and we fought for it. - Salt cod fish cake: It's signature local food but I didn't enjoy the dish very well. The portion of potatoes definitely overpowered the flavour of fish. - Pan fried cod: it was an okay dish. - Moose pie: I liked the dish. It was so flavourful and the flavour of moose meat mingled really well with the puff pastry. - Creme brulee: The surface was a bit over torched and bitter, yet the rest was so yummy and at the perfect sweetness level. Overall, I enjoyed the relaxing vibe here. For food, I would recommend the moose pie and the bacon scallop wrap.
