Our group of six were promptly greeted and seated. Our drinks order arrived quickly (but tea and…read morecoffee were not available choices, oddly). Five different entrees were ordered so that we could broadly sample the menu. I ordered the Chicken Mushroom Alfredo Penne and was presented with a generous portion that held thin slices of chicken, fresh sautéed mushrooms, and a creamy Alfredo sauce that was a treat to the taste buds. My dessert choice was Gulab Jamun cheesecake, a delightful fusion of traditional Indian flavors with the beloved North American classic cheesecake, garnished with a little bit of fruity gulab jamun syrup and crushed pistachios. All of this tasty goodness cost under $40, plus taxes and tip. My table mates were pleased with their choices, too. One had the Pineapple Honey Burger and she was delighted with her stack of burger and sweet pineapple rounds drizzled in a house bbq sauce, topped by a signature in-house bun. Two others had classic burgers which satisfied their hearty appetites. Another in our group had Jambalaya Fettuccine and enjoyed it so much that the leftovers went home to be enjoyed again. Finally, our lightest eater order the Scallops Aioli as her main, but it got served as an appetizer so the timing request did not get relayed to the kitchen; also, the scallops were over seared, so the texture and the presentation suffered. This was the only dish that did not draw rave reviews. Strums had its soft opening only this weekend, so our group was among the first in Corner Brook to sample its menu. The food is good, the prices are quite reasonable, the servers are attentive, and the hiccups with the tea and coffee will soon be sorted, no doubt. My husband and I are already planning a date night in the very near future. June 2, 2024.

We had completed the tough Green Gardens Trail this morning, including a 15-minute stretch of downpour rain. The first thing that came to mind for me was... fish and chips, of course! That, and a couple of really good local beers on tap. We got a tip from another place in this cool little town that The Merchant was a great place to get a beer. They have a fantastic outdoor deck that sits right on the water, too. This was our second visit, so we sat inside at a table by the windows. The fish and chips here was in the top two we had during our entire trip in western Newfoundland. Very lightly battered, light golden cooked to perfection. After burning all those calories, a (true) pint of Quidi Vidi draft and a big order of fish and chips was on the money. Every one of the wait staff here was extremely nice and friendly. I believe my wife whispered to someone that it was my birthday (which it was), so I got a special little cheesecake in a glass with a candle. Then, the owner came over and encouraged the entire dining room to sing a happy birthday for me. What a treat... couldn't have been a much better place to end the day. The Merchant probably ended up being our favorite place for beers and casual food in Bonne Bay. If you're still hungry, they have a great 1950's themed ice cream parlor in the front. We did not opt for the evening of "getting screeched in" that they hold one night a week in the restaurant, but we did hear from others staying at our inn that it involved a lot of singing and drinking cod liver oil on top of the rum!

We had the mussels as an app, my date the pork tenderloin and for myself the rib eye, with peppercorn sauce and fries. I had a glass if apothic red, a great pairing with my steak. I finished my meal with one of the best partridge berry pies I have ever had. A must try! The ambiance is romantic, quaint and quiet. It's decorated with dark wallpaper and woods, as a previous review stated, it needs a little tlc, but it is by no means run down. The table setting was formal, white table cloth and nice flatware and glassware. All in all I gave it 4 stars due to the fact that it's a bit pricey, the decor is a bit outdated and my date and I felt a bit squished sitting pressed up near the kitchen. A wonderful restaurant for a nice romanic getaway and a great meal!

Being in a Maritime local I decided to go with the Seafood Platter and was thoroughly impressed. People in my dinner party went with the steak and it looked damm good! Selection was a few shrimp, Salmon, Cod, Halibut with some veggies! Cooked quite nicely with a rice pilaff. Setting is in the basement of the Glynmill Hotel. The restaurant has a german or European pub feel to it! Ambiance was comfortable and somewhat quiet. The hotel looks like a German or Swiss hotel that was quite the place 40 - 50 years ago but now needs some love, money and renovations. All in all I would consider this one of the nicer places to eat in Corner Brook! Especially for fine dining!

You can see mountain view from one side of the restaurant and nice view of the bay on the other side. I would suggest to make reservations coz it's super packed during dinner hours. The servers are busy throughout the meal and it's hard to get them. We tried varieties of the food on the menu and some special items not included in the menu. The appetizers are tasty but main is a bit plain to my taste. - Bread and butter: butter is so soft with nice scent of herbs, bread is also tasty. We found that the bread in Newfoundland is generally more sour than average. - Root vegetable salad: Very creative dish. Varieties of veggie include squash and carrot are cut into nice thin pieces. Burnt almond and wild rice were the highlight of the dish. - Mushroom on bread ($22, not on the menu): I really enjoyed the creamy flavour of the mushroom. - Cumen crusted lamb leg with couscous: it was not bad. The meat itself doesn't have much flavour but it goes really well with the sweet sauce. - Cod with sun dried tomatoes: The fish is fresh but overcooked. - Halibut and scallop ($52, not on the menu): Again, everything is fresh but the fish is overcooked and flavoureless. In general, the restaurant has nice dining environment with average service and amazing appetizer dishes. My favourite dish here was the bread and the mushroom on toast.

What a wonderful surprise it was to find this fish and chips heaven including gluten free,…read morepan-fried halibut for my GF intolerant belly. We were famished after a few hours of hiking in Bottle Cove and swimming in Blomidon and still a hour's drive away from Corner Brook. Even though there was long lineup ahead of us this fish fare was well worth the wait. Their customer service was top notch. Smiles and easy, friendly conversation and it was clear why a Corner Brook local had recommended it. Their wedge-sized, fresh-cut French fries were heavenly. Their perfectly seasoned halibut was the best I'd ever tasted and the serving was so big I didn't mind sharing with the kiddos. (Well, maybe I sorta minded ;)) My husband ordered the 2-piece (8oz) cod and chips and he was impressed with the light, perfectly crispy batter coating the freshly cod. My nephew ate the Newfie poutine (ground beef added to it) which got a big thumbs up. Our toddler happily scavenged from all of our plates. The coleslaw could use some improvement since it was obviously a store-bought mix which was too sweet and a tad watery. We had an epic picnic-table view since we were halfway up a steep mountain and overlooking the harbour. Coastline mountains too! This Corner Brook native will be back again next summer and I'll definitely be driving down for this fresh fish.
