We had dinner at the Old Loft during our two days in Bonne Bay. I believe this place has been around for quite some time. The first floor is a really interesting gift shop that has just about everything you could imagine, including ice cream. The restaurant is upstairs, and they do have a small area for outdoor dining. We ate inside at a table by the windows overlooking the bay. The whole interior of this very old building is wood, including seats made out of old barrels. What a great touch! The wait staff was on top of everything, too. We completely underestimated the size of the entrees, as both of us ordered the pan-fried halibut. We both got a monster-size piece of fresh halibut. Both came with a mountain of steamed carrots, some broccoli, and we opted for baked potatoes. Everything here was great, and they did have a fairly good drink menu. We had a couple of the Quidi Vidi Iceberg beers in the cool blue bottles. If you're looking for a good meal to get your money's worth, Old Loft is a great choice. read more

Homemade meals at their yummiest! My husband and I really enjoyed our meal at the Old Loft. The Old Loft is located in Woody's Point, a small town surrounded by Gros Morne National Park, in Newfoundland. We were camping in Norris Point and decided to hike the Tablelands on the other side of Bonne Bay. Driving there took us past Woody Point, so we stopped for lunch. ( You can also take a water taxi from Norris Point to Woody Point and back.) The Old Loft Restaurant is the rope loft of an old restored fishing shed. It's a charming, rustic spot. The dining area is half of the loft, and there are locally made handcrafts on display in the other half. Downstairs, there are more souvenirs and items made by local craftspeople, as well as baked goods for sale. My only two complaints about the restaurant are this: one, there are only windows on the ends, so it's a bit on the dark side (the craft areas are bright). Two, the chairs, made out of barrels, are cute but not overly comfortable. When we walked in, there was a mix of other tourists and locals. Seeing locals is usually a good sign! On to the food. We both had hot turkey sandwiches with fries. I also had dressing and gravy on my fries, a Newfoundland favourite. We split a basket of onion rings. The onion rings were hot, light, crispy, and huge! They were like doughnuts in size, and delicious. Wish I had some now... The fries were hand-cut and cooked just right. The turkey sandwich was open-faced; the turkey piled on top of a thick, delicious slice of homemade bread. Yum! The turkey was topped with gravy and traditional Newfoundland dressing. I loved it. My husband loved his, too, except for the dressing. The dressing was loose breadcrumbs, mixed with melted butter, and flavoured with onion and summer savoury. Not what we're used to, and he doesn't like surprises. Portions are large so no way we could manage dessert! Too bad, I'm sure it was good. Finally, my beverage of choice when eating out is iced tea. For me, a litmus test of a good, casual restaurant is whether or not they make their own iced tea, or just fob off a commercial can or fountain drink on me. Seriously, it's not hard to make iced tea! At minimum, you can brew strong tea, pour it over ice in a glass, and serve the glass with sugar & lemon wedge on the side. It's sooo much better than pre-made. Really. A lot better. A lot. I'm happy to report that the Old Loft not only makes their own, but it was the best I've had dining out: slightly sweet and lemony tart. Yum. Our waitress, the only one working, was friendly, attentive, and happy to join me in a little good-natured ribbing directed at my husband. I may never get back to Newfoundland, but if you go, and you're in the area, I recommend you try the Old Loft. read more

Dish: Calamari Strips Overall: 4/5 Recommend: Yes You can tell you're in a tourist restaurant when the folk art, scenic photos and quilts that line the walls, are all for sale. As a rule I like to "eat where the locals eat". Sometimes, though, you need to suck it up and recognize that "the locals, pack a lunch". The good news is that once in a while you choose a place like The Old Loft Restaurant, where you get a decent meal and they (appear to) charge you an appropriate amount. ... Value: 5/5 Not fancy, but ok. Priced exactly right for what it is. First timer: 3/5 You're not going to get the "full Calamari experience". It plays as simply (chewy) battered seafood. The best salad on our trip with fresh berries and greens! A good salad was hard to find during our trip to Newfoundland and Laborador The restaurant is upstairs adjacent to a local pub. We sat outside on the balcony and saw some Minky whales which made our experience so much more fun. We had the moose pie, partridge berry pie and cod au gratin ... all well done. It was one of a few open in late Sept but we were very pleased. We tried the moose pie and fish and chips. The fish there is only pan fried but was nicely done. The moose pie tasted a lot like beef stew pie but the crust was the best we have had in NL. Had it not been for all those fries, we might have had dessert, just for the pie crust! People near us were raving over the partridge berry pie. The waitress said a 72 yr old woman in town makes the pies for them. The view is pretty good from two tables but pretty much nonexistent from any other. On a warm day, one might like to eat on the balcony but it was pretty cool the day we were there. All food service is upstairs, no handicapped access. Restrooms downstairs. This is in no way a French restaurant. It is a local cuisine place with a number of NL dishes, like brewis (mashed wet dry tack bread mixed with steamed cod), poutine (cheese, etc on fries). You can get gravy on your fries also. There is other fresh seafood in season The fishing village is very quaint, right on a cove in Gros Morne National Park, a stone's throw from the Discovery Center. We liked The Old Loft a lot more than the Seaside Restaurant at Trout River, a few miles away. read more

Love this place. It's great food, great service and the atmosphere can't be beat. Worth the trip to Woody Point for sure! If the weather is nice I like to sit outside on the back deck overlooking the water. The cod is the best I've ever had. Highly recommended. read more

This restaurant was fantastic! We stayed in Woody Point for 4 days and ate there 4 times. We could not get enough of their delicious food and great service. Our favourite dishes were for lunch their seafood lasagna and for dinner steak and Caesar salad. Also worth mentioning was their delicious homemade ice tea. read more

The upstairs restaurant is located on the second floor of the building, along with a gift shop selling local crafts and goodies. The dining area was unique with chairs made from old barrels, the menu featured traditional Newfoundland meals (and quite a lot of cod), which was nice to have on the cold foggy day we spent at Gros Morne Park. read more

Do not miss the chance to eat here. The cod au gratin was wonderful, flavorful and not overly cheesy. Other dishes were tempting but I limit myself to one lunch a day. read more
