Great food, friendly staff, and a beautiful and convenient location! We go out of our way to make sure we swing by and visit our friends at OTG whenever we're in the general area. Food is fresh which means it's not always ready in a flash. A good sign of you ask me. We're thankful for this establishment and looking forward to continuing to visit it often.

This is a delightful place to stop off for a bite and glass of wine after hiking in the nearby National Park. Tons of great dishes including some (very good!) Asian ones such as a Thai curry and Banh Mi sandwich. The ingredients are all fresh, service is engaging and attentive, and there are a lot of cool niche products (nuts, ciders, chips) as well as nick knacks and even art and photography for sale. Picnic tables with outdoor dining next to a stream as well. Very relaxing lunch here. Two Thumbs Up!

Omg. My friends and I came here after a hike and it was an amazing experience. The breakfasts and lunch are super good, they have an American eclectic menu as my friend described it which is nice since there's something for everyone. Very fresh food with moderate portions, and the interior is quite nice too. Honestly the restaurant is a bit small, think there are only about 7 tables inside and a couple outside, so come early if you want to sit in. Cute little store in the back and a bunch of freshly baked goods and snacks to choose from. Good coffee menu too.

Off The Grid is located on U.S. 211 - a bit west of the main "downtown" of Sperryville. It sits right on the banks of the Thornton River as it comes gurgling out of Shenandoah National Park. Stopped in on a Sunday for Brunch. Was pleased to see they offer Lox & Bagel! So I ordered that! My friend ordered the same thing. They have an interesting, eclectic menu. The special of the day was Gumbo - and I was sorely tested - I wanted both the Gumbo and the Lox & Bagel. So next time, if it's available - it'll be Gumbo time! I also ordered water - they have water in a large dispenser that you can serve yourself - or if you want water to go - they sell water in these environmentally friendly plant-based containers - which is what I opted for. There are a few tables inside, we sat at one and devoured our Lox & Bagel. Very tasty! Ivan is the manager - if he is in - say hello to him! #OffTheGrid

We've eaten here with our kids while we stay in Sperryville a few times now. It's got very good food, with a great outdoor seating area, and a working farm that you can explore with your kids if you want to see bee hives, goats, chickens and other things. With any given piece, it might be hard to justify the 5-star rating, but all together it definitely takes it over the top. As far as the food goes, we've worked our way thought the Penang curry, bahn mi, fig and chicken sandwich, and the PB&J sandwich for the kids. The bahn mi and curry were both very good, which makes me think the Asian-inspired dishes may be the way to go in general. The pickled veggies and meat on bahn mi were both great. The only complaint is that there could maybe be more filling/toppings for the break. The curry was excellent both times I had it. The chicken in it was nothing to write home about, but the overall flavors with the rice work. The PB&J sandwiches are surprisingly good. They're served on thick-sliced, amazing bread and are good enough that I kind of looked forward to the kids not finishing them. Beyond the food, the outdoor seating sits on a gurgling stream with fantastic trees and relaxing views. Across the stream is a working farm with goats, chickens, greenhouses, gardens, bee hives, and a solar farm that's worth checking out. That means we could take our kids for stroll to see some animals and other things before and after the meal turning a meal into a reasonably good outing. Be sure to ask if they can help you turn off the electric fences around the chickens and goats if you want to pet them. Other than that, we'd probably skip the coffee unless you need the caffeine. The macchiato wasn't any better than you'd expect from an automatic espresso machine you could have at home.

This was a great stop after our 9 mile hike at Old Rag Trail. The owner even let us get coffee a few minutes before they opened before our hike! The food was incredibly fresh, especially the eggs which come from their chickens in the back farm. The set up was very cute, and it was nice seeing the kitchen in front where you can see them cooking! Great service and I appreciate how environmentally friendly they are- they even used uncooked fettuccine noodles as a coffee stirrer instead of a plastic straw! Genius! Also free coffee refills! So be sure to try this place if you are near Shenandoah! :)

Off the grid has a great back yard area with tables and benches. If the weather allows it, I definitely suggest sitting outside. The menu has great vegetarian options. My Ramen salad had a delicious sauce with a hint of spice. Great meal after a hike in Shenandoah

KenScale: 8.25/10 Visits: October 2025…read more Since moving to the DC metro area with my wife Jun a few years ago, one of our favorite fall activities has been to drive to Shenandoah National Park to enjoy the fall foliage. We made the same trip recently but it turned out to be a bust. Due to an unusually warm fall, the leaves have not turned color that much, and also with the government shutdown (meaning the park office could not collect entrance fees), the crowd was absolutely packed around hiking trails, with cars parked all over the roads where they were not supposed to be. After a quick hike to the Stony Mountain trail, Jun and I decided to call it a day and head over to get dinner at Sumac, a trailer operation inside Pen Druid Brewing. Little did we know that our experience at Sumac would turn out to the highlight of our trip! Run by chef Dan Gleason and his wife Abigail, Sumac has both a la carte options and a tasting menu at a reasonable $95 per person. If you want to explore the full range of dishes from the trailer, I highly recommend going with the latter. The food comes out in paper plates and you get plastic utensils, but there is nothing modest about the high level of execution displayed by the kitchen, using local ingredients from rural Virginia in a very skillful manner. A starter dish of tomatoes (playfully named Tomatoes' Last Waltz with chewy millets) was a nice surprise, and the grilled eggplant with pepper mayo and XO sauce was one of my favorite dishes from the tasting menu with its smoky flavor and texture that was spot-on. Who knew that a humble combination of napa cabbage, butternut squash and ricotta could create such a wonderful effect together? I certainly gained a renewed appreciation for the delightfully sweet butternut squash from the dish. Picanha steak with Amarosa potato fingerlings as well as black cod with lobster sherry sauce also wouldn't have felt out of place at other high-end restaurants. The desserts from the tasting menu were even more memorable. I was very fond of the pear cake with bay leaf cream (and pear is not even one of my favorite fruits), while Jun savored the acorn squash sundae with apple cider that more or less perfectly captured the fall flavor. If you are inclined to try the tasting menu, advance ticket sales last until the night of Wednesday for the upcoming weekend from Friday through Sunday so definitely plan ahead. You can complement your meal with beer, cider or natural wine options coming from Pen Druid Brewing; a glass of cider that I ordered turned out to be quite a nice pairing to the food. You can either grab an outdoor table behind the kitchen trailer or an indoor table inside the brewery and a staff member will deliver the dishes to you. Sumac was one of the most pleasant surprises of the year, and Jun and I are very excited to go back for a constantly changing seasonal menu for more. Who knew that you would find one of the most delicious food trailers in the Virginia countryside?

We stopped in to try a few items and were blown away by taste and texture of everything. As avid cookers and bakers at home, it takes a lot to impress us, and this bakeshop certainly did. And to address the 1 start review I see from someone, most bakeries have been around the $8-$15 price range for fresh loaves of bread for some time now. Considering this is still within the "DC" area I'd say that's average pricing. No prices on the website? --a lot of places don't list prices because they fluctuate too much. As a family run business, they seem focused more on the quality of their products rather than updating their website every week. 1 start seems completely inappropriate... how was the food though, reviewer?

Bacon and cheddar scone ($6.25) - real chunks of bacon (not just bacon bits) and delicious cheddar cheese infused into this biscuit/scone. It's a bit flakey while also having a soft + fluffy interior. flavorwise, the bacon, cheese, and butter-y scone blends so nicely together. Burbon pecan scone ($5) - delicious scone base mixed with some currants and big chunks of pecans topped with a burbon glaze. What's not to love? Soft, buttery, flakey, and not too sweet. And the burbon glaze adds a hearty and deep flavor that complements the pecan/scone nicely. I would come back for this!! Whiskey and rye cookie ($4.25) - 80% chocolate chunks mixed with a rustic cookie base. You can really taste the whiskey in the cookie dough. It's a fun cookie! We were told there was a 10-15 minute wait, but if we sat at the empty bar we would have to wait the same amount of time because food was behind. Not sure how that works but okay. They have a nice text system for their waitlist, so we used that. We waited in the back room, which had a few tables, a large stage, a pool table, and a jukebox. It was a fun vibe! Once we sat, we both got the cheeseburger- there's only one choice for a meat burger. It took a while to come out. The burger was pretty average. The server described it as a smash burger even though it didn't say that on the menu. The patties were a little thin, with standard toppings on a sesame seed bun. The fries were thin and nothing special. My friend called it a slightly upgraded McDonald's. Again, nothing bad but nothing special. I wouldn't come back, but there aren't many other options in Sperryville.
