We had done one of their escape rooms before and was wowed by their game Masters and quality of the escape room so here we are again. This time tackling Excalibur. This two hour, full-emersion, four person recommended but could be with as many people as you want escape room was pretty dang spectacular. Lots of quality detail, time, and effort went into this room and you can definitely tell and feel it. Word from our game master was that four more escape rooms (originations from Los Angeles) will be recreated in the Off The Couch HQ within the next four months. Excited! I've done a lot of escape rooms over the last six or so years and some of the best ones I have ever done have been at Off The Couch. From Conspiracy (old location - RIP) to the growing narratives of their multi room adventures. Each of the rooms has an interesting and reasonable intent to their details. For instance, The Apartment isn't just a good room...it also pretty much felt like an apartment. I suspect if they ventured out to doing something on a train, they would literally have a rail car. Thats the kind of people that run these rooms. Its that kind of detail that always makes me excited to come back and try new ones. The OTC team also doesn't sit on their haunches when it comes to improving and adding new rooms. I am really excited to see what happens at their new(ish) location, and make it a point to fly down when new rooms are available (within reason - everything is expensive right now :)). Also the GMs and owner are often willing to do detailed discussions of the rooms afterwards, and are welcoming and friendly. Some of the rooms nowadays in places I have been up in the PNW just give you a laminated sheet of boilerplate story that means nothing, and do no acting to immerse you. That wasn't my experience at OTC. They were fun and inviting people to be around. I would highly recommend checking them out if you want an enjoyable escape room experience and if you are an avid fan of escape rooms they are worth being a destination. read more

We went there twice, driving for over half an hour each time, but both times my plans got canceled. The first time, the owner double-booked the reservation and blamed us for not checking our confirmation email, even though we called weeks ahead and the staff confirmed our reservation over the phone. The second time, there was a power outage, and we were informed after we arrived Fremont. I was so lucky to get the 10:30 booking today when I called in yesterday. The owner told me that it's their soft opening now and they had limited booking time, so I was excited to secure a time slot and get to try the new game. As for now, they have 2 chapters for this escape room and are building chapter 3 which should be ready pretty soon. They are still renovating the building so some spaces are empty, but when we walk into the escape room it was very interesting and impressive. My family and friends had a wonderful time. The owner is very passionate about the game and explained their plans for the escape room to us. As for the game, it is a good balance of fun and teamwork - my nephew said it was a captivating story and employees are always there to help. I only booked an hour for our event so we are 60% done with Chapter 1. They will save our progress and we can return to finish the game next time. After playing their three Pandorum games back-to-black last weekend, I have now played all six of their games!! I've played close to 200 escape rooms and what makes OTC special is not only the quality of their games, but the whole customer experience from the moment you enter their space. The owner, Nick, is incredibly passionate about escape rooms and I can tell how much effort was put into designing and building each game. I always enjoy chatting with him before, after, and during the games!! The games are immersive, high-tech and have a great story! This is especially true for Excalibur and the Pandorum games. I would say these games are also on the more difficult end of the spectrum but they do offer unlimited hints. Even though we played 4 hours of Pandorum back to back, time flew by because we were having so much fun!! Just an FYI - there are some scary/surprising parts in Pandorum so be prepared!! such a realistic and interactive escape room. we've only completed chapter one so far, but i personally haven't been able to stop thinking about our experience for a week now. it's such a well made escape room that i probably wouldn't know what to do after we eventually complete all 12 chapters (we intend to and we will). this place deserves more recognition though, came across this escape room on accident a few times but didn't realize how interactive it is. the coolest difference in this escape room is that the decisions you make in each chapter, affects you in other chapters.. including alternate endings.. that is extremely cool. i can't can't can't wait to do chapters 2 and beyond!! read more

We ran over by about 10 minutes, but we completed it. There was never any pressure to rush by the hosts. The gameplay and clues are incredibly well thought out and logical, and really worked well with the back story. We were party of seven and after being advised that smaller groups would work better, we split into two groups to play both Inheritance and Conspiracy. Updating this review after having done over 100 additional rooms since my last review. Off the Couch is still one of the companies I'd recommend locals check out, and the owner is extremely ambitious with some exciting projects coming down the pipeline. ---Excalibur--- 4 out of 5. An above average game that's solid in multiple dimensions, and stands out from a standard room due to its polish, progression, and puzzles. Set - Diverse sets with excellent use of lighting. Medieval-themed rooms are perhaps overdone at this point, but Excalibur is the best I've seen so far. The size of the physical space was substantial, the props were high quality, and each room felt like a distinct part of the castle. Story - Excalibur successfully creates the adventuring feel. At the start of the game, we got costumes, roles, and a beautiful notebook. While these weren't necessarily super significant within the game, I thought they were a nice touch. I think one area of potential improvement is integration of the story with the game as a whole, particularly with the puzzles. While the puzzles were all on-theme (more on puzzles below), the story part of the game was isolated from them. The story elements also required more gamemaster intervention than would be ideal, and didn't quite flow seamlessly. I think people who like medieval fantasy in general will appreciate the story here, but there isn't much that's unique. Puzzles - Above average puzzles for sure. The puzzles were well-integrated into the set and story, and many of them had something that I hadn't seen before. Only 2 or so traditional locks in this room, and the automated tech was on point. The puzzles were multi-layered and on the challenging side, which I appreciated. I liked that Excalibur was really about enjoying the experience, as it's a 2-hour room and the owner encourages taking your time rather than trying to set records. As a group of 5 with a solid amount of experience, we escaped in 1 hour and 40 minutes with 1 hint. ---Conspiracy--- 3 out of 5. My opinion of this room has gone down a bit, since it doesn't stand out from a standard room and the set was sparse and not particularly exciting. Set - It looked kind of like an underground government bunker, but nothing really stood out about this set. The decorations and furniture were pretty basic. This was probably a below average set. Story - Pretty much none. Maybe some if you squint. You can definitely see some of the conspiracy theory elements floating around, but I wouldn't really call it a story. Puzzles - Solid, probably above average. Most of the puzzle elements are things you might find in other rooms, but they tended to be on the slightly more challenging side. ---Inheritance--- 3 out of 5. My opinion of this room has stayed the same, but it falls a tier in rating since it doesn't stand out from a standard escape room. Set - Some nice set pieces, though it annoyed me that there were a tad too many red herrings lying around. Generic antique set with wood finishing, which is pretty but not unique. Story - There wasn't really any story. Puzzles - These were on the easy side, and nothing that really stands out from a standard room. What do you do when the comedy show that you had tickets for cancels at the last minute... well you use Yelp and see what else you could do at 10 pm and pray. Inheritance was my first escape room ever and it remains the most memorable one. I've since done 8 now and this room was still among my top 2. Conspiracy Theory which I did later with friends was also very good, but Inheritance was more enjoyable for the kind of puzzles I did. Conspiracy Theory really benefits from a group of 3 or more. Talked with the owner for a bit and he's really devoted. I think he has done over 300 escape rooms himself so he takes his craft seriously which shows. I can't say enough about this place. I've recommended over a dozen people to them now and they all loved this place too. Definitely consider Inheritance as a high recommendation for first timers. Man is it hard for a beginner but so full of puzzles that are so diverse and capture the essence of escape room puzzles. Man, there were some puzzles that I still think are the best I've ever seen in inheritance for wow factor. I'm putting off Excaliber as a room to do when I've got a good handful of rooms under my belt. I fully expect it to be a great experience.. so I'm trying to get some good experiences before going into that one. Funny how I expect this two hour room as the pinnacle of escape rooms to do. I'm not particularly fond of escape rooms, but I do enjoy visiting them with my friends. Over the years I've traveled to at least 10 different escape room locations in various countries. However, among all the escape rooms I've been to, the experience that Off The Couch provides is easily the most memorable and exhilarating. Over the last couple days, my friends and I participated in all 3 parts of Pandorum. The employees are enthusiastic, friendly, and extremely knowledgeable. I had an exceptional time speaking with them. In particular, the Game Master that attended to me and my friends had a great personality. He was extremely easy to get along with, and his infectious enthusiasm helped create an immersive experience that had me completely forgetting the fact that I was just playing a game. The Escape Rooms themselves were extremely clever and never felt boring or tedious. The entire experience was wholly enjoyable and have set a high standard in my eyes for what escape rooms should be, and should strive to be. Despite all the superlatives I'm using to describe them, all of this praise is wholly warranted. If seeing is believing, I can only encourage you to go and see for yourself. read more

It's clear the owner(s)/designer(s) love escape rooms, and care about pushing the envelope in all aspects (puzzle design, tech, thematic integrity, scenic painting, immersion, story etc.). Everything pointed to the flawless execution of designing a top-tier gen 2 room (we did the 2-hour Excalibur themed room). I don't want to give anything away about the experience, but I never once felt pulled out of the room by a directional lock, "don't touch" sticker, laminated placard, or a big LED screen with a timer on it that talks to me. There were characters for players to own that actually mattered. There was a story arc that actually progressed as you advanced in the room. It was incredible. This is what escape rooms should be, and I can't wait to go back for the others. 2 hours may seem like a long time, but it actually flew by because of how fun and immersive the room was. Our party of six tried Inheritance and finished in 27 minutes without hints. The ending was abrupt and anticlimactic; I felt like we were just getting started. Two of the puzzles revealed their secrets before we solved them, which was pretty disappointing (a third puzzle was a little delayed in responding but not a big deal). Overall, the puzzles were decent and the backstory to the room was fun. I just wish there were some more puzzles and that there weren't any mechanical failures because you lose the satisfaction of solving a puzzle when it unlocks prematurely. OTC does advertise this as its easiest room so I think it's good for beginners. All the staff were super nice and informative, and our game master did a great job introducing the room beforehand and reviewing it after. The lobby/waiting area is amazing: puzzles to solve, cornhole, giant Jenga, foosball, board games, and more. Plenty to occupy oneself while waiting. Just wish the escape room experience could have been better. read more

I did Conspiracy with a group of 4, and this was escape room #29 for me overall. Cost: $30/person even. This was refreshing because I've gotten used to processing fees from other places making the total something random like $33.91. Private bookings! I had one bad experience elsewhere with random people in our group, so I never want to risk that again. Really spacious and awesomely decorated lobby. Our game master/the art director was cool too. They offer story mode and challenge mode. Story mode has unlimited hints and will try to keep you on track/pace. Challenge mode allows 3 hints only. We went for story mode. We chose this over Inheritance because it was harder, and we like a challenge. And we were definitely challenged because we were not close to finishing on time. We did receive more guidance and some straight up answers in the end so we could finish everything. After you do a number of rooms, it just takes more to feel that wow factor. I definitely want to give Excalibur a try sometime as that seems to be the one to do here. Unfortunately, it wasn't available for times that worked for our schedule but we also booked relatively last minute. read more

I wanted to wait until we completed all of the rooms to write a review but seeing as we have to wait too more weeks until we do Excalibur, I'll just go ahead and write this now. My husband and I really enjoy escape rooms -- to the point where we did 6 on our honeymoon in Oahu and Portland. I'll have to say that Off The Couch quite frankly ruined us for other escape rooms because it's just THAT good. Definitely one of the few escape room locations and staff that actually tie the room and puzzles together SO well. The staff is great! Incredibly friendly and really take on the role/character of whatever room you decide to do (we really do recommend all of them). The lobby/waiting area is filled with games (board games, video games, large connect four and cornhole) of all sorts for you to play while you wait. Now, most of the time, people come for their reserved game, finish their room, and leave. For us? We enjoyed the first room so much, we ended up booking a second room right after. So that lobby definitely came in handy for us ^_^ Nick, one of the owners, was very friendly and gave us a tour while we waited and told us his plans to grow the place (they literally have the entire third floor of the building). I love that they have AC on in the rooms (is this really too much to ask when you're sweating profusely under pressure to solve puzzles?) and we love that each room you book is private. We have one room left and we're already anticipating whatever room they create next. They really do leaving you craving for more. Holy mother of god this place is the best thing that's ever happened in the world of escape rooms. The room we did, EXCALIBUR, was recommended by my sister's friend and I've been telling everybody and their mothers to check this place out ever since I played this room. I've done quite a few escape games and nothing can compare to Excalibur. Ok, before getting into the details of the room, let me talk about a few details. The guide was awesome - he got to know all of us before we even started the game and went over the story, rules, assigned roles, etc. Also, this is totally random, but the toilet paper in the restrooms were the highest quality I've ever seen in any establishment (very soft and thick). The lobby is equipped with tons of games to play while waiting as well. What I love about Off The Couch is that their games are private, meaning they will not put randoms in your game to fill up the open spaces, regardless of how many are in your party. Don't get me wrong, I'm friendly and all, but when it comes to escape rooms, I don't care who you are, I'm NOT about to be listening to anyone I don't know and nobody is going be telling me what to do. Ok, onto the game. Excalibur is a special TWO HOUR escape room ($65 per person). I wasn't sure how I'd feel about me being in a state of extreme anxiety and panic for over an hour, but it was GREAT. If you are new to escape rooms, this room is going to be impossible for you and they may likely even turn you away if no one in your party has done them before, as they have done in the past. The amount of dedication and time that went into creating a room of this quality clearly shows - the elaborate decor makes you feel like you are really on the grounds of an abandoned castle. The sound and lighting effects were freaking awesome, there were REAL costumes and props to use. I don't want to give too much away, but trust me, just do yourself a favor and book this room for your group. I have a pretty clever group of friends and we managed to escape with 11 minutes left on the clock. Quick tip for EXCALIBUR room: when they ask if you want to be the notetaker, JUST SAY YES before any of your friends do, you'll see why. Can't wait to check out the other rooms here! read more

Excalibur is the only 2 hour escape room I've ever played, our amazing game master was with us every step of the way, the set design was epic, and the game was really fun. Conspiracy has a more simple set design with a focus on really great puzzles that made you think, Conspiracy had my favorite puzzles, I really liked them. Then Inheritance has such a cute set design with pretty great puzzles as well. You really can't go wrong at Off The Couch. So while we waited, there were these really fun games to play -- 1000's of videos on big screen TVs from new to dating back to the 80's, corn hole, giant connect 4, puzzles, etc. Our 5 teen boys did the Conspiracy room and LOVED IT! Off The Couch was my first escape room experience. The event was organized by my company as a team outing and was an awesome introduction to escape rooms. They have a number of different themed rooms with varying levels of difficulty. Our group tried their most challenging escape room first, purely because we are always up for a challenge and can't resist when somebody claims it's not for beginners. The rooms are intricately designed and definitely worth your time exploring and figuring out the clues. There is a challenge mode where they provide up to 3 hints if you get stuck at a certain point in the escape room -- you can also decide to abandon challenge mode if it's too difficult, but you can't go back into challenge mode. They apparently also have a new room coming soon that is meant to take a total of 8 hours to finish (you can split it over multiple days, so you don't need to go all in one go). It's difficult to write more about their escape rooms without revealing secrets about the room, so don't just take my word for it when I say it's great and visit yourself! read more

Arrival - Location is pretty easy to find and parking is ample, either on the street or in the private lot. Getting up to the top floor is easy, and there is an elevator in addition to stairs if you have ADA needs. The waiting area has a lot of room, seating, games and fun things to look at while you wait. The staff is friendly as well! Introduction - This isn't a "Get in, Get out" atmosphere. You can tell that the staff enjoy the stories behind the rooms and take their time to set the mood. They're very patient if you have a lot of questions, and are open to fun banter if another group is not booked right after yours. Experience - The production quality of these rooms is AMAZING. You really do feel like you're in the world that they described to you. Along with this, the puzzles are also immersive. Say goodbye to silly locks and combinations -- though there are some, they are almost always part of the theme and not some ridiculous tacky excuse for a puzzle. They put a lot of thought and grace into the transitions between rooms, puzzles, and clues. If you're stuck, it's not a walky-talky, they thematically roleplay some kind of character or object in the room to speak with you so you don't lose the experience. When you leave the room, you'll say to yourself "Oh right, that wasn't real. Woops. Back to reality." I can't count the number of times that I giggled and clapped when we solved a puzzle in a way that was unexpected. Even if this is your first escape room EVER, you will be almost begging to just immediately get into another one of their rooms. Don't be discouraged if you didn't escape in time, as the whole experience will make up for the defeat. And if you do manage to escape in time, you will be talking nonstop with your teammates about how everything was solved. You'll feel satisfied and proud of yourself no matter the outcome because it's just TOO COOL. I have done both the Tesla and the Excalibur rooms successfully, and will sing their praises forever. Departure - Have I mentioned yet that the staff is so much fun to just talk to? I know you're here to read about how great the rooms are -- and I hope I addressed that enough -- but there's just something magical about connecting with other humans who are passionate that encourages us to do the same. If you linger, they'll sometimes tell you about -- or even show you -- sneak peaks into future rooms. My boyfriend and I love doing escape rooms! It's a fun date activity that gets us working together and communicating while solving puzzles. We have done a few all over the country and several in San Jose. "Off the Couch" has been by far the best! We were so excited to see that there was a new location and decided we had to check it out! We did the conspiracy room and loved it so much that we came back the next day for inheritance! Both were great experiences! The space is large and great for larger groups. The rooms were new, clean, and well put together. We chatted with the owners and you can really tell they are passionate about what they are creating there! We are a team of six (with prior Escape room experience) and we went for Excalibur - we have not done the other rooms from off the couch. This room is definitely full of surprises and we had a wonderful lady host. A few of the hints that connect each puzzle don't seem logical (at least from my point of view) but overall it's a great game and we had fun throughout the 120 minutes. I think for some of the puzzles you tend to feel that you know how to solve it, but will encounter technical issues getting there. It can be a lil frustrating but overall it's great. read more

Did both rooms here (Inheritance and Conspiracy) with a team of 4 relatively experienced ppl (~10-20 rooms done per person). Escaped from Conspiracy in 51 mins (after embarrassingly spending 20 minutes on the last puzzle because we missed a key clue) and Inheritance in ~35 mins. We got to talk to the owner of the company before one of the rooms who is a die-hard escape room player, and after listening to his intelligent and hilarious rant about the merits and faults of other rooms in the area, I became very excited about how such a passionate person owned this place, and knew that we would be in very good hands. Conspiracy - 5/5. Easily the better of the two rooms, and one of the best rooms I've done. The theming was great, puzzles were novel and interesting, and there was a ton of content packed into the room. Among the best rooms I've done in my limited sample size. Inheritance - 4/5. Honestly a bit of a let down after doing conspiracy but still a solid room overall. The theme wasn't as interesting as conspiracy, and there wasn't as much to do either. This is billed as their easier room though, so I might just be complaining about the difficulty. Both rooms were of very good quality, and should be considered among the best in San Jose. Would recommend both the rooms to everyone, but more experienced players would probably appreciate Conspiracy moreso than Inheritance. They have a pretty liberal clue system so don't be scared about difficulty, since they care more about the players having a good time, and will help you out if you are very stuck. I have done a significant amount of escape rooms and this one is by far the best! They are super accommodating, they had a power outage the day we went and they rescheduled us and gave us credit back. I have since completed all the rooms they currency have there and the whole experience is so immersive and owner is extremely friendly and passionate about what they do. Definitely recommend if you want an amazing and unique escape room experience! read more
