It's good, but I think 4 stars is right. It's cheaper than most places, but the rooms I've done were either 1 room, or the "split your group up" room was just two rooms. Most of the puzzles are solving combinations for locks. I like this, but some people like different types of puzzles. Rooms were nicely themed too. I've done 2 of the 4 games, I hope to do the other 2. It's a step below Escape Game and Omescape, but half the price for an individual game. Definitely will come again. read more

I've only done a handful of escape rooms, and what I liked about this was they really put effort into making a higher class lobby area as well as the intro/scene setting room. None of it looked cheap or amateurish. It did seem to be initially understaffed with a poor young lady having to deal with clues for an ongoing group, checking us in, and resetting our room. So we got a late start, but got the full hour. A young man showed up shortly before we started, so I'm sure that helped. We did Conspiracy of Silicon Valley, which is one of the newer games. Once we entered the actual room, it was charming and took you back into the era it was trying to portray. Here, things looked like a step down from the lobby/intro area. More like it was put together a little more DIY, but it didn't really detract from the experience. We had 5 people and split into 2 groups, which made the puzzle solving more feasible. The clues and puzzles were overall good and doable. There was an issue with not properly resetting a critical prop in our room - again, probably due to being understaffed, but we had to get a clue in order to figure out something wasn't right. So took one star off for that. If not for that, it would have been 5 stars. Initially, it looked quite small, but it expanded a bit into some other smaller rooms. It was really quite well done overall, and I think they did a really nice job. And the other great thing is that it's very reasonably priced compared to other escape rooms. For 5 people, it worked out to be $35/person, which is more than reasonable for an hour of fun. Would come here again with friends. Can recommend the experience! read more

5 of us came here for the "Conspiracy of Silicon Valley" game on Sunday. We all had some experience with escape rooms, but not a lot. The last one I did was before Covid. We parked at the Market & San Pedro Square Parking Garage, which was free for the first 90 mins, and then $1 for each additional 15 mins, up to $10 for weekends or after 6pm. Breakout Studios was only a 4-min walk from the parking garage and was pretty easy to find. A security guard opened the door of the building for us. Then, we walked up the stairs to their entrance on the 2nd floor. Their lobby/waiting area was spacious and elaborately decorated with a cool mysterious vibe. They also had some props on the coffee tables for taking pictures. Since we already signed the wavier online, we had plenty of time to take pictures and chat among ourselves until their staff showed up. It turned out that they only had 1 staff member on duty at the time. We felt sorry for her running around and doing everything herself. Our game didn't start on time because of that as well. It wasn't a big deal since we're not in a hurry. Also, she did a really good job getting into character during the intro video portion. Unfortunately, she forgot to give us the walkie talkie, and another staff member finally gave it to us more than half way through our game. We're impressed that they're able to squeeze in so many puzzles in such a small space. Some puzzles were more challenging than others, but they're all very well thought out and tied to the theme. Both the intro video and the video towards the end had a high tech feel. We successfully escaped with a couple of hints! The medium difficulty rating was accurate, and was the right level for us. We all had a great time. They led us back to the waiting area for a group picture afterwards. However, we didn't receive the picture at first and had to contact them the day after to resend it. Since we had to "divide and conquer" during part of the game, we had fun discussing how each other solved the puzzles they're responsible for after the game as well. Breakout Studios was definitely one of the better escape rooms I had been to. I hope that they're better staffed next time we're here. read more

We had an amazing experience at Breakout Studio! I went with a group of 8 neighbors, and I booked same-day. Shoutout to them for accommodating us on such short notice. We did the Father of Silicon Valley room and our game master went above and beyond to make it fun and engaging. The room itself was awesome. Challenging enough for seasoned escape room enthusiasts but still beginner-friendly, so everyone in our group had a blast. We were able to escape with minutes to spare! The lobby is super cool and really sets the vibe. The only minor downsides: the studio is on the second floor with no elevator, which was a bit tough for me as I'm recovering from knee surgery, and the building has a bit of an old smell. But once you step inside Breakout Studio, it's totally worth it. Can't wait to come back and try another room! read more

The level of technology used with everything from sensors to digital clues made it feel more immersive and modern than the usual lock-and-key setups. The fan trick was a nice touch The room I did was listed as moderate difficulty, and that felt accurate. It wasn't impossible, but some of the puzzles definitely took time and teamwork to crack. A few clues were so cleverly hidden or layered that they really made us think outside the box. It's the kind of challenge that keeps you talking about it even after you've escaped. I've been to 3 of the rooms so far and intend on doing all of them eventually. The staff have always been very friendly and helpful. The three rooms done so far was father of Silicon Valley, timebreaker, and conspiracy. I didn't know this until I was in the lobby and I overheard but there is a recommended order to the rooms, but it doesn't matter overall. Conspiracy definitely had a really interesting theme and I loved it. The puzzles were challenging so I'd recommend somewhat experienced people doing it. I did father of Silicon Valley a while ago but I remember it being fun and a bit challenging. Timebreaker has been my least favorite so far. You do start off in 2 different rooms. The puzzles were pretty easy. Some of the mechanics do need to be worked on. One lock definitely took some tries even though we had the right answer. We were also unintentionally locked out of something we should've had access to. My one qualm about this place is that when we needed help and didn't have access to the walkie-talkie to communicate with the game master, no one came to help and the clock was ticking. I ended up leaving the room to resolve the issue. Overall, I would highly recommend this place. Street parking is the main parking available near buy which does cost money. There are parking garages near by, but I'm not sure if they have the first 1 hour free or not. read more

Had a great time at Breakout Studios! My friends and I havent done an escape room in a few months so this one was our first one back in a while. I was super excited to try out this room considering we have read some great reviews about this place. My friends and I did Hacker of Silicon Valley. As a group who has done 10-15~ rooms together, we were looking forward to what this room had to offer. Upon entering the lobby, we were amazed with the setting, props, and overall atmosphere. It got us really excited for what the room had to offer. There is a little "pre-escape" section that I dont want to spoil, but it was really fun and made it more immersive and interactive. When it came to the actual room itself, I would not say our expectations were exceeded or anything. The decor of the room definitely made me feel like I was a hacker though, but the puzzles and overall gameplay seemed to fall short. I think for what it is, the room was pretty good and made sense to the plot, however there were some things that put us off. There were minor technical difficulties, troubles in puzzles not triggering anything, as well as puzzles that "threw us off" but it made no sense to the story. I wont let this one experience hinder my whole review because there are 3 other rooms (i think) left to try, and I definitely still would be interested in trying them! However, this is just my rating of this specific room and experience. Staff was great, no problem there. They gave us an extra few minutes at the end when we got held up on the last puzzle :D read more

Went here on an escape room journey during the holiday. We did Mr Silicon Valley. It was fun, takes good detective skills, ability to clue in to subtle points and then to drive to conclusions. Don't ask for too many hints up front. Things are more obvious than you think but it's not in your face, need to draw lines where things should be to get the puzzles. Lots of fun. read more

My friends and I did the Hacker of Silicon Valley escape room here. Street parking was plentiful, and we had to call in to gain entry to the building. The lobby had some pretty cool theming, and it was a great place for a photo at the end. We missed some kind of light show at the beginning due to our tardiness, though they said it's the same for all of the rooms. They had a 15 minute grace period, with our time starting after 15 minutes. Overall, the room was okay, with most puzzles revolving around locks. Sometimes, it was tricky matching pins or codes with the right locks. Sometimes we thought the code didn't go with a certain lock, but we just didn't clear it or enter it properly somehow. The front desk said it would be obvious or they would provide instructions on how to use the lock, but we didn't see any instructions, and I guess it wasn't obvious enough to us. Despite this, we managed to escape with time to spare, albeit with some hints. We felt that having fewer people might have enhanced the experience, but it could have also been because most of us had a good amount of escape room experience. Service was excellent, especially in accommodating our lateness and an item accidentally taken from the room, which we returned later that night. In conclusion, it's a decent escape room, but clearer instructions regarding the locks would improve the overall experience. read more

I'm a huge fan of escape rooms, but I haven't been to one in years. So after subtly bringing it up multiple times, I was finally able to bring a group of friends together to do one. After some yelp searching, I suggested this place because of its location--it was in DTSJ, so it would be easy for us to hang around after. We interacted with 2 staff members--one before the game and one after. Both ladies were really friendly and sweet! When you book, there's instruction on how to enter the building, but you basically have to call the number provided and someone will come down to unlock the door. When you walk up, there isn't much, but once you enter the studio... DAMN, it was so nice!! The design style and decorations were top notch! Our group did The Hacker of Silicon Valley. And damn, even the intro before the actual game was a cool experience--something I've never encountered before. We asked about the mission's success rate and the staff said it was about 50% for those who asked for hints and 30% for those who didn't ask for hints. Our group obviously asked for hints and was sooooo close to finishing, but we got stuck on the 2nd to last puzzle, which stumped us for awhile. But also, when we unlocked one of the later puzzles, I guess we were all too busy looking at something else that we didn't even notice another door was opened until like 5 minutes later lol. Nevertheless, definitely a fun experience that everyone enjoyed! Now excuse me, it's time for me to convince more of my friends to do escape rooms with me. read more

Wow just wow. This escape room was amazing! Like where do I even begin? We booked online but you could also call in to ask questions for the rooms. It was a private room meaning just my team and I (we had 7 in our group). The Place looks fantastic. The game master was cool and charming. The rooms were immersive and the games were hard enough for us to really work as a team . Though we did not escape (95 percent there) it was a very great experience. I could not even believe that this type of escape room is in downtown San Jose. Anywho they have 3 more games and we are very much excited to book those in the future! Even though it was a relatively small room, it was very interactive and had all 4 of us constantly occupied and working the whole time! Great lobby, the staff members are very friendly and knowledgeable and the rooms are fun and pretty challenging. We just got home from checking out Breakout Studios' "The Father of Silicon Valley" mission and I just had to crank out my quick review for this. This is not my first escape room, but I wouldn't call myself an enthusiast either. I enjoy and appreciate them and their creators for their ingenuity and creativity. This one, by far, has proven to be my favorite as an overall experience. Getting into the building is tricky since the front door is locked, but once you are in the lobby of the place, it's like you've been transported to Steampunk heaven. The decor from wall to wall & floor to ceiling is impeccably well decorated. The lighting, the ambiance, the props, everything was well-integrated. They had high quality screens to showcase all of the available missions and a screen for going over the general rules of the escape room. Once rules are established, you lock up loose posessions in small square lockers before traveling to your mission in their time machine. The Father of Silicon Valley mission is cleverly done. We hit a technical malfunction for a portion of the beginning and we thought we were going crazy but the tech guy (dude who built the room) came in and helped us out so we could move forward. I appreciated the watchful and helpful voice of God who aided us in the right direction here and there to get us to the necessary positions for clues. I also greatly appreciated the ties to historical events, Bay Area landmarks, and scientific tie-ins. Everything in the room had a fun through-line and tied nicely into the story. We ended up with 7 minutes left to spare and memories of a really fun and well thought-out escape room experience. I'd love to come back and try out the other missions. Came here 2 more times after my first review and decided that the theme really changes the way you experience the escape room. The second time's theme was the science one, and that one was challenging but extremely fun! The third time's theme was the Father of Silicon Valley was my favorite, and being able to see our area's history actually embedded into the escape room was fascinating! Super fun, can't wait for the next experience! I just wish there was a bit more emphasis on the culprit and the medicine for this room, but other than that, couldn't stop talking about the experience with my friends!
