Although this escape room was quite a drive from my hometown, it was worth it! There was one staff member and the manager there--both of which were so kind and fun to chat with. Shoutout to them for trying their best to fix a broken furniture piece and being patient with our clue requests haha. We finished in 1.5 hrs, yay! Picture opportunity w/ props at the end of your visit which will be sent to the email address you put down on the waiver :) I would make the 30-40 min drive to play a game here with friends again! NOTES: There are restrooms and a locker area to store your belongings before entering the escape room. You'll also need to fill out a digital waiver (QR code). GAME: *Homunculus-- This storyline was intriguing and intense without confusing you. I enjoyed how my group was instructed to watch a video going into more detail about the plot we were gonna be immersed in. Pretty much every room had audio playing to continue the storyline and inform you on what task to focus on next + hints. The acting scenes and movable furniture were so cool! Srsly made me respect set construction and the developers' creativity. My favorite aspects of this experience were: - spotlights on which sections to focus on so you're not just put into a huge room, having a sequence and unlocking other rooms was rly satisfying! - walkie talkies for hints instead of having to wave at a camera - the acting and costumes XD this was so funny bc you'll be startled but realize oh it was the rly nice staff from outside so no need to fear PARKING: Plentiful since it's in a plaza with a supermarket. read more

If I could give them a 0, I would. We booked Homunculus but was told that no one could perform as the live actor. Instead, we had to play Alone which was a disaster. Almost all of the puzzles did not work as intended, there were skips or terrible latency in the voice over, and hints were given minutes later than requested. Above all, Homunculus costs $20 more a person than Alone. When we asked for a price adjustment initially, we were told it would be done. Once we completed the room and mentioned a price adjustment again, we were told the manager isn't even in to do it (they're in Europe!?!). I've never written a terrible review before but this was the worse experience and customer service I've ever read more

We played "Alone" and there were 6 of us - but only one or two people could do the clues because there wasn't enough for all of us to do. The story was confusing and did t make sense. I wouldn't really call this an escape room - it's more like an immersive story that you follow along with, and push some buttons. I wouldn't give it a zero if I could. read more

We played the "Alone" room and it was honestly one of the more disappointing escape room experiences that we've been to. The room was put together w/ low budget props and had a non-sensical story plot. Many of the puzzles were worn but worse, they didn't make sense and some were solved not by following clues but rather random button presses or placement of items at poorly marked locations. The only positive was the friendly staff that greeted us (hence the 2 stars) but the escape room itself was sadly a 1 at best. read more

We came here not knowing what to expect. I remember seeing bad reviews a while back for their Hayward location and the Morty rating was fairly low for the rooms here at Newark. But as escape room enthusiast who've done a crap ton of rooms, especially rooms in the Bay Area, we had to try it out. We did "ALONE" which was a 90min experience. Very linear room. You gotta go through the game one puzzle at a time. Xcapade really wants you to focus on the story and get immersed in it, than to try to escape with the fastest time. It wasn't too bad. If you're use to traditional escape rooms, then this will be a new experience for you. Can't really say if it's better or worst, it's just different. See for yourself! read more

Did the Homonculus room. Instructions say to arrive 15 minutes early and so we did that. But we were not helped until about 20 minutes after our meeting time. So we waited for almost 40 minutes. The experience was overall disappointing and lackluster. There was a "storytelling" part of it that was supposed to be immersive but it just took away so much time and was clearly written by ChatGPT or some kind of ai because it made no sense. We could not progress into the next room until all the dialogue was over. I was low key losing my patience because the story was just so bad. We were given 2 hours to solve the escape room but we could've easily solved it in less than 30 minutes if it weren't for all the storytelling and malfunctions. In every room we progressed to, something malfunctioned or did not trigger correctly, which was very frustrating because we had to ask for help multiple times after we solved a room, and was told to just push harder, open the door ourself or redo the puzzle. It was either the props in the room were not well maintained, or the design of the puzzle was just not very intuitive. The recommended amount of people for this escape room was 4-10 people. We had 6 people and it was way too confined and crowded. Can't imagine more than 4 people let alone 10. Anymore than 6 of us, we would probably knock over and break so many things due to lack of space. There's also really only one puzzle in each room so some of us didn't really get to contribute due to not being able to see the puzzle. Puzzles were also very basic but had a lot of reading as a red herring which was also annoying and a huge time sink. We basically fit shapes into a mold like toddlers but had to read through 5 page essays to do it correctly. It was just not very fulfilling. Overall, do not recommend. I didn't come to an escape room to read and listen to a fan fiction written by AI, or to test your faulty equipment. I came here to solve puzzles with my friends. read more

We played the room "Alone", and we did not have a good time. To give some context, I've done over 50 rooms, and have enjoyed most of them (even some that are less enjoyed by others). This is one of the worst experiences I've had at an escape room, and this INCLUDES the gen 1 escape rooms where it was basically disassembling IKEA furniture. This place charges the same price as other premium escape rooms, without the "premium" benefits that other locations provide. Main gripes: - Malfunctioning equipment. - A single employee who was clearly tending to another group simultaneously (he was dressed up in some weird costume when he was repairing our equipment). - We were at times just completely without assistance because no one was answering the walkie talkie. I think whoever created the room initially definitely put some love into it, and it has potential, but it has not been maintained and it is not being managed well. Selling an experience like this is downright DISRESPECTFUL. Save your money and go to... well, literally anywhere else. read more

my first escape room in the bay and it was cute! i liked the minecraft theme and the story. one of the parts was a bit confusing but they do offer hints. it took less than 90 mins to solve for our group to complete. they have 1 live actor and a staff member acting as a salesman. i think this is a good choice for a group who wants to experience and escape room nearby for an affordable price at a beginner ish level. read more
