My wife has been overwhelmed by a top of the line Bernina. Too big and complicated at this age. Charlie, I think, the owner calmed all her apprehension and helped her select and actually trade for a much more appropriate machine. No pressure or difficulty in any way making my wife very happy and cementing a new customer as she is very loyal. My mom and I have been coming here for years. We've always been treated so well by the staff there. I recently brought my serger and two sewing machines up from PHOENIX for service. Yes, I have choices in the Phoenix met area but I drive all the way to Flagstaff because the folks at Odegaards are THAT good. They're fair in their pricing and honest in their feedback and I love that. The selection of fabric is fabulous, machines are available in all different price ranges, and the quality and variety of sewing supplies beats any other fabric store I've yet to find in the state. Negative all around. For starters, the parking lot is small and right off a busy road. Parking stalls are angled and narrow and there aren't many of them. I can't say I had a good or pleasant experience here. One week ago I dropped off my sewing machine, explaining that it was skipping stitches and needed the timing fixed. The guy told me it would be "a couple of days". A week later, I had not received a quote estimating how much it would cost or a phone call with any word whatsoever about my machine and called them to see how it was going. The lady said that "he hasn't started working on it yet, try calling back tomorrow." Meaning, my machine sat there for an entire week without being touched. Someone from the shop called me today telling me that the work was done at that it would be $127. When I got there, I was told that the needle plate and bobbin case had been replaced at the cost of $30 each, and the timing fixed. In addition, labor is $60 an hour and that they don't keep exact track of how much time it takes to do the work. I asked the employees to put the old parts back in the machine. I had the new pieces removed and paid for the labor time. The cost of putting the bobbin case and needle plate in were not deducted from this cost, so I paid for that plus the actual time it took to fix the timing. None of the employees were rude or seemed offended by my request, but the man who was at the checkout register seemed brusque at best. As he passed by his manager I heard the employee who replaced the parts whisper an aside to his manager: "Think it'll run?" to which the reply was "hope so!" Overall, I felt that I should have been called with a quote, and that did not happen. I feel that not receiving a call to update me on the progress and not starting work for a week when "a couple of days" is quoted is also unacceptable. I also feel that not keeping close track of the time it takes to do the requested work is unprofessional. I was charged the flat $60 an hour for something that probably took 20 minutes. The lack of a quote is worsened by the fact I did NOT specify to replace any parts, which jacked up the cost. I also feel that the aside comment made by the employee to his manager within earshot of me was rude. An unpleasant experience from start to finish, and I won't be going to Odegaard's again. If you go, remember to park on the street. read more

O.K., I took sewing lessons in the 1970ths. Now that I finally have the time to sew, my sewing machine has a tension problem. Odegaards is a family owned business which has been in business for more years than I can remember. I bought my sewing machine from them, based on their recommendation, & it has never needed attention until now. Flagstaf is 1 hour from home, so I asked my husband to pick-up the sewing machine on an upcoming trip to Flag that he had scheduled. Weeks later, I went to sew on the machine and the stiching wasn't right. Fortunately, Dan was going to Flag again the next day. And I went with him. Odegaards heard my complaint, adjusted the bobbin holder, gave me a new bobbin at no charge, & (because I took examples of the work I was doing) explained what the problem was and how I needed to correct it. My experience with Charlie Odegaard happened a few days ago but I was so angry that I put off posting a review because I didn't want to write anything when I was that mad but after relating my experience to several people who all encouraged me to write a review I have decided to go ahead. Full disclosure, I disagree with Charlie's politics and have emailed criticisms to him but I have never been rude to either him or any of his employees. At the onset of the recent pandemic, I like many sewers in Flagstaff began making PPE for the local health care people, I was using my older model Bernina almost non-stop and one day it just stopped working. I took it in to Odegaards to have it looked at and hopefully put back in working order. I realized that a lot of people were sewing and needing their machines serviced so I was not too surprised when I had not heard anything after a couple of weeks, at three and a half weeks I called to check on the progress and was told someone would call me back and let me know when I could expect it to be done, no one called me back so the next day I called again. Charlie got on the phone, the first thing he accused me of was bringing in a machine that "had been sitting in a closet for years and now I expected him to be able to fix it". I informed him that I had been using the machine on a daily basis for the last two months and that before that, no it had not been sitting in a closet but that I had used it at least weekly. He then angrily told me that the machine was so old that he had no idea if he could even get parts, he, in his own words was too stupid to fix it and I should just come and get it out of his shop immediately. When I got to the store, in less than an hour, he told me "well, it works now", I asked what that meant and he said I don't know I just plugged it in and it worked, I asked him if I owed him any money and he said no because it didn't work one hundred percent. I took the machine and left, I have not even tried it as I have found a reputable repairman who has agreed to look at it because I obviously want a machine that works at one hundred percent. I would have had no problem with Charlie telling me, nicely, that he didn't think he could fix my machine, what I object to was his angry and accusatory tone, as I said I have never been rude to either him or his employees, in fact one woman I talked to thanked me for being so understanding about how long it might take to get worked on because of how overloaded they were due to the recent health crisis. I will never set foot in his store again and I will tell any sewer who asks how unprofessional he is, I have already informed a Bernina dealer in Cottonwood that they probably should not direct anyone to Odegaards Sewing Center if they want their machine serviced or repaired. read more

Loved this place. Our first visit and there was so much there it look at and see I spent over an hour there. They had a lot of panels for quilt making and their fabrics are lovely. Can't wait to go back! One note: there is parking in the back which we didn't know but would be easier. read more

The employees are very quick to recognize your presence and they take time to discuss your project and help you find fabrics and help you figure out how much fabric you need without over purchasing. That is very helpful to me as a beginner quilter. I wish they weren't so expensive and that they had a larger stock of fabric designs that are not Native American in style. That being said I really like the fabrics that they DO have that are not Native American designs. If I can't find the notion or sewing accessory I need at Joanne or Michael's I can usually find it here. I've not taken a sewing class or asked them to fix my sewing machine so I can't comment on that part of their services. It is a bit of a challenge to park your car but take your time and think it through, even drive by and check it out before attempting to park and you'll be ok. read more

My machine has been at the shop for 3 weeks. I called to ask the status. First, they couldn't find it. They finally determined that it was waiting for parts, which should be in "today". Called 2 days later. Again, couldn't find the machine, then said it was still waiting for parts. When the machine was dropped off, the man who took it (assuming it was the owner because he signed the claim ticket Odegaard) was very unfriendly, said he couldn't say when it would be done because they had a lot of machines, and gave no indication of cost. I still don't have the machine, I don't know how much it's going to cost, and I am a Grammy who has promised costumes to children for Halloween. They really need to update record keeping and management. Everyone is very cheery (except the owner) but they are clueless. read more

Love this store. Wonderful parking lot behind the store with easy access to the store from the parking lot. Called ahead and they were were able to clean 4 sewing machines in one day since we came from Phoenix. Several hours at the new casino and the machines were done. So nice of them to do that..love the store and it's worth the ride to have expert care for sewing machines and to check out the new fabric and "stuff". Would gladly wait a week or two for my machine just to have them work on it. read more
