Even though it's July in October, everyone needs a good Autumnal apple picking outting. And let me tell you, Ochs Orchard delivers the goods. Located in Warwick NY (home of more orchards than you can count on two hands), Ochs is the place for the serious apple picker. Once you reach the top of 2 dirt roads (cars without shocks need not apply), you go and pick up your 1/4 or 1/2 bushel bag. You are given a map of the entire orchard, which is split up by apple type. Then you can pick to your hearts content. I recommend leaving the beaten path for the better apples. Ochs also has a variety of berries and pumpkins to pick, as well as the standard Hudson Valley fare (maple syrup, honey, etc.) at the home store. read more

I should preface that my partner is a 5th generation produce farmer from upstate NY, so we are well versed on large scale farming operations. So perhaps, I have a somewhat biased idea of what a farm "should be". I really really wanted to love this place. We drove over an hour to get there. We called ahead to confirm picking was plentiful, and it WAS NOT. We only picked about 2 pints worth of small blueberries. There were NO raspberries left either. I'm used to going berry picking and leaving with large flats of fruit. These were over picked and under ripe. Small berries. Point being, no one should have been picking the day I went. Long walk to the fruit as well so keep that in mind if distance and hills don't work for you (kids and older adults). $2 entry fee (must be a NJ thing, NY doesn't do this). Many people were NOT wearing masks. There was NO staff in the fields guiding anyone whatsoever or patrolling mask usage. No hand sanitizer when (everyone is touching everything). Onto the General store that's very OVER-PRICED. Pies are NOT homemade and must be frozen, pre-bought and baked (think Sysco). Onto the $5.50 tiny "medium" homemade ice-cream, it is grainy with ice crystals and flavorless and just plain NOT good (cake batter & pistachio flavors are what we tried). I therefore do believe it's actually homemade, and just not done well unfortunately. The plus of this place is it's set atop of a knoll and has a pretty backdrop. There are very few places more beautiful than Ochs in the early summer. Set high on a hill overlooking the Warwick Valley, the only thing you see over your head are clouds. Apple picking in September and October is one of the delights of living in "Apple Country" and Ochs is the best of the best. Ample parking, friendly service, many different kinds of apples and great prices. And because they're a little off the beaten path, you don't get the hordes from the city trampling all over everything. Here, you get locals and return guests who value Ochs and their way of growing - no pesticides! It's a beautiful thing. I am loathe to give away the secret, but their homemade peanut butter is unbelievable, they make the best apple cider donuts and if I had to pick a favorite apple (they have more than a dozen varieties), I'd go with the Honeycrisp, Evercrisp, Winesap or Fuji. Sweet and tart, always crunchy, and fairly big on the average. Stop in 365 for apples if you live close, it's worth the trip. read more

I loved the chance to explore a farm in the black dirt part of the Hudson Valley. They are a real working orchard, with peaches, plums, apples, and pears. It was so beautiful to walk the slopes and look out at meadows and ponds and distant farm houses. Even the wildflowers growing among the trees were beautiful, daisies, bachelor buttons, goldenrod. I quite enjoyed the little petting zoo part, with a few very gentle goats and donkeys, who eyed visitors and delicately took feed from our palms. They had feed in old-fashioned gumball machines, right by the fence--you can get a handful of feed for a quarter. It amused the youngsters and this mature adult. I got excellent, fresh, affordable fruits and vegetables inside the spacious, attractive market. They had squash, corn, and the best peaches ever in the history of the world. They had tiny sweet melons. They had "Catskills Comfort" maple syrup bottled as if it were whiskey, ha! I got some for Christmas presents. They have an ice cream parlor with a beautiful mural of fruit trees and birds. It was sad when the lady inside the farmer's market part told me they did not have enough fruit to do the "you pick" thing right now (July). She said a frost hit while the trees were in bloom and reduced the crop. But the berries look abundant--they were not quite all in yet. A lot were ripening on some very tall, rampant canes. My #1 go-to spot!! I've been recommending this place to everyone I know. They have every kind of veggies, fruits, and gourds growing there. After picking and we're exhausted, we go feed the donkeys and goats(?) there, and then we finally make it down to the little market. Pick up some local raw honey, and then we head to the back where they have their fresh apple cider donuts and hot hot hot apple cider Bonus: The staff is friendly and not peeking over your shoulder everywhere. A fun day for families. We went the second weekend after opening. Many of the strawberries weren't super ripe and those that were had bugs eating them. Some cherries were available. All in all, this is a cute orchard and a great experience for families. We got there on a Saturday around 1030 and it was already starting to fill out with guests. read more

Similar to others, my family has been going here annually every year since before I was born, and it is always my favorite day of the fall season. They do have a great variety of apples, which are well organized and labeled, and the view of the mountains from the orchard is amazing. The store also sells fresh farm goodies including apple cider and apple donuts. But, it has gotten very crowded, along with Pennings and Warwick Valley Winery, so if it's a gorgeous fall weekend in September or October be sure to get there early 9AM/10AM -- forget it after 12 PM. Also, it has gotten increasingly expensive over the years -- a bushel was $24 this past weekend. Ugh! But, you pay for the experience and it is only once a year. read more

I gave this one star to their manner. It is first week of berries picking so, I called the farm to double check if they have strawberries ready to be picked. Because it is 2 hours drive so, I want to make sure I won't waste my 2 hours drive for nothing. When I called, this guy picked up so, I asked if there are strawberries ready? He told me there are strawberries. Then I asked when they started open to the public, he said Thursday. Then hung up on me. First of all, he sounded not welcoming and hurry to answer. I wasn't finish my questions yet and was hung up the call. So I called right back. The same guy picked up so, I told him I just called and wasn't done talking yet, and if he hung up on me? All his responses was "Excuse me, Excuse me, Excuse me?" Then transferred me to the other guy. Thankfully the other guy was more helpful. He told me that the strawberries will be more next week. If I listen to the first guy, who clearly doesn't have service mind and not being honest, I'd spent 2 hours drive there and found "some" or nothing that worth the time to drive there to pick. They have to remember that there are plenty of farms to choose from. They're "not the only farm." I planed to go there, but I changed my mind from that one phone call. That totally turned me down and I don't wanna give business to someone who don't even want to be bothered by helping their customers. read more

Great orchard not to far from NYC. Excellent fruit and vegetables choice. You pay for what you picked. Being regular customer for last 5-6 years, I have noticed that this year they have increased prices beyond any reason. I'm not willing to pay extra if someone else is abusing the pick your own system. Also girls at checkout constantly cheat on weight (they charge for box weigh, even though they claim not to). I've worked at farmers markets all over NYC and I have to be honest, nothing is as good as a fresh sun-warmed strawberry/cherry/raspberry/blueberry that you've picked off of the plant yourself. Ochs is a beautiful/reasonably priced farm to pick your own on. There aren't a whole lot of "extras" here--Ochs keeps it simple, but wonderful. FYI, they're getting better about updating facebook/website stuff, but once you go you can get a map/picking schedule and you'll be set for the year! read more

It was like 100 deg when we came here and surprisingly there were quite a few people who had the same idea. I almost passed out after picking a quart of berries. I think I was about to have a case of heat exhaustion but I took shelter in the payment tent. I think they should spray water on a day like that and have an EMT on standby. I was ready to collapse. O yeh the berry picking was super fun for $4.99 a quart(?). I had a blast, really trying not to faint from picking the BEST OF THE BEST of the blueberries. I had to catch them all. My boyfriend only picked like 30 cause apparently he had a really sophisticated method for super sweet berries any who guess who ended up eating some of mine. I'm not a raspberry fan so we didn't linger too long on that field but we tried a couple and they were really sweet. Would def recommend anyone to try it once and if they live in the area, go all the time! I do respect all the field workers for being out there all day to maintain the crops. They also have a store with some home made and general stuff. The ice cream shop apparently sells some flavors made by the berries from the farm. Och's has been a family favorite since I was a little kid. Great place to go apple picking, grab a pumpkin, corn on the cob and apple cider. The cider donuts are so incredible -- when they're right out of the oven, they just melt in your mouth. Outstanding!! My only cavet (the reason why I am deducting one star) is that the secret is out -- everyone knows about it and the place can be a zoo in the fall. It is located at the top of a small dirt road and can be kinda tricky with all the cars up there. But it is worth it for the small country feel once you get up there! read more

If you're looking to apple pick with endless amounts of choices and great crop to pick from, come here. It's just an hour north of NYC and it's really a beautiful drive. Prices are reasonable, you pay for the bag and and fill that bad boy up until you can't squeeze anymore! The donuts get a 4/5 because I've had better apple cider donuts but hey, it's a donut. I came here because of all the positive reviews on Yelp, plus I usually go to the same place for the past 5 - 6 years, and wanted to try something different. From the moment we got there, we were... underwhelmed. The first place you arrive is the general store, you keep going past a tiny pen with 2 donkeys ( I think), and continue up an extremely narrow path to the orchards. There is a building, which is more of a hut where you buy the bags you use for the apples/produce, rent wagons, and apple pickers. The bathrooms were port-a-pottys, and on an 87 degree day, they hadn't been cleaned out. Words cannot explain what opening those doors was like. I had to get back in my car, and drive back down the narrow path just to use the store restroom. The orchards themselves were nice enough, we picked a good amount of my favorite apples. The girl at the "hut" for checkout was nice as well. The store was nothing compared to what we are used to at our usual orchard - which has fresh made apple doughnuts, pies, honey, etc. Plus the lady behind the counter was pretty rude. All in all not a bad experience, but I'll return to my usual place for pumpkin picking. read more

It's the day after the wedding and there are still a lot of family and friends in town so what do you do? You round them all up, pack a large picnic basket, and head out to the orchard for a little apple picking. The Ochs orchard is on a gently sloping hill with a gazebo at the top. I would suggest packing a picnic lunch, buying a 1/2 bushel bag, and picking apples on your way up the hill to the gazebo. Then take a break and have some lunch. Make your way back down the hill picking more apples. Cheap fun for the entire family. The best part is getting home and making a fresh apple pie and apple cobbler. read more

I've been going up to the general Warwick NY area for apple picking for a family tradition for years. After being a touch disappointed with the crummy apple selection and horrible traffic at a neighboring orchard, I decided to see what Yelp had to mention. Luckily for me, it looks like I found a gem. For one, it looks like a working farm. It's a very low-key setting, and if you get there when I did (11:30 am on a Saturday), you won't exactly have to fight the crowds. Plenty of apples of all kinds were there, and I could see that if you're down for the trip in the summer, they have all sorts of berries and fruits you can pick if you're so inclined. My family and I had a great time. Plus, for $25, you can get a lot of apples. If you feel like going hard on the picking front, I recommend either bringing a wagon with you or spending the extra $5 to rent a wagon. Also, they have those picker things, but at my height, I could do without. I saw they worked well though. Beyond the apples, the view is incredible. It's hard to believe that this is 60 miles from Midtown. By the entrance to the orchard, they have this nice BBQ with yummy pulled pork sandwiches. (Though for you hardcore BBQ fanatics, I will say that this BBQ requires sauce.) Down the hill at the country store, they have all the accoutrements of an orchard store, with preserves, cider donuts, ice cream and even jugs of cider you can take home. The cider is delicious hot. I liked it because it was an actual orchard instead of Apple Picking Incorporated like the other places. If you're looking for a laid-back day in the country, this is the spot. read more

This review is solely for PYO apples. This was my first time ever going apple picking and I am so happy that I decided to come here! Ochs Orchard has stunning views and really gives you the feel that you're really in the country. For PYO apples its $14.00 (10 pounds?) for a small bag, and $27.00 for a large one (20-22 pounds?). I went on 10/12 and there were plenty of apples left to pick. Parking is free. The orchard is very large and they have several groups of apple trees in different locations so if you cannot find any when you first encounter an area, don't be afraid to venture out and see if you can find some more. They also allow you to rent a wagon or apple picker, but I didn't need one. Also, you have try the Apple Cider Doughnuts!!! Amazing! read more

This orchard is great. Came here on a day trip with my boyfriend and had a great time. The trip from the entrance of the orchard to the parking lot was a little difficult. The road is very small and traffic is terrible. Took us almost half an hour just to get to the parking lot! We went on Sunday 10/12/14 at around 3. Although it's relatively late into apple season and we went late in the day, we still walked away with a big bag of apples. Pros: -Clearly labelled trees & map -easy to find -free parking -amazing views -delicious apples -other fruits and veggies available for picking! This is a great orchard. I'm happy that they were one of the few honest orchards left in close proximity to the nyc. I read so many bad reviews on other orchards in the area and the night before I switched to ochs from my original choice and I'm so glad that I did. It's $14 for a peck Bag and $27 for the larger bags. The orchard as of yesterday still had Soo many apples left for picking. Pumpkins were becoming scarce so you should get there soon if you need any. There arent too many frills such as hay rides and games but you get what you need at a great price. The shop has awesome cider donuts and ice cream. Totally worth it. My family loved it. read more

The actual Orchard is beautiful... view is amazing so much space feels like no one else is there! Workers there are also very nice and helpful ! Definitely get a picker to pick your apples, the best are at top and this time of year most are only high up. Once we finished we came down to buy some cider doughnuts (our favorite) at the shop, my mom got excited and went "look she just put some out come grab some" to ME... a worker comes over and goes " um i do not know why you are even saying that they are all the same thing" with a big attitude. The other worker then looks at us and goes " um yes all the same thing same doughnuts" with another attitude. Does not seem like a big deal but the attitude was crazy. We were just excited! So we left not spending any money here. Same incident happened last year, we understand how some people have off days just no need to take it out on customers who are excited to buy your stuff?? I never wrote my experience with any places here on yelp but I truly was just caught off guard. My family and I have been coming here for years!!! The staff is rude and they treat you like a criminal when they don't have the proper systems in place causing confusion. Then, The workers don't do their jobs and so they constantly stop to question what you have in your bag - I wouldn't mind if they weren't so rude and accusatory; so... if you go to this place for Apple picking, you will be accused of stealing even if you paid,as my family did, and leave feeling violated instead of leaving after what should feel like a fun day of apple picking in the fall. This place is brilliant. 90 minutes out of town is this orchard, free to enter, where you can pick from a variety of fruits & vegetables. They're so cool, in there that whole families set up picnics amongst the apple trees & make a whole day of it. The apples I took directly from a tree (Stayman Winesap) were the best apples I have ever tasted. EVER. The golden-hued autumn trees, overlooking the farm valley, walking with my girl. It was one of the most beautiful, romantic places I've ever been. Then we went to the gift shop. In addition to a yummy, hot cup of cider we shared a hot homemade apple cider doughnut, a la mode with apple pie ice cream, whipped cream & fudge. $3. We were correct, very few children and plenty of locations to enjoy apple picking alone in our little group. Here's the weaknesses of Ochs: lousy pies and a curt staff. I have never seen an employee smile at this place. Why does everyone seem so unhappy? I bought an apple pie yesterday, baked by Chef Pierre I was told. We always come here. Fruits are good. Buy today, after picking cherries, I asked them why I was charged $40 for some cherries, I asked them if they CHARGED Weight for the boxes. The lady told me Absolutely not, after weighing them, I put the cherries into a plastic bag and asked her to Weigh it AGAIN. This time it was much lighter. So They were CHARGING for all the Heavy boxes they provided. They counted the weight of the boxes !!! When I complained. The lady said oh, sorry, I think the wind blew this way, so the weight was inaccurate:(. Please check before checking out. I hope they can fix this issue , it is irresponsible and fair for hundreds of costumer who unknowingly buy all these fruits and paying Extra for this. read more

This place is so much fun! My husband had never been apple picking before and we wanted to bring our young son. Its not a tourist attraction with bounce houses and stupid stuff like that. Had a great time picking apples and all sorts of veggies with my family. And we don't have any kids -all adults. No admission fee (unlike some of the places nearby). The best deal is the giant apple bag- you can really stuff it, and it comes out to about $1 a pound (get those honey crisps!). I even picked potatoes, jalapeños, zucchini, cabbage, tomatoes, green beans, peppers, and saw that they had lettuce and Brussel sprouts and other veggies. The peaches appeared to be gone when we went (we went two weeks ago by the way). I hope to come back next summer and berry pick. We drove up from Fairlawn, NJ - easy one hour drive. read more

Great orchard! Loved that there was vegetables for picking too. Very tasty food as well to purchase for lunch. Big orchard and might be a lot of walking if you're not used to walking a lot or hills but there's staff driving around in golf cart type cars if you need a lift around. Missed seeing the animals or pies so I definitely would go back. read more
