I just bought a new car, so I brought my old car here to be smog checked before selling it. My car passed inspection on the first attempt, the process was 15-20 minutes total, and the clerk was largely nice and conversational. The reason for the mediocre review: On Oceanside Smog's website it advertises smog checks for $29.75. I ended up paying $48. I went to Oceanside Smog directly after work. I ask about the price, thinking it's about $30, but the clerk says it's $58 with the certificate. I ask about the coupon online, he acknowledges it, so I offer to bring it up on my phone. "Sorry, but we need a printed copy in order for the coupon to be valid." What? This is 2015, not 1995. Why on Earth should we be wasting paper on coupons if I can bring it and it's barcode up on my phone screen? It's a waste of paper, and frankly a waste of time. Not to mention that this is a small business; it's not like this coupon has to be printed so some regional manager can check the numbers. Give me a break! I haggled the clerk (I'm not sure if it was John or not) down to $48. Additionally, if you *do* have the coupon, the cost will not be $29.75, it will be closer to $38 with the certificate. read more

I've been going to this place for a very long time (probably 6 to 8 different cars over the years. I send my kids there, and I've been sending friends there), but when a car that they had passed at least twice in the past, failed a physical inspection, when nothing had physically changed with the car, I started to wonder what was up. After spending a few hours researching the issue, and taking the time to make an appointment with a referee, I found that the Executive Order from CARB that they had used as the basis for the failure was the wrong one! So I canceled the referee appointment, printed the correct one, and took it back in, and after a discussion, I was told it would be OK. And, after a complete re-inspection, it passed. So I'm thinking, what if this had happened to someone that didn't have the experience or time to sort this out? How much time and money would they have wasted because these folks couldn't figure out how to look up a part on the computer? Nice folks, but they're not getting any more of my business...dealing with the insanity that is the CARB, the last thing I need is an inspector that is either to lazy or not bright enough to do the only thing they are supposed to be able to do. All the time I've saved over the years (other reviews are right, they are fairly quick) went out the window when I had to waste hours to figure out what they couldn't seem to do, when it's their job to do it. read more

This guy really went above and beyond. We got our smog done in January, and he made a stressful situation so much easier. We have a 2004 Hyundai Sonata that we have had issues with setting the readiness monitors. After spending $165 at the dealership to have them set the monitor two years ago (in which even they still couldn't set one of them...), we were beyond frustrated to find that they needed to be set again this time around. So I called the dealership, and they no longer offer that service as their dynomometer has been down for over 6 months. Okay, so how do i do it? "Just keep driving it." So well over 2,000 miles later, still missing monitors. Call the dealership again and ask for the specific drive cycle that needs to be performed. "Well, we don't really have that info available, we just drive it on the dyno at varying speeds until they set." Great. So a couple hundred miles go by, and we are down to the wire. Smog NEEDS to be done. I finally get all but one, but at last smog, you can have one not set. So we go to Oceanside Smog, and unfortunately, the smog law has changed. Now, only the Evap monitor can be Not Ready, and its our Catalytic Converter monitor Not Ready. So, defeated, I ask John what I can do since we've put so much mileage and still cant get the thing to set. He goes over to his computer, and within two minutes has a printout for me of the EXACT drive cycle I need to complete. The next morning I did it, and got the monitor to set right away. I cannot thank him enough. It's mind blowing that he was able to give me a drive cycle when even the dealership couldn't! I will definitely be returning for all our smogs (big family, lots of cars). He could have kept quiet, and collected multiple retest fees. But instead, he showed me how to set them, offered free pretests, and even did a full retest for free (pretty sure that was out of pity for me spending about $200 in fuel driving aimlessly, but I don't care, free is free).
