While staying in Ocean Grove we tried this bake shoppe that is on the Main Street. This place is adorable and you can tell all of the locals come here. Everyone knows each other and outside everyone is meeting up. It has a great small town feel. The bakery has everything you could imagine. They have lots of different sweets, breads, cookies, brownies, etc. I had a piece of the olive focaccia which was delicious and then I also had an almond croissant which I thought was just OK. I would not get that again. If you have a sweet tooth, this is definitely a place that you want to visit. Unfortunately the chai tea latte was not very good. They used some type of sugar mix with it and it wasn't dissolving enough and it was all at the bottom and it didn't really have any flavor to it. That was disappointing. I have been going into this shop for many years. The baked goods are fine even though not baked there. They get their product from a bakery i have loved for years, Rockland Bakery in Nanuet NY. Unfortunately the person behind the counter is rarely in a good mood and today she was outright rude, probably at least the 3rd time she has been outright rude, completely unnecessarily. NOT NICE!!! I ordered a cranberry muffin and a black coffee. This "coffee" tasted like dirty water and the muffin tasted like it came from a low-end grocery store - AND it was stale. Even the cranberries were hard as a rock. The muffin was a veritable sham. No berries inside, only the crusty old ones at the very top. The only "flavor" I detected was sugar - no berries. I have baked better muffins in my sleep. As if that wasn't enough, the woman behind the counter chose to make disparaging remarks about me to her friend who was in the shop, and chose to guess my age. We have to join the chorus of other reviewers here: the baked goods here are stale. As one other person aptly put it, "I like dry-aged steak. When it comes to baked goods, it's another story." The chocolate-coated 'pretzel' had was a nice combination of chocolate and cinnamon and looked adorable, but it was dry, dry, dry. Same with the chocolate roll type thing. Our daughter's chocolate chip muffin tasted like cardboard. Their black and white cookie had a good frosting situation but the cookie itself was too soft. We're settling on three stars instead of two because the women working were very friendly and patient, and their iced coffees were good. I have tried to support this bakery for years, but every time I visit I am disappointed. i do not believe anything is baked on site. Today I wanted to purchase a blondie, for $3.75, and after ordering was told of the $5 credit card minimum. I explained that I did not have any cash and was told that she could not sell me the item, " there was nothing she could do." I said that there did not have to be a minimum and tried to nicely explain that folks nowadays rarely carry cash. She offered no solution but gave me a lot of attitude, asking if I lived in town (I do) and for how long (20 years). She then cut me off and was incredibly snarky using an Incredibly condescending tone. I never raised my voice, but simply asked questions and was immediately hit with attitude. Really disappointed. Ugh. Came late in day on Sunday. Chose the oatmeal cookie (shrink wrap should have been a clue) and the small keylime cheesecake (?). Got bAck to hotel hoping for a tasty dessert. Ugh. $13. Cake in a bag. The keylime tastes like fake keylime flavor (I've made my own). The oatmeal cookie did not taste fresh more like a generic store cookie. Both are in the trash. Will not buy anything from this "bakery" shop again. I know it's a beach town and expect to be taken advantage of but don't expect to be lied to. read more

Looking for a quick bite to eat in the morning. We got the Oreo cupcake and blueberry. Probably wasn't a good sign that there was a complaint jar next to the register. The Oreo cupcake was dry the icing was hard and the cupcake tasted like it was 3 days old. The blueberry muffin was better but also tasted like it was made the day before. Stopped in to order a cake for our 6th anniversary. There was a beautiful cake in the cooler that unfortunately was red velvet, which my wife doesn't really like, so I ordered one just like it in another flavor. I popped in today to pick it up, and was very let down. I didn't order rainbow sprinkles/jimmies. The cake is smaller. The frosting resembles NOTHING like the cake in the cooler. The cake is taller. The frosting is different. Pink lettering? Frankly, let's take a really close look at this thing. Basically, a cake that I could have picked up at the grocery store. Maybe they made it, or maybe not. It wasn't worth the dialogue, as our celebration is today with family coming in, so I just took it. What a terrible let down. Moral of the story? Don't pre-pay them for a cake or custom orders. Pay when you pick up. And, maybe ask for a receipt as they are cash only (hey #IRS). At least there would be a record of what's ordered. Who puts any type of sprinkle on a cake? read more

We've been coming here for a few years with only good things to say about the bakery. The coffee is excellent, as are the pasties we've ordered. Apple turnovers, crumb cake, cookies, etc. have been fresh and tasty. The staff are friendly and very patient. The ambiance is charming, unlike bakery departments in supermarkets. Never been there but have enjoyed the spoils of a good food haul. Dogs are allowed inside, and the man at the counter apparently gets super excited when my dog comes and gives her two "cookies" which are dog biscuits that she apparently loves. If you knew this crazy, neurotic dog you wouldn't believe it as there are very few things she will eat more than once a week. For humans, I would suggest the crumb buns. The regular, raspberry, or blueberry are the best. I enjoy the blueberry the most. These buns are just an excuse to eat coffee cake, as there is like 1.5 inches of crumble on top and an inch of cake. You can feel the weight in your stomach as it settles in- it's a super heavy way to start your day but oh so worth it. read more

The store smells a bit funny inside. The walls/inside in general looked a bit drab. Pictures of local pets and news articles brightened up some of the walls. Staff was friendly and helpful. They had 3-4 different cookie/brownie bars on display, some cookies, 4-5 different types of cake, and 4-5 types of cupcake (of similar/same flavors as the cakes). Tried a smores bar. It was dry, low on flavor, and overall did not taste nearly as good as it looked (avoid!) Apricot bar - moist and apricot-y. Tasted better than it looked, but still not stellar. Chocolate Orange Creamsicle cake - huuuuge slice. Tasted delicious. Great orange cream frosting. Moist chocolately cake. They dont sell milk! They have milk for coffee/tea but no individual serve milk cartons. That is a big negative for me. How can you sell cake and cookies but not milk? They have a 3-4 small tables with 2-3 chairs each to sit at outside. Overall a decent place to get a slice of cake or a cupcake and sit outside. read more

I gave this woman the benefit of doubt about this being an isolated incident. Stop by this shop with my family this morning. This has to be one of the worst bakeries I have ever been to. It is cute and the staff was great but the bakery products were awful. I ordered this blueberry muffin and the only blueberries were the ones you could see on the top. Which means that they make the batter and put it in the muffin tin and sprinkle blueberries on top. But the batter was so thick and no aeration that the blueberries don't sink in. Horrible. I also ordered a bagel which I swear came out of a Pepperidge Farm bag from the supermarket. Like a fool, I went back the next day and ordered an apple strudel. The filing clearly came out of a can. Just horrible food. read more

One word: Your typical small bake shop--not bakery. The baked goods are from Paterson, unless I'm mistaken, which I'd maybe learn from?? But this isn't about me as much as my experience... Final word: I wonder if they sell any homemade goods at all outside of their lunch menu, or items from a local bakery--there must be one in town to support, no? And I wish they offered whole grain products, because "multi" is still primarily white flour... But still. We used to like sitting al fresco here with our iced coffees and multi-grain and onion rolls. Because when it comes to feeding time, this shop, in addition to Nagles, Seaview Sweets, Seagrass, and DJs, have been the mainstays at Main Ave (in the sad absence of Barbaric Beans and Yvonne's Cafe, but with the happy addition of Burbelmaiers pie shop). Unless you're feeling fancy for Bia European Bistro at Majestic...or exploring elsewhere at the grove to discover Dunes Cafe... Extra words: Although I have to agree with the other yelp-timents that the service here can be curt, and you feel rushed that you gloss over the selections and force-snap up some super sweet concoctions--because you don't want to hold up the line--which you end up tossing out anyway for fear of diabetes (forget tooth decay) if you dare devour them, whatever they were... So 2 stars instead of 3 until I figure this one out and my changing appetite... Oh, the hazy shades of summer. Additional note: Cough up $4 for a large iced coffee here. But bear in mind that this is a bake shop and not a bakery; nor is it a roastery, like America's Cup or Asbury Roasters where the iced coffees are actually a buck cheaper... Even Day's Ice Cream sells the same size drink for $3. So you be the judge of this joint's business move. And while at it, you might want to sit at DJ's across the road and think it over an egg sandwich and/or choco-cheese muffin, unless you crave their pizza. I stopped in the bakery for the first time! Actually I stopped in Ocean Grove for the first time. Sean was very nice, and I enjoyed the pumpkin coffee and coconut pineapple curd cake. Just awesome! First off I would like to say that I have lived in Ocean Grove for quite a few years and have heard many negative things about this place. However, I have not had a bad experience here until recently. My sister and my 8 YR old nephew decided to check the place out and had a horrible experience there. The clerk was extremely rude to them, giving them dirty looks, and rushing them to make a selection. Anyone who treats a customer like this let alone a young boy should be ashamed of themself. This is not the first time people have told me about the rude service here as my friends told me they were treated the same way when they came to visit me a few months back. Besides the bad service here, they don't accept credit cards, and they don't even bake their own food. Ask anybody who lives in town and they will tell you how bad this place is. read more

We've been customers of the bake shop for years. The staff is friendly. The shop is clean. The selection of breakfast sweets and breads sell out on weekends so set your alarm clock to get there early. A good selection of large cookies, cake slices and whole cakes. They offer a variety of coffees and teas. There are outdoor tables. Relax with your selection and take in the local color. You'll see a lot of regulars here. This place has a nice wide selection of sweet and less-sweet stuff: homemade bread/ rolls, breakfast pastries (donuts, cronuts, bear claws etc.) and dessert pastries (cupcakes, tarts, bars etc.). It's the kind of place you'd go to pick up breakfast to eat looking at the beach, but I went at 3 in the afternoon to get a few breakfast things to take home for the next morning and they still had a pretty decent selection. I was happy to see the place wasn't fixated on any one type of baked good and especially not on the trendy cupcakes and cronuts. Also happy to have a place to get bakery bread that wasn't vegan or gluten-free, as several of the other bread places in the area specialize in those and it's just not my bag. I got some bread (they slice it for you), onion rolls, a bear claw and two of the "cigar" pastries that are rolled-up sweet dough on steroids. The bear claw was nice and light with lots of sliced almonds, and better than the average oversweet soggy bear claw. The cigars (chocolate and raspberry) were heavier and a little dryer than I expected, but still tasted good and each was big enough that you could split it with another person and still feel like you each had a whole pastry. The bake shoppe interior did not smell bad and seemed more cute, bright and spruced up than the review photos make it look. Maybe they have repainted or the light was just coming in right. The wall by the register featured many photos of pets (mostly dogs) that have visited the shoppe, and was fun to look at while the nice lady was getting my order together. I agree that for a beach town breakfast bakery, this place does a decent job. The variety of available goods especially in the afternoon well past breakfast hour on a busy weekend day was impressive. I visited or walked by at least two other bakeries in the Ocean Grove/ Asbury Park area and neither of them had as good of a selection and one was closed by early afternoon.
