Perfect cafe for those of us who love (and need) to get out of the house when WFH. After grabbing lunch across the street at Cardinal, we popped in here, laptops in hand and got some work done. It was the perfect spot for coworking: -Plenty of others had their laptops out. -Wifi was strong. -We didn't feel like we needed to be too quiet, so we could actually talk about work, chat at a normal volume, etc and didn't worry we were disturbing anyone. -Long list of delicious seasonal drinks and classics. I got the pistachio latte and it was so good. Not too sweet at all, just a touch of the pistachio syrup. The space is lovely, with lots of tables set up along the wall and window. This was a small shop. Metered street parking around. Some 2 seater tables inside and there's seating by the window so you can look outside while you enjoy your treat. I ordered a flat white and they had some seasonal options so I asked them to add orange syrup. It had the taste where you shred orange peelings and mix it into your drink. Might be up to taste but I enjoyed that. My order was made quickly and the workers seemed nice. I did think the cup I got was on the small side and I don't remember if they had other sizes. They have some baked good options you can enjoy with your drink. I'm glad I tried it but it seems like a normal coffee shop where I wasn't overly wowed but the quality is good. read more

After several poor coffee drinks in the area, we finally found a place that was good! We had the chai tea latte iced which had a nice spice flavor to it. The shop is very plain but don't let that make you think it is morning. Staff were very friendly. There were some seats inside on a little bar looking at the street or they had a few seats outside. We also had a scone that wasn't too dry. We will go back to this shop next time we are in the area. read more

Drove here specifically to try this place and brought our dog based on the previous reviews of it being dog friendly. I guess those reviews were a little old because they told us we couldn't have the dog. Ordered something specifically and asked if it could be made ice and was told yes and then a woman came over and told him it was only hot. That's not what my friend wanted. Then they were kind of pushy and tried to force a cold brew on him which isn't what we wanted. He ended up adding one of the limited options they had for the iced drinks. It was okay. Also got the maple spiced latte which was also okay but not worth $9. I feel like we were super restricted with our options here and the staff wasn't very friendly. read more

If you are in the area this is absolutely the best coffee spot....in fact it's really the only spot. Their espresso drinks are just average but the drip is good, and they have some lovely little pastries. I like the idea of selling the artwork displayed on the wall and the giant notice board by the milk is performing a community service by providing a place for local, independent artists and makers to promote their services. I am very impressed not only with the cortada coffee that I ordered but also with the business itself. I haven't left a review in a while, not because I don't want to but because I have made a promise to myself that if I have nothing nice to say ( especially online ) I will refrain from saying it. Luckily , that is not the case for café volan. The location and atmosphere is perfect. It's on Bangs street street and it feels very warm and laid back. As I was waiting for my order , I was asked how my day was and engaged in a natural friendly manner that is so rare now that it stands out when it happens. We stopped by here during COVID times and I really liked their method for operating. You never get within six feet of someone because the woman behind the counter stays way back by the espresso machines while you order, and customers order at the door. An interesting thing at this place is that they only have two flavors you can add to your drink: mocha and maple syrup. I went for the mocha which was a break from my usual routine of adding vanilla to my drinks. They also only have large and small sizes. Altogether, I ended up getting an iced coffee (they strictly have cold brew) with cream and mocha. It was super duper yummy and I was happy to have it. Beware though! It was very strong, though the caffeine takes about a half hour to kick in. One other thing to note is that they only accept card payments right now! Would happily return again! read more

I walked in this morning and was told dogs not allowed and that i'd need to bring him outside. I asked if i could order first then take him out. I used to love this place because it does have a cozy vibe & good coffee... but my friends and I have had some bad experiences lately and won't be back. I know several people who have had issues with a man there. Not sure if he is an employee or the owner - grey hair, glasses. I NEVER write reviews but he's extremely condescending and left a very bad taste in my mouth. He basically berated me because I walked in on a very crowded day and grabbed the only seat left without ordering yet (I just wanted to make sure I had a spot to sit!). I opened my laptop to connect to wifi/ respond to a work message quick. He came over twice in the matter of less than 5 minutes to tell me how I can't come in and work without ordering anything when I had already told him (very nicely) I would just be a minute I wasn't sure what I wanted yet. I was planning on staying a few hours, getting a few coffees, and food. His tone was extremely belittling and icky and left me feeling like I wasn't welcome. I felt really uncomfortable so I just left. The same guy has done similar things to friends of mine and it's super bizarre, especially for a coffee shop where so many people will work remote from. It's a shame because it's a spot I used to visit frequently. I'd rather spend my time and money in a place with better vibes :/ read more

Went to Ashbury Park for a walk this Tuesday afternoon in their downtown area and found this hipster coffee shop along the way. We ordered iced chai teas and avocado toasts. You come up by the cashier counter to place your order, pay first and they will call you when your order is ready. The chai tea is ready made and taste great. The avocado toast is on a thick and hearty sliced multi grain bread with avocado spread all over the top, olive oil and sea salt to taste. It's deliciouso! The place is quiet on our weekday afternoon visit. Good place to study while sipping your favorite cafe. The server/cashier is courteous and helpful. Neutral gender bathroom, no changing table. The place is clean and Astrud Gilberto's song is being played. Will be back to this place, next time we come to visit downtown Ashbury Park, NJ. read more

5 stars! I wandered in here for an afternoon caffeine injection and was thoroughly impressed by the coffee! It was an off time, and the shop was empty, which is kinda nice! The space was big and minimalist, and not trying to impress anyone. I am a big fan of macchiatos - which are SUPPOSED to be, espresso with a small amount of milk, usually foamed. Thanks to our big chain stores, they're usually served with more milk than espresso. When I saw the macchiato on the menu, I innocently asked how they made them - and it was so joyous to hear the barista's (or baristo?? it was a guy) response like a song - espresso with a dash of steamed milk. DAMN good. We bonded over our frustration of ruined macchiatos! The menu is simple, and the place is clean. Not really looking for much more in a neighborhood coffee shop, so I was happy. Fun fact, Maiden Coffee Roasters is their own coffee, and they've been making it there for about 4 years, I believe. It was delicious coffee, full and flavorful, and served with a smile. To my surprise, there aren't many breakfast joints open at 9 am in Asbury Park on a Saturday. Because of that, there was a pretty hefty wait for a table at Toast, which I wasn't really down with. We ended up stumbling upon Cafe Volan, and although they have a pretty small food menu it definitely hit the spot. My avocado toast was perfect. The multigrain bread was thick and hearty, and it came smothered with fresh avocado, olive oil and sea salt. To wash everything down, I went with a maple flavored iced coffee which was refreshing and had just the right amount of sweet. I hate eating a big breakfast pre-beach, and this was such a great way to start off the day. I'll also mention that the interior is adorable, the staff is friendly and there is plenty of seating available. Next time I'm in Asbury Park I'll definitely be returning to Cafe Volan for an avo toast and an iced coffee! read more

We were completely stuffed as we were waddling back to our car when this wonderful aroma lead us by our noses to this coffee shop. This is a true coffee shop for coffee aficionados. The barista there truly made this beautiful leaf in my latte and my husbands drip coffee was bold and full bodied. They also have baked goods that they do not make. They stick to what they do best which is coffee. Instead, they purchase and resell scones from Seed and Sprout (top shelf) and the next two were Bathzar bakery. Extraordinary delicious scones to accompany the coffees. The people who work there are completely knowledgable of coffees, espressos etc and they are vegan friendly. They also offer almond & soy milk. Will definitely be back. Starbucks could learn a lot from this place. read more

I came here to study, and stayed about 5 hours. Parking is by the hour on the street, $0.50/hour for off hourly rates. The cafe was a little warm, but not stifling and it had background music playing, but not enough to be distracting. Most of the clientele weren't disruptive and I was able to get some work done. When first arriving, I ordered a raspberry marscapone toast and an almond milk latte. The latte art, wasn't very clear, and I know it can be difficult to do with almond milk. I love the toast! It's perfectly crispy and full of whole grain goodness. Upon questioning, I was told the bread was from Balthazar, which I'm assuming is from NYC, though the barista wasn't sure. Cute detail: the owner's mother makes some of the baked goods. The latte was smooth. I stayed long enough where I got hungry again and ordered an iced coffee and the hummus toast. Another dose of yum. I believe the iced coffee was made from a cold brew, as it didn't have that acidic taste. Free wifi and clean bathrooms were a plus. While I ended up spending about $20 in the 5 hours I stayed there, I liked the chill atmosphere and both the food and coffee were good. I would like to see a greater variety of options, maybe yogurt parfaits or something, so the whole food menu isn't all pastries and things carb-y. read more

The Deets: Sometimes you just want a good simple local coffee shop to chill out at and relax with some joe. Café Volan is this type of place, up and down. It's a unassuming little place, and you'll need to carefully look for it along Bangs Ave to find it. You'll find metered parking spaces in front, convenient. Once inside, a lot of wood constructs with cool modest accents await you...as I said, chill and unassuming. Local art adorns the walls and I like it, very interesting stuff. They do offer wifi, and you see a good number of people enjoying their caffeine and eats while working away. Mentioning the caffeine, the coffee drinks I've had there are great. I enjoyed my skinny latte there on my last visit a lot, and was topped with great "coffee art" to boot. They also offer a good array of baked goods to have with your beverage to have some light bite eats to get you through the day. Only thing I'd offer for feedback...I didn't get that "warm fuzzy" feel interacting at the counter. Not a lot of smiles and positive vibes, I hope it may be just having a bad day kind of thing though. However for excellent coffee and nice baked goods in a great local shop kind of atmosphere, Café Volan is the place in Asbury Park. read more
