Our group of 3 came in around 5:30 pm on a Friday evening. My dad had just flown in and had been looking for a place to get Vietnamese escargot for forever, so he was so excited when I brought him here. It's a small plaza but there was plenty of parking. We were greeted quickly and sat in one of many booths. Service was quick. The man working was very helpful and brought us everything my dad asked for right away! We ordered the escargot, of course, and although it doesn't compare to the ones he had in Vietnam (he claims it would need more lemongrass), it was still really great! Love the coconut flavour so much. You also get so much of it! The oysters were huge. I feel like they were a bit dry but the crunchy peanuts and garlic on top were great. The salt and pepper squid was very crispy and unique. Absolutely loved the flavour! The star of the show was the hot pot. We ordered the sweet and sour (canh chua) with catfish. Such a nostalgic dish and I loved the way they prepared it (more sweet). It came with noodles, vegetables, and too much fish for us (which we took home). Highly recommend this little gem! Honestly, I'm so happy to have come across the OC House in the PDX area. I visit Portland pretty often, but I only recently found out about this place through a good gym friend of mine. I dined here with a few friends, and we all really enjoyed it. We ordered several dishes to share, and everything was absolutely delicious. The escargot lotus salad had the perfect crunch in every bite and came with shrimp chips on the side. The snails in coconut sauce were my absolute favorite--so rich and flavorful! The sour soup catfish hotpot was a must-try! They served a generous amount of fish, a side of vermicelli noodles, and a full plate of fresh veggies. It was more than enough to feed the four of us. The service here was great especially since they are understaffed. There is usually one man running around and taking orders. I have so much respect for his work ethic. I hate to have to rate this place so low but our experience with the food here was absolutely not worth it. Ambiance is sports bar vibes with Vietnamese mtv playing on the TVs. It's clean. The food here is abysmal. I think it definitely caters more to the late night drinking type of clientele who doesn't care much about what they are eating because they faded and the taste buds are gone. For a place called oc house (literally translates to shellfish house) they don't prep the seafood (shellfish) well at all. We got the grilled pen scallop and it was overcooked and rubbery. Reminded me of freezer burn cooked shellfish. The lemon pepper sauce they serve with it is good though. The shellfish here is not fresh at all. The pepper salted squid was ok but not great, super bland and small portioned for what you get for it almost being $20. We also ordered the lotus salad which in traditional Vietnamese cuisine the sweet and spicy fish sauce that's drizzled over it is aromatic and garlicky. The fish sauce served with this was not savory and sweet but just watered down fish sauce, it made the dish very stale and salty. And for some reason our dish tasted like crab even though this dish only has boiled shrimp, pork belly slices, and lotus root. This was a strange one to see them mess up. The banh canh cua (thick crab udon) was super disappointing as the broth was very flavorless but also super rank (not the good kind). It tasted like ketchup broth. There was also a giant frozen freezer burn disc of what looked like crab meat in the bottom of my bowl. This bowl of noodle was serviced with thinly sliced beef which was meh. I likely won't return, I really hope the owners hire a better chef because the one they have currently now isn't good. Or if they are cutting corners with quality in the food it definitely shows. This place is definitely on the more "delicacy" side of Vietnamese dishes. You won't find the traditional Pho and Vermicelli bowls here. They have escargot, clams, squid, etc. The food comes out hot and ready when ordered. The service was quick as long as you grab their attention. The portions itself were fairly small for the price. Some of their seafood dishes, you can taste that they were frozen and then reheated/steamed as you order (not as fresh). The place itself feels like a Vietnamese bar. There's Vietnamese music playing, fairly open, but a little dark. I don't have any complaints about it though, I think it fits the vibe. read more

Was super excited to try this place with our family. I came for the seafood but others did not. For seafood we ordered: grilled scallops, grilled squid, balut egg, Razor clams, and snails. For entrees we ordered: crispy noodles, fried rice, shaken beef, fish in clay pot, and beef and macaroni Every dish looked appetizing but they definitely take more care with their seafood. The seafood dishes taste and attention to toppings and sides which is the star of this place but sad to say anything else was just bland. I'd like to see Oc House's reviews improved! I had a great time. They specialize in serving Vietnamese "nhau" food, which means food that goes well with alcohol/beer! Ambiance: I liked the atmosphere here. I didn't go during peak hours so I can't say how noisy or packed it can get, but the place was clean and spacious. I also appreciate that it had a little parking lot with maybe 10-12 spaces. Food: My husband and I ordered the combination fried rice, which comes with Chinese sausages, shrimp, squid, and eggs topped with crispy fried onion bits. I loveeddd the fried rice! Portion was big too so had some left over to take home. We also ordered the fish sauce fried chicken wings and the salt and pepper prawns, which came grilled on skewers. Both were good, especially the prawns. Ask for a side of soy sauce and chili oil to dip. Price: Everything seemed fairly priced. I used to live in Orange County in Southern CA, the mecca of Vietnamese food in the US. They have similar places that service Vietnamese street/drinking food like Oc & Lau, and the prices at Oc House are comparable. Service: Our service was great. He wasn't the type that would automatically bring things out, but he will bring them out quickly and politely if you ask him. For example, when the chicken wings came out, all we had were small bowls for rice. We asked for small plates, chili oil, and soy sauce and he quickly got those things for us. My family loves this place... like any true Vietnamese family would haha. This spot is a great spot for those that want an authentic "drinking" meal AKA most of the dishes here you would find at a family party that engages in too much alcohol consumption and wants something tasty to accompany the drinking. Don't expect to come here for exceptional service - you will most likely have to flag down a server if you want attention. On to the food! All the dishes here are made to order so yes, you will experience a wait time but with any seafood dish, fresh is better than frozen. Which is also a downside because often times they won't have a dish in stock because it's not "in season" but trust me when I say that you will not be disappointed with the items that they do have available. My favorite here is the grilled squid - the green dipping chili sauce it comes with is bomb! The squid is so tender as well and I love the charred flavor on it. Really can't go wrong with any of the seafood dishes as well, although sometimes they come a bit sandy which is annoying. Came here on a Sunday evening around 6pm. We were seated quickly. There were a lot of kids running around the restaurant, which was a bit off-putting. To make matters worse, they were out of a lot of things on their menu. This ruined the excitement as we had to scramble and choose new dishes to order while the waiter tried to remember what was still available. Overall, the dining experience was okay. Portion sizes were good. The grilled clam, mussels, and squid weren't terrible. I liked the crispy onions served with the seafood. These were my favorite dishes of the night. The green seafood dipping sauce was actually quite good. The combination fried rice and baby clam stir fry were lackluster and bland - I don't recommend them. I wouldn't go out of my way to come here, especially since the availability of the menu is so unreliable. However, if you're looking to try something new that isn't widely offered in Portland, this is a decent place to go! Definitely a go to spot for us as the grilled squid is not an option at many restaurants. Its so delicious with their special cilantro sauce that puts an exploding flavorful taste to your squid as a dipping sauce. Kid you not, my hubs and I were here 4 times and the squid was sold out. Oc has always been my one of my beloved Vietnamese street food. It's nothing but bizarre food on a plate. My family and I came to Oc house for the first time trying a variety of different oc dishes and soup. We wanted to try oysters, octopus, and blood clam but many items were out due to busy weekend. Many of the dishes were very bland to me. Just the same note. Tamarind sauce is sweet to me and not very much on the tart or savory note. We ordered Vietnamese sour soup catfish but it was very bland like a plain broth rather than soup. Only slightly sweet and a hint of tart of tamarind is all I could tasted. Most oc n the catfish for sour soup doesn't taste fresh, mostly previously frozen seafood. The quail was also very dry and chewy. The best tasting dish for me would probably be obtuse horn shell steamed in coconut. I'd give their food 2.5/5. Service is also mediocre. Very slow for a non busy place snd didn't received much helped. 2/5 I ordered a lychee cocktail. It was yummy tasting. Just the right amount of liquor for a fruit cocktail with lychee fruits. I'm sure their other drinks are just as good! Good place to go if you're craving oc or wanting to try something exotic! This is the place for it! We ordered the coconut snails, they were tiny and hard to get them out of the shell. They did cut the ends of the shell to make it easier to suck. But a lot of work for very little meat. The canh ga chien nuoc mam is kinda pricey. Who would expect that fried chicken fish sauce cost would be equivalent to the Oc, but you're not here for the chicken. This isn't your typical Vietnamese restaurant: there's no Pho, Cha Gio, or any of the usual rice combos. Seafood seems to be the focus, dishes scream "authentic", and the overall menu is a pleasant surprise of the unfamiliar. There's an eye for presentation as all our entrees were delivered with some flare. The clams were good, the sauces even better (especially the green one.) Scallops were equally full of flavor. Their version of my favorite Vietnamese dish, Bo Luc Lac (Shaking Beef) was a little tough, but the sauce was good and portion ample. It's difficult to top Bluefin Bar & Grill's version of this scrumptious beef. I was eager to try their avocado smoothie or smashed avocado smoothie (not sure about the difference), but had to settle for fresh mango as they were out. Seafood portions are small, service speed and friendliness about normal, parking easy, and the atmosphere is understated. This is where all the Vietnam come together to drink and get drunk. From the moment you step in you can taste the fish sauce and hear loud chattering from all angles. Oc House in translation means grill so that is what you shall expect. Before uprooting to the Pacific Northwest, I had one of my last good meals at a similar place back in Orange County. It was F%&#*ING delicious and I was hoping this would bring back memories. Flash forward to present time. We were seated fairly quickly and we did not take too long to decide on what to get. An dish of razor and blood clams along with a small seafood hot pot. For two, this was plenty. For being seated and taking our orders quickly, they sure were slower at getting our food out. The clams came out one by one and they took 15 minutes long for each of them. When the last clam dish came out, it took another 15 minutes for our hotpot to be ready when it was clearly already done and sitting by the counter. It's right there! In all fairness, the clams WERE good though. The garlic, onion, and butter sauce is pretty hard to dislike especially when it's grilled. The seafood hotpot was also very tasty and enough to share. So, yes the food was good. And would be an excellent choice to drink with. In fact, it felt like this was more of a bar. The portions are on the smaller end though and I felt as if they purposely brought out your food slowly so they can get you to drink more. Drink to get drunk and get drunk to spend more. **Pro Tip: Bring some instant noodles if you order their hotpot and dump it in. Trust me. Overall, the taste of everything was good.
