When we pulled into the parking lot at Oaky's Tavern, it was absolutely packed. We figured we'd be waiting quite a while, especially since we were hoping to sit outside. We didn't end up getting an outdoor table, but we were pleasantly surprised when they seated us almost immediately. Our server was fantastic and very attentive throughout the meal. We had read a few reviews mentioning slow service, but that definitely wasn't our experience. We were 100% satisfied with the service we received. The food was delicious, and there were a lot of great options on the menu. Prices were what you'd expect for this type of restaurant, and we thought everything was well worth it. The atmosphere was fun and welcoming, and the whole place had a great vibe. We were really impressed with Oaky's Tavern and would definitely recommend it to anyone in the Interlochen area. We dined in with a large party. Unfortunately they refuse to take reservations. We were told they lose money that way. That makes no sense, but that's their policy. I arrived 60 mins before the rest of our large party was to arrive to put our name down. It was a 45 min wait. It was a Thursday evening and this place was hopping. Tons of people coming in and putting their name down to get a table. I'd definitely arrive well ahead of the time you want to actually eat to accommodate this. The parking lot is tricky as well as there were barely any spots and many would drive in and not find a spot and then drive out. Once we were seated, we had great service. First, we haven't been to Oaky's in ages, so imagine our surprise to see the remodel, both inside and out! All the uneven flooring is gone, thank goodness. While there is charm in old buildings with slightly wavy floors, these needed the update. Very fresh and light now, beautiful place to dine. We went a little early for dinner, so we were seated right away. By the time we left, there was a wait. We started with some bevs, the lavender blackberry lemonade was amazing, which two of us ordered and loved. Our spouses had local beers and were happy too. We also ordered the Oaky Dokie Bites, an app of little round fried bites of cornbread served with hot honey to dip. Fun food, but not sure I'd order them again. Three of us ordered the special, Fried Michigan walleye fish and chips. One subbed onion rings for fries, while I subbed tots, for mine. We were all very happy with our orders. Fish was fresh and sides were yummy. Hubby got a burger and thought it was excellent. The only downside was how long it took to get our dinners. More than half an hour, and we were early for dinner. I don't mind waiting for food when a restaurant is slammed, that is just how it goes. But we waited so long my husband actually went to check on our food, which is really out of character for him. Not sure if our order was misplaced or something else happened, but it did put a damper on the experience, which otherwise, was great. This place has a great menu. Not one person in our party of 15 was displeased with their order. I personally had the wings with buffalo sauce & a side house salad. Both were fantastic. My wife had the coconut shrimp & the Lobster chowder. She let me try both & they were phenomenal. Our waitress was excellent. She checked on us multiple times & never missed a beat. We were seated on the back deck. It was a chilly July evening with temps in the low 60's. Thankfully there was a plastic barrier to keep the wind off of us. The ladies in our group were cold, so our hostess turned on the exterior electric heaters & the place warmed right up. It was the best dining experience we've had whilst up here on vacation. I'd like to comment on a prior review. The road construction almost made us choose the golf course pub but are we glad we chose Oaky's Tavern. I had the Smokehouse Burger & wife had the wings. It was wings Wednesdays so $1.00 a wing (we didn't realize). We shared a "basket" of fries. This was a fantastic burger, but my wife added that wings were very close to best she's ever had. And the fries, OMG, so hot and too many to finish! If we're ever back in Interlochen camping a visit to Oaky's will be made. read more

Loved it. We started out at the bar with some Michigan draft beers. The bartender was excellent as was the beer. The 4 of us sat on the covered porch for lunch. Maggie was our server. She was quite pleasant and attentive to our needs. I had the Tater Tots with Buffalo Sauce and Blue Cheese. Other than being soggy from the sauce, they were quite tasty. I had an order of 10 Smoked Chicken Wings pieces tossed in a Garlic Herb sauce. Very tasty. I had a bowl of the Lobster Chowder. Wow - really good. My wife had the French Dip with Onion Rings. This was my second time visiting Oaky's tavern. All around, I was pretty satisfied again with my visit, so if I could do 3.5 stars I would. Again, you can tell this is a locals place, with people greeting each other on a first name basis and full of regulars. The service was prompt, friendly, and attentive. We were seated, attended to quickly, and brought our food all in good time. Patio was cool and comfortable with good spacing between tables. I had the grilled salmon with steamed vegetables. The salmon was cooked just right with good seasoning and nice, smoky flavor from the grill, herb butter and other herbs on top all delicious. I was hoping for a little more than just a large crown of broccoli, but at least the broccoli was cooked right and tasty as well. My daughter had the Caesar salad-no additions. Salad was a generous portion with croutons and shredded parm, but there was way too much dressing for anyone's taste. By the time she got to the bottom of the salad it was like "I'll have some salad with my dressing." And while the dressing was not bad, it was not the house made, tangy, zesty dressing you would want to eat spoonfuls of. I can only speculate but I do not think it was house made, which is what makes good go to great, or excellent go to spectacular. So that didn't happen. All in all a satisfying, consistent meal, and balance this out with my other 4 star rating and we have 3.5 stars all around. read more

Located just around the corner from my friend's house where I was staying in Interlochen, Oaky's Tavern is in such a random location while also having some of the most delicious food ever! You're driving down the street and then it's just there, a clearing in the trees, and you pull off into their gravel parking lot and head on in! Well for us, we headed to the side where their patio is because we had a few dogs with us! yes, Oaky's has a patio and it is dog friendly! The staff were so accomodating with our dogs, especially given that one of ours is a service dog in training. They left our dogs alone and didn't give them too much attention even though I know they really wanted to - and that's a really hard thing to do! At the same time, they made sure the dogs were well taken care of and had water bowls brought out and checked in on if we needed anything else! My friend and I got the chicken wings app and their loaded Caesar salad with salmon on it to share. Again, they were so lovely and were able to bring out our salad and salmon already separated in half for us, truly above and beyond, and I so appreciated that! All the food was so delicious and exactly what we wanted and needed in that moment. We left with our stomachs feeling very happy! My main complaint is the MOSQUITOS! Man alive, the service here was so fast so we were seated and done eating in under an hour, but the mosquitos did not play around and I got bit so so so many times - I counted 15 bites just from sitting on Oaky's patio for less than an hour. Given that they are located in a space right next to a whole forest of trees, this is definitely something to watch out for. It was unreal and I really wished Oaky's patio had anything to help combat the mosquitos - maybe plant some lemongrass in the area, citronella candles stationed throughout the patio in tiki torches and on tables, something - anything!! Maybe different chairs as well since their chairs had the waffle pattern and I was being bit on the backs of my legs and butt THROUGH the chair :'). So that's the only thing I would watch out for if you're going to sit on the patio, especially as it gets warmer and warmer throughout summer. In fact, the evening we went in early June was actually pretty cold, so I was surprised by just how much I was getting attacked. read more

Our first time here and we were served promptly and seated in our preferred seating, the service was warm and welcoming. The inside has a modern feel, and it's cozy. We ordered our drinks and a meal for my son, as well as an appetizer. The drinks, appetizer, and my son's meal all came out and a good pace. However, when it came to our food there was a little bit of a wait, around 15 minutes or so. I ordered the Bayou Mac, and my wife got the New York strip. The food was great, all in all a solid 4 stars. We will definitely be back to try some of the other enticing menu items! read more

My Husband & I are mixed on this review... Here's what's up: food was good, service was struggling. We came here at 1:10 pm on a Thursday afternoon. The place wasn't packed, but there was still a bit of a crowd. We noticed 4 total wait staff running the floor, each had about 4-5 tables. We were sat right away, and one waitress took our drink order. Another delivered the drinks and said she would be taking over. Waitress knew the menu well as we had a few questions about some of the items. She was very kind and patient, especially when one of my toddlers spilled some water. She took our food order and placed it - I was slightly indecisive as I was trying to pick something my toddlers might eat as well. My husband ordered the fish & chips, I ordered the smoked turkey club, and we had an app of the sweet potato fries. Food took about 15 minutes from when we placed our order to when we got our plates. Sweet Potato Fries: very good, no funky seasonings like some of the ones we've had. Would've been great if they had a special sauce to go with it. Fish & Chips: Fish was great! My husband said it was one of the better fish he's had. The fries were okay, thicker than you typically get so we didn't care for the cook on them. They were dryer? If that makes sense... Smoked Turkey Club: good, but boring. That's my fault, as I was trying to pick something my kids might eat with me. But the bread it was on was way too tough, and the one slice of bacon was also tough. There was also a lot of mayo which I was put off by as it overtook the flavor. I noticed some other tables have some very tasty looking plates like the Mac with BBQ and some taco plates. Would go back to try those maybe. Service: our waitress was very nice, but unfortunately was not very present after our food was delivered. She came by one after the food was brought out to see how the first couple of bites were. But then we never saw her again. After we finished our food, which takes a while with toddlers, we waited another 15 minutes for our bill. I ended up going to the front and asking to be checked out because my babes were starting to become unsettled. The waitress that cashed me out was very polite and took the time to run my card even tho she had other tables to tend to. While doing so, our waitress walked by and said sorry. We'd give it another try because the other food looked delicious, but we hope service would be more attentive, refills were offered, etc. read more

I have been here multiple times throughout numerous ownerships. I personally schedule any doctors appointments for me or my elders on Wednesday's in Traverse City (I live out of TC) just to come to Oaky's for their chicken wing special. I have held off on this review, because I didn't want my negative experience to a dramatic effect on my rating. I had high hopes for Oaky's. It came highly recommended by friends and family, but I had such a negative experience, it ruined the dinner for me. I ordered the NY strip "rare plus," which usually isn't an issue for restaurants to prepare. I made sure to tell the server that I wanted the temperature just a hint over rare. Even if overcooked a bit, at worst, it is medium rare. When I received the steak, the temperature was closer to medium than it was medium rare. I asked our server, who was wonderful, to take care of the issue. What happened next was something I have never experienced in any restaurant. A gentleman, either a manager or back-of-house employee, approached me with the steak I sent back and asked in a very curt tone: "you want your steak rarer than this?" I politely, or as politely as I could based on his tone, explained that the steak was overcooked, tough, and that I would prefer the new steak to be rare. That way it could be refired if necessary. After a very brief wait (kudos to the kitchen), he returned with the new steak. However, he made sure to make another snarky comment by saying: "I hope it's right, it barely touched the grill." He then asked me to cut into it to assure it was cooked properly, which it was. After about another 10 minutes or so, the same employee returned to the table to double check that I was satisfied with the new steak. To me, it seemed disingenuous and was meant as a damage-control tactic more than anything. I had been here several times before when it was a cozy restaurant and you could relax and have a nice dinner. I had not been back since it has been renovated to look like an airport. Our host said "Are you willing to take that table?" and pointed to a high top in the foyer, often filled with crowds of boisterous people. We asked if there was space outside (numerous empty tables were visible) and were met with a crisp "No." Then our server (the entire staff seems to be 20yo women with no experience with humans) starts the barrage of "Want drinks? Want apps? Ready to order? Ready now? Ready now? Ready now?" We were used to having a pleasant meal at our own pace, but we were being processed and milked for money. When we spoke to the manager she said we should have told her about the seating and rushing. Yes, you see, it's OUR FAULT. The manager took no responsibility whatsoever and we were left feeling she didn't listen to us at all. We will never go back. You should never come here. We both had their lobster chowder, and it was delicious and had more lobster meat than any other lobster chowder I've had. My husband also had the ribs, which were tasty and tender.
