I am writing this review because of the deeply disappointing experience my daughter had while working at Brookdale Senior Living. From the very beginning, she was given no proper training or guidance. Instead of being supported, she was belittled and disrespected by her superior, Alex. She endured constant unprofessional behavior, including being talked about, laughed at, and singled out unfairly. No employee deserves to feel discriminated against or humiliated in their workplace, especially in a setting that should be centered on compassion and care for seniors. Brookdale Senior Living failed to provide a respectful, supportive environment. What should have been an opportunity to serve the elderly community turned into a toxic experience. I cannot recommend this facility as a positive place of employment. read more

We should all be so fortunate as to have such hard working and caring staff taking care of our elders. It is backbreaking and emotionally exhausting and it makes me sick to death that most of these workers are low income women, young people and women of color who are so underappreciated and devalued in our society. The campus is pretty and the building is in okay condition. It could certainly use an upgrade...new carpets and paint but for the most part it is clean and well managed. read more

Over sold and under delivered. If you are looking for a place for the senior in your life --look elsewhere! I actually suggest running away. Confusion abounds continuously at Brookdale! The discrepancies are too many to name. First family onboarding and communication was inconsistent and confusing. Second billing is a nightmare. This place hasn't gone by the name Oak Tree Villa for many years. When my mom moved in 7 years ago it was already under Brookdale management. She was mostly independent except for needing medication management and it worked out well. Brookdale has deteriorated over the years. It has a high staff turnover rate including the director. The staff doesn't seem to be paid properly or get raises so they leave. Sometimes there is only one caregiver working for the whole place of about 200 apartments. I don't know how many residents there are but many have left. I got my mom out after they mistakenly stopped a medication that contributed to her falling and breaking her leg. She's much safer now. There are a few really nice people working there who care about the residents but I doubt they'll stay much longer. It is really sad to see how it's changed. It looks lovely and was great when my mom first lived there. Now the care is so poor that the residents wait hours for someone to respond. It's really only good for someone who is independent and doesn't need to rely on the staff for anything. The food is still excellent, but that's all. read more

My mom is at Brookdale in Scotts Valley (formerly Oak Tree Villa) currently. The two stars are for the environment--they really go all out on making it cheerful and fun. They have great decorations and a festive atmosphere. The staff is very nice. The lack of other stars is for the corporate entity, which I assume is responsible for the following: --We (my siblings and I) have a very hard time getting anyone in administrative staff to call us back to address matters of billing and charges. Mistakes are made in charges. They avoid addressing these. --The monthly charge has risen by more than 50% in two years --They charge over $700/month to give her one multivitamin and one melatonin a day read more

As a former employee this is long overdue. October 2008 I just turned 16 and Brookdale senior living was my first job. Started off working as a waiter at the dining hall and moved up the ranks throughout the dining and kitchen. A position opened in the maintenance department, by then I was 20 and two years later at 22 a friend of mine who was a senior was suffering from dementia and the family left behind some very valuable items in the room. I returned the valuables to the executive director and the family got their mothers belongings back. Integrity and hardwork throughout this company doesn't get rewarded or given a possible raise from the company. After that experience I'm truly glad I left this company. I believe that's why all the staff here don't give a damn about the residents because why go the extra mile to put $$ in the company's pocket. Last time I was here I was kindly introduced by the previous director of the Brookedale resort. SHE was great & The staff was great but unfortunately they're pretty low on help. Recently they've switched some of their management around, and replaced the director who REALLY is not friendly. I'm just a visitor, and I'm not comfortable around her. she keeps her door closed all day, and doesn't talk to any of the tenants... which is sad considering how involved some of the other people who work here are... Overall it's a cozy place, their management just needs to tie up some ends before it gets worse... read more

A few weeks ago all the staff and residents had to be evacuated to sister facilities in the community due to forest fires. For an older generation, this was/is such a difficult event for them to understand and therefore difficult for staff to execute and maintain the logistics, while considering the emotions of their residents. Due to virus travel restrictions and living in Houston, Texas, being the primary responsible person for Bill could have been very difficult if it had not been for the reassuring emails from the leadership at Brookdale Scotts valley, Maria, and her staff; this could have been the makings for a "Home Alone Senior Addition". While some family members might be too short sighted to see the wonderful work being done...I see it very clearly. I think that during these very difficult times, under all the new craziness our nation is experiencing, I just have to give a big thank you to this wonderful and hard working group. Just image being responsible for the logistics of moving over a hundred older persons with varying physical and mental issues to distant facilities and while dealing with the individual family worries and insuring all the health standards are maintained. No Way! Maria and her staff are employees of Brookdale, but because of their care, determination, and professionalism they to have had to merge their own life's into longer hours, additional stress and personal space. They are just awesome ! After living at Oaktree/Brookdale for three+ years, my father's health deteriorated after a two month hospitalization. This started with me going to pick my Dad up for breakfast. He usually waits for me at the front door and walks out to my car. He wasn't there. I get out, walk in and ask the receptionist if she knows where my Dad is. I'm told he's in his room waiting for the nurse because he thinks he had a stroke during the night. WHAT? I wasn't called! And now he's sitting in his room, alone, waiting for a nurse? Ever heard of 911? I went to management to give a thirty day notice to move him to a smaller facility where he would get more personalized care. I was assured by the Executive Director, the Marketing Director and the Head Caregiver that there was no need to move my Dad, that Brookdale could provide all of the care he needed. And, because we had moved in three years prior, our service rates were capped. After discussing this with my Dad, he decided to stay at Brookdale because he knew the people and he had friends there. Little did I know this was the beginning of a huge nightmare! There were times my Dad called me because he had been waiting 45 minutes for someone to take him to the bathroom, or times he would want to go to bed but there would be no Brookdale caregiver available to put him to bed. Then we were told that because he was having too many "accidents", we were going to be charged for extra laundry each week. When my Dad became frightened to be alone at night, rather than just check on him, I was required to hire a nighttime caregiver. This cost me $1400 a week, in addition to the amount I was paying Brookdale monthly! When the personal caregiver would call the front desk for transfer help, she would also have to wait up to 40 minutes for a Brookdale caregiver to show up. My Dad was told more than once there was no Brookdale staff to put him to bed at 8:30 pm and he would need to wait until his caregiver came at 10 pm. Shortly after hiring the nighttime caregiver, I was told I would need to hire a day time caregiver. At this point, I decided to move my Dad! I went to the Executive Director and told her I was moving my Dad because they could not provide the care Brookdale had said they could. She said the place I was moving Dad to had the same license and could not provide any different care than they do. She could not have been more wrong! The staff is very attentive, their response time is usually under a minute, and my Dad is always treated with kindness and respect. My only regret is not moving him sooner. Brookdale is in need of a major overhaul. Everything you have read in the other reviews is real. The problems do exist. Family members - talk to people who live there, talk to the newly formed Family Council, go to the Scotts Valley Police Department and ask to see the logs from the past few years. Know the facts before you move your family member in. Don't be fooled by the fluff. It may not be happening to every family, but the fact that it happens at all is not OK. read more

The rents are raised every year but services do not improve. There is a current class action suit against Brookdale Senior Living. You can google it and read all about it. This place is not worth the money they charge to live there read more

My experience with Brookdale Scotts Valley (formerly Oak Tree Villa) was 99% positive. My mother spent 3 years there and passed away there under Hospice Care at the age of 95. She was well cared for and happy with her living environment. I too was very pleased with the staff's attitude and abilities. Even in my mother's most difficult moments she was treated respectfully and patiently. Besides being supported by the staff at Brookdale she was also well received by the other residents. She had aphasia after her stroke (inability to speak) yet the other residents welcomed her at meals and in the common areas. As an assisted living facility Brookdale is not perfect, no such residence is but it far exceeded my expectations and those of my mother. I would not hesitate to refer a friend or other family member there. I see several poor reviews revolving around the past theft situation there. My mother lived there through that time period and there was a problem. The security was improved as a result. I don't feel that that issue should over-shadow all the good that the facility has provided. Ruth Elliot (the executive director) has done a superb job of hiring and managing since she took over her position. She has set a tone in the "home" of everyone helping each other out that makes Brookdale Scotts Valley a pleasure to live at. They have my thanks and respect for years of caring for my mother. Over 12 Robberies in the month of June not counting Mays reports. Maggots preying on the elderly. Sad commentary on a publicly traded company that continues to not take the necessary steps to insure its elderly residents are secured via security cameras, etc. for the amount of rent & other charges one would think that it would be a safe & secure facility but that's far from the facts. This place is for an active, healthy Senior situation, only. Please, do not let them sell you on the extended care or 24 hour nursing / aid support. It's more like a "used car sale" deal with all the bells and whistles up front, then after the sale.....Oak Tree definitely came up short on their promises. My Grandmother's jewelry was stolen, along with other residents. SVPD has this on record. Calling the call button at night with no response, was only one of the short comings to mention about this establishment. We relocated her, happily so. read more

oak tree villa was there for my mom all the way , they treated her with respect and dignity. there is a nurse on staff 24 hours a day to help with moms needs. the care takers are awesome helping mom with what she needed, even if it was just to get her the remote she dropped. the food there was very classy and delicious. i have not had a bad experience with anyone there. mom loved all the activities expecially the exercise in the morning. read more
