While she was very reluctant to move, her comment about Sunny View was that it felt more like a home than an institution. Her initial instinct has proved to be spot on. Unlike some of the other places they visited, they have always been treated as individuals deserving of understanding and compassion. Our family was pleasantly surprised at how quickly the staff responded to the needs of my parents as they made the very difficult transition of moving from their home of 45 years to a two bedroom apartment (villa). All the different areas (marketing, maintenance, housekeeping, food services, nursing staff) went way beyond what was expected to help them settle in and become part of the community. We even had some unexpected challenges that the staff addressed with kindness and much patience. In addition, the staff seem to communicate well with each other. While the grounds are beautiful (mature trees and multiple garden areas) and there are some new features including an aviary in the Assisted Living area, it is the people that make the difference. Not only have the staff been very respectful and kind, but the residents were very welcoming to my folks. I'm very comfortable knowing that my elderly parents are surrounded by loving people.

While moving into a senior community was a big adjustment, my Dad has come to really appreciate it and generally, every resident I talk to seems very happy at the Forum (you should ask residents you see how they like it when you visit). Some of the other benefits I've seen about the Forum are: * Management and management structure - The Executive Director (Nancy is great) and her management team and the staff are friendly and genuinely care about the residents, the cleanliness of the facilities, and the service provided. Additionally, the Forum is a non-profit benefit corp and is run somewhat like an HOA where the owners/residents have the ability to substantially influence overall policy and items important to them (e.g. food, entertainment, services, etc.). One key difference from a normal HOA is that the owners have the time and desire to make this model work as it requires participation to do so. * The naturally beautiful setting of Rancho San Antonio that surrounds the Forum - While not everyone takes advantage of all the hiking trails, just being in nature provides a relaxing, healthy setting. This is quite different from some of the senior centers that are in more urban settings. * Health facilities, library, ample activity spaces, planned activities (movies, presentations, etc,) and excursions (off site), many grassroots activity groups...uhh a wood shop? keep things more interesting while the services free residents up from the daily challenges (cooking, cleaning, etc.) and give them more time to enjoy. * Full continuum of care - You start of in independent living in a condo unit or stand-alone villa. Should your health needs and ability to live independently change, they have skilled nursing and assisted living facilities right there as well as a new memory care facility (on a fee for service basis after you sell your independent living unit). * Very pet friendly with many folk owning dogs, cats, other critters and visiting pets welcome. * Resident happiness - Perhaps the most important gauge is that I'm still surprised at the general level of satisfaction I sense from the residents ... and I visit pretty regularly. If your family is looking into senior living communities, check the Forum out!

Following four back-to-back admissions at Stanford University Medical Center, my current client ended up staying in three SNFs, one after the other, from October 2023 to February 2024. Based on our experience, of the three top-tier facilities that he had stayed in, The Forum at Rancho San Antonio is the undisputed creme de la creme. It's not perfect (as no organization is), but it's the best and the only place that I would recommend to a client or a loved one if s/he lives in Northern California. Aside from its enviable location - the feeling that one's staying in a nature reserve - The Forum's key differentiating proposition is its people. They know what they're doing and why they're doing it: to improve the health and the well-being of its residents. I am very hands-on in my approach to patient care so I spent almost as much time as my client during his more than two-month stay at The Forum at Rancho San Antonio. I was there with him for an entire day, from breakfast to dinner, and during his therapy sessions, every single day for over 60 days. The only thing I didn't do was spend the night there. So one could say that I have some intimate knowledge about why this place ticks. It is the affability, creativity, perseverance and good humor of its Admission & Marketing Director Sabrina, its Rehab Director Ratika (who assembled the best team of PTs, OTs and ST under one roof!), its Health Center Administrator, its Social Worker Chandra, its Dietician, its Director of Nursing Tess and her wonderful team of caring and knowledgeable nurses (especially MJ, Caroline, Karen, Gladys, Fili & Teresita) & their assistant Annie, its CNAs (especially Joy, Judith, Margarita, Yodith and Amansale), its Activity coordinators Alice & Lourdes, its Kitchen crew (especially Eva) and its EMS staff. And yes, the food at The Forum at Rancho San Antonio is delicious. My client, who owned a famous restaurant back in the day, never complained about the meals and snacks while he was a resident there.

They were knowledgeable and responsive, and spent ample time with us to help us understand the facility and what we could expect. They also helped us navigate the move. The facility itself is beautiful. The apartments are good-enough sized, with high ceilings that create a real sense of openness, and the dining and common living areas are comfortable and genuinely homey. While the building is very nice, it's really the staff who make this place feel like home. The chef will customize meals to meet individual needs - he's adding my mother's favorite (and unique) sandwich to the menu, simply because I requested it one day. That is service. Everyone on the care team is friendly, patient, professional and caring, and they consistently go out of their way to support the residents. I've had the opportunity to get to know the Memory Care team especially well over the past month, and I honestly can't say enough good things about them. They are exceptional. One of them is from a disgruntled interviewee, and the other is someone who offers zero information about why they disliked the place after a tour. I assure everyone reading this that I'm a REAL person who has a REAL relative living at Sunrise of Cupertino! It is a huge relief to know my mom, who is 95 and has dementia, is physically safe and so well cared for by so many wonderful people at Sunrise of Cupertino. Prior to this, she was in an independent facility and had completely outgrown the level of care they could provide to her. I chose Sunrise because the facility is sparkling clean, warm, welcoming, and the memory care areas look identical to assisted living. They are not "institutional" at all, a terrible thing I remember about my grandmother's care facility back in the mid 1980s. My mom has her own private apartment that is very spacious, modern, and full of natural light. She seems to like the food, and they've been particularly careful to ensure she isn't given any dairy (mom is lactose intolerant). She is constantly out of her room and kept busy with daily activities. Best of all, the medical staff communicative and responsive. Yes, it's expensive, and while I am thankful my mom has the money, I don't think it's any more or less expensive than any other private care facility in the area. Plus, the entire general neighborhood around the facility is super nice, easy to navigate, with plenty of street and garage parking.

In every circumstance, I have been so appreciative of the care my parents received at Westgate. Because of the care they showed to my father before his passing, I felt completely at ease entrusting my mom's care to them when the time came. The director, Aidah, knows every detail of what goes into each resident's care, and somehow also manages to remember little details about their loved ones too! She retained many of the same people even through Covid, so in some cases the same people who cared for my dad then are caring for my mom now! This speaks to the atmosphere and oversight at the facility. My mom had more complex needs than my dad, and without Angie I could never have put together all the pieces together to ensure those needs could be met. Lead nurse Jessica and her team let me know of every change to mom's health. And Clara in Activities is one of my mom's favorite people, never failing to make her smile. I could go on listing the various staff, but I say all this to say, that Westgate helps you to navigate the care your loved ones need in the least stressful way possible. Deciding to place a loved one in a care facility is never easy, but I'm so glad to partner with Westgate in doing so.

It was incredibly difficult to tell my dad that I could no longer manage his growing caregiving needs, but Merife and Michelle made the transition easier by assisting me when I shared the news at his home, where he had lived for 60 years. Our first lunch at Villa Fontana was nothing short of serendipitous--my dad was reunited with a former co-worker he hadn't seen in decades! The meal was so delicious that he kept saying "oishi" (Japanese for "delicious"). It truly felt like a home-cooked meal, starting with a cream of potato soup, followed by a bountiful salad with hardboiled eggs, olives, and more. The main course featured chicken parmesan, spaghetti, perfectly prepared vegetables, and a berry pie à la mode for dessert. My dad's room is bright and cheerful, overlooking a gorgeous courtyard. It was recently remodeled with new carpet and granite countertops, making it feel fresh and inviting. To help ease his transition, Merife arranged 24/7 caregiving services from Harmony for the first three days--an unexpected but deeply appreciated gesture. Each caregiver was kind, attentive, and communicative with me, which made all the difference. Just 3 days after moving in, my dad had a small accident during the night, falling on the bathroom floor. Thankfully, he wasn't harmed, and the staff immediately provided me with pictures to reassure me that he was okay. Their attentiveness and quick response gave me so much peace of mind. Perhaps the biggest change has been in my dad's daily routine. Before moving in, he spent his days watching TV from morning until night. Now, he participates in group morning exercises, and when I asked what he liked the most about Villa Fontana, he replied, Bingo! He also loves that he can enjoy ice cream every day--a small but meaningful joy. The entire staff at Villa Fontana has been incredibly friendly and kind. In addition to Merife and Michelle, I want to give a special shoutout to Jefferson, who always greets me at the front desk with a smile, as well as Allyssa, Maryann (the activity director), Maryann (the med tech), Manny, Marycris, and Roselily. I know I'm still learning everyone's names, so my apologies if I've left anyone out! Villa Fontana has truly exceeded my expectations, and I'm so grateful my dad is in such a caring and supportive environment.
