While sitting out on the back porch of Oak St. Drafthouse, I was chatting with my friends about the change that has been happening in Denton. We were marveling at all the amazing establishments that have been popping up around the square, and there is no better example than Oak St. The beer selection is astounding and the bartenders really have a solid understanding of each of the 40+ beers on tap. It's hard not to wish that I was still a college students basking in the glory of the up and coming bar scene here in Denton! Oak St. really shines on the beautiful Denton days when you can really enjoy sitting in the back area, staring at the variety of dogs that patrons regularly bring in and enjoying brews that you'd have a hard time finding anywhere else. I am currently obsessed with a milk stout nitro (#26 I believe) that pours beautifully and goes down even smoother. It's hard at times not to feel overwhelmed by the enormity of draft and bottled beers, but keep heart in knowing that it's hard to go wrong in your choice. The best way to enjoy a visit to Oak St. is to be adventurous and not stick with the same old beer you're used to. read more

So I went here with my friend Emily for the first time on Thursday night 7-12-18 ; I have never been to this establishment before and when we walked in I ordered 3 shots of fireball, and my friend ordered a mixed drink. The bartender didn't ask for my friends ID but asked for mine ( I'm 24 she is 22) I give it to him. He then proceeds to ask where is our third friend ? And we said it's just us. He then says you ordered three shots. And I said yeah they are for me. And he said no you can have one. Confused, I said why? And with the most CONDESCENDING voice said "I MAKE THE DRINKS I MAKE THE RULES". He swiped my card and said again with a condescending voice , have a good night. So I take my shot in front of him put my glass back on the counter and walked to the back patio. My friend finished her mixed drink and when we left, I went back to the bartender and politely asked for my receipt. He looked at me like I was dumb and asked for my name. I gave it to him and he asked if I wanted to close my tab. To which I responded you never asked me if I wanted to even open a tab. I wanted to pay for the ONE shot. He swiped my card and that was it. He ignored me , so I said Please close my tab , and give me my receipt. There were people behind me , so I signed my receipt and wrote on the bottom that he was rude and has LOST my business. VERY DISAPPOINTED and will be sure to let people know the customer service was terrible. read more

When I need an escape from 21st birthday bar crawls on Fry Street, I like to creep over to Oak St. Drafthouse to enjoy a beer on a patio that radiates positive vibes. Oak St. captures the culture of Denton, the way it once was, and introduces today's finest mircobrews in an old, cozy house just off the square. Whether it's your first time there, or you're a regular, the staff has made it easy to order your drink. Just look up at the board, and shout a number at the bartender. No, don't do that, but it is as simple as choosing a number and enjoying a refreshing drink. I'd say the hardest part is deciding what you wanna sip on. Literally everything they serve is something you've probably had one blurry night before, you've heard good things about or just sounds down right interesting. If it's not too crowded I'll ask them what they suggest, because I'm looking for something to challenge my taste buds, and the staff has always responded well. Where to sit you ask?! I prefer the patio, no matter the weather. Plenty of seating and just the right amount of light for a mellow atmosphere. The patio is dog friendly, so feel free to bring your pup and let everyone stare at it in awe of it's cuteness until another dog shows up on the scene. There are a few rooms on the inside with some cool old-fashioned furniture, perfect for a small party to plan a drunken revolution, or whatever. I think the only thing that turns off about coming here is the staff. Last time I came it was around 6:30, and from the doorman to the bartenders, I've felt a little unwelcome. Like I wasn't cool enough to be drinking a mircobrew in their bar.I won't let it stop me from returning while I'm here in Denton though, could've just been a rough night for all of them... That aside, Oak St. is the place to be, and I shall keep giving them my business while I reside in Den10. read more

Awesome beer selection at this bungalow style house renovated into a drafthouse. I don't think they modified very much except the restrooms, and the patio out back. The backyard is a huge beer garden with tables and lots of seating. Good prices, and the well liquors they have are top shelf at some other places which is a huge plus if you hate crappy liquors. I just want to re-emphasize my love for OSDH&CP. The new iPhone app is awesome, and I've been to some great events recently - namely the Armadillo Ale launches. I love the new (or not-so-new at this point) string lights, they're muuuuch better than the interrogation light that was there before. It makes everything look so much friendlier, and don't we all look just a little bit better in soft light? Try the cucumber margarita, get a grape soda, and finish with a beer or 8. One of the best places in Denton. If you don't like beer, there is a full bar. There is something for everyone here. The environment is laid back. The guys go out of their way to make it comfy too. They have bug spray, sunscreen and dog bowls out and ready for use. In the winter, they bring out heating lamps. There is always something going on here and there are always specials. A trip to Denton would not be complete without a stop at the Oak St. Drafthouse. On this beautiful almost spring day (3/15/2013) the weather was perfect for sitting outside, drinking beer and people watching. The last time I was here it was night and it was cold. While I enjoyed that experience greatly, I must say sitting in the sun was more enjoyable. Nearly every table was filled and the place was bustling. The mix of patrons was eclectic to say the least. It's cool that this place appeals to all and is dog friendly too. On this visit I tried a couple of beers I have not had in a while. My first was a Delirium Tremens, which I recently read was the number one beer in the world. I did not like it as much as I remembered (I recall more sweetness and less tartness). My second beer was a Revolver Blood and Honey. Oddly I did not like it as much as I remembered either (I was not getting the honey and orange notes), making me wonder if my taste buds were off. Could it have been lunch at Hoochie's Oyster House (http://www.yelp.com/biz/hoochies-oyster-house-denton) or dessert at Beth Marie's Old Fashioned Ice Cream (http://www.yelp.com/biz/beth-maries-old-fashioned-ice-cream-denton-2)? I hope not. Actually, I don't think so, I just think I was remembering the first time I had these beers and now I just don't like them as much. Lucky for me there are plenty of other options on offer here (for next time). And maybe I'm just lucking into specials, but the prices here always seem to be very reasonable. On this visit I also did wander the inside (all two rooms, not counting the foyer and the bar), and I got say, "M'eh, I've seen better". Sure there are a couple of rooms, with a very eclectic mix of furniture, but nothing that made me want to sit down... Not even in the barber's chair (or is it dentist? I'm not really sure). I saw no access to upstairs, so maybe it's staff only. Since 90% of the people sit outside anyway, I guess it's no big deal. I'd like to see more, but Oh well. On the plus side if the skies open up it's nice to have a place to run to... But I'd like to see everyone outside fit inside... I don't think that's going to happen. Bottom line: OSD will always be on my "stop in" list for whenever I'm in Denton. PS. I don't recall seeing it my last visit, but there is a bar outiside on the patio. I don't think it's the same full selection as inside, but if the crowd inside gets too intense, the bar outside may be better (it never looked that busy on this full house pre-spring day). read more

I love this place. It is so Denton. If you like beer, don't leave Denton without coming here at least one time. It's great year round, but I like coming when the weather is nice so I can sit outside. (Although they do have heaters for chilly weather.) There are plenty of different styles of beer to choose from. They will help you pick one and let you sample. Good luck having just one. It's in a neat old house. I love the different rooms with the quirky furniture. I usually sit in the front room with the very large, very awesome lamp. You'll see it right away. Although I moved away from Denton I have a special place in my heart for OSDH&CP (if you don't know what that stands for, then you need to hang out there more often). Just last year I watched in excitement as the little white house on Oak Street, formerly a vintage clothing store, started building up it's little white fence and poured in gravel and landscaping. Now it has turned into a full-scale operation, run by the owners and staff that know the pulse of the city. When I interviewed the owner John for a piece in the Dentoneer, he had made special effort to discover as much history about the building itself by asking locals and doing research. On a slow day, find him wondering around and year the awesome stories. The details: there is an in and outdoor bar, which serves great beer, including local brews and "fancy" beers (I am no beer snob, but those I know are impressed by the menu) as well as cocktails. It is smoke-free inside, and the rooms are filled with funky furniture and art. Take a ride on the barber chair or lounge on one of the old vintage couches. The patio is ginormous, with plenty of tables, heatlamps in the winter, fans in the summer, and dog-friendly. If you ever are trying to find it, follow the roar of the crowd and live music (I'd also like to thank my lucky stars I did not rent the apartment right behind there a few months before they opened the doors). My personal favorite thing about this place? The bathroom plumbing. They put a lot of effort to make the toilets flush like a rocketship. The scene? All your friends. and their friend's friends. and their family. If you are a Denton local, you will always run into someone you know there or if not, strike up a conversation with someone. I have no doubt John and the other owners have great plans. They have made a huge success with the Oak Street, and even starting to bring in live music and possibly food carts. Best bar in little D! Of course, as soon as I move away from Denton they get a decent bar. During my college years we would always go to Fry Street and hit up a patio which wasn't bad until they built the monstrosity of an apartment building across the street. Now there's no point to going to the patio of Cool Beans or Lou's because you're just staring at a cement parking garage. Also, all the bars until Oak Street came around allowed smoking which I always despised. You would have to plan ahead to shower drunk (this was college remember) before getting into bed and making your sheets smell like a 1950s minimum security prison. (Paschall's bar on the square has a great atmosphere, top-notch drinks, and most Denton-ist view of all the bars but the smoky atmosphere makes me not want to go at all) Oak Street Drafthouse is smoke free, an amazing(ly large) patio, a great selection of beer, Texas wine from my favorite vineyard in Texas, Becker Vineyards (if you haven't been to Fredericksburg yet you need to go), is dog-friendly, and a great laid back atmosphere. Great place if you're looking for rude staff and watered down drinks. Me and my friend were originally going to eat at Komodo loco but the dining room was closed so we decided to check this place out instead as it was just across the street and looked nice. We were unsure if it was 21+ (I'm 20) but my friend noticed that there were children on the patio so we decided to give it a try. Once we walked in, we waited an extremely long time at the front for someone to come seat us at the front but it was completely empty. We walked to the back and none of the staff greeted us so we seated ourselves, when someone finally handed us a menu. He asked us for our IDs and I told him I was only 20 and that we assumed it was all ages because of the kids. He snapped at us and said "Yeah, cause they're here with their parents, so are you here with your parents?" I literally didn't know what to say, we just sat there and looked at him, neither of us knew it was 21+. He said I could stay "just this one time", but I honestly just wanted to leave right then and there. My friend (who is 23) said he might as well get a drink while we were there, but once he got it he told me he was sure they either made it virgin or watered it way down. I understand that it's apparently a 21+ establishment, but we had no idea and the attitude I received was honestly really upsetting. I turn 21 in a few months but I am not going back. read more

Ok, let me just start by saying I'm a little partial, as John is the most awesome bar manager/owner in the world. That being said, I drink quite often, so I know what to expect from a bar. This place definitely takes the cake. They have about 50 draft beers that rotate, as well as a fully stocked bar. While it isn't the cheapest place in town, they always have $Lonestar, and good daily specials. The atmosphere is the #1 draw for me. It's where all the old Lou's kids grew up and moved to for drinks. The old house is outfitted with Grandma's house; it's so comfy we always joke that someone is going to forget where they are some day an light up a joint by accident. The beer garden is awesome, with plenty of seating and it's own bar. The staff is pretty friendly, although they can get grumpy I some stupid bitch is all "ooh I don't know what I want, how about, ooooh, I don't know....". But I would be too. There was a time in my life when I hated going to bars. That time in my life was before Oak Street Draft House existed. I used to frequent Loophole back in the day, but it's been overrun by frat guys and loud karaoke renditions of 'Bohemian Rhapsody'. I'll pass. I love the entire OSDH staff. They are always welcoming and know me by name and that's not because I'm a lush. Not completely. The whole establishment sang me happy birthday when I celebrated my 24th there. Let me tell you, drunk KatyBelle was overwhelmed. The bar staff will recommend something fantastic if you mention a beer that you already like. I appreciate such variety in the beer wall, specifically with Texas weather. Sure, it's 40 degrees and I really want a 512 Pecan Porter, but I'm going to want a St Arnold's Lawnmower the next day when it's 75 out, and OSDH never lets me down. The best bar in Denton, hands down. While I typically get one of the many incredible beers offered on draft, during the winter they offer fantastic hot drinks. Do your life a favor: Try the Almond Kiss. I'm also really looking forward to the East Side Social Club that John will be opening up across the street within the next year or so. It's one of the oldest houses in Denton. I love how they have converted it. It's a Really good draft house with an excellent selection of craft beers. They have 72 beers on tap! It's a pretty relaxed atmosphere and the place is pretty inexpensive. The bartenders are very welcoming and knowledgeable about the beers. You can get flights if you would like to try different beers. They also serve some really good mixed drinks. I had a really good bloody mary. My wife had their mimso but she said it was just ok. Dogs are welcome in the outside seating. You can go next door and pick up some Tacos and eat at Oak St and enjoy some beers. read more

Best patio in Denton! It's large with lots of tables and nice lighting. The inside is really cool too, a remodeled old house. The place itself is just really awesome and a great place to go hang out with friends. I always have a great time here. The staff is always friendly and helpful. Their prices are good. OSDH&CP is easily my favorite beer joint ever. I moved to SoCal a few months back and can't find anything quite like it. That being said if you enjoy quality beer and a laid back backyard vibe this is the place to go. The bartenders are very fun and knowledgeable. Strolling by on a warm August night, we saw the Oak St. Drafthouse and couldn't resist. It's set in a big old Victorian house with the beer bar in the foyer next to the front door. All the rooms have furniture for lounging, old-timey pictures on the walls, and the highlight is the huge yard in the back yard filled with chairs, tables, benches and ping pong. They have huge fans in the yard that lower the saturation of smoke, and despite the crowd, the overall noise level remained low, which is a win in my book. They have an impressive microbrew selection- mostly on tap, and the guys behind the counter pretty much live for all things beer. I was looking for a cask ale (basically a beer without carbonation) and they immediately pointed me towards Gravel Road, made by Fort Worth's Rahr and Sons Brewerey. What a perfect choice... unfiltered, low carbonation and almost more of a juice than a beer, but not sweet at all- amazing. I'm not a bar guy, but this place works for me. read more

Checked this place out a couple of Saturday's ago. It's one of Denton's oldest homes that was turned into a bar. Good selection of local craft beers on draft and liquor as well. There are 2 rooms to sit in with couches and chairs and mostly decorated with items from the 1940s-1960s. Makes for a cool atmosphere to hang out in and enjoy a nice beverage. One of the rooms has a 2 player table you can sit at with arcade games. Kind of old so the joy stick didn't work too well on the pac man game. They also have a big patio with chairs, tables and pic nic tables to sit at along with big industrial fans. Will definitely be back when in Denton again! read more

I love the atmosphere of this place and the beer selection is wonderful! I come here frequently for a 5:01 meeting or a late-night hang out with friends. The backyard space is my favorite! Tons of picnic tables and an outdoor bar, and heaters for when it's cold! Love coming here. My one criticism would be that the bartenders get really annoyed when you don't order using the numbers.
