I am really sorry to say this, but the minute I walked into the bakery, the smell was not appealing. It did not smell of fresh bakery items. It had a smell of mold and old cleaning supplies. I looked at the bakery items and none of them seem to be appealing maybe it's because I couldn't get over the horrible smell of the facility. This place has completely fallen apart when it comes to customer service. Start hiring people who actually know how to help customers, because whatever you have going on now is unacceptable. What an absolute waste of my time. There were three employees--two glued to the phone and one barely helping the few people in the store. Clearly, these employees have zero capability or training, because they can't even manage more than one customer at a time. Honestly, fire this staff and hire people who are actually capable of multitasking and doing their jobs. If not, reviews like this will keep coming. Shame on you. I didn't know what to get, but the lady working at the front gave me loads of recommendations on what's good and what's popular. I got the chocolate chip cheesecake and a European cheese twist baked good. Both were so so good, I would highly recommend them. Inflation is real! But makes sense, as the bakery needs to cover the increase in costs of their raw materials. A 6" cake here a year ago was $30. Now it's $45. The weekly special cookies 'n cream cake we picked up today for my dad's birthday was very fresh. The chocolate cake was extremely moist (one of the freshest cakes I've tried from here), and the Oreo cream filling was on point! The cake was adorned with 2 Oreo cookies as well. However, unfortunately, when having a piece 2 days later, I tasted something chewy in my mouth. Spit it out, and it was a small, clear, rubber looking piece. I spoke to management, returned the cake and material, and the complaint was filed and investigated within 2 days, with full resolution and refund issued for the glove that was in the cake. I appreciated the manager's attentive and thorough communication throughout the process. Service upon the original walk in visit left something to be desired too. I asked the young girl behind the counter what flavor one of the cakes was, and she mumbled something like I don't know. I asked if there was fruit inside it, and she answered by pointing to another case and saying those cakes had fruit. Finally, after asking if she could find out what flavor it was, she went to talk to a more experienced staffer who came over, while she herself just disappeared to help someone else. ‍ Oak Mill was a solid option for a reliable selection or special occasion cakes, and a cake monster I am. Note to self (if I ever return...) and other cake monsters: go to flavors are Ambrosia (hazelnut and chocolate cake with white chocolate mousse and raspberry filling), Dobosh (vanilla and chocolate with marzipan), and mango (vanilla and chocolate cakes with mango filling), which I enjoyed more than expected. Pear Charlotte also gets a nod, with the unique ladyfinger perimeter, pear element, and rum. Skip the straciatella. I ordered another cake for a birthday party here, and it wasn't my favorite. It was a vanilla cake with peach mousse and a passion fruit mousse layer inside. I've been a loyal customer of Oak Mill Bakery for over 20 years. The pear cake is my absolute favorite because it's light, not overly sweet, and always a hit with my friends and family. I used to enjoy their chocolate cream, chocolate-covered rogaliki, which had a delightful crunchy base made of egg whites and nuts. Unfortunately, they changed the recipe, and they're no longer as good, so I stopped buying them. While the pear cake used to be $27, it now costs close to $70 with tax. Because of this price increase, I don't visit as often anymore, which is better for both my wallet and my waistline. Over the last few years I noticed a decline in quality and style of products sold by Oak Mill Bakery. I support this business for sentimental reasons but unfortunately my patronage will be ending. I purchased a bday cake today and it was a total disappointment. It tasted old, cheaply made and gone are the Polish European flavors once present in all Oak Mill sweets. This Bakery made my wedding cake and Sweet Table that is still talked about to this day by my family. For my dad's birthday, I decided to stop by Oak Mill Bakery and get him a cake from here. It was my first time at Oak Mill but I remember my cousin wedding had a sweets table that was from Oak Mill Bakery and it was delicious. I was surprised by their vast selection of cakes. There were so many to choose from! I was worried because some bakeries offer a small selection to buy the day of but not Oak Mill! I ended up getting a Strawberry & Peach chocolate cake with custard and whip cream for my dad. It was delicious and my family loved it. I also got a slice of their marzipan roll and some cannolis to try. Unfortunately both were not to my liking. The marzipan was too gritty for me and the shell for the cannoli was stale. Nonetheless we went back to get a cake for my birthday and I picked out the Temptation cake. It was soooooooooooo good. Honestly it was one of the best tasting cakes I've ever had. So if I need to be honest, I get this is a north west burbs institution. However this is by far the absolute worst bakery in the area. The staff is the worst, rude, cold, unapproachable and should not be the front of house face to meet clients. The items they sell are tasteless, zero flavor and assembled poorly. It was noted a lot of the goods were frozen and foul tasting. One of the pasties actually smells of mildew. It was also noted the kitchen prep area is very dirty very unkept. Did you know that there are multiple Oak Mill Bakeries? I thought it was just the one location on Oakton and Milwaukee (Niles) until I called the Harwood Heights location and realized that there are multiple locations bearing the same name... Oak Mill Bakery (the original) is a place I've always wanted to visit and I'm glad I did when I went by there a few weeks for paczki's. Paczki's are Polish doughnuts that are filled with jelly and they come in a lot of yummy flavors. I've always wanted to try them and they had an assortment for "Paczki Day" (February 13th) which I went to sample. By the time I ended up at Oak Mill they only had a few flavors left but I'm glad I got to try the raspberry and blueberry flavors. They had sea salt caramel earlier in the day (yumm) but of course it was all sold out. They also had apricot and prune around the time I got there (near closing). I picked up a few other yummy desserts (peanut butter pop, red velvet cupcake, and some strawberry shortcake) and left with my yummy goodies. Pros: -prices are fair (all my items were around 14.00) -selection was decent (make more caramel paczkis and less prune) -service was fantastic (the employee working there went back twice to get me items from their freezer and instructed me that I needed to thaw them). Cons: -weird parking- as in you have to be on the Milwaukee side to get in and do all these weird u-turns or drive through the neighborhood -be prepared to wait. I waited about 15 minutes in line. THE OTHER LEBOWSKI Searching for the perfect wedding cake can be a series of ups & downs, strikes and gutters...... With a venue, band, and guest list all but locked up for our 2020 ceremony, the next item on the agenda was to nail down a bakery. My fiancée and I came here for a cake tasting on 9/21/19, having made an appointment for 10am. This European bakery is located on Milwaukee Ave in Niles, just north of Oakton. It's in a strip mall on the west side of the street, and parking can be a bit difficult. Oak Mill has a wide assortment of cookies, breads and small tartlets inside glass display cases, some of which are just beautiful. Upon arriving on-time (a rarity for me, but necessary given the importance of the situation), we were asked to wait at a table. A few minutes turned into 10, which grew to 20 minutes.....then 30. Halfway through, we were asked to move to another table as some other wedding couple pulled rank on us. Okay, rude. The actual cake tasting was $25 for what amounts to a few forkfuls. We sampled a French custard, lemon curd, and raspberry preserves with a few different frostings. Bill helped us, but he was pulled away several times to help with other customers. There were a lot of interruptions on top of a late start. With our hearts set on a 'tres leches' (three milks cake), we requested a small sample and were told it wasn't possible. We could only place an order for an *entire* $30 cake, since not even a small tester slice was available. My gut was telling me to walk away; I would never buy a car before test driving it first. In a total leap-of-faith move, we ordered their interpretation of a 'tres leches' and picked it up a week later. I should've known something was screwy when they showed us a picture of it covered in chocolate and we had to request it be left off......like it should be to begin with? As it turns out, they outsourced this project to another bakery who thought it'd be perfectly fine to soak the cake in Kahlúa. Not only is this not one of the "three milks", this is a coffee liquor. Not. Even. Close. The cake received 4 thumbs-down; 2 from both the prospective groom and bride-to-be. * TL;DR * White Russians make a great beverage; Eric S has been known to ask for another Caucasian. Those boozy flavors are great when served over ice in an Old Fashioned glass, but any recipe calling for you to soak a whole cake in it is a very unwelcome deviation. I should've listened to my instincts and not ordered a Mexican special occasion cake from a Polish bakery. As a traditional tres leches, it was a disaster and now we're stuck with the rest of it. It felt like opening a briefcase you think is filled with ransom money, and instead getting Walter Sobchak's dirty undies. That's bad enough, but they made us sit around for THIRTY minutes. Why even bother making an appointment with us? We've got lots of stuff going on -- especially on a Saturday in September -- having us sit for half an hour is really inconsiderate and tells us that A) our time isn't important B) our business doesn't matter to them. Needless to say, we're dropping Oak Mill like a 16lb bowling ball and finding some place else to handle our wedding affairs. His Dudeness is not pleased. I love the cakes they made for my nephew!! I ordered a week in advance and they printed the pictures I sent them on top of the cake. It was a very easy process. They also added details on the side which made both cakes look better. The only reason why it's not 5-star is because it has more icing than bread. Love Oak Mill, I've been going here for years. They've always come through with luscious cakes when I special ordered them. The cake is light and airy, the whipped cream frosting just right and the decorations are superb. They have done some amazing decorations on sheet cakes for me that have been a big hit. Last week I went with my friend who is shopping around for a wedding cake, the lady behind the counter was not very welcoming the manager wasnt there so she had me write my info for the manager to call me for appointment. She did not even direct us to the corner section where they have wedding cake displays, photo compilations etc we just helped out selves check out stuff. Fast forward today, so my friend went there for the appointment (I was not able to join her). My friend's appointment was 3pm but she got there at 2:30 and told the person behind the counter she has an appointment with Basia the wedding cake coordinator. My friend waited patiently. No Basia come out. So my friend left very disappointed. I learned about it and called the place right away and spoke to Basia. She claimed she was there the whole time and had not gotten a message that my friend was there. The person behind the counter may have not told Basia her 3pm is already there. And Basia knew she has 3 pm appointment and did not bother to check if the person arrived. What kind of customer service is that?!?! Such a disappointment! You just lost a customer. We came here to pick up a birthday cake for our grand-daughter and we were very happy with our choice of a 6" strawberry whipped cream/custard cake. It was $25.67 all in including a $2 charge for a written cake message but at least the birthday placard is pretty large and is edible white chocolate. $26 may seem a bit pricey for a 6" cake but in comparing prices for premium quality products, they're in line with the top tier competition and this product was tip-top fresh and tasty and you could tell right away with the strawberries and almonds for example. Another reason for my high rating is they also have a huge selection of off-the-shelf quality choices and I'm sure they can customize just about anything you might like. I've been going to Oak Mill Bakery for many years and I knew that is where I wanted to get my wedding cake from. Their pastries and cakes are just sooo good. Of course, I had a wedding cake in mind of course and It was the semi-naked cake. When we met with Basia, she convinced us to get the chocolate flavor since It will look better with the semi-naked look I was going for. We chose the raspberry mousse for the filler and let me tell you, It was sooo good. I knew I wouldn't be disappointed with the way our cake would taste. Now, where I was extremely disappointed was with the fact that my cake looked nothing like what I wanted. I have shown Basia the look that I was going for and she said that It was no problem to do. It didn't seem difficult in my eyes, no crazy designs, just semi-naked look. She did tell me that there is an extra cost to the semi-naked look, which initially shocked me. She told me that It was because It requires more work to get that look. I've attached photos for comparison with what I showed her via email and on my phone on multiple occasions. My florist put the flowers on my cake and thank God that she did because my cake would have just looked like a white cake...that's It, just a white cake, no semi-nakedness to It except for three SMALL streaks. You can even see the stands that each tier is propped on which cheapens the look of the cake even more. The first time that I saw my cake was when I walked up to it for my cake cutting ceremony. Imagine my disappointment. Of course, I hid my disappointment, but boy was I fuming. Not only because of the way that it turned out but also, I found out that my coordinator was having trouble getting ahold of Oak Mill Bakery. My coordinator was ready to go to a store to pick up a random cake in place because she didn't think it would show up since no one was getting back to her. Overall, I thank God that at least it tasted good and that the flowers were there because It really would have looked sort of sad. One of the better bakeries in the area. They have a nice selection of breads and pastries. We tried the eclair, Napoleon, doughnut, petit fours, opera cake, and a hedgehog cake. The service we received was excellent and all of my questions were answered well. The eclair has a nice chocolate topping that was not too thick, the pastry creme was just fine, I wish it had more natural vanilla flavor. The Napoleon was quite good. It had a nice puff pastry, but It left a tiny bit of a film in my mouth (I'm skeptical all butter was used). The coffee petit four was moist and had a good layering of buttercream but the chocolate petit four was dry and didn't taste very chocolaty. The doughnut was cooked well and stuffed with a lot of creme but the dough was slightly dry (maybe they are better in the morning, we came late in the day). The opera cake was fine. Nothing stood out that made this bakery seem special. Overall, I thought that everything tasted pretty good and from testing out many bakeries in the area, this was one that I would return for a visit or recommend. read more

My compliments to Oak Mill on having the good sense to employ Basia as a wedding consultant! She was very friendly and PATIENT with my tasting group of four (although mostly with me as I was quite talkative - I didn't know that the average tasting time was 45 minutes to one hour - we were there for about two hours). In my favor it is much more time consuming with four people vs. two (the two parties that arrived after us both had two - likely the folks getting married. Our bride and groom live in San Fran and we were family tasting proxies. Basia asked about the theme/style/motif of the wedding and other questions as she was trying to narrow down the options. She brought us out coffee and a tray of cakes. They looked lovely and we narrowed our group choice to strawberry mousse filing with chocolate and vanilla cakes. Sort of boring in light of the choices - but it should be delicious. Basia was also good with noting what items will not work well with other items and she was clear in advising when an item was going to cost "more per person." Our bride and groom were not getting the cake as a "part of a wedding package" but buying the cake "on their own." I didn't think that the cost of the cake and delivery was unreasonable - about $900. Weddings have to be Uber challenging as brides are hyper sensitive about everything being "just right." So my kudos to Basia, the well-respected Oak Mill bakery and to the hope that our wedding cake is "just right." :) read more
