Papagalino is an excellent bakery in Niles. I saw they have a dine in/restaurant and bar area as well with a patio, but I only tried their bakery section for take out so far. The bakery is excellent. I tried their Mocha Cappuccino cake - delicious and big portion! Maybe one of the best kinds of these cakes I've tried before. You walk into a little taste of Greece. The staff is friendly, the fireplace in the middle of the restaurant is very cool and there's a vibrancy to the whole look and feel of the place. They have a lot of Greek specialties, but for me, the spinach pie is great and baked fresh daily. The amount of cheese to spinach ratio is perfect and the thin crispy layers on top add for a nice finishing taste. We finished with coffee and dessert -- I had a latte and we shared a nougatina -- Greek almond cream cake. Service was relaxed and friendly -- my friend knew the staff and a lot of the patrons. The friend who invited me to come here was their former employee, and told me all the best about this place. She was thrilled about the place, their food, atmosphere, service... literally everything. She also mentioned she is visiting them as a guest quite often. The place as a place has a nice atmosphere (when I say it- it means it reminds me on my home country). Service was fast and good. Food as food is nothing spectacular. One average greek gyro. It is definitely 3/5. The portions are big, that is what I can say, but nothing else. I haven't tried anything else besides that. My review is for the bakery and cafe. I have been to Papagalino a couple of times. Once was for a takeout of some pastries and more recently for dine in. In both of my visits, I had a good experience. On my recent visit, my party and I came here for desserts (only). The cafe was busy and the parking lot was near full. We were seated promptly. The restaurant was happening and lively. A lot of patrons were enjoying their food and drinks and seemed to be having a good time. Our server was friendly and helpful. She provided good service. We ordered five pastries and five drinks. For the drinks, we ordered two Machiattos, two Baileys coffee, and one Greek coffee. For pastries, we ordered the following pastries (see their menu for details): 1) Menelik Layer of Chocolate and Yellow Cake, Filled With Vanilla Custard & Chocolate Mousse With Roasted Almonds 2) La Orange Layers of Yelllow Cake Filled With Orange Custard Cream 3) Galaktoboureko A traditional Greek dessert featuring a custard in a crispy phyllo pastry shell. 4) Ek Mek Kataifi Strudel phyllo with Custard and Walnuts. 5) Cheesecake I ordered the Menelik. I also tried the other pastries (except for cheesecake). All the drinks and pastries were good in taste. We all liked what we had. My favorites were the La Orange and Ek Mek Kataifi. I liked their flavors and texture a lot. They have a good variety of desserts and drinks on their menu. They are reasonably priced in today's times. Before leaving the cafe, we swung by their bakery shop, and some of us purchased other sweet treats to go. We were helped by the manager of the shop and she was helpful. I saw more variety of pastries that drew my attention, which I hope to try on my next visit. I would recommend checking out this establishment, especially if you like dessert and drinks. This is the first time I ever visited this bakery so I didn't know what to expect. The woman that helped me was so lovely. I came at 8pm looking for breakfast items for my church breakfast group the following morning. I ended up buying a special Easter bread that was topped with almonds and had an "egg" in the center. My church gals loved that! The walnut cake is super moist and delicious. My daughter picked the chocolate mousse cake decorated like a lion. First stop on my trip to Chicago. The place was large and spacious and plenty of seating. We seated ourselves and waited for the waiter. Menu had a decent amount of options and I opted for the hot pikilia for 2. The platter definitely had a good assortment of options and is a great way to try multiple different meat options. We also grabbed some dessert to go, as we left. Overall i would the service was adequate, nothing exceptional but also not poor. The seating and area was spacious with plenty of outdoor lighting which was appreciated. The food, imo, was nothing that stood out. They made a custom cake for me last week and it was not only beautiful but delicious as well. I texted them a picture and they duplicated it perfectly on the cake. It was a sheet cake, chocolate and vanilla with white chocolate mousse between the layers. While picking up the cake I tried some of their other treats like fresh made Baklava with walnuts! My favorite. They had so many Greek and Italian pastries it was tough to choose. I bought some traditional almond cookies in powdered sugar. Excellent. Love this place. read more

Racist. I'm a black woman. I came in late one night needing coffee and a pastry. 2 men walked past me, not acknowledging me. I walk over to the bakery. Again, 2 men there who don't acknowledge me. I say hello and ask about coffee. On the other side. Ask about the bathroom, also on the other side. They go back to their conversation. I go to the other side. The man walks past me again, I'm clearly looking a little lost and guess the bathrooms are straight ahead. I use the restroom and stand back at the door because you have to wait to be seated. I'm waiting there looking at the menu. These men servers walk past me again. Then 2 other men customers come in, they're greeted and asked where they want to sit. I ask them, "so I've been standing here this whole time and you just ignored me?" The dude says yes and keeps walking with the men. Then the other server asks me how he can help. At this point that was done on purpose and I'm actually good. I didn't even try the food. Have a sign saying "No blacks" so we know not to come here, because you shouldn't treat people like that. read more

As a fellow Greek, this is a Greek family run business and quite delicious. It's a large space, with a nice atmosphere for some really good food. The chicken slouvlaki platter was just enough. Chicken was well cooked and flavored. Save some room for Loukoumades, Greek deep fried honey balls, that are just like when I'm in Greece. Was craving a chocolate cake and I looked up this place! The desserts looked pretty good, so I was expecting a good chocolate cake. This cake was very underwhelming. I don't think the strawberries and chocolate went well together. Also, the cake was dry and somewhat crumbly. The chocolate mouse might've been over whipped and definitely could've had a stronger chocolate flavor too. Basically, this cake tasted like 4 completely separate ingredients just topped on each other. In one bite, I could taste the separation of the strawberries, chocolate cake, chocolate mousse, and the fondant/frosting. I drive almost an hour each way to get Greek baked goods from what I consider one last quality freak bakeries in Chicagoland (I used to go into Greek town to the bakery on Halsted until they were forced out). Everything was fresh and made with quality and craftsmanship. The place is not inexpensive but not but not crazy expensive and you actually get the quality you pay for. So few Greek bakeries left and this one is absolutely worth a try. read more

This place has been one of my go to spot for years because of their late open hours. They serve a wide range of foods from salads, sandwiches, teas, to desserts. It's a great place to meet up with friends when everything else is closed for a quick bite. The atmosphere inside is very unique and almost gives a tropical vibe. I would say the quality of food isn't 5/5 though. It's just average tasting, but I would say it's a great place to go to catch up with friends after dinner time. Such a cute place! Came here yesterday, and the atmosphere is very cozy. My friend and I came here for dinner, and we didnt try any dessert seeing as it is a bakery, so I can't provide any info on their pastries. I felt like I was in Europe when I walked in. The decor is beautiful, and they had the coziest chairs. There is also an outdoor patio. The food was very good, as well. I ordered saganaki which was very good, but I wish they set it in fire in front of the customer like they do in most places. I also ordered a chicken souvlaki pita wrap which was pretty good, and I love how much tzatziki sauce they put on the wrap and then they put an extra cup on the side. The fries here are so crispy and amazing, and to me, that means a lot because I normally hate fries from places and I wont even touch them. My friend got a gyro, and although I didn't try it, she loved it. Though she said she wished it had more meat inside the pita. I went to Papagalino Bakery after searching on Yelp for specific cake criteria. I wanted to find a bakery with a good selection of cakes since I didn't know exactly what I wanted. I wanted to find a bakery which prepared cake in a non-American style since I was looking for something less sweet, more moist, and had more fresh fruits or nuts (I was thinking Asian bakery to meet this criteria). I was also looking for a good price, as many premium bakeries can easily run over 40, 50, or 60 dollars for small to medium sized cakes. Fortunately, Papagalino met all this criteria. I was originally skeptical as it was difficult to park, the shop wasn't that well lit, there were only a few cashiers, the display cases were foggy, prices seemed a bit low, and labels were hand written. Fortunately, I was able to see past this mediocre first impression to enjoy some delicious cakes. I tried 4 types of cakes on my visit and all were good in their own way. 3 milk cake: Very rich and very moist with a nice cream top. The thin layer of fudge adds a nice contrast to the dominant milk flavors. This is comparable in richness to the Tres Leches cake you can find at Sam's Club and is sure to put a smile on your face. Atomic cake: The light layer of custard matches well with a layer of yellow cake and a layer of chocolate which don't detract from the flavor of the strawberries. Mango mousse cake: Nice mango flavor, although not as refined as the mango cakes I've had in Asia - but very good for Chicagoland. But this costs a lot less and is provided in a generous portion. The mousse is very fragrant and matches well with the other components, particularly the coconut shavings. Strawberry torte: It's a tossup between this and the three milk cake for my favorite. This was a total surprise as I expected it to taste similar to the numerous strawberry shortcakes I've tried. To my surprise, they added a good amount of milk inside to make the cake extra moist and creamy. Mix this with delicious cream on the outside and tons of fresh strawberries and it creates a wonderful combination on your palate. The sliced almonds on the outside just add additional flavor to contrast and a bit of extra texture. Overall, good prices with lots of choices for cakes and baked goods. Full size cakes are also very reasonably priced at about 28 for fresh fruit, 30 for regular size, and 43 for large at the time of this writing. The only thing really keeping this from 5 stars for me is how the bakery section seems old and uninviting compared to the nicely decorated dining room. One seems upscale and comfortable while the other feels like my basement. If the bakery could be remodeled to match the splendor of the dining room, Papagalino Bakery definitely deserves 5 stars. read more
