I was so excited when I saw this guy was open for walk in business again. My family used to order from here fairly often, and he was catering only for a while, so yay! Honestly, I usually come for the sides, but I am also a fan of the wings. Wings are huge, and I'm good with 1 or 2 only. He makes the best coleslaw, no kidding. It's not overly mayo drenched, but not vinegar based either. I don't know just get some. I also got the smoked cabbage, and that was wonderful as well. Just for fun, I tried the smoked chicken salad. This is very smokey, but, again, I loved it. I do like smokey flavor. The menu is pretty focused - barbeque, wings, sides, some fun specials. Small dining areas, both indoor and outdoor. A kitchy little place in Sunbury with fantastic bbq!!!! You can find it by smell. I had a pulled chicken taco, had cheese and coleslaw. Chicken was great!! I've travelled all over the USA and had barbecue in Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Tennessee, North Carolina, Virginia and Now, OHIO. Found this little gem after a weekend getaway to Columbus. So I drove all the way out here on my west to find awesome barbeque around central Ohio. When I first arrived, the first thing I noticed were the dirty tables. I was trying to find one to sit at and it was like trying to find gold in California. I then. Noticed all the news personalities that had been here on the wall. I ordered the brisket with fries and one wing. I asked for the barky brisket but got a lot of fat. So that was a minus. My mouth was all set for some awesome cue once I got past that. Well I was not too impressed by the brisket. It wasn't really tender and it tasted kind of off. Not sure if they seasoned it enough. The fries were good but they put a lot of salt in them. The wings though. I will say I would drive back for the wings. They tasted AMAZING! If crack were chicken wings, these would be the wings to have everyone in a 12 step recovery program. read more

My wife and I stopped here for lunch after fishing. The place threw us off just because it wasn't what we were expecting. It was pretty small. But we stopped and went inside. I got the Oak Hill Sampler that came with 4 sides (pickled peppers, greens, cole slaw, and like a cabbage slaw) and my wife got the chicken legs with fries(literally small turkey legs and fries were crispy perfect). The service here is phenomenal. The owner greets everyone like he's known them for years, people walked up to him with the same familiarity. From reading the Yelp reviews I knew to walk inside to order. But I can see how that might have confused some folks (not worth docking points though. Come on.) I got the pulled pork sandwich with a side of smoked cabbage. The sandwich was piled high with some of the juiciest pulled pork I've ever tasted. So juicy that I didn't even need to put a drop of sauce on it. The smoked cabbage was tangy and crunchy and perfect. I was hesitant to skip out of something cheese covered or deep fried, now I'll be hard pressed to ever stray from it. More than enough food and tough to beat at $8. It's not my favorite BBQ spot and seems something has changed over the past year or so and not for the better. Before I liked the ribs, brisket, and many other dishes...now when I've gotten these they are overcooked, dry, tough, etc... I enjoy the skin from the crispy chicken, but the meat itself is very bland so instead I'll get the wings or legs. They're more smoked and the meat has lots of flavor. I also enjoy the pulled pork and this is my usual as a 1/2 lb. sandwich with the fries. My son loves the cheesy spaghetti also and he gets the kids meal (pulled pork also) which is a great value @ $5. read more

Everything is made in house with love by the proprietor Ron "Fat Man". All of the meat is seasoned to perfection, so the sauce is only needed as a compliment. The gold sauce is spectacular! All of the desired BBQ staples are available. The lineup includes: Beef brisket, pulled chicken, pulled pork, ribs, rib tips, and the most delicious jumbo chicken wings I've ever tasted. All of the sandwiches are a half pound of meat. The fat man really lets his passion show in his side dishes. From spaghetti mac to his smoked greens all of the sides are inventive and delicious. Try the dirty beans because they will knock your socks off. I don't even like pinto beans, but these are excellent. Fat Man also does daily specials such as Taco Tuesdays, Chicken and Noodles on Wednesdays, and Fried Chicken Fridays. He also has orgasmic homemade desserts including Granny Smith apple crisp, Nilla wafer banana pudding, and cherry cheesecake. Stopped in here on the way to my parents. Amazing brisket. If you've seen my posts you know I love fatty brisket and this had the perfect amount of fat and it was buttery and melty. The perfect amount of seasoning as well. It was phenomenal. I also ordered the chicken legs which were extremely cheap 1.50 a leg and they had a nice Caribbean jerk seasoning to them and appeared fried because the skin has a nice crunch to them. This used to be an ice cream stand, and you can see that in the shape- though not in the paint job. I remember it back then, and was wondering how they would change the place. It works perfectly as a BBQ joint, and this is the good stuff, so atmosphere is secondary anyway. There are a few tables inside, and two outside. No silverware, just sporks, my only minor complaint. The owner is super friendly, and explains the menu. He asked what I like- and I saw him treat everyone almost like family, welcoming and explaining if they were new, welcoming and remembering their faves if they were regulars. They have the usual suspects: brisket, pork, chicken, etc. It's all done well. The meat has flavor deep down, and doesn't need sauce, though they have several and they're all good. I went with a sampler, the Fat Man, that has brisket, pulled pork, and pulled chicken. I saw rib tips on the menu, so I added some of those, but there is plenty of food in the Fat Man. Plus, it comes with six small sides, basically everything except the fries. My favorites of those were the smoked cabbage and the cheesy spaghetti, their take on mac and cheese. They were all good, though: pickled veggies, cole slaw, great greens, and dirty beans. Oh, the meats? They were fantastic. The rib tips were meaty, smoky inside, with a nice dry rub. The brisket was full of flavor and incredibly juicy. I am usually not a BBQ chicken fan, but this was moist and flavorful. None needed sauce, but I had to try them, of course. Their house "gold" is an excellent take on our standard red sauces. The Carolina was thin, vinegary, and spicy, and really did remind me of what I've had down there. My favorite was the mustard, a rich take on the style with a nice balance of sweet and tangy flavors (I think he said he uses molasses, and I could tell though it does not stand out or overwhelm the other flavors.) The sweet tea was just right. The cornbread was dense, slightly sweet, and amazing. I overordered in order to try so much, and left with a full box. Also with a piece of chess pie, one of the best versions of that I have ever had or made. Good crust, sweet custardy filling. Man. I was hoping for good BBQ, and I got great BBQ. Prices are reasonable for what you get, and there are specials like $15 slabs (Sundays.) It is out of my way, but I will be back. It's worth a detour. read more

I have been wanting to try this place for some time now, today was the day. It looks as if it used to be an ice cream stand, where you place your order through the half windows. Not much in the cozy dining area department but you can sit at picnic tables outside if you wish. But you don't come here for the dining tables, you come for the smoked meat. They have the usual items on the menu for a bbq restaurant with some added sides and some tasty sounding desserts. Since I couldn't decide what to get, I went with the Sample Platter which consisted of beef brisket, pulled pork, pulled chicken, dirty beans, greens, cole slaw, smoked cabbage, marinated veggies, spaghetti & cheese and corn bread. You get much more than enough food and especially at $15, you get your money's worth. There is easily enough food for at least 2 meals. I chose not to try any of the sauces since they are used too often to hide the flavor of the meats. This is absolutely some of the best food I've had in a long long time. If I would have to choose which side was my favorite, I couldn't. They were all just as tasty as the last. The beef brisket melts in your mouth with the perfect amount of smokiness coming through. The pulled pork was was some of the best I've ever had anywhere. I'm usually not a big fan of pulled chicken, but I am now and would definitely get it again. Hands down the BEST smoked chicken I have had in my life! The rub they use (which I offered to buy but was refused as it's their special recipe) is to die for. The skin of the chicken pieces is crisp and seals in all the flavor. The brisket is flavorful, and so tender its like butter. I will offer that I am generally not a fan of greens, but they way they are prepared here make them the 2nd best side option next to the cheesy spaghetti....which is their take on mac-n-cheese but using spaghetti noodles. I have travelled my whole professional life, and I have eaten BBQ in all of the southern states. Memorable stops have been the Rendevous in Memphis, some mustard based BBQ's in South Carolina, and many, small country BBQ's. You could usually smell them 1/2 mile away. Texas has been my most travelled state, and I am partial to a good beef brisket, although a good pulled pork is a close second. Rudy's in San Antonio is one I usually hit every trip. They are predictably good. The problem most restaurants have with their brisket is they dry it out and try to drown it in sauce to try to moisten it back up. This brisket was moist, tender and perfectly cooked. They also realized there needs to be a fair amount of fat to also keep it moist. I've eatena lot of bbq. And while I might consider Cincinnati the south, the 300-pound frame wasn't built on bad bbq. Didn't even know the place was there. Already had lunch, but had to check this place out. Planned on just looking at the menu and seeing if it passed the "sniff" test. Well the owner - or resident fat man - changed that. His love for his food is infectious and the way he describes each side makes you wonder if they are his children. I rummaged through the seat cushions and got $8 for a pork sandwich with a side of cheesy spaghetti. Found the staff attentive and quick to answer questions. The sandwich was about 1/2-pound of pork and as the "fat man" said "it'll stand up on its own." The pork is served naked and the balance of the rub and spices gave it a strong flavor that didn't overwhelm the natural flavor of the pork. The special mustard sauce really made for a great meal. The cheesy spaghetti was good a heavy sauce with strong garlic flavor. However the smoked cabbage is on my list for next visit ... Which will be very soon. read more

So this place is very good. Was up in the area after round of golf and looked for something local and found Oak Hill BBQ and figured I give it a try. Owner is very engaging and will go through the menu with ya if it is your first time to explain all that he has to offer. Food was very good as I did the pulled pork sandwich. With the gold BBQ sauce it made for a pretty tasty dinner. Relatively quick on order placing and food as well. Price was fair for what you got and I think it is best BBQ in Cbus area. Only down side is Sunbury is a drive away from everything so that is a little of a bummer. Defiantly worth it to try if you are in northern part of Cbus already. The food was spot on, smoked to perfection. I am a sucker for brisket but had to try some chicken so I went for the fat man's special. You get all the sides they carry plus 3 meats. Phenomenal, the brisket had a beautiful thick smoked flavor. But the grilled chicken stole the show, so much that when there was an extra chicken leg left from kids meal I made quick room for it. Got the brisket and while it was good and the sauces were good, I really wish they would give an option to trim most of the fat off before serving it. Among the places I've tried only Bob's brisket in Lancaster does that. Having to dissasemble, dissect my meal, and reassemble it ruins the experience. Honestly who eats a sandwhich that is 50% fat? I have had the pleasure of stepping into the Fat Man's house twice and each time has been exceptional. The BBQ sauces are all good, but my preference is for the Gold. The pulled pork and chicken sandwiches are my personal favorites, with the fried chicken (Friday nights, y'all) coming in next. The side dishes are great, too. I'm a big fan of the dirty beans. One of the best parts of the experience is the welcome environment and hearing the description of menu items to all the first-timers. Sorry. This review is long overdue. I've frequented Oak Hill at least 6 times since my first review and, I have to say, whatever I had to complain about -- forget it! It was either an off day or they've been perfecting the BBQ since then. They even fixed the sign problem (the one from the original business) -- Gone! Now...I smoke my own turkey for Thanksgiving (you just can't reheat a smoked turkey and get the same kind of juiciness that you can when it comes straight off the smoker...and brined the way we like it), but we did order one of their smoked hams this year. Outstanding! -- tender, smoked just enough, and not dry. This place has become, hands down, THE place to get BBQ in the Northern Columbus area. Forget the BBQ Shack in Westerville.
