Panini and penne vodka
Sarah X.

No one greeted my friend and I at the door until we looked for someone to seat us. Our server was nice, but the overall vibe (and food) was subpar. There were so many flies flying around our table, and the interior was very bare. I ordered the penne vodka; while it tasted really good, I quickly realized just how much butter/ oil the pasta was soaking in, which was pretty gross.

Delicious

Another fantastic dinner. This is our Friday night go to spot. Excellent beer menu to go along with great service!

$16 cheese steak. That's it. This is not just half of it..

My dad didn't feel like Mexican so when we got home, I mentioned it to my husband and he wanted to try it out. When we got there, there were a couple of tables taken, and they were all speaking Spanish. Good sign #1. The place was clean, bright, and cheerful. Good sign #2. The server (? He seemed to be doing every job there) greeted us and told us to sit wherever we wanted and then asked us what we wanted to drink. I got water and my husband ordered horchata. It was really good and not too sweet like it can be. I ordered a huarache with carnitas and my husband ordered chilaquiles with red and green sauce. The chilaquiles were so good he had them gone in a couple of minutes. I didn't have a high expectation of my lunch because it was not on a masa base, it was a tortilla. I still ordered it because I figured the tortilla would be a lighter meal for lunch and I wouldn't feel as drained as if it was masa. My huarache had a base of some of the best refried beans I've had in a long time and let me tell you about the carnitas! In the area we used to live in, carnitas was generally served as shredded pork. Here, it was chunks of meat and I was a little anxious that they would be tough. But oh, the meat was so tender! I barely touched it with my fork and it fell apart! I barely had to chew it. I was really only chewing the tortilla. It was flavorful without being too spicy, so the taste of the carnitas could shine through. Honestly, this place is a little unassuming hole in the wall type of place in a weird strip mall that also has a surgery center and a gym in it. But you know, that's the kind of place that outshines any big places.

I usually would dabble on Chile Rellenos for any first time meal at a Mexican joint, but I need nachos and this place delivered, especially with the portion. I have heard this place is spotty with prep and taste consistency, I've had them twice for nachos, the other for carnitas for pick up and they had everything backed nicely and in a party tray. Not a lot of seating and they charge extra for credit, but that's how they get more bang for your buck. Love decently close and I'd go here, hands down, for my nachos craving... pricey, but as mentioned, big serving.

The mall itself has been filling out with more restaurants lately but this spot has always been my go-to when I'm craving hearty Mexican food. I first stumbled on it years ago while getting my uniform tailoring done next door and it's been a favorite ever since. The food is consistently delicious and filling. They start you off with complimentary chips and salsa, which is always a nice touch while waiting for your meal. My usual order comes with a great mix of tacos, rice, and refried beans, and the portions are generous enough that you definitely won't leave hungry.....though you might leave in a food coma! The interior isn't exactly glamorous, but once the food arrives, you'll probably forget all about how it looks inside. I also appreciate that they now accept credit cards though they still offer a discount if you pay with cash. Overall, this place delivers great value, big plates, and tasty comfort food in an unassuming spot.

They are doing an enormous takeout business as well. They bring over what is definitely homemade chips and a very heavy on the cilantro salsa, but it was excellent. More on the watery side restaurant style. We ordered the medium sized guacamole, which was huge. I can't imagine what the large looks like. My own guac I would have had diced tomato and some jalapeño in there, but it was still super fresh and delicious. We both ordered street tacos. They're on white corn tortillas. Very simple, squeeze lime on there, you got diced onion and cilantro. It was excellent and my date said hers were the al Pastor and she liked hers as well. I would've liked a more intimate dining setting, but I highly recommend this place if you want authentic delicious Mexican food and it was reasonable But if you've got four or more, I would definitely recommend a reservation on the weekends even if you have 2 maybe. No seafood enchiladas which was I guess was in line with their menu. Oh, and also they give you like a grilled cactus blade. I don't know what else to call it. It was delicious.

I'd known about them for years, but they were kind of out of the way for me. The place is small and unassuming, which gave me high expectations, as sometimes I find myself having lower expectations for a more "Mexican" decorated place (I'm wrong as often as I'm right). As far as the Fish Tacos went, they do not serve the Baja style fried fish tacos that I'd grown up on out west, so it was a downer when the plater arrived and I saw the tacos filled with chopped fish cooked in broth. That said, at least the taco was well filled and the fish had a very good flavor. The broth turned out to be a major issue, as the (very tasty) single layer tortillas were soaking up the broth while I ate the first taco, and the second and third tacos both split at the seams and fell apart after one or two bites. A second tortilla may have prevented this debacle, but I won't order fish tacos here again. I'd have loved a fish soup made in this style. The next visit I tried Tacos de Tripa (fried pork intestines), which is my current go to taco style. They were very good, and I enjoyed the heck out of them. They were nice and crispy as I'd requested, and the excellent tasting tortilla made them an excellent choice. My wife had a cheese tamal that had ribbons of poblanos inside as well, and it was also very good with the poblanos providing a nice balance to the heaviness of the cheese. I'd get both again in a heartbeat. My third visit was at lunchtime, and I opted for a Torta de Chili Relleno--essentially a chili relleno sandwich. It wasn't the first I've ever had, and it's a fave torta when I see them on the menu--which isn't often. The torta arrived with a nice sized chili relleno along with the usual smear of beans, lettuce, tomatoes, avocado, and a couple pieces of queso fresco served on a lightly toasted roll. Overall, the torta was very good tasting, and it went down nicely. However, I wish they used a little firmer roll instead of the soft one they did use. The torta was big and warm, and a crustier roll would have been better. The soft one used was near to collapsing under the weight of the ingredients. Fries are an option on the many torta options for a couple dollars extra. In retrospect, I'd have liked to have added a layer of fries to the sandwich for a little extra kick. All in all, El Gallo Tropical is a place I'll continue to go to. The staff is very friendly, and the menu is extensive (too big?). Although I had them initially at three stars after my first visit for fish tacos, the second (4+) and third (4-) visits have raised them up, and I'm rounding up to a four.

If you're in the Columbus, NJ area and craving flavorful, authentic Mexican food, El Mariachi Loco…read moreMexican Grill is a spot you need to check out. It's become a local favorite, and after eating there, it's easy to see why. First off, the service is great--super friendly and fast, even when it gets busy. You never feel like you're waiting around, and the staff makes you feel welcome from the second you walk in. The portion sizes are generous, and you get a lot of high-quality food for what you pay. Whether you're ordering a burrito, tacos, or something off their full entrée menu, you'll leave full and satisfied. The burritos especially are solid--hearty, flavorful, and well put together, and the rest of the menu holds up just as well. Everything is seasoned perfectly and cooked with care. The interior decor is really fun and vibrant, with a lot of attention to detail. It's one of those places that's actually worth sitting down to eat in just to enjoy the atmosphere. It's colorful, cozy, and adds to the whole experience. That said, it's a little pricey for Mexican food, especially compared to quick-service spots--but the quality and setting justify it. You're definitely paying for a sit-down experience with authentic flavors and not just a quick bite. Overall, El Mariachi Loco is one of the best spots around for Mexican food--a great local place with bold flavors, friendly service, and an atmosphere that makes it worth a visit again and again.
