Tried Afghan Kabob just outside the base and was seriously impressed. The place is spacious and clean and the food was amazing. I ordered the chicken kabob which came with rice and pita. Everything was packed with rich herb flavor and tasted incredibly fresh. Now the tough part. The wait was long. Really long. But here is the thing. He cooks everything fresh as the orders come in. It is not mass produced or sitting under heat lamps. So while the wait was frustrating it makes sense given the quality of the food. The man running the place is likely the owner and seems to wear all the hats. Cashier, cook, server, everything. I give him a lot of credit for holding it all down and still turning out such great food. If you decide to go plan ahead because the food is worth it. Just do not go in a rush. read more

It's been a year since I've moved and I still can't get this restaurant out of my mind. The food was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. Excellent customer service! Both the chef and cashier are great! You get treated like family once they start recognizing you. I genuinely miss them! I hope they are doing well. My favorite things to eat were the falafel platter, flatbread dipped in the green sauce, baklava, French fries, and samosas dipped in the green sauce (the chef pronounces them something like "sambosas". Say that and you might make his day haha). The food has unbelievable flavor. Everything is perfect every time. This is the best food I've had in my entire life. No lie! The chef is so talented! Love that guy! I will have to make my way back to see them! The food is that good that I would make a trip to NJ all the way over from OK! Every person I took there fell in love with the food as well. My mom wants to make a trip over there from FL! That should tell you how great it is! P.S. the restaurant is full of some really cool decor. There's some traditional Afghan pieces. Awesome photos and wall of military patches. This place is amazing I am so glad that I didn't judge a book by its cover. I landed on the kebab and I asked for purple cabbage and it tasted great. I have spent some time in Germany so I know a good kebab when I taste one and please believe that I will be back! , I ate lunch at around 12 PM and as I am writing this review I am still full I finished all of my kebab and most of my french fries. I've been meaning to post a review for this restaurant. My husband and I have eaten here on plenty of occasions and we are never let down. We always get their gyros and trust me they fill you up. The flavor components and sauce and the meat is so tender. That sh*t leaves my mouth watering. The fries are amazing too. Cooked just right and even seasoned. A small business owner, very simple menu, amazing food, perfectly seasoned and cooked meats, fresh ingredients, simple atmosphere/seating, paper and plastic everything, and cash only. This is what I love about eating and reviewing food - discovering places like this where you get to taste a chef's talent and passion for what he does in the kitchen. Hands down the best Afghan food I've ever tasted (no exaggeration here)! I've tried many and none came close to the food they serve here. Portion is always generous and spices are just perfect. Ordered the lamb and chicken comes with rice and salad. You get plenty of meat with it plus a side of chickpeas and a drink for $20. Worth the wait. Lamb is not chewy at all and reminds me of steak. If you eat steak eat lamb. Chef/owner was very friendly and said I would love the food and I did. He puts a lot of time in preparing his meat and you can tell. Passed this place and was intrigued. Afghan Kabob? Though I'm somewhat familiar with middle eastern cuisine, it's not everyday you see an Afghan restaurant. The restaurant is situated in a small retail lot with Chinese and Japanese cuisine and a Spanish owned liquor store bordering. Though small, the restaurant does provide ample room to sit and eat if necessary. However, if you're easily offended or with family I'd advise against dining in. I visited on a Friday around 630pm and upon entering was immediately greeted with a flurry of expletives. The owner/chef was shooting the sh#t with a small group of rowdy, inebriated teens which the chef was seemingly proud to entertain. He was loudly cracking offensive, vulgar, and expletive riddled jokes from across the room. If I was with my wife or anyone I respected I would have had to immediately vacate the premises. His restaurant, his rules, so who am I to complain? Anyway, I was alone, hungry, and heard the food was good, so I pressed on. The menu is relatively small; six combo menu items to include, chicken/beef/lamb kabobs, gyros, naan, and chickpeas. I ordered the #1 (Chicken Kabobs) for $11.99. 35 minutes of drugged up kids filling the room with expletives, dick jokes/dining room loitering from the chef, and disorganization from the rest of the staff and my food was ready. Food timing reference; my order was the only one they had to prepare and it still took 35 minutes. As expected my to go order was served as dine in. No worries, they boxed it up for me and even included a side of chickpeas I didn't order...and charged me for. Whatever, at this point I was ready to go. Two things I wasn't told prior to ordering; 1. Cash only 2. Drinks come with the meal, so don't forget to grab a drink from cooler next to the register. When I, finally, got home to eat I was more than pleasantly surprised. The chicken was plentiful and looked beautiful. It came placed over a huge serving of afghani basmati rice with a large side salad, naan, and two different sauces. One similar to tzatziki and the other a sort of green spicy salsa. This generous portion could have easily served three adults. Though a little on the dry side (nothing a bit either sauce couldn't fix) it was still absolutely delicious. Bottom line, I'd absolutely order food from here again. Call in an order, pick it up 35 minutes later, don't forget cash, and eat leftovers for three days. That's what's up. read more

You should know that everything is cooked when ordered, so bring something to read. When the food came, the lamb was on a bed of rice with a salad. The smell was amazing and you could tell it was hot. On my first bite of lamb my mouth exploded with spices. I cannot describe it. The lentils mixed with chick peas, the hot bread with a bit of a crunch, the side sauces. The saffron/fennel?? (Not even sure) in the rice, delicate but perfect. All I could think was why I had not been here before. The owner comes out to check on how you like the food. I definitely will be going back!! The beef was flavorful and the rice was delicious, it had a curry flavor to it. You are given two sauces which were both excellent, I wasn't sure if one of them was a salad dressing but I tried both with my salad and they were both phenomenal. Also you can't use credit or debit because they're cheap and want to cut down costs and have all their profit go to them and not pay a percentage to the card companies. Doesn't update menu so there's only like 5 things. The guy at the register with glasses will get smart with you and say "everything on our menu is up there" basically being a dick. Speaking of that guy with the glasses at the cash register he's one of those cynical short guys so if you sense he's giving you attitude or being a dick he's probably just over compensating for something. I used to be stationed at McGuire so this was easy to hop right outside the Ft Dix gate and grab lunch... but If you aren't stationed at McGuire/Ft Dix, this place might feel in the middle of nowhere... but it's worth the drive... trust me!!! I am no longer stationed here, but still make a 45 minute trip JUST to pick up and get our fix. Tips: 1.) Located in a small strip mall right outside the Ft Dix gate, across from Taco Bell and right next to 7/11. They have pizzeria bench style seating inside if you are dining in. 2.) Orders are made fresh... so you are either going to wait a bit if you're dining in or should call 45 minutes out from when you expect to pick up. If that irritates you, well, then find another Afghan restaurant, which I guarantee you doesn't match this place. 3.) You have your pick of chicken or lamb with rice or either of the two on a gyro. I always go for the #1 (chicken, rice with a side salad (all comes in one box) -- the serving size is PLENTY... and I always have leftovers, which are just as good reheated the next day... there is also an option for the meat over a larger salad, but this is no fun, as the rice is delicious! But yeah, I get it, I diet too! 4.) They have a white sauce and a spicer green sauce... both are AMAZING! Slab it on everything... the salad, the chicken, the rice, ALL OF IT! 5.) if you're lucky and nice, they'll throw in a container of their special chick peas. The same with the sauces, just pour some on top of your chicken and rice... put the sauce on top -- eat with a fork or the pita that comes with the meal (or your hands if you're into that). 6.) Everything is so fresh here. The salad is crisp, the rice is deliciously flavored, the chicken is out of this world. No fat, grizzle... all white breast meat. Perfection! If you've followed along with my reviews over the years (I'm kidding, I know no one has) you'll notice a significant lack of Middle Eastern/South Asian food. It just isn't my forte and it's never going to be my first choice when someone says 'Hey, what do you want for lunch?' With that out of the way let me say this...the next time I'm down at Fort Dix for any possible reason, I'm going back to Afghan Kabob for lunch!!! I'm pretty sure Adam D (who was with me at lunch) is going to agree with the five stars I'm giving too (and we all know he's much more stingy with his stars). This place was recommended by some people we were meeting with so we decided to give it a try... As we were walking in I noticed a couple guys walking out looking disappointed...never a good sign. We stuck our heads in and there were plenty of open seats (it's not a huge place, but big enough) and we were able to step right up to order. The deal is that you order at the counter, sit down, they bring you your food, and you pay when you're done. Anyway, being a kind of food I always play safe I ordered the chicken kabob combo (comes with rice and salad). There were eight of us so it took a little while for our food to come out but it was SOOOOO worth the wait. The chicken was done perfectly with a very slight char but super tender on the inside and it was seasoned with...I have no idea, but it was fabulous! Very different seasoning from what I've had in Turkish and Persian restaurants, but excellent nonetheless. I added a little of the 'hot' sauce on the table, but it didn't need it. The guys also brought us plates of bread and bowls of chick peas in a sauce that was so good I could have just eaten them with a spoon rather than mixing them into my rice. Oh yeah, the rice...ummmm, never had anything like it, but I'd eat it all the time if I could. I tasted a hint of fennel (I think), but I don't know what else made it so good...I should have asked. Adam D ordered lamb, which I usually don't like, but he let me try a bit of it and it was so good I may get it myself next time. This was the first time I had eaten Afghan food and while I started this review with "it's not my forte," I'm pretty damn confident that this just got moved WAY up on my "where do you want to eat lunch" scale! There was enough food here for two people to eat and have a good lunch so I walked away stuffed absolutely stuffed. The two great guys who were running the place when we were there (owners or workers) were incredibly friendly and generous. One last thing...the parking lot here isn't huge for a strip with at least three restaurants so parking could be an issue...maybe we were just lucky.
