    Making slime!
    Kim H.

Under normal circumstances, planning a kid's birthday party is about appealing to me as a swift poke in the eye. But now that my first born is getting older, I figured it was time to suck it up & let her have her first "real" birthday party with her school friends since she was turning 9. Enter Dana. She is your magical, artistic, creative, fun party planning fairy aka the owner of Oahu Bright Lab. I told her that my daughter is obsessed with unicorns & she immediately came up with a bunch of ideas to choose from (painting a unicorn cake, sewing a purse charm, painting a wall hanging). We decided to go with the last option. I also mentioned that my daughter loves slime & she said we could do a slime-making activity as well. The party was an absolute success! Upon arrival, the guests got to help color a hand drawn banner with my daughter's name, as well as paint a blank "cake". Dana then discussed abstract painting & gave the girls a chance to practice painting on paper before painting their wooden unicorns. Who needs paint brushes when you have q-tips, squares of bubble wrap, rollers & sponge-tipped tools? The girls were encouraged to be as messy & creative as they wanted to be (my four year old was living her best life because splattering paint is definitely not allowed at home). After that they washed up & had a snack; we brought spam musubis, chips & juice. Then the girls moved on the making slime, which seemed to be everyone's favorite part. Dana provided assorted glitter & little clay flower slices to add to the slime to make it extra special. We then sang happy birthday, ate cupcakes & it was time for everyone to go home. Whew! Dana & her assistant made everything so easy & the party ran like a well-oiled machine. We could not have asked for a better experience. Thank you, Oahu Bright Lab! Other info: -Oahu Bright Lab can accommodate 12 kiddos, birthday boy/girl included. -Dana will give you directions to their back parking lot, which can be accessed from Anuenue St which makes drop off/pick up easy for parents. Make sure to include the info on your invitations. -They do not have a fridge so bring food/snacks that doesn't need to be refrigerated.

Ever got pissed about BS work stuff? (SMASH that monitor!)…read more That guy who cut you off (without blinkers) near University, have you foaming at the mouth? (THROW that glass tea cup!) That lying, stink breath, snake of a property manager who takes weeks to respond & overbilled you, make you see red? (SWING that metal pipe!) You ever feel so angry, you want to scream and break sh*t without someone calling the cops? (SLEDGEHAMMER that plate!). (All of this is being done legally & safely, of course, with safety suits and helmets/gloves, if you decide to drop some $$ and spend some time here.) There is a good selection of shattery breakables to choose. We were given 45 minutes but the two of us finished in about 20 (I guess we had a lot to unleash!). It gets hot in the helmet/suit, especially when you're expelling all that rage, so expect a good workout (cathartic even!) Call/check out their site for discounts/promos (including Kama'aina). Parking: lots of garage parking around the Ward/Kaka'ako area, if you don't mind a short warmup walk over.

Tried Out a Rage Room for the First Time - Totally Worth It!…read more I've been hearing about this rage room for a while and finally decided to check it out. I called ahead to ask about any discounts for locals or birthdays, and they told me they do offer a local discount with valid ID -- nice little bonus! They also said they had availability that day, so I figured, why not? The whole experience was super satisfying. Ever feel like breaking something at work but don't want to get fired? Break n Anger is the place to let that urge out safely and legally. Here's how it works: You get to choose 2 items from the top shelf and 5 items each from shelves 2, 3, and 4 -- so about 17 items total to smash. After signing the waivers, you suit up in a jumpsuit, gloves, and a helmet. They offer earplugs too, but I skipped those -- the sound of breaking stuff is half the fun. Honestly, the time flew by -- I went all in for 10 minutes and it felt like seconds. I probably should've paced myself, but I really wanted to let the rage out. No regrets though -- it was super fun, and I can totally see this being a great team-building activity. I'm definitely planning to go back and try the premium items next time!

If you're coming here by yourself I would travel light so you can fit everything you need in lockers. There are about 2 private areas, one is double the size of others. It looks like the smaller area can fit about 20 adults "comfortably," but I'm also going off the assumption there's not much decorations, some space for food, and kids are all playing. If the spaces are not for a private party you can still use them too, but it's at your own risk to leave your stuff in the open. The level my son is at is lots of crawling but the new environment may have been why he mostly sat and just looked around - that and the kids running around. There was only a small area where he could comfortably roam, which I didn't mind because it makes the free admission for him worth it and I only paid $5 since I was with a group. Overall, I can see why this is a lifesaver for parents to let kids get their energy out. It literally is just the 24s of childhood, so who knows, my son may join the membership crew one day. But we do live more central, so maybe not this location.

We've been to a few discovery museums (mostly in California) but this one particularly impressed me. The staff was constantly sanitizing the toys and touch surfaces (literally, we would leave an activity and then the worker would spray down everything we had touched). I also liked that they had baskets for people to place toys that needed to be sanitized. Very impressive, and we felt very safe. You could spend HOURS in this place-- especially if your kids want to perform a few plays for you in the theater exhibit. All 3 of my kids loved this place and I wish we had arrived earlier because it was closing time before we knew it. I think this would make for an especially great visit on a bad weather day and/pr when your kids want a break from the beach or pool. If your hotel room isn't ready yet it would be a good way to let kiddos burn off some energy after a long flight too. If you have young kids I would say this is a MUST VISIT. For reference my children are 7, 5, and 2.5 years old (my 4th born is an infant and doesn't even sit or crawl yet so she was too young but I did see some older babies there who seemed to be enjoying themselves in the under 3 years old and under 5 years old zones).

Additionally, it would be good if there's more effort for cleaning and sanitizing toys throughout the day. I sat on something there and realized it was somebody's bodily fluid. I tried looking for a hand sanitizing station, but it was out. I ended up going to the bathroom to wash it off with soap. Despite this incident, I still like taking my kid here. I just bring hand sanitizing wipes and wash our hands as often as we can.

If it hadn't been for the care and compassion of Maya, I probably would've cried. I get motion sickness, but my kids were so excited about going on the submarine finally that I took Dramamine and threw caution to the wind. However, after the 15 to 20 minute boat ride over to the submarine, I'm sure my face was green. Although the submarine itself was 10 times more stable and calm and felt like the interior of an airplane, I was very concerned I was going to get sick in front of lots of strangers and had to exit the submarine very quickly. I left my tween kids there to experience the submarine by themselves, which is fine because my oldest son is on two swim Teams and basically a lifeguard. However, the boat had to come back and get me off the top of the submarine and it was very embarrassing and once again, I cannot say enough about how well the staff handled it and didn't make me feel silly. or stupid at all. I even bought some of the photos to laugh about the incident later. We had already gotten the military discount, but they offered to refund my portion of the submarine ride, which I very much appreciated. I would recommend this company to all of my friends. My sons loved seeing the 9 sea turtles & Hawaiian wildlife.

After you enter the shop, you can decide whether you want to do their basic package of gel nails + unlimited nail stickers or you can do their upgraded package to have unlimited charms and gems and sparkles. I recommend choosing their unlimited charm bar because they have so many cute items to decorate your nails with! The nail shop is a little different than your typical nail salon. Depending on whether you're using the nail stickers or the charms will be a different process but both super simple. MY NIECE ATTENDED HERE! HER MOM ASKED ME TO WRITE ON YELP AS SHE DOESN'T HAVE AN ACCOUNT YET…read more AFTER HEARING HER STORY! I AM BEYOND UPSET! My daughter attended an art class at your studio and created a drawing of a tropical fish. We were told that because her artwork was so well done, the studio wanted to use the design to create stickers for sale. In return, my 8-year-old daughter was promised a sticker of her own design. When I later followed up, I was informed that I would need to come to the studio in person to pick up the sticker. Since we do not live nearby, I politely asked whether a few stickers could simply be mailed to us using regular postage. Instead, I was told that my daughter would receive only one sticker and that I would need to purchase any additional copies. What disappointed me most was not the value of the sticker itself--it costs only about fifty cents--but the way the situation was handled. Our family spent over $500 on classes during winter break, and I felt that mailing a few stickers featuring my daughter's own artwork would have been a thoughtful gesture, especially after the studio chose to use her design for a product. It has now been over six months, and we still have not received the promised sticker. My daughter continues to ask about it, and it is difficult to explain why something she was promised never arrived. Had the sticker never been offered in the first place, there would have been no expectation and no disappointment. This experience left me feeling that customer appreciation was lacking. While the monetary value involved is very small, keeping promises--especially to a child--is important. Unfortunately, because of this experience, I would not choose to enroll in future classes or recommend the studio to others.

At first we didn't know what to expect with art class. We didn't know anyone who attended art class here but we just wanted to try because my daughter loves art. It was such a good experience. Her teacher, Mrs Okano, is so creative with all their projects. Each week they were working on something new and interesting. My daughter was always excited to be going to art class. It's really nice that the class size is small and Mrs Okano is a great teacher. She's very patient with them and has them really explore their own creative side rather than each kid just make a copy of the teacher. At the end of the two sessions there was an art exhibition. We got to see all of the art work from all of the classes they offered. My daughter had about 6-7 projects that she completed. You could really see her growth from the first project to the last.
