Our kids just started taking lessons at Hawaii Academy on Pearl Harbor this past month, and my 7 year old son's instructor, Mr. Paul, out of no where during their class told my son that he's ugly, and the only reason his mom tells him he that he's handsome is to make him happy. I get that older generations, generally men, try to be funny by teasing, and he may not have meant any harm by it. But my son doesn't know this teacher well at all yet to understand his "humor" and we don't talk like that to each other in our family. Our son said he felt really embarrassed and caught off guard by him saying that in front of his class. He has adhd and intense RSD, and we signed him up for these classes to work on building his self esteem and confidence. We've talked to him about how other peoples words don't matter, and to ignore other kids if they're rude. We told him how some people don't know how to be funny without making jokes at the expense of others, and that is only representative of them, not him. I feel like it's a weird situation because it's an adult instructor though, not another child being rude in this scenario. My husband talked to their management and was told that they would be dealing with it, and our son is in a different class with a different instructor now. My husband also asked Mr. Paul about it in person when he saw him at the gym. Paul didn't apologize, but snickered at him about it. I was really hesitant to talk about this, and was worried I may have been overreacting, but after talking with a few other parents with children who have attended classes with Paul- this is unfortunately not an isolated negative incident that occurred only with our son. Other parents have made complaints about him being inappropriate with their children as well. I don't want to speak on behalf of other parents' experiences though and hope they're willing to share them here too. There is also a review on their Facebook page from 2019 that says "There was a coach named Paul. He is very crappy in a sexual assault way to little girls. That is why we stopped going Hawaii Gymnastic Academy. Please do background checks of your staff." I just wanted to post this to let other parents who may have felt bad vibes from this instructor know that they are not alone. It really worries me about how many children may have reported feeling uncomfortable with him over the years, considering he still works there with access to children as young as 3 years old. I'm not sure if drop off/pick up events have opened back up at this branch, but there's not a chance that I'd ever feel comfortable leaving my little ones there alone there under his care. If he speaks like this to children openly and comfortably during class where their parents are present in the building, I cannot imagine how he behaves when parents are not there. I cannot speak to the sexual assault suggestion made about him on their Hawaii Academy's Facebook reviews from 2019, but had I seen that review prior to signing our kids up for classes there, there's no chance we would have let our son be placed in his class. It looks as though their reviews on their Facebook page are disabled now. Our younger daughters (3 and 5 years old) have had wonderful instructors there, and the front desk employees are so kind and sweet. I don't mean to bash this place as a whole. I was really hoping that it was just a miscommunication because we were so excited to sign up there for classes. The location, available classes, prices, and other instructors are great. However, what occurred was not a miscommunication, and there seems to be a pattern of inappropriate behavior with Paul. I will update here on how this situation is handled.

Our son is 6 years old and already has his front and back flips. Awesome coaching staff. Every school project he does has gymnastics in it now. It's his happy place

This is a review for the preschool gymnastics classes. They have a great routine for the kids where obstacles and exercises differ weekly. The place sort of smells of sweat since ventilation isn't the best (just fans and open doors). But I absolutely love that they allow make-up sessions if your child is sick or you simply can't make a class. No questions asked. But I am disappointed that some teachers are less friendly and patient than others. My kid's former teacher was a young, grumpy girl who did not seem to enjoy teaching or being there at all, so after a couple months of dealing with her, I switched my daughter to a friendlier instructor for a different day. I did notice some teachers also teach for 50 mins while others teach a full hour as well... I wish there was more consistency with the program and service. Parking is indeed difficult as another parent mentioned. I typically arrive 15 mins early only to be late because it's all about timing. It's all street parking, which isn't a big deal, but it is frustrating to be driving for 15-20 mins sometimes to find parking far away from the class. As such, I have no mixed feelings for this place, but because of their flexibility, I keep coming back to this location.

I dropped in for a couple of adult classes and they were really fun! I paid $34 per class which isn't that bad considering it's 2 hours long. There's an instructor who will spot you if you want, they do a quick guided stretch, trampoline, tumbling on floor, and a short work out at the end.

    Cirque class. Tuesday and Thursday.

We love Hawaii Academy. My son has been taking classes here for 5 years. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly. Monday, Wednesday and Friday are "fun nights" children and adults can come out and use the equipment. Only downside: not enough parking.

I cheered in high school and college, so…read morebasically I get to live my best life watching my 8-year old enjoy my favorite sport of all time! We're currently in our second year of cheer and she almost has her back handspring and is learning to be a flyer on their junior team. I love picking her up from cheerleading and hearing her excitedly tell us all about her practice time. Pros: -Top level, quality instruction. I WISH I could have gone to this cheer gym when I was in high school. They're really stringent about technique and won't allow you to progress onto a new skill until you have foundational skills in place. Tumbling this year has been split by skill level so there's more time to practice and improve. Coaches expect a lot out of the teams but I believe they're always fair and I'm really happy they're not easy during practice. -The teams are awesome and they really improve exponentially from the start to the end of the season. Last year our daughter wasn't on a travel team and I'm really looking forward to seeing her compete at a national competition. It's not only improved her physical skills as an athlete, but it's given her a different level of confidence that can only be gained through hard work and tenacity. -Island Elite is located in town. There are other all-star gyms but I don't want to have to fight through traffic to get there. Cons: -Cheer is not a cheap sport like soccer, and monthly tuition for all-star cheer is $200+ a month for three practices a week, plus $30-$60 for tumbling classes. I still totally think it's worth it because you're committing to being the best! In addition to your monthly practice tuition you'll also spend $1000+ on cheer uniforms, choreography and approximately $100-$200 on each competition your team competes in. Currently the all-star teams compete in two local competitions and 1-2 mainland competitions in the Spring. If traveling for cheer is not something you want to do, they also have cheer teams which practice once a week and only do local competitions. I think this is a good alternative if you're unsure of the time and financial commitment. The gym also offer opportunities to fundraise throughout the year. -During our first year of cheer I didn't always feel as though communication was the best, but now that we're on our second year I feel as though we are a lot better equipped in terms of what to expect and what questions to ask. -Island Elite is located in a warehouse that shares the same parking lot as Costco Iwilei. Unfortunately the practice gym is not air conditioned so it gets really hot especially during the Summer months.

I stayed at work one day rather than go back to my home office in order to be closeby and attend the adult gymnastics class. Athough the facility was nice, it's really tiny. The size of a single company warehouse. They sure do get creative with the space - in that there was a private lesson happening and the kid was tumbling through our class space as well. This would be an amazing aerial studio (high ceilings) but it's pretty cramped, although I have to say they do their best to utilize the space efficiently. This review is for adult gymnastics only. In short: it's the kids class, with adults participating. Not very satisfying. And my warmup was led by like a six year old. As an adult participant, I was not impressed, but don't keep this from bringing your children.

Every single month we were charged on the 20th then I get an email from them saying that my billing date is the 17th. My charge did not go through for the next month yet and I cancelled 48 hours prior to when I was regularly charged yet they refuse to cancel the pending charge. Their customer service is horrible and they just seem money hungry. I have been to other locally owned gyms who would easily refund us if we emailed them 48 hours prior to when they bill but I guess this gym does not care about their clients. The overall gym is very small, there is another review for adult gymnastics that gives it 2/3 stars and I have to agree with them. You spend more than half the class stretching and maybe 10 minutes doing actually gymnastics. Sometimes you only do the activity once because of how little time you're given doing actual gymnastics. I would recommend another place that has two hour adult gymnastics for half the price!

Each session begins with a short two-minute warm-up song--usually "Freeze Dance" from YouTube--after which the class shifts to free play with parent supervision. The setup includes a platform to jump into a foam pit, a long trampoline, large foam blocks to climb and slide on, and occasionally a child-height balance beam or bar. There's also plenty of open mat space for rolling, running, and general movement. The coach mostly walks around saying hello to parents, but unfortunately doesn't interact much with the kids. I understand that it's a tough age--two-year-olds don't follow directions well--so I get that the class leans heavily on open play. Still, it feels like something's missing. The right coach with the right energy can really engage kids at this age, but I felt like I had to be that energy just to keep my daughter even slightly interested. This is a good short-term class--maybe for a month--if you just need something for your kiddo to do. But in my experience, most kids in our class started losing interest by the 20-minute mark. I've heard the 3-year-old class is more structured, so I may give that a try instead. They do offer one free trial class, so definitely take advantage of that!

I stayed in Honolulu for about a month and wanted to get some practice aerial sessions in. I just emailed them and it was really easy and flexible booking a session. I signed up for open gym sessions since their group classes aren't available yet and I didn't want to get private lessons when I wouldn't be in the state for too long. I loved that people practicing there are serious about their aerial practice since some other gyms I visited in Honolulu were a bit lackluster. I felt really safe with all the precautions as well and they also allowed me to rent their silks which was great! I did find the price fairly high for open gym sessions which was about $25-$30 ($25 for 1 hour + $5 silk rental) considering I usually pay $35-40 per class session back in LA. Still, was glad I had access to a high quality aerial gym! It does get a bit hot in the room due to lack of air conditioning + masking. The studio is 2nd floor above a bike shop and you enter through the shop. I'm hoping to go back to Honolulu later this year for a bit so will be back. Hoping group class sessions will be back because I would love to take an actual class there.

Awesome blossom! About as unique as you can get for a birthday party!…read more This review is for a birthday party for kids held at Samadhi Hawaii. I arranged a private party via email with Nicole. It was easy to arrange, she was informative and quick to respond. They are able to accommodate kids of almost all ages (they made it work for a 3 year old!). The payment is per person who participates in the party and the hours are held outside of their normal business hours. They are located on Cooke St, about a block in from Ala Moana Blvd and inside of Boca Hawaii (there's a door just to the right of the cashier area to get upstairs). The birthday I held was on a Saturday evening, which worked out just fine. You can also rent tables/chairs/space within their studio and bring in your own food/drinks to conduct the birthday celebration after the lesson. They had 3 tables and roughly 20 some-odd chairs. Nicole and her instructors are hands on and great with the kids. The group was divided into smaller groups of 3s, which gave everyone much more hands on application on the apparatus'. The private lesson runs between one and a quarter to one and a half hours or so, including stretching before and after the lesson. They used the silks and the trapeze. The kids had a blast and learned a lot - most, if not all, had not tried anything like this before. After the kids ate, they continued to bounce and run on the mats that were left out. I'm not sure if this was ok with Nicole and her staff but no one stopped them and the kids continued their good time. It's literally the perfect location for kids and an extra special girly birthday! The adults are happy too when their kids are worn out! We brought in food and drinks to have dinner there after the instruction. They don't offer refrigerator space so you need to have everything in coolers or out in the open (note: everything needs to be carried upstairs). Also, no A/C so it does get warm. Would recommend food that can be outside. Also, due to no A/C, best to let guests know so they can dress accordingly. Parking I believe is street only. I'm guessing there is not usually a problem on the weekends (though a little walk from some stalls). Boca, which is the main tenant of the building, has a small lot, which is reserved for them. I didn't ask but if you ever go to Samadhi, best to check with them if guests can park in the Boca lot after hours (they closed at 5 on that Saturday). Another tip is that once Boca closes, the front door is closed so guests need to ring the doorbell so someone from Samadhi can let them in. If you're looking for a unique birthday party, I would highly recommend Samadhi! (Based on the party, I'm sure their normal lessons are GREAT too!)
