My granddaughter takes gymnastic instruction at Hawaii Academy. The Instructors are great w the kids and 60 minute circuits seem relevant (I'm not an expert). I see progression between age groups which is impressive. Teams from the academy win awards. My granddaughter seems to enjoy the program and is making progress. Fees are reasonable for the weekly one hour class. The gym is located in an industrial complex on the west side of Honolulu. Parking is a chore and walking into the complex is downright dangerous with toddlers and cars flying. The entrance needs to have a car-free zone to improve safety. Seating for parents is manageable but uncomfortable. Restrooms are clean. read more

Update: It's been YEARS since i came here lol. It felt like i was in high school all over again. Still same ole' peeps, and same ole' equipment. Nothing really changed except for the price of the hour (in my days used to be $6/hr. Today it's $10/hour & $5/half hr). They give you different wristbands which represents the time you paid for and planned to stay here for. Open gym happens every 1st Friday of the each month. Used to be open gym every Friday every week. When coming here, there are cubbies to place your items. Bring less and leave everything else at home. There's a sitting area for those who aren't jumping or tumbling too. Very minimal parking but a whole lot of street parking near Texaco gas/car wash. One thing that I'd highly recommend is just the sanitization or upkeep of the equipment. They don't have any wipes or sprays to provide and I'm not sure if they clean them at the end of the night. -./")\.- read more

I'll admit, when my daughter asked me if she could take gymnastics classes I raised my eyebrows. She is around the 95th percentile for height for her age range, 8 years old, and couldn't even attempt anything resembling a cartwheel. The other kids in her class were around 3 years younger and literally half her height. Not going to lie, I wasn't expecting too much, I figured that the proverbial ship had sailed. Well... her first class was 6 months ago and today I watched her execute a perfect cartwheel. Hawaii Academy does seem more focused on tumbling that any of the other gymnast skill sets (which my daughter appreciates) and even has classes specific to things like cheer or ninja training (which sounds so cool!) Located in Kalihi in what looks like a huge warehouse with a bunch of trampolines, whatever they're doing... works! So I am giving them 4 stars for turning my daughter's dream into reality. Our kids just started taking lessons at Hawaii Academy on Pearl Harbor this past month, and my 7 year old son's instructor, Mr. Paul, out of no where during their class told my son that he's ugly, and the only reason his mom tells him he that he's handsome is to make him happy. I get that older generations, generally men, try to be funny by teasing, and he may not have meant any harm by it. But my son doesn't know this teacher well at all yet to understand his "humor" and we don't talk like that to each other in our family. Our son said he felt really embarrassed and caught off guard by him saying that in front of his class. He has adhd and intense RSD, and we signed him up for these classes to work on building his self esteem and confidence. We've talked to him about how other peoples words don't matter, and to ignore other kids if they're rude. We told him how some people don't know how to be funny without making jokes at the expense of others, and that is only representative of them, not him. I feel like it's a weird situation because it's an adult instructor though, not another child being rude in this scenario. My husband talked to their management and was told that they would be dealing with it, and our son is in a different class with a different instructor now. My husband also asked Mr. Paul about it in person when he saw him at the gym. Paul didn't apologize, but snickered at him about it. I was really hesitant to talk about this, and was worried I may have been overreacting, but after talking with a few other parents with children who have attended classes with Paul- this is unfortunately not an isolated negative incident that occurred only with our son. Other parents have made complaints about him being inappropriate with their children as well. I don't want to speak on behalf of other parents' experiences though and hope they're willing to share them here too. There is also a review on their Facebook page from 2019 that says "There was a coach named Paul. He is very crappy in a sexual assault way to little girls. That is why we stopped going Hawaii Gymnastic Academy. Please do background checks of your staff." I just wanted to post this to let other parents who may have felt bad vibes from this instructor know that they are not alone. It really worries me about how many children may have reported feeling uncomfortable with him over the years, considering he still works there with access to children as young as 3 years old. I'm not sure if drop off/pick up events have opened back up at this branch, but there's not a chance that I'd ever feel comfortable leaving my little ones there alone there under his care. If he speaks like this to children openly and comfortably during class where their parents are present in the building, I cannot imagine how he behaves when parents are not there. I cannot speak to the sexual assault suggestion made about him on their Hawaii Academy's Facebook reviews from 2019, but had I seen that review prior to signing our kids up for classes there, there's no chance we would have let our son be placed in his class. It looks as though their reviews on their Facebook page are disabled now. Our younger daughters (3 and 5 years old) have had wonderful instructors there, and the front desk employees are so kind and sweet. I don't mean to bash this place as a whole. I was really hoping that it was just a miscommunication because we were so excited to sign up there for classes. The location, available classes, prices, and other instructors are great. However, what occurred was not a miscommunication, and there seems to be a pattern of inappropriate behavior with Paul. I will update here on how this situation is handled. read more

We've been going here for almost 7 years and my kids love it (minus two years during Covid, I guess). Yes, there are a few instructors that they haven't liked but it's been easy to switch until we have the right "fit". We've also had to change classes when our schedules change, etc. and it's easy to do. Yes, the prices have increased since Covid, but I don't see anything cheaper offered on island (and prices have increased everywhere). If you do more than one lesson a week or have more than one child enrolled it gets a little more affordable. I definitely recommend it, but as I said, feel free to drop into classes until you find the right fit. Parking can also be difficult but as kids get older you can drop your kids off or find street parking a couple blocks away. The staff (instructors and managers) have always been friendly and kind and as I said, both my kids love it here. I'm very disappointed of this academy. My daughter attended this school for less than 2 months however we had to cancel due to scheduling. I have been billed for the days we attended and have the receipts for it. Then I saw a charged to my account for an undisclosed bill. I was not notified nor emailed a receipt of this bill. This is very unacceptable. How can you guys run your business like this? Just because you have my credit card account, this gives you guys the right to just charge me for an undisclosed bill? My girls attend this place and they love it. There is a lot of time slots for them to choose from and the staff is so nice. Justine is so sweet and flexible with my daughters schedule. I'm constantly requesting changes due to their other obligations and Justine is always so understanding. I highly recommend this place. Such a cool spot for kids (and adults too) tucked away in Kalihi right off Waiakamilo Road. We attended a kid's party here and my son had a blast. They host a class for the party and the party host can bring food, drinks, cake, etc. for the celebration. Parking is limited. They have a few stalls right up front but when those fill up, you're on your own with street parking. Before the class began, we signed waivers and they provided socks for kids who didn't bring their own. The instructors began with an introduction and a warm up with basic moves and poses for the kids to learn while on the trampolines. We had a big group so the kids were split into two groups and half the class bounced around on the trampolines while the other half did an obstacle course. The kids each had a trampoline and were taught different moves. After bouncy time, they had a water break then we switched activities. They obstacle course was challenging for the smaller kids but they had a few "handicaps" for them. For instance, they had foam steps to add to a portion of the obstacle course where it was difficult for the shorter kids to jump onto the next object. There was another water break then the kids had dinner. Before we left, they handed out coupons for a free trial day. They have a pretty good variety of classes for gymnastics, cheerleading and even "ninja" classes. These classes aren't limited to kids-they offer a senior's class. The instructor was telling us that her grandparents take classes there. They have 2 restrooms, 3 water fountains and even a little snack shop where you can purchase candy. The instructors were great and this is a great overall place for kids to spend their time at. I will be bringing my son back to take advantage of the free class. read more

Paul is a terrible instructor and should not be allowed to work with young children. He has had multiple incident reports with children (both physical, sexual, verbal abuse), it has been addressed by the parents and seemingly nothing is done by the facility. I have wonderful things to say about the the other instructors, but I highly suggest avoiding him with your little ones. read more

This is a review for the preschool gymnastics classes. They have a great routine for the kids where obstacles and exercises differ weekly. The place sort of smells of sweat since ventilation isn't the best (just fans and open doors). But I absolutely love that they allow make-up sessions if your child is sick or you simply can't make a class. No questions asked. But I am disappointed that some teachers are less friendly and patient than others. My kid's former teacher was a young, grumpy girl who did not seem to enjoy teaching or being there at all, so after a couple months of dealing with her, I switched my daughter to a friendlier instructor for a different day. I did notice some teachers also teach for 50 mins while others teach a full hour as well... I wish there was more consistency with the program and service. Parking is indeed difficult as another parent mentioned. I typically arrive 15 mins early only to be late because it's all about timing. It's all street parking, which isn't a big deal, but it is frustrating to be driving for 15-20 mins sometimes to find parking far away from the class. As such, I have no mixed feelings for this place, but because of their flexibility, I keep coming back to this location. read more

I dropped in for a couple of adult classes and they were really fun! I paid $34 per class which isn't that bad considering it's 2 hours long. There's an instructor who will spot you if you want, they do a quick guided stretch, trampoline, tumbling on floor, and a short work out at the end. read more

Whoa! This place is awesome!! I came here for a trampoline party! What?? Yes, you read right. A trampoline party!! Can you imagine 50 people bouncing around, doing somersaults in the air, back flips, and parkour type moves? Well, here you have it. You can jump, bounce, do ariel stunts and flips.. all at the Hawaii Academy. So. Much. FUN!! And during normal business hours they teach gymnastics to young children. If you're looking for old school "gymnastics", this is the place to go. This is supposedly the largest gymnastics training studio in Hawaii. They send students to win world championships. They probably have 8 or more large trampolines, 2 "runway" style trampolines, ropes to climb, balance beams, double bars...You name it, they've got it. I only have little kids so I was just looking for something more than the "Gymboree" and "Wee Play" activities for my son. They have age appropriate classes (parent/infant, parent/toddler, preschool, K-1 etc.) every day of the week. They also will host birthday parties and on Friday nights they have a "date night" for parents where you can drop your kids off. For older kids they also host a slumber party on certain dates. During the summer, they offer what they call "summer school" Mon-Fri. They have a licensed elementary teacher who does the academic portion in the morning. "Recess" is basically time on the trampolines etc....and then in the afternoon they have the athletic extracurricular portion. The great thing about the "summer school" is that you can pay for only one week, or two weeks, or whatever fits your schedule. My 4.5yr old son was the youngest one the class, but he really had a good time and keeps asking when he can go back to "trampoline camp". Looks like I'll have to sign him up for a weekend class now. Only disadvantage is they have very few parking spaces in front of the wherehouse (which is in the middle of the industrial area of Kalihi). If you happen to go during a busy time, you have find street parking. read more

My quality of life has vastly improved since I started taking my holy terror of an offspring here 2x a week. I want to leap up and sing for joy, "I win you little, devious turd," as he crashes into a deep slumber post gym class. We started off with the free trial parent-tot class . My first impression was, "oh snap, this place smells like rotten feet" and "how on earth do they clean these fabric mats?" After we visited other gyms I came to the blunt realization that all gymnastic warehouses are hot and smell akin to decomposing cheese. Each one hour session is split into four 15 minute intervals. The first 15minutes is a warm-up run and stretch. The other three sessions rotate with obstacle course, trampolines, and longer trampoline with rope climb (I'm sure there is more accurate gym lingo to describe the stations). The sessions also vary with the age group of your child. Pros 1) Scheduled water breaks after every 15minute session. AND the water is COLD! 2) You get more for your $, especially for military families (20% off) compared to other gyms. Other gyms charge more and you only get a 45min session. 3) Quality coaching staff. These individuals aren't bored high-school kids looking to make a buck. On one visit my child developed a fear of heights after looking at the ground through a trampoline and spent 30minutes clinging to me. I really felt discouraged and would rather have my kid cling to me for free and in A/C. On our following visit Coach Mike worked through some crazy child psychology, made my son comfortable and got him jumping on the trampoline in 5 minutes. Cons 1) Parking blows unless you are in the first class of the morning. 2) Ventilation can be poor at times. 3) You will greeted each visit with the glorious stink feet smell. Don't worry, your nose will quickly become desensitized and you won't even realize you are frolicking in toe jam. Overall, gymnastics classes aren't for parents who want a sterile environment. For the dirty parents like myself this is a great place to encourage confidence, strength and add a bit of structure. read more

This is not a gymnastics academy. Its a poor excuse of a trampoline park. There are no make up's allowed even if your child is ill. The prices are ridiculously expensive unless you are military. The staff are poorly trained and many of the managers at the Honolulu location are snippy and rude. Don't waste your money or time even going for a free trial. The Waipahu location is not finished and is dirty and nasty. Ive seen cat feces on the floor mats. The Pearl Harbor location does not have a drinking fountain or bathrooms. I have seen a rat several times running around and traps set up as well. The Honolulu location is cleaner and has bathrooms but the staff are rude and not friendly and the parking is horrible. read more

Ah! My inner Dominique Dawes has been released! My friends and I came here for two hours and got a private group trampoline and gymnastics 101 lesson. It will a) be a lot of fun and b) make you feel really old and sore afterward. Well, and during. They taught us a ton of tricks on the trampolines (tabletop, flips, turns, etc.), let us use the beams and the rings, the bouldering wall...by the end of it, we were all sweaty, all smiles, and felt like future Olympic gymnasts (except about 10 years too old and 20 years too late in training). Plastered on the walls are pictures of the people who come to this gym--people of all ages, ranging from kids to 90 year old men getting their workout ON. This place is beyond fun, and I only wish they had gyms like this everywhere. To jump on a trampoline for hours doing flips---THAT IS LIFE:). read more

Both of my kids have attended classes here over the last 4 years. The environment is positive and the instructors care about the kids. The only thing negative comment i have is about the snack selections offered. 95% of the snacks are unhealthy. This goes starkly against the message that the news articles and photos posted all over the walls promote: health, longevity and being a champion athlete. Providing healthy snacks would help Hawaii Academy achieve a higher level of credibility as a place that cares about the health of your child. Hawaii Academy is a great place for my four year old to burn off energy, socialize with other kids, learn how to take instruction from other adults all while having fun. Coach Mike is a patient man who seems to enjoy the kids , laughs and has fun with them yet if necessary is firm. Great place. Downside is the extremely limited parking. read more

Pros: Super fun and interactive for my three year old. This is his first structured class of any kind and I like the structure and consistency with the running warm-up, stretching, obstacle course, and then trampoline. Classes start exactly on-time which is great! They do a good job separating the several classes going on at once and I feel that it is overall safe. They allow you to make up your classes at no additional charge, no questions asked. Cons: Parking is atrocious. They have only about seven parking spots on premises. Otherwise good luck with street parking around this very industrial "neighborhood." It's very hot and stuffy in the building. Instructor Reviews (of those we've experienced): Miss Cathy- was the best thing that ever happened to them in this age group! Unfortunately she moved away. Mr. Mike- very good with discipline, instruction, and more challenging obstacle courses so I felt he believed in pushing the kids to a greater potential. However, he was a little too hands-on-aggressive when moving the children around. Definitely not happy go lucky/smiley. Miss Alika- completely negligent. Sure, everyone is pretty "friendly" but this instructor gives no clear direction, speaks so softly the children cannot hear her (when she actually DOES speak), completely lacks discipline, doesn't listen to the children when they're trying to talk to her, and is so hands-OFF that I was concerned about the children's safety. During the obstacle course, during the two make up classes I had to do with her, she let the kids fall on their head during the "back flip"- one little girl falling right through the two mats on her head SEVERAL times. Miss Alika either wasn't watching, or looked at the struggling kids trying to figure it out without ever helping to put them in the correct position not only for SAFETY but for learning the correct way. Also, when one of the children was rolling all over the floor during stretching INTO the other children (again with the safety), she didn't say anything. Hands OFF is clearly her style and NOT for us. Miss Ally: absolutely wonderful! Clearly spoken, loud enough, super involved and interactive, encouraging, friendly, listens, disciplines when needed.... Etc. MOST RECOMMENDED. Miss Kyra- very friendly and recommended. Our family loves family fun nights here. My daughter takes classes and is on the HT&T team. She uses family fun nights for as extra practice time or just to be a kid and play. Staff is great. If you want a happy birthday party for you kids- its NOT HERE! There is a grouchy woman with long hair that will speak so harshly to your guests that it makes kids cry! Took my son for a trial class and my son had the worst experience. He's usually up for trying new things and has a great attitude, but the instructor made him never wanting to come back. As I watched from afar, I couldn't hear what was being said, but I could clearly see that the instructor was doing very little "instructing" and was obviously frustrated with the fact that he had to fix my son's form. Having my own experience as a teacher, I believe that it is your job to inspire and create a safe space for learning. When you do the opposite, what's the point? read more

The skills being learned here is supplementing my daughter's dance classes and helping my son to stay in shape during the soccer off-season. My kids love Spencer and his coaching! If you want group lessons and can fit their schedule, it could be a good fit. However, I was frustrated on multiple occasions. I attempted to get private lessons multiple times and it was clear to me that they didn't care if I was successful or not in finding an suitable instructor. I have been using the Hawaii Academy for 15 years now and can say it is a super resource for the development of motor skills for your child. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Check it out I recommend it highly. On a personal note, I would be lost without a trampoline facility here in Honolulu. We had my son's birthday party here and it was a hit! They set up a fun obstacle course for the kids and let them jump on the trampolines. There was an area off to the side where we had a table for food, drinks, and cake. The only downside was how hot it was! Everyone was dripping in sweat by the end of the party. But the kids were all exhausted and my son had a blast so I call it a success! Would definitely consider hosting another birthday party here. read more
