Classy grocer! O'Brien's Market is definitely a high-end local grocery store. They offer a wide variety of "typical" grocery store items as well as some more artisanal products as well. They have a nice bakery, hot food section, deli, salad bar, wine bar, and meat/fish counter. There is a huge gourmet cheese selection - literally any cheese you may want (cow's milk, goat, sheep) from nearly any country, they seem to have it! They often offer samples (if I remember correctly, if you want to try a particular cheese, they will give you a sample of it)! There are soups, sandwiches, salads, and other hot foods like mac n cheese. The quality of the meats is great! Everything is very fresh and well-maintained. The produce is very fresh too! Although many of these products are higher-priced, their other grocery items (i.e. canned/boxed/bottled/frozen foods) are much surprisingly cheaper than other grocery stores. The store is consistently clean and organized. The store hasn't been updated/remodeled but it still has a timeless design that looks very neat. The staff members are very friendly and will quickly help you whenever needed. The store is never busy and you will rarely have to wait in line. Nice little market but I think a little better customer service at the checkout. Returning a milk bottle with a slight milk ring should not be a 5-alarm issue. Rinse the bottle out 2-3 times, if a milk ring is still there, okay. I'm not going to put it through the dishwasher or use a scrubber on the inside. Okay, no big deal. But, don't pick up the bottle like it's contaminated. Don't act like it's dirty and disgusting. Don't act like the bottle is worthless. I didn't project those signals about you! read more

We went to this O'Brien's Deli this evening and took the sandwich bags, filled them out and placed them on the counter (standard practice). We went and did our shopping and came back and a lovely worker, Monique, told another worker who did not have her name on her badge that there were two orders there. That worker was older and had an orange clip in her hair. She was so rude and was talking poorly about us leaving our orders on the counter and how it's bad and that they don't even have a bell. She grabbed the bags and walked away to the sandwich area and Monique apologized for her. The older lady just kept making faces and when she saw a different meat than what was in front of her, she walked over to the slicer and was complaining to the other workers and said she "didn't make enough for this". It was possible I misunderstood her but based on her co-workers reactions I don't think I did. She then walked back over and could tell I was not pleased and tried to make up for it and make small talk about my daughter's doll, but instead made a rude remark about only seeing kids with iPads. Maybe under normal circumstances I would have participated, but I was so turned off by her attitude that I was not willing to engage any further. Monique was lovely and made great conversation. Totally made up for the other lady. I am only giving 4 stars because the other lady should possibly not be customer facing if she hates it so much. read more

This is the best O'Briens Market YET! The salad bar is amazing the staff are nice and helpful. The selection of drinks and meats and also cheese is fantastic. The ambiance is nice it's kinda out dated but adds the nice old style to it. Always sells expired food as a green dot program they call it where they mark down expired items so if you see a green dot on them they are expired and trying to sell them to you for a little less than over priced. They had a had a dead rat on the bread alsie and still sold the bread. The part owner Bill treats everyone like shit. We really like go to the O'Briens Market on Dale Road. Really good food and friendly staff. It is a nice treat to get a freshly made sandwich made the way you want. Today we each ordered a Custom Sandwich. My wife ordered the O'Brien Roast Beef sandwich with rare roast beef. It was made to perfection along with my Turkey sandwich. I had a slight issue with their mobile app and logged a question and I was surprised that they answered my question and resolved my question super quick (within an hour or so). My family always goes to this bakery for cakes and the last time I came to pick up a cake, I saw they had hot food as well and I told myself I'd come back to try it. So yesterday after work I decided to grab something. When I went to the counter, the woman informed me I can get a container with whatever I could fit and I chose that option. The selection this store has is impressive: + Dozen's of different Cheeses from around the world. + Huge Wine selection + Meat counter twice the ize I have seen on any other grocery store + Every Quest Bar flavor along with various other Protein and Nutrition Bars + Imported food section + Large Deli serving Hot and Cold food. +Bakery section with Pies, Pastries, Muffins and Cake both by the slice and whole They even stock my beloved Halo Top Ice Cream which i difficult to get in most Grocery store's. I picked up a number of items from here - 2 Cheese, a drink imported from my homeland, protein bars and a Cake slice for Hubs and I to share which sadly wasn't as good as it looked (very sweet and artificial tasting). There was a day I would have given this store 5 stars. It has gone down hill fast. I've been shopping here for over 20 years. Love their meat and cheeses. Customer service deserves -5 stars. Cashiers are no longer friendly. Can't even stop their personal conversation long enough to ask if you need anything else. They won't let you bring the carts out- or offer to get you one as they bag 6 bags including milk. They simply sit there chatting with one another watching you leave toting all of your bags yourself. You would think since they are the highest priced store around they would have a shred of customer service to go along with it. read more

I love Obriens. They have a great salad bar , deli and bakery. I don't live in Modesto so when i go that way i make it a point to stop by. My reason for the one star was the cashier Sherrie. I was checking out had my salads & some fruit & when it was time to pay she had the nerve to ask me if i was paying with a food card. I said huh, she goes food stamps, i looked at her confused & said no I'm paying debit. She just said oh oh ok. Like really who asks someone that. Sorry i wasn't in my Sunday best, i was wearing leggings and a shirt. I don't think you should be asking people how they are paying, ebt debit nothing, let them tell you. I've been coming here for years, since they opened actually. This store sucks but I still go because they have a couple deli items the fam is addicted to. So with that said, Pros: Some of the deli items are amazing. Cons: 1. Normal items you can find anywhere will be a dollar or more here. Same exact item but douchey higher price. 2. One time they accused my boyfriend of stealing for no reason but I guess his punk-rock style?? 3. They regularly close a couple minutes early and tonight the dude locking up lied to me and said it wasn't 9:57 but actually 10:23. I checked my phone when I got back in the car and it was barely 10:00 by that point. Seriously? You're just gonna lie just like that?? 4. I ordered a meal for a family in need on my Nextdoor neighbor app. The family showed up and there wasn't a meal ready (yet). I emailed the owner. Not only did he get the meal situated, he personally delivered the meal to the family and added a gift card. The family offered me the gift card (so incredibly sweet and honest). My heart is so warm. From the first time I went into O'Brien's Market, it felt like a family store. You saw pictures on the wall of people who I would guess would be O'Brien family members. Staff speak kindly to each other and are professional. What prompted me to this review is when I was there last week, I witnessed the sweetest thing. Two kids rode scooters to the front entrance. One stayed with the scooters while one went inside. The young boy was in front of me in line. He had one jar of some sort of spice. He asked the cashier if it was organic, because his mother sent him to the store for that spice in organic. A man working there, overheard the conversation, came to the boy and said 'let's call your mom and find out exactly what she wants and I'll help you find it.' THAT is a family store. I can't imagine anyone at a big chain grocery doing that. Thank you O'Brien's Market(s) for fostering a sense of family in our community. Starbucks everywhere but no Starbucks to find anywhere This was our situation this weekend at Modesto, We were little early and somehow all the Starbucks we were stopping by were closed or too busy, eventually, we found the one inside the O'Brien's Market and I like the couch they put inside the store and Barista was very sweet and helpful and suggested few drinks to my friend (who is new to coffee) and she even offered to replace one for free if he didn't like it (I guess they had something going on between them) but like the location and atmosphere as despite of they being in the store, they still having a great atmosphere and cosy enough to have you in your zone. One of the best markets in Modesto hands down! O'Brien's had their Taste Sensation this evening. I felt like I was in Costco with all of the free samples. Cheeses, meats and sweets galore. Crab cakes, pumpkin pie and ice cream. They even sampled a small plate of roasted turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes with gravy and sweet potatoes. So delicious! This is for the catering service based in the O'Briens on Dale. We have regularly used O'Brien's to cater company events and they are solid. The food is good, it is delivered on time, hot and served well, the service is good too. Tonight we had filet in a gravy with mashed potatoes, roasted mixed vegetables, salad and pumpkin raviolis. Everything was good, so why 4 stars? The food is delicious, but it is not extraordinary. That being said, I don't know how gourmet any catering could be... Extremely pricey. They constantly sell previously frozen bread at regular prices. The newer checkout staff is rude and act like you're bothering them by coming by their check stand and making them work. If I'm going to pay $6.59 for a loaf of bread, I expect it to at least be soft when I get it home. I'm sure freezing bread isn't the only corners they're cutting. Their meat counter is disgusting! Great grocery store and among their extra services is the sandwich and ready-to-eat food area. There is a hot line with entrees such as tri-tip, ribs, chicken and sides that you can buy in take-away containers. Also a large salad bar and another with packaged meals. I love the sandwich area! You can get what you want, fresh, or choose from some of their suggested combos. What is especially great is that there is no quibbling about "extras" like avocados, or extra lettuce or portions thereof. What you want, you can get. And they have egg salad, one of my most favorite light rye and lots of lettuce sandwiches. Prices are a bit higher than Subway, but O'Brien's offers non-formula sandwiches with larger quantity and high end extras at no additional cost, like avocado, which is an extra charge at Subway. I like Subway and frequent them, but when in Modesto, O'Brien's offers a higher end option which I think is well worth the effort and slightly higher cost. Yum, yum. read more

I made a recent connection with Dietz & Watson, a deli meats and cheeses supplier from the east coast. When I was in Philly, they were so great and their products were used on hoagies regularly. When they told me that their products were available at O'Brien's Market, I went to the closest location. They didn't have any that I could see. They have the usual brands that you'll find in Raley's and other stores. The store was good enough, and a bit expensive, but that's fine. I didn't see any reason to return. read more

Hands down, by far, without fail, O'Briens makes thee best Tuna sandwiches on this side of The Mississippi. Whenever I've strayed too far from home and I'm forced to grab a sammich elsewhere, I immediately regret it after the first bite. I like this store. It's clean, never too busy and you can order a delicious panini. My one advice to anyone shopping here is to check your expiration dates!! I grabbed a big bag of salad not looking at it till I got home. It was already browning and expired that day. Had to toss it. Very disappointed with how long it takes to be acknowledged by someone in the deli/bakery area. Always multiple workers roaming around behind the counter, and it's very obvious they are all trying hard not to make eye contact with you, hoping that someone else with help you. (Has happened almost every time I've come in) Also, as I'm standing here for 5 minutes waiting for someone to take my order, other customers walk up to different areas of the long counter, so it's awkward when trying to point out that you were "1st in line", when an employee finally does step up to help. They no longer have their own register, so I had to take my one little bagel & stand behind 4 shopping carts full of groceries to check out at the only store register that was open.
