Gotta love Nykos Sushi best ever.
William S.

Best sushi I've had in my life. Never a disappointing meal there. Always great service, always great food. My entire family loves this place. It's a little pricey, but the quality makes up for the price.

Sushi Lunch

Always nice for a sushi lunch! I come here a couple times a year and always enjoy myself. The decor is really dilapidated and worn but the staff is always very friendly and service is efficient. Our relatively large order of sushi didn't take long and it was delicious as usual. Also their sushi menu is pretty extensive. I've found a few fish bones in my rolls but that's not very abnormal when youre eating a dish with fish. It's always pretty empty of customers but maybe I just come at odd times. I can only speak to their sushi (I've never seen anyone get anything else) but all-in-all a nice place for a sushi lunch in Johnstown.

My brother has been raving about this place and finally had a chance to take me here. He said this place has the best sushi he has ever eaten. After being here I would agree with him, I had the Green mountain roll - cucumber, tobiko, avocado, broiled yellowtail. This had a nice sweet flavor and was very delicious. He has brought my mother who is Japanese to this place and she loves the food and said that she was that they actually use what she considers real Japanese rice.

a take out receipt

Ordered for take out . I get there . Walk through the front doors not knowing the take out window was open . Hostess was rude and said go out back outside to the window for pick up not even apologizing for not even informing me Over the phone about where to pick up take out . "NAME?!!" As I was at the take out counter . Not even a "hello, how are you ? What is the name of the order you are picking up ?" Gees . This girl straight up was a b##ch . Rude as hell . Ripped the card right out of my hand so i ripped it back out of hers when she gave it back then she slammed the window and told her mute coworker " you give it to her " and walked off . I said to the other coworker that "she doesn't have to be rude " You having a bad day ?? Don't work with the public if you are going to have an attitude. Not sure if she is the name on the receipt but she has fake gray contacts in with a mean mug face . Get new employees . I hope you liked your zero dollar tip .

The minute I walked in the joint, bump bump, I could tell you were a restaurant of distinction and I'm a real big spender, Hey big spender... ( break, pick up chorus ) sashimi and sushi over to ooo... my bar... ( Snap fingers while you do this and act slick. ) And so I did! Nice fish, so fresh, bright and as I watched the rolls being made by Kay Lee my mouth cried for wasabi and pickled ginger. I watched her make awesome rolls, make gorgeous full petal rose buds of pickled ginger and explain some of it to me, as the three others in my party were being seated. I picked up a sheet and pencil from the sushi and sashimi bar and joined the others. Well, I guess you could say I went a little crazy, my Mom always said I had champagne taste with a beer pocket book. I ordered a 4 Four Corner's Roll with shrimp tempura, crab, cucumber, masago, unagi and served with a spicy sauce, a Boston Roll with shrimp, lettuce, avocado and mayo, a Pacific Roll with shrimp, crab, avocado, cream cheese, lettuce, eel and a spicy sauce, a Philadelphia Roll with salmon, cream cheese and avocado, a Shrimp Tempura Roll, a Spider Roll with deep fried soft shell crab and avocado. Yes I did! Not only did I order all of this as a starter for the four of us to pick up, plunge into the sauces and then plop in our mouths, look at each other like of my gosh is this wonderful or what, but I also ordered the lobster salad topped with roe. The lobster salad was delectable and laced with just the right amount of heat. The owner of the restaurant donned his chef's hat as he came out to help make our astronomical sushi plates. One other ordered the Flowering Onion for us to share and it was huge and very tasty. Needless to say we were pretty well feeling stuffed after finishing our crab bisque and New England clam chowder. The soups were good, but not the best. The sushi was incredible. They make their own shrimp egg rolls, these were large, crunchy and had a nice amount of shrimp, the flavor was okay, I have had better. The menu is fairly diversified, our entrees were large portions and all came with plentiful sides. The crispy skinned duck breast was tender and full of flavor with no grease, it was served with a roasted parsnip puree and caramelized fall vegetables, outstanding, all of it! The NY Strip was ordered MR and came out a bit more done than that, but the flavor was there. Too many other wonderful choices on the menu to order a strip steak, in my opinion, I save steaks for a good steak house. The other two entrees were a seafood newburg served over rice which had huge chunks of lobster tail, large sweet and tender scallops and whole shrimps topped with asiago cheese, very good indeed, the seafood was very generous in portions but the sauce could have used a bit more sherry. I had the chicken cordon bleu served with a warm potato salad and roasted vegetables. I loved the way the crunchy outside breast was coated in panko crumbs and the inside was so tender and gooey. I have not had this dish in ages and I was thrilled and very impressed. The breast was sliced so that it could be filled with the ham and cheese and then rolled. I really loved this dish, it was perfection. As we were leaving the owner brought out his beautiful baby girl who was waving to us as he was thanking us for coming in. Very hospitable staff, very warm and welcoming feeling to Nyko's. I am torn between four or five stars, but since I can not wait to go back and try more and it was an awesome dining experience, I am going for the gold, this time around 4.5 stars. For the local folks who knew this as Lombardo's and miss them dearly, check out Nyko's you will be very pleased with this latest addition to the Johnstown restaurant scene. Harrigan's, I love you but you now have competition with this new game in town. The best place in town for sushi and sashimi, no kidding! If you walk out of here hungry, then it is your own fault!

Great place when it opened but I'm not a fan anymore. Sushi rolls are smaller and just not worth the price.

I love the sushi. It's the best in town. Almost everything I've had on the regular menu has been mediocre to straight up awful, though.

The menu is filled with lots of varied choices, including Chinese, Vietnamese, and Thai dishes. And to top it all off, the cost of this delicious food is VERY reasonable. Today, for lunch, I ordered Mongolian Beef, accompanied by hot and sour soup, which was perfectly seasoned and balanced, a spring roll, and rice. I had enough to take home left after consuming enough to be satisfied. I recommend that you make Modern Asia your "go-to" Asian restaurant.

SU ordered Kung Pao Shrimp, her "go-to" and every Asian restaurant, and compares each one to China Garden's version. Her verdict: Modern Asia's was "OK", and she told me I could eat the leftovers for my lunch. I did. My verdict was the same: OK, but nothing to write home to Mother about. (My comparison, BTW, is to a restaurant we enjoyed in Ithaca New York that made Kung Pao with peppers that would flay your face from the inside if you dared to eat one. Modern Asia's didn't even tickle, making it a let down). I ordered Seafood Combination Chinese Yellow Curry, a new dish for me. It was yummy. Described as one-pepper spicy on the menu, it had less heat than the Kung Pao, but the curry sauce had layers of flavor. It featured shrimp, scallops, and calmari plus a wonderful mix of peppers, onions, and other veg. All were nicely (crisply) cooked, even taking into account the Door Dash delivery time. I really enjoyed it. Next time I may ask for a bit more heat, but as it is, I hoovered up every morsel. Try it - you'll like it!

I liked the addition of panko breadcrumbs for crunch, but I wish the imitation crab meat had been shredded more finely for better texture. For my entree, I ordered the Spicy Basil Crispy Duck (added $1 for Thai spicy). They definitely delivered on the spicy level, but the duck itself was not crispy. It came with rice and bell peppers and basil. The sushi tasted fresh, which was good. Service could use some improvement. We had to ask for small bowls for soy sauce, and when we requested a dessert menu to celebrate the birthday, we were told the kitchen had already closed. It would have been nice if our server had given us a heads up before the kitchen closed. The ambiance is cozy. It almost feels like dining in someone's house. They had Halloween decorations up and murals of historic Frederick painted on the walls. They also have a private parking lot, which made it convenient. Overall, food was good, but a little more attentiveness from the staff would've made the experience even better.

I asked our waiter if the portion size of chirashi was good and he said it's a good size and that they have carry out boxes if I don't finish. Tell me why this was the smallest chirashi I have ever seen anywhere. The slices of fish were thinner than the sliced ginger. If you stacked all of the slices, it would make a normal size of one piece of nigiri. The slice of tuna was so thin, you could see through it, much less taste it. I was still starving after and got the fried chicken nuggets which were a good portion, with good crunch. The sauce on the chicken was devoid of flavor except for the SALT. They were even able to take the chicken flavor away from the meat which is kind of an accomplishment in itself. My friend got the Sichuan pork dumplings and the dumplings were drowning in soy sauce so much so that you couldn't taste the Sichuan spice (if there was any). There's a sushi restaurant nearby that gives me food poisoning every time I eat there and I would have much rather have eaten there than Soba. I would definitely recommend this place to my enemies because they'll leave broke and still hungry.
