This is a hopping place and place was fairly busy on Wednesday evening when we stopped by to grab dinner. Our waitress was very friendly. The dinning room has about 5 large tables in case you decided to dine in. The menu has many choices but unfortunately the food we have ordered was not that great. The Pu-Pu tray we got as appetizer didn't have anything on it worth ordering again. We also got egg rolls which tasted greasy like they were made in very old cooking oil. Out of the tree chefs specialties dishes we ordered only the Love Boat had good flavor. The triple delight and grand dragon were way too salty. read more

Haven't been impressed with the food here before but I wanted noodles and thought I'd give them another shot. I ordered cold sesame noodles and what arrived was hilariously bad and weird. They literally took some cold lo mein noodles out of the walk in, slapped a huge spoonful of cold PEANUT BUTTER on top of them, and then filled the rest of the container with shredded lettuce. What on earth?! Good thing I'm not allergic to peanuts! It was so freaking strange. I tried to doctor it up at home and it was still too gross and odd to eat. If they didn't have what they needed to make the dish, I don't know why they wouldn't call and ask me what I'd rather have, or if I would prefer a refund. I also got wonton soup (completely bland soup, wontons were mush except for the bone shard in one of them) and scallion pancakes, which were super greasy but forgiveable, except for how they didn't include appropriate sauce for them. I didn't bother calling since my food was delivered by Grub Hub and what were they going to do, send me more disgusting food? No thanks. Never again. read more

Used to be great place but quality of our last 2 takeouts was nothing to be desired other than for them to go back to what they were doing in the past. Vegetables were almost nonexistent except onions in the lo mein. With canned mushrooms. Hate the rubber texture of them. And a few shrimp were present. Beef and Broccoli was okay but overdone with soggy broccoli. I saw 2 customers eating at a table and saw their food seemed to be of much better quality. The short of it, it sucks. All the food was cold when it was brought to the tabke, even the tea! In Chinese restaurants, I've grown accustomed to tea that will turn your mouth into a huge blister if you drink it too quickly. The food, was all right I guess, but cold. It's kinda hard to tell when there are gooey sauces slathered on everything. Even the hot mustard was way below par, not having the necessary heat and being VERY watery. Hey, guess what? Decent Chinese food but always a good option for hotel delivery when I am in town on business. Order always arrives sooner than its expected, which is good. First of all, save your money & go to Main Moon or Lychee. Got take out & wasted $32.00! Spring roll was soggy & had no taste. The hot & sour soup came in a small container (you get a big container from Main Moon). Not sure why there was no dumpling sauce since I ordered dumplings, might as well throw them in the garbage. The scallops looked like they sliced them up into tiny pieces, can you get any cheaper?! I had to use Grub Hub, that's the only reason I ordered from there but, never again! read more

This place has much better Chinese food than any of the other places in the Johnstown area. All of the others basically serve the 'dumped out of a bucket and into the warmer' type of garbage. Szechuan East actually cooks real food. The proof is in the flavor, texture, and freshness. read more

Value in this particular restaurant is rather hit or miss, depending on which day it is and what the time of day is. You have to carefully monitor what they give you as compared to what you actually ordered. They seem to overcharge whenever they can think that you aren't watching. I always have to ask for a precise receipt that shows exactly what I ordered and how much I was charged for each item. Over time, it is truly sad to say that all of the food tastes relatively the same. When receiving delivery from this restaurant, it is frequently the wrong food and it is difficult to get them to fix it. They do not seem to think that this is any kind of problem. My advice? Ordered for the first time tonight for take out. The girl who answered the phone was very rude. I told her that this was my first time trying the place and wanted suggestions. She was bugged and rushed. Made me feel very uncomfortable and frankly wanted to cancel my order. The men who helped me when I picked up my order were nice though so that helped. We didn't find this to be at all comparable to the downtown location; overall the food was humdrum and unremarkable. The hot and sour soup, however, is tofu- and mushroom-filled bliss in a bowl. It's a better quality of soup than you find at a lot of hole-in-the-wall restaurants, and it's topped with a scattering of green onion slices and a drizzle of hot chili oil that pushes it over the line from "awesome" to "sublime." Stir the oil into the soup and enjoy the pain; it's the good kind of pain. read more

I ordered delivery to my hotel room and it was delivered within the time promised. Delivery person was courteous. The wonton soup was tasty and the triple delight had good size shrimp and a good combination of veggies. Pass on the fried dumplings very greasy and way too much dough. I really wanted to give this place a positive review. I was here for a job interview at Johnstown and thought chinese food would be the safest, tastiest, and cheapest option for dinner. Since this place is the highest rated, me and my wife wanted to give it a shot. We got the general jou's chicken and it was tasty albeight being a bit oily. All went well and we enjoyed dinner. Then everything went down hill from there. We both woke up at 1am with severe nausea and abdominal disturbance, then came the vomiting and diarrhea. Unfortunately for the restaurant I am a doctor and I knew what was going on. We had what is called "fried rice syndrome" or Bacillus Cereus food poisoning. This illness develops due to poor refrigeration of rice and having it lying around for long times at room temperature. The toxin doesn't get destroyed with re-heating so again unfortunately for the restaurant it was clear they had that rice lying around for days without properly discarding it and cooking new batches. Now we are at the airport feeling sick and running to the bathroom every now and then, and will remain doing so till the duration of the condition (up to 24 hours). Long story short, we probably won't be having chinese from this place ever again but I thought it is of utmost importance that anyone deciding to eat from there to know what to expect. This type of food poisoning is a benign one, but still it reflects the place's sanitry values in general. They did it once and they'll do it again for sure. read more

I must echo the concerns of the other one star review because I have also suffered significant gastrointestinal illness after eating here. Last Thursday, traveling on business, the Hampton inn recommended Szechuan East and I picked up kung pao chicken with fried rice. The restaurant was a typical strip mall take out place with a few tables and for being 8pm it was doing a good takeout business. The food was above average for takeout Chinese and I enjoyed it. I began feeling ill the next morning which got progressively worse throughout the day. Then from 4pm on and over the next day I was incapacitated with vomiting then diarrhea. I still don't feel great. I would stay away from Szechuan East. read more

Not crazy about this place at all. As another reviewer stated above I know people who love this place.... unfortunately everyhing I've had is pretty low quality. The chicken has an odd taste to it ,and the rice has virtually no flavor. Not to mention the after lunch stomach pains are never a good thing either. I have been going to this place for close to 25 years, back when it was called The Wok Inn. Even through ownership changes, I have never had a bad meal from this place. I've typically ordered regularly throughout the last 25 years at least 4-5 times a month. They have the best Szechuan Green Beans I've ever had. You can't get these everywhere. This is the go to when I'm just tired and don't feel like cooking. Everything is perfect when ordered. Usually ready for pick up within a half hour. We love the combination platter. You get soup, egg roll, rice and enough main dish to share or it can be two meals for one. NEVER disappointed. Excellent staff. You can eat in also, but it's a small place.
